FLORENCE — Julee Ann Player Pack, 59, widow of John Roland Pack Jr., died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System from injuries received in an automobile accident. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James Lloyd Player and Eleanor Wilson Hodge Player. Mrs. Pack was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Daniel T. Pack of Summerton and John Edward Glover of Florence; three brothers, Robert “Bobby” Player of Sumter, James “Jimmy” Player of Aiken and Henry O. Hodge of Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Ollie Mae Carraway of Sumter; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Crooks officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Attn.: Director of Planned Giving, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718. JOHN I. KIRVEN

PINEWOOD — John Ira Kirven, 94, husband of Rebecca Moore Kirven, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Peter Erwin Kirven and Fannie Purvis Kirven. Mr. Kirven was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church and a retired self-employed lumberman. Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood include a son, John Ira Kirven Jr. of West Nyack, N.Y.; a daughter, Iris Kirven Corbett of Pinewood; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pinewood Baptist Church with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating. Burial will be in Pinewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Touchberry Sunday School Class of Pinewood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter, and at other times at the home, 321 Reynolds Road. GWENDOLYN W. WATKINS

Gwendolyn Way Watkins, wife of John Wesley Watkins Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 15, 1954, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Humzie Way Sr. and Flossie Mack Way. Mrs. Watkins accepted Christ in her youth and joined Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she was involved in the children and youth fellowship. She later became a member of Unionville AME Church in St. Charles, where she was a member of the Opportunity Choir and the Sunday school. Mrs. Watkins attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Sumter High School in 1972. She furthered her education at Central Carolina Technical College, majoring in secretarial education. Mrs. Watkins worked as a secretary at Morris College. She was also employed at Belk department store in Myrtle Beach and retired from Belk of Sumter in 1990. Survivors besides her parents and husband of Sumter include two sons, John Wesley Watkins Jr. of the home and Maurice Julian Watkins of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Humzie Way Jr. of Sumter; three sisters, Helene Wiggins, Elizabeth Thompson, both of Sumter, and Susan Davis of Greenville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Unionville AME Church in St. Charles with the Rev. Joshua DuPree Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by Evangelist Ruth Simmons. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 534 Kilgo St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ISAAC HAYNESWORTH

Isaac Haynesworth, husband of Janet Hayes Haynesworth, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000. Born Oct. 4, 1960, he was a son of Marcus Haynesworth and Rebecca Porcher, and a stepson of Richard Porcher Sr. Mr. Haynesworth graduated from the public schools of Sumter and later attended and graduated from Jobs Corps. He was a self-employed roofer. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Joseph Haynesworth of Sumter; a daughter, Sandra Haynesworth of Sumter; a brother, Richard Porcher Jr. of Sumter; and four sisters, Deloris Lonnon, Angela Davis, Michelle Porcher and Katrina Porcher, all of Sumter. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Lawson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Ministers Barrington Pearson and James Drayton Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave the home of his mother, 14 Copeland St., at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MARIE M. ANDERSON

OLANTA — Marie McElveen Anderson, wife of Robert Lee Anderson, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born Nov. 18, 1923, in Olanta, she was a daughter of the late Harvey McElveen Sr. and Mammie McAllister McElveen. Mrs. Anderson attended the public schools of Sumter County and joined St. Mark AME Church in her youth. Survivors besides her husband of Olanta include two sons, Herbert Anderson and Willie Mayes Anderson, both of Olanta; an adopted son, Freddie Fullard of Baltimore; six daughters, Mary Cliff Kelly, Ruby Graham, Gloria Harrison, Dora Kirby, Betty McKenzie, all of Olanta, and Barbara Wilson of Scranton; a brother, Harvey McElveen Jr. of Olanta; two sisters, Alma McElveen and Zenobia McElveen, both of Olanta; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son, Sylvester “Jackie” Anderson, and four brothers all preceded Mrs. Anderson in death. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark AME Church, S.C. 403, with the Rev. Wayne Gregg, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 12915 Truluck Road. Samuels & Richardson Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

AARON A. MITCHUM

MANNING — Aaron Ashley “Country” Mitchum, husband of Wanda Lee Mitchum, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born June 2, 1958, in Manning, he was a son of Rubin and Carrie Lee Hodge Mitchum. Mr. Mitchum was a welder and a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, Timothy Welch and Richard Welch, both of Manning, and Gary Ashworth of Pontiac; five daughters, Amanda Leigh Conover and Kimberly Dawn Thomas, both of Sumter, Crystal Mitchum of Manning, Katrina Barrett of Oak Island, Texas, and Marsha O’Banion of Manning; a brother, Joseph R. Mitchum of Manning; four sisters, Almeita Hovermale, Carolyn Melton, Barbara Alsbrook and Angela Nexsen, all of Manning; and 11 grandchildren. A sister, Debra Mahoney, preceded Mr. Mitchum in death. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home. Burial will be in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rubin Mitchum, Route 3, Box 993. Elizabeth Rouse Colclough, wife of Marion Colclough, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 14, 1930, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Spann and Easter Moses Rouse.
The family will receive friends at the family home, 2965 Cubbage Road.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

Beverly J. Degnan, 66, widow of Jack F. Degnan, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

MARION GAYLE

Marion Gayle, widower of Rosa Ball Gayle, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 7, 1928, in Wedgefield, he was a son of the late Marion Gayle Sr. and Rosa Lee Cokley Gayle.
The family will receive friends at the home, 534 Dingle St.

FREDDIE M. GRAHAM

LAKE CITY — Freddie M. Graham, 68, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City after an illness.
He was a son of the late Robert “Jarkee” Graham and Bessie Lee Whack Graham.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Connie Ann Epps, 674 Moore St. Extension.

EDWARD JENKINS SR.

Edward Jenkins Sr., husband of Birtha M. Jenkins, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 7, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Richard and Blanch Taylor Jenkins.

INFANT TRAV PERRY

SUMMERTON — Trav Anna Shai’ Mari Perry, infant daughter of Michael Perry and Renee Octavia Lawson, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at her home.
She was born Feb. 12, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
The family will receive friends at the home of her grandparents, Thurmon and Christine Lawson Smalls, 575 Liberty Hill Church Road, in the St. Paul community of Summerton.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

SIDNEY THROWER

COLUMBIA — Sidney Thrower died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of James L. Thrower and Ruth B. Bynmun Thrower.
The family will receive friends at the home, 614 S. Harvin St., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc. in Sumter.

BERNARD E. JOHNSON

MANNING — Bernard Edward “Net” Johnson, 57, died Saturday morning, March 11, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Born Aug. 8, 1942, in Manning, he was a son of Marie Miller Johnson and the late Coleman Johnson Sr. Mr. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools and was a graduate of Manning Training School, Class of 1961. In his early youth, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. Survivors besides his mother of Manning include his wife, Marion Shaw Johnson of Baltimore, Md.; a son, Bernie Johnson of Baltimore; a daughter, Jackie Johnson of Baltimore; a sister-in-law, Sallie B. Johnson of Manning; and four nephews, Larry Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., Kevin Johnson and Derek Johnson, both of Manning, and John Berry Johnson Jr. of Sumter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Berry “J.B.” Johnson, Coleman Johnson Jr. and Willie Lee Johnson; and a sister, Mary Emma. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 203 Reardon St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GERTRUDE J. JONES

Gertrude Jennings Jones, 73, widow of Trenton Eugene “Tex” Jones, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter James Jennings and Cora McCathern Jennings. Survivors include a sister, Florence Jennings Caughman of Sumter and a brother-in-law, Lem Caughman; two nieces, Nicia Snethen and Celia M. Dunlap, both of Sumter; five grand-nieces; two great-grand-nieces; and two great-grand-nephews. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Proctor officiating. Pallbearers will be Marcus Ridgeway, Kirk McLeod III, Clifton Terry, Robert Terry, Robert Mood and Darby McCathern. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Southern Methodist Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GUY E. BARNES

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Guy E. Barnes, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, N.C. Born on Sept. 28, 1910, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of the late Guy Barnes Sr. and Mattie Beard Barnes. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1932, Mr. Barnes entered business in Rocky Mount, eventually becoming the owner and operator of People’s Warehouse until his retirement in 1990. Mr Barnes also owned and operated tobacco warehouses in Georgia and western North Carolina. A founder of the Bright Belt Warehouse Association, he served as its secretary-treasurer for 20 years, and was also the president of the East Carolina Warehouse Association for two terms. In addition, Mr. Barnes held the position of president of the Rocky Mount Tobacco Board of Trade for two years. Actively involved in the community, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 62 years, 20 of these as the club’s treasurer. For 18 years Mr. Barnes served on the Rocky Mount City School Board of Education, presiding as chairman for six years. From 1976-1984, he served as member and vice-chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners. He was a trustee of Edgecombe Community College from 1967-1992, and for many years served on the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mount YMCA. Other notable service includes the Edgecombe County Mental Health Board, Edgecombe-Nash County Emergency Management Board, Braswell Memorial Library Board of Directors and the Methodist Home for Children Board of Directors. An active member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Barnes served as chairman of the Board of Stewards for 10 years and was an honorary lifetime steward of the church. Instrumental in getting Wesleyan College to locate in Rocky Mount, he held a position on its board of trustees from 1968-1986, and until his death was vice-president emeritus of the board. He was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award in 1979 for service to Wesleyan College as well as the President’s Medal of Honor in 1986. He had a deep love for Topsail Island and his friends there, and for many years enjoyed singing in the choir of the Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel at Topsail Beach. One of his greatest pleasures of his retirement was his membership in the Elite Coffee Club. Members of the club are honorary pallbearers. Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice Abernathy Barnes; one son, Francis Marion Barnes, and wife, Kate, of Rocky Mount; a daughter, Alice Barnes Robertson of Rocky Mount; a daughter, Judith Barnes Agnew, and husband Jim, of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Scott Barnes of Columbia; sisters, Betty Clegg of Columbia, S.C., Mary Hays of Greer, S.C., and Gem Altman of Manning, S.C.; five grandchildren, Guy Knight of Rocky Mount, Jeff Knight of Austin, Texas, Alice Lynn Agnew of Atlanta, Ga., Laura Agnew of Durham and Lisa Agnew of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Barnes of Manning and Carl Barnes of Alexandria, Va. Family and friends will remember his keen wit, superior intellect and great generosity. Active pallbearers are members of the 1962-63 Rocky Mount High School state championship football team, and a valued young friend, Meade Harris. Memorial gifts may be made to the Guy E. Barnes Scholarship Fund, Edgecombe Community College, 225 Tarboro St., Rocky Mount, NC 27801; Alice and Guy Barnes Scholarship Fund of North Carolina Wesleyan College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Development Office, 3400 N. Wesleyan Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC 27804-8699; or First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Rocky Mount, N.C. The family will receive visitors at the home, 817 Sycamore St., Rocky Mount, N.C. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, N.C.

JAMES REESE

James Reese of Jacksonville, Fla., died Wednesday morning, March 8, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry and Wilhelmenia Colclough Reese. Mr. Reese attended Sumter County public schools. He was retired from the U.S. Navy. Survivors include three sons, Ronald Reese of Greenville, Carlton Sparks of Rock Hill and Clarence Johnson of Calverton, Md.; a daughter, Angela Reese of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Richard Reese and Jimmy Golden, both of Sumter; four sisters, Henrietta Brown, Martha Reese, Wilhelmenia Reese and Betty Reese, all of Sumter; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Telley L. Gadson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder James Mickens. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Wilhelmenia Reese, 25 Sumter Villa Apartments. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Malachi Henry, 81, husband of Alberta March Henry, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
He was born in Lee County.

ELIAS VAUGHN

Elias Vaughn died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 17, 1954, in Sumter County, he was a son of Willie Mae Benbow Vaughn and the late Henry Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn was a member of Joshua Baptist Church and a 1972 graduate of Hillcrest High School. He was employed with Gold Kist Inc. Survivors include two sons, Donnell Vaughn and Patrick Vaughn, both of Sumter; three brothers, Jerry Benbow and Walter Vaughn, both of Dalzell, and Willie Vaughn of Marietta, Ga.; and three sisters, Mary Loney and Janie English, both of Rembert, and Bertie Mae Nathaniel of Sumter. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Joshua Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eugene Dennis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, 4805 Cannery Road. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CARLOS L. BOSTIC

DALZELL — Carlos Lee Bostic, 65, husband of Myrna Lee Debay Bostic, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in White Sulfer Springs, W. Va., he was a son of the late Ellis Miles Bostic and Bertha Kersey Bostic. Mr. Bostic retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant after 27 years of service. He was also a Vietnam veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Dalzell include a son, Scott Bostic of Wedgefield; and two grandchildren. Graveside services, with full military honors, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Florence National Cemetery, with the Revs. Walt Phillips and Morris Hallford officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
