KARL R. HOVATTER

Karl Randall “Randy” Hovatter, 42, died Saturday, March 4, 2000. Born in Toole, Utah, he was a son of Connie Campbell Hovatter and the late Karl Kenneth Hovatter. Survivors, besides his mother of Sumter, include a sister, Debra Houser of Columbia; maternal grandmother, Elsie Campbell of Pamplico; and two nephews, Donald L. Bowen Jr. of Sumter and Daniel B. Bowen of Massachusetts. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home, 232 Lemmon St. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GUY E. BARNES

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Guy E. Barnes, husband of Alice Abernathy Barnes, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, N.C. Born on Sept. 28, 1910, in Manning, he was a son of the late Guy Barnes Sr. and Mattie Beard Barnes. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1932, Mr. Barnes entered business in Rocky Mount, eventually becoming the owner and operator of People’s Warehouse until his retirement in 1990. Mr Barnes also owned and operated tobacco warehouses in Georgia and North Carolina. A founder of the Bright Belt Warehouse Association, he served as its secretary-treasurer for 20 years. Mr. Barnes was also the president of the East Carolina Warehouse Association for two terms. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Board of Stewards for 10 years and was an honorary lifetime steward of the church. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the Rocky Mount City School Board of Education, Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners and the board of directors of the Rocky Mount YMCA. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Francis Marion Barnes of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Alice Barnes Robertson of Rocky Mount and Judith Barnes Agnew of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Scott Barnes of Columbia, three sisters, Betty Clegg of Columbia, Mary Hays of Greer and Gem Altman of Manning; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Barnes of Manning and Carl Barnes of Alexandria, Va. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Meade Harris and members of the 1962-63 Rocky Mount High School state championship football team. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Elite Coffee Club. The family will receive friends at the home, 817 Sycamore St., Rocky Mount. Bowling Funeral Home of Rocky Mount is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES G. BRANNAN

MANNING — James Gaylord Brannan, 82, widower of Lula Belle Outlaw Brannan, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. Born June 23, 1917 in Brookline, Texas, he was a son of the late Gaylord A. Brannan and Ida Mae Dill Brannan. He was a retired airline pilot. Survivors include a son, James Gaylord Brannan Jr. of Atlanta; four daughters, Linda B. Pasko of Orange Park, Fla., Pamela B. Daughtry of Fayetteville, Ga., Jane B. Hardin of Atlanta and Mary B. Block of Hollywood, Fla.; a brother, L.L. Brannan of Murrells Inlet; two sisters, Nina B. Wilson of Manning and Betty Bozard of Camden; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Manning Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Easter Seal Society. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JACK GOGGINS

PINEWOOD — Jack “Howard” Goggins, 52, husband of Karen Handegard Goggins, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Born Jan. 20, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Eva Gibson Nappier and the late Robert Goggins. He was educated in the public schools of Akron, where he was a 1966 graduate of Buchteal High School. Survivors besides his wife and parents include four sons, Robert Gran, Jason Gran, Steven Gran and Christopher Gran, all of Akron; and two brothers, Morgan Goggins and John Goggins, both of Akron. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton, with the Rev. W.T. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 2, Box 488, Ingram Road, Pinewood. Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

BERNARD COOPER

GABLE — Bernard Cooper, 28, husband of Sharon Renee Bradford Cooper, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at his home.
Born Nov. 30, 1971, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Mary Ruth Cooper and Myers McFadden.
The family will receive friends at the home on McFadden Road in Gable.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

JENNIFER G. FELDER

OLANTA — Jennifer Gathers Felder, 25, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late James Lee Gathers and Felicia J. Gathers. She attended the public schools of Florence and Williamsburg counties. Survivors include her husband, Kevin Felder; a son, James Lee; two sisters, Leisha Gathers of Augusta, Ga., and Helen Gathers of Columbia; and grandparents Earnest and Daisy McFadden of Olanta. Services will be 3 p.m. today at The Believers Holiness Convention Center in Coward, with Linwood Cooper, elder, officiating. Burial will be in the Old McFadden Cemetery in Lake City. Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

BAINARD L. CHRISTMAS

Bainard L. Christmas, 76, husband of Hattie Amerson Christmas, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Robert Henry Christmas and Atha Baker Christmas. Mr. Christmas was a member of the First Church of God on Wise Drive and retired from Georgia Pacific. Survivors beside his wife of Sumter include two daughters, Linda K. Mitchum and Janice C. Bailey, both of Sumter; two sisters, Ruby C. Geddings and Edith C. Rogers, both of Sumter, six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald L. Christmas. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Church of God, with the Revs. Ron Bower and Matthew Roe officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1861 Conway Drive. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God on Wise Drive. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EDNA F. POLING

GARDEN CITY — Edna Fretwell Poling, 98, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at her home. Born Aug. 24, 1901 in Monterville, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late William L. Fretwell and Mary Moore Fretwell. Mrs. Poling was a direct descendent of John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She attended Glenville Normal School in Glenville, W. VA. and Davis Elkins College in Elkins, W. Va. She taught school in Randolph County, W. Va., for 35 years. In 1927, she married Blaine Poling, who preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Poling was the last survivor of a family of seven children and was a member of Surfside Methodist Church in Surfside. Survivors include two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Blaine Poling. Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Charles Inabinet officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JACK GOGGINS

PINEWOOD — Jack “Howard” Goggins, 51, husband of Karen Handegard Goggins, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Born Jan. 20, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Eva Gibson Nappier and the late Robert Goggins.
The family will receive friends at the home, Route 2, Box 448, Ingram Road, Pinewood.
Services will be announced by Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton.

JULIOUS LONEY JR.

Julious Loney Jr. died Friday, March 10, 2000. Born May 18, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Hanna Smalls Loney and Julious Loney Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home, 5130 Borden Road, Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

JAMES REESE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — James “Bubba” Reese died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at his home. He was born June 12, 1927, in Sumter County.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Wilhelmena Reese, 25 Sumter Villa Apartments.
Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

SARA ANN COULETTE CALDWELL

RIMINI — Sarah Ann Coulette Caldwell, 47, wife of Malachi Caldwell, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. Born July 4, 1952, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of John Marion Cantey and Malvenia Taylor Coulette. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Antioch AME Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and the Missionary Society. Survivors include two daughters, Caroline C. Banks and Madeline Caldwell, both of Pinewood; a foster daughter, Lorena Hatcher of Rimini; five brothers, Clifton Coulette of Pinewood, Frank Richardson of Laurens, Jerry Cantey of Passaic, N.J., John M. Cantey Jr. of Sumter and Myron Cantey of Paterson, N.J.; an adopted brother, Dallas Webber of Rimini; seven sisters, Malvenia Greene, Drina C. Jones and Batina Gamble, all of Pinewood, Casandra Lyles and Marian Cantey, both of Spartanburg, Valencia Benson of Passaic, N.J., and Patricia Wilder of Dalzell; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by William Coulette. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Antioch AME Church, with the Revs. Dr. S.R. Moitt, Leonard Simmons, Manuel Fogle, Melissa Green, Janet Scott and Roosevelt Boyd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave Route 1, Box 364 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the same home. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DEMETRICK BAXTER

PINEWOOD — Demetrick “Derek” Baxter, 20, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born March 23, 1979, in Pinewood, he was a son of Herbert Baxter Sr. of Manning and Katie Mae Conyers Baxter of Pinewood. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was employed with Pop and Son Construction in Rimini. Survivors besides his parents include a son, Jaquante Demetrick Baxter of Summerton, two brothers, Herbert Baxter Jr. of Dalzell and Dennis Baxter of Paxville; and a sister, Pamela D. Baxter of Paxville. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Johnus Mathis assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church for viewing one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Route 2, Box 600, U.S. 15, Pinewood. Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Collett Caldwell, wife of Malachi Caldwell, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her home.

Sam Campbell Jr., widower of Mary Campbell, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1911, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Sam Campbell Sr. and Sarah Lebrew Campbell.
The family will receive friends at his home, 7565 Richbow Road, Horatio.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

GENEVA B. GRAHAM

GREELEYVILLE — Geneva Britt Graham, widow of James F. Graham, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.
She was born July 12, 1913, in Lakeview.
The family will receive friends at the home of Glenda Biegner, Route 2, Box 17-A, Coleman Road, Greeleyville.
Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

CARRIE B. HINES

MANNING — Carrie Brunson Hines, widow of Oliver Hines, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at her home, 315 Lantern Lane.
Born June 26, 1937, in Manning, she was a daughter of Julia Fordham Brunson and the late John Brunson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Sallie Brunson Johnson, 18 Drayton St.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JEFFERY L. POWELL

Jeffery Linn Powell died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at his home.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

ERVIN P. BLAU

Ervin P. Blau, 87, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at a local nursing center.
Mr. Blau was born in Hungary.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and he retired from Brinks Guard.
Survivors include a son, Paul Blau of Goose Creek.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Sumter Jewish Cemetery with Rabbi Milton Schlager officiating.

RUTH B. JONES

MANNING — Ruth Bryant Jones, 80, wife of Freddie L. Jones, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born July 21, 1919, she was a daughter of the late George T. and Beula Carraway Bryant. Mrs. Jones was retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter. She was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Eddie M. Bryant of Moyock, N.C., and William Scott Jones of Manning; two sisters, Dorothy Jauncey of San Diego, Calif., and Elizabeth Poole of Manning; and two stepsons, Jimmy Jones of Georgia and Jerry Jones of Georgetown. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Rose Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hall officiating. Burial will be in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tony Geddings, Joey Mendiola, McDowell Geddings, Thomas Bryant, George Bryant and Mel Brown. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Home Branch Baptist Church in Manning. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGE LEWONUK

George Lewonuk, 56, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City. Born in Germany, he was a son of the late John Lewonuk and Jenny Wysalychen Lewonuk. Mr. Lewonuk was a member of Harmony Church and district manager of Young’s Food Stores. He was a Vietnam War U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include his former wife, Pat Lewonuk of Sumter; two daughters, Melissa “Missie” Reardon and her husband, David Reardon, and Mandi Burnette and her husband, Edd Burnette, of Sumter; a brother, Daniel Lewonuk of Stamford, Conn.; and two grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth and Andrew David. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Harmony Church with the Rev. Mark Prince officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny Lewonuk, Sonny Graham, Willie McKenzie, Daly Ward, Leverne Prince and Charlie Long. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Young’s Food Stores. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edd Burnette, 696 Mattison Ave. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
