Marie H. Hollifield, 79, wife of Doyle Hollifield, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late Victor Dewey Hyatt and Mary Jane McCoy Hyatt.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a nephew, Jerry Hyatt of Sumter; and a great-nephew, Justin Hyatt.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1057 Furman Drive.

JOSEPH N. SCOTT

SPRINGFIELD GARDENS, N.Y. — Joseph Nathaniel Scott, husband of Nancy Lee Conyers Scott, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter, S.C. Born Jan. 24, 1949, in Sumter County, S.C., he was a son of the late Mack Nathaniel and Julia Mae Anthony Scott. Mr. Scott graduated in 1967 from Lincoln High School in Sumter. He attended Medgar Evers College and Hunter College in New York. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War while he was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Scott worked as a security supervisor for the city of New York and was self-employed for nine years. He also worked as maintenance supervisor for Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon and Eckhardt in New York, N.Y. Survivors besides his wife of Springfield Gardens include a son, Jamaal Scott of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Rashanne Scott of Springfield Gardens; three brothers, MacArthur, James and Bruce Scott, all of Sumter; three sisters, Carolyn Cornish, Gloria Smalls and Evelyn Rhodes, all of Sumter; and a grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorine and Annette Scott. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., Sumter, with the Rev. Aiken Davis, pastor of Lordstown Baptist Church in Warren, Ohio, officiating. Burial will be in Melina Presbyterian Cemetery in Gable, S.C. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Scott’s mother-in-law, Rosena Conyers, 4060 Gibbs Dairy Road, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

BENJAMIN SINGLETON JR.

PINEWOOD — Benjamin Singleton Jr., 37, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Sept. 24, 1962, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of Benjamin Singleton Sr. and Annie Berry Singleton. Mr. Singleton attended the public schools in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was employed as a landscaper. Survivors besides his parents include two brothers, Boykin and Lester Singleton, both of Brooklyn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Holiness Tabernacle in Summerton with Pastor Queen McKnight officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Pinewood. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 101 Woodside Drive, in the Paxville community of Pinewood. Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Joseph Thomas, husband of Sally Chestnut Thomas, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City. Born March 14, 1956, in Lee County, he was a son of Beulah Wilson Thomas and the late Leo Thomas Sr. Mr. Thomas attended Lee County public schools. He was a member of Browntown Temple for Christ Holiness Church. Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville and his mother of Bishopville include a son, Ibn Yasmin of Bishopville; four brothers, Leo Thomas Jr. and James Thomas, both of Bishopville, and Roosevelt Thomas and Freddie Thomas, both of Newark, N.J.; and five sisters, Shirley Clyburn of Bishopville, Dora Smith and Beulah Thomas, both of Newark, Willie Mae Temberton of Hillside, N.J., and and Nancy Wilson of Linden, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Browntown Temple for Christ Holiness Church with Elder Nathaniel Dixon, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SELENA E. WILSON

LAKE CITY — Selena Epps Wilson of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Lake City, widow of William Wilson, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore after an illness. Born in South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Anna Graham Epps. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Locust of Baltimore; a brother, Joshua Epps of Lake City; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church in the Beulah Woods community with the Rev. Allen Nesmith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in State Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Joshua Epps, Route 4, Box 293, Beulahwoods Road. Green’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DURANT BANNISTER

SUMMERTON — Durant Bannister died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston.
Born Dec. 15, 1956, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Nelson Bannister and Lillie Mae Dow Bannister.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Janet B. Junius and her husband, Hurbert Junius, Route 3, Box 570, Larry King Street Extension.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

Born Dec. 10, 1902, she was the mother of Bertha Simmons.

MANNING — Thelma Ruth Wilson Sheriod, 40, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Born May 18, 1959, in Manning, she was a daughter of Christine Thames Wilson and the late John Henry Wilson. She was reared by her paternal grandparents, Eugene Wilson and Earline Hilton Wilson. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a 1977 graduate of Manning High School. In her youth she joined Mt. Carmel Fire Baptized Holiness Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the choir. She was employed at Pizza Hut in Manning for several years. Survivors besides her mother of Philadelphia, Pa., and her paternal grandparents of Manning include a son, Solomon Sheriod Jr. of the home; a daughter, Felicia Sheriod of the home; two brothers, Lee Earnest Wilson of Manning and Burnie Wilson of Philadelphia; two stepbrothers, Lucious Wilson Jr. and Levon Wilson, both of Philadelphia; two stepsisters, Felicia Wilson and Faye Wilson, both of Philadelphia; and her maternal grandmother, Mary Ella Thames of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church, West Boyce Street, with the Rev. Randolph Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, the Rev. Michael Abraham and the Rev. Rufus Gaymon. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery on Paxville Road. BISHOPVILLE — Shirley Ann Simon died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was a daughter of Phyllis Simon. She attended the public schools in Elizabeth, N.J., and Lee County. Survivors besides her mother of Bishopville include four sisters and five brothers. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett officiating. Burial will in the church cemetery. FRANK B. STALLWORTH

MANNING — Frank Bennett “Ben” Stallworth, 83, husband of Pat Sawyer Fetner Stallworth, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born April 26, 1916, in Alvaton, Ga., he was a son of the late M.F. and Julia Longino Stallworth. Mr. Stallworth was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a naval dive bomber pilot and a gun air instructor. He was retired from Colonial Stores after 32 years as construction and maintenance supervisor, and was vice president and part owner of Central Refrigeration Company in West Columbia. He was a member of St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge No. 54, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Frank David Stallworth of Beaufort; two brothers, Watson Stallworth of Dunwoody, Ga., and Owen Stallworth of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two sisters, Evelyn Collins and Sue Sullivan, both of Fayetteville, Ga.; a stepson, Senior Master Sgt. James T. Fetner III of Germany; two stepdaughters, Holly F. Horton of Columbia and Rita Snyder of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.W. and H.W. Stallworth; and a sister, Hassie Cobb. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Mellette and Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbia with full Masonic rites. Pallbearers will be Dan Campbell, Lynwood Meggs, Marion L. Eadon Jr., Mike Munn, Bill Sankus and Paige Sawyer. MAYESVILLE — Aslee “Noon” Epps Burgess died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Lee County.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dorothy Mae Green Shaw, wife of Winslow Shaw, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Chestnut Hill Hospital.
Born May 17, 1935, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Sanders and Harriett Nelson Green.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, S.C.

GERTRUDE P. GREEN

LAKE CITY — Gertrude Camille Porter Green, 82, wife of J. Abram Green Sr., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000. Born in Sellers, she was a daughter of the late Emory and Maggie Sparks Porter. Mrs. Green was a 1935 honor graduate of Wilson High School in Florence. She as an honor graduate of Allen University and did further studies at South Carolina State, Penn State University and A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. She taught math, English and French in the public schools of Lake City for more than 40 years before retiring. She was a member of Greater St. James AME Church, where she served as class leader, YPD director, missionary, Christian education, steward and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta, Sunbeam OES Chapter No. 224, Harriett Tubman Daughters of Elks No. 1320 and Retired Teachers Association of Florence County. Survivors besides her husband of five years of the home include her children, J. Abram Jimmy Green of the home, Lawrence Billy Green of Littleton, Colo., Victor Green of Chicago, Ill; two stepchildren, Emma Lee Russell of Lake City and Sarah Kairen of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Margurite Porter of Latta and Kathlyn McKenzie of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a number of grandchildren. A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with Greek and Societal Rites at Greater St. James AME Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater St. James AME Church with the Rev. James Glisson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. SOLOMON LESANE

BALTIMORE, Md. — Solomon Lesane, widower of Louise Feimster Lesane, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Bon Secour Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born May 21, 1921, in Sumter County, S.C., he was the eighth child of 23 in the family of Johnson Lesane Sr. and Alice Williams Lesane. Reared in a Christian home, he accepted Christ in his youth at Goodwill Presbyterian Church, where his father was an elder. He attended and graduated from Goodwill Academy in Sumter County. In 1941, he relocated to Washington, D.C., where he was employed as a red cap for Union Railroad Station. He relocated to Baltimore, where he joined Unity Christian Community Church, and served as an active member, a member of the church choir, Christian Endeavor, and wherever needed. In 1942 he was employed by Wollyham Transportation Company as a truck driver for several years, and later he worked for Springmeyer Trucking Company as a professional truck driver until his retirement. He was a member of Teamster’s Union Local No. 557. Mr. Lesane was a member of the White’s Male Chorus in Baltimore and the Lesane/Lesesne Kinfolk Club. He was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church for a number of years, and when his health began to decline, he joined Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church. Survivors include his children, Rosetta Neely, Jerome, Bernard A., Michael Jeffrey, Gay and Lonnie Lesane, Rena and Dexter Marshall, Marvin Scott and Lakeisha Butler, all of Baltimore; seven brothers, Johnson Lesane Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Junious Lesane of Statesville, N.C., Warren Lesane Sr. of Mayesville, S.C., and Adam Lesane Sr., Carl Lesane, Charles Lesane Sr. and Benjamin Lesane Sr., all of Baltimore; six sisters, Maggie L. Farrow of Detroit, Mich., Katie L. Monroe of Manhattan, N.Y., Lillie L. Robinson of Baltimore, Margie L. Benjamin of Cayce, S.C., Mary L. Jones of Livingston, N.J., and Esther L. Hubbard of Miami, Fla.; a mother-at-heart, Lillie Nelson of Sumter; a companion, Anita “Lovey” Conway; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at New Shiloh Baptist Church, 2100 N. Monroe St., Baltimore, with Dr. Harold A. Carter Jr. officiating. Burial was in King Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Aarion L. Franklin, Adam Lesane Jr., Chase S. Lesane, David D. Lesane, Jonathan Lesane Jr. and Edward Stanley Lesane. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Jeffrey Lesane Jr., Bernard A. Lesane Jr., Todd Cooper and Aaron Cooper. March Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.

GABLE — Eleda Burgess “Mamie” Worsham McFaddin, 92, widow of Newell C. McFaddin Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born April 24, 1907, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William Joseph Worsham and Eleda Jane Burgess Worsham. Mrs. McFaddin was a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a sister, Mary Worsham O’Bryan of Gable; three granddaughters, Becky M. Green of Turbeville, Kay M. Gibbons of Manning and Judy M. Brown of Sumter; a grandson, Rocky McFaddin of Gable; eight great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Newell C. McFaddin Jr.; and a daughter, Anna May McFaddin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. DR. MALCOLM MOLEY

QUOGUE, N.Y. — Dr. Malcolm Moley, 75, husband of Janis Walton Moley, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, N.Y. Mr. Moley was a son of the late Raymond Moley and Eva Dall Moley. He was a resident of New York, N.Y., and Quogue, N.Y. He was a general surgeon at St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital in New York, N.Y. Survivors besides his wife of New York include two sons, Jeffery Moley of St. Louis, Mo., and Roger Moley of Belport, N.Y.; a daughter, Janis McCarthy of New York, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sumter Cemetery in Sumter, S.C., with Dr. James Goodroe officiating. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPH R. RIDGILL JR

GREENVILLE — Joseph Russell Ridgill Jr., 58, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Birmingham University Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. Born Sept. 28, 1941, in Florence, he was a son of Joseph Russell Ridgill Sr. and Dorathy Boyd Ridgill. Mr. Ridgill was owner and operator of Ridgill Services in Greenville and a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Reynolds High School, where he played in the school band, and a graduate of Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., where he organized the first service club and became its president. He also attended North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C., and Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He was active in the Boy Scouts all of his life and was awarded the Eagle Award with Two Palms. He performed missionary work for the Baptist Church in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Survivors besides his parents of Charleston include two daughters, Mary Katherine Foster of Atlanta, Ga., and Elizabeth Frances Lentchner of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Richard L. Ridgill of Greenville; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. John Hamrick and the Rev. Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Lamar Memorial Cemetery in Lamar. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Church Street, Charleston, or to Lung/Heart Transplant Center, UAB Medical Hospital, Birmingham, Ala. John Wesley Singleton Jr., husband of Gwendolyn Baldwin-Singleton, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 14, 1947, in Sumter County, he was a son of Grace Wiley Singleton and the late John Wesley Singleton Sr. After graduating from Ebenezer High School, he attended Job Corps, where he received his chef’s degree. He later moved to New York, where he was employed as a chef before becoming a driver for Beachmont Bus Company. After returning home later, he was employed by Builders Transport and Edens Peanut Co. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his mother of Sumter include a son, John Gause Jr. of New Rochelle, N.Y.; five daughters, Rosemary Mark of Conners, Ga., Gracie Singleton of Detroit, Mich., Tracy Rice and Niaya McGhee, both of New Rochelle, and Carla L. Singleton of Claremont; a stepdaughter, Crystal L. Baldwin of Claremont; two brothers, William Wiley Sr. of Wedgefield and George Wiley of Sumter; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Singleton; and a brother, Benjamin Wiley Sr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at High Hill AME Church in Dalzell with the Rev. Charmain Ragins officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Platt, the Rev. John Morant and the Rev. Arthur Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of Ebenezer High School’s Class of 1965 will be pallbearers and flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his mother. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother. CHARLESTON — Annie Kelly Blyther, widow of Andrew Blyther, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital.
Born June 30, 1928, in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Rosa Lee Phillips Blyther.
