GABLE — Eleda Worsham McFaddin, widow of Newell C. McFaddin Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

BARBARA A. OLDEN

Barbara Ann Olden died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1953, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Gertrude Brown Olden and the late Marcus T. Olden.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 250 Praylou Road, Wedgefield.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

GREENVILLE — Joseph Russell Ridgill Jr., 58, son of Joseph Russell Ridgill Sr. and Dorathy Boyd Ridgill, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in a Birmingham, Ala., hospital.
Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

PAUL BLYTHER

Paul Blyther died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at 414 McCray’s Mill Road. Born July 14, 1930, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Newman and Mary Boykin Blyther. Mr. Blyther attended Lee County schools. Survivors include two daughters, Debra Gerald of Marion and Barbara Doby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Corine B. Witherspoon and Geneva Allen, both of Sumter; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Blyther; and two sisters, Janie Blyther and Catherine Deloach Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Corine Witherspoon, 343 McCray’s Mill Road. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

ANNE M. GAMBRELL

MOUNT PLEASANT — Anne McDowell Gambrell, 73, widow of Charles E. Gambrell Jr., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Berkeley County. Born in Conway, she was a daughter of the late Malcolm McDowell and Sarah Todd McDowell. Mrs. Gambrell was a charter member of Cooper River Baptist Church and a graduate of Conway High School. Survivors include two sons, C.E. “Eddie” Gambrell III and Malcolm E. “Gene” Gambrell, both of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Glenda G. Hensarling of Mount Pleasant; three brothers, Paul McDowell of Sumter, David McDowell of Fort Worth, Texas, and Don McDowell of Ladson; two sisters, Lee D. Davis of Myrtle Beach and Vivian D. Kirven of Sumter; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cooper River Baptist Church. J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

HESTENA T. NELSON

MANNING — Hestena Trappier Nelson, 64, wife of Sammie Nelson, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born April 21, 1935, in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of Amelia White Trappier and the late Francis Trappier. Mrs. Nelson attended Rosemary High School in Andrews. In her youth she joined St. Paul AME Church in the Sampit community of Georgetown County. After relocating to Manning, she joined Harmony Presbyterian Church USA, where she served faithfully in many capacities including as president of the usher board, deacon and financial secretary. Survivors besides her husband of the home and her mother of Georgetown include two sons, George Nelson of Manning and Dan Joe of Sumter; two daughters, Betty Stafford of Georgetown and Brenda Gils of Andrews; five brothers, Thomas Trappier of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alexander Trappier, Arthur Trappier, James Trappier and Harold Trappier, all of Georgetown; three sisters, Mary Duncan and Susan Glover, both of Georgetown, and Geneva Stafford of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Harmony Presbyterian Church USA, U.S. 301, Alcolu, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiating, assisted by Elder Freddie Nelson. Burial will be in Harmony Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home, 206 Moorer St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLIE PEARSON

MANNING — Deacon Charlie Pearson, 93, widow of Julia Mae Cain Pearson, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East in Sumter. Born July 26, 1906, in the White Oak community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard Pearson and Beatrice Harvin Pearson. Mr. Pearson attended Clarendon County public schools and F.E. Dubose Adult Education Center in Manning. In his youth he joined White Oak AME Church, where he served as a church school teacher and assistant superintendent of the Sunday school. Later he joined Antioch Baptist Church, where he served as president of the YMCA and YWCA Lodge No. 10. He was a farmer and a chef for more than 40 years at Quacking Bush Club House. Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Charlie E. Pearson of the home and Thomas Pearson of Manning; four daughters, Naomi Milton and Iletha Slater, both of Manning, Joan McKinney of Miami, Fla., and Ella Allen of Riverdale, Mo.; three children he reared as his own, Freddie China, Al China and James China, all of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren he reared as his own, Charles McKinney and Kevin McKinney, both of Miami, Robert McKinney of Korea, James McKinney of Columbia, and Roszetta Braidford and Shantell Blanding, both of Manning; 11 additional grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ulysses; a daughter, Doretha; two brothers; and seven sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Rev. Jerial Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sampson Pearson, Evangelist Sherial Graham and the Rev. Michael Abraham. Burial will be in Old Mount Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 10 Ragin St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ELMORE SCRIVEN

Elmore Scriven, husband of Mary Robinson Scriven, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at his home, 328 Bowman Drive.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Johnson and Fannie Davis Scriven.

Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

Ann Blanding Baker, 73, widow of Raymond Luther Baker, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Blanding and Anna Fishburne Blanding. Mrs. Baker was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a brother, John Ingram Blanding of Hurst, Texas; and a sister, Georgie Blanding Short of Sewanee, Tenn. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Ashby Dick officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church. LOLLIE FLEMING

SCRANTON — Lollie Fleming, 86, widow of Frank Fleming, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Patsy Rush McFadden. Mrs. Fleming was a member of Oak Grove AME Church. Survivors include two sons, Carlie Fleming of Scranton and James Fleming of Olanta; a daughter, Rose Dixon of New Haven, Conn.; a brother, David McFadden of Olanta; three sisters, Olivia McKenzie of Lake City, Letha Godfrey of Turbeville and Chessie Fullard of Washington, D.C.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Old McFadden Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

KENNETH D. GRAHAM

WEDGEFIELD — Kenneth Mae DeVeaux Graham died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 28, 1924, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Fayssoux DeVeaux and Annette Taylor DeVeaux. Mrs. Graham served as a Jehovah’s Witness for many years and was a faithful member of West Sumter Congregation of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was a vibrant member of the community, first as a teacher, and then as a counselor in the Sumter County School District. Survivors include two sisters, Faynetta Porter of Warner Robins, Ga., and Melba Bonaparte of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; and six nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at East Sumter Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 100 Lynam Road. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. Viewing will be held after noon today. The family will receive friends at the Graham residence, 5855 Cane Savannah Road, Wedgefield. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WARREN R. HARRELL

Warren Ray “Steve” Harrell, 66, widower of Annie “Jackie” Welch Harrell, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late Oscar Harrell and Sallie Blanche Harrell. Mr. Harrell was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Woodmen of the World and former owner and operator of Harrell’s Barber Shop. He was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Elizabeth Hudson of Sumter and Karen Elaine Boyd of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; a brother, Grady Everett Harrell of Fair Play; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Edward Harrell Sr.; and a sister, Barbara Harrell Richardson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Ed Hanna, the Rev. Reese Miles and the Rev. L.P. Joyner officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Hudson, Rockwell Thornhill Jr., David Welch, Ronnie Welch Jr., Michael Welch and Steven Hudson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Welch, 3650 Yadkins Court. DENDY K. JOSEY

FLORENCE — Dendy Kyle “D.K.” Josey, 86, husband of Lee Evans Josey, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at a local hospital. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Charles Wilson and Jessie Brown Josey. Mr. Josey was a graduate of Clemson College Class of 1938. He was county agent of Williamsburg County for a number of years. He served as a major in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer and cotton classer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Josey was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and attended Sardis Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Alice Lominack of Spartanburg; a stepson, Wayne Harrington of Georgetown; four stepdaughters, Glenn Dora Long, Jane Smith and Sonya Howard, all of Andrews, and Janice Love of Florence; four sisters, Jessie J. Will of Timmonsville, Naomi Gammon of Sumter, Abby Harrelson of Chapin and Ruth Bell of Bishopville; two grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sardis Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery near Bishopville. Memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church, 3129 Sardis Highway, Timmonsville, SC 29161. Layton-Anderson Funeral Home in Florence is in charge of arrangements.

MCEWEN G. MOBLEY

MANNING — Mcewen Grace Mobley, infant daughter of Albert Mobley and Laverne Nelson Mobley, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. She was born Jan. 3, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Survivors besides her parents of Manning include a brother, Quintell Mobley of the home; a sister, Jasmine Mobley of Turbeville; and her paternal grandparents, Hennis and Mary Henry of Turbeville. She was preceded by her maternal grandparents, Mosby and Ruth Nelson of Manning. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., with the Rev. Vander Davis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Timothy L. Ballard and presiding Elder Willie J. Nelson. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery in the Davis Station community of Summerton. The family will receive friends at the home, 626 Frazier St., Manning. HETTIE M. RHEAMES

MANNING — Hettie McKinney Rheames, 103, widow of Frank Rheames, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1896, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Simon McKinney and Mary Jane Coskey McKinney. Mrs. Rheames was a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as president of the missionary society for over 50 years, Sunday School teacher for the adult class for 52 years, a deaconness, treasurer for the benevolent offering, member of the Job Secretary of YMCA and YWCA, a board member of Sumter E and M Association and founder of the Friendly Union and served as vice-president. She was a charter member of Spring Hill Order of Eastern Star for 50 years. Survivors include a daughter, Ernestine King of Manning; five grandchildren she reared as her own, Elbert “Chip” Rheames, Bobby Richburg, and Willette Selena King, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Charlotte King and Ronald King, both of Manning. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church, in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Jerial Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Emanuel Evens, the Rev. Eddie Lesaine and the Rev. Jerome McCray. Burial will be in the Union Cypress AME Church Cemetery in the Jordan community. The family will receive friends at the home of her son-in-law, Charles and Ernestine King, Route 2, Box 86, Kingstree Highway, Manning. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES M. WELLS

James Mitchel Wells died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 1, 1941, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Houlson and Evelyn Dwyer Wells. Mr. Wells attended Sumter County public schools. He received training with the Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Survivors include four brothers, Leroy, Houlson Jr., and Levi Wells, all of Sumter, and James Wells of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a sister, Elizabeth Robinson of New York, N.Y. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Willie M. Wells, Mary E. McKinney and Abbie D. Scott. A wake service will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Jerusalem FBH Church with the Rev. Michael L. Richburg officiating, assisted by the Rev. W. Witherspoon, the Rev. M.G. Walters and Elder H. Colclough. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave from the home, 217 Pear St. The family will receive friends at the home. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAMMIE WILSON

MAYESVILLE — Hammie Wilson Sr. died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 23, 1947, in Lee County, he was a son of Sadie Carter Wilson and the late James Wilson. Mr. Wilson was educated in the public schools of Lee County and was self-employed as a farmer. He was a member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Smith Wilson; a son, Hammie Wilson Jr. of Mayesville; four daughters, Essie Crenshaw of Mayesville, Patricia Prioleau, Catina Plowden and Carrie Oliver, all of Sumter; three brothers, Willie Wilson of Washington, D.C., and Trivace Wilson and Jacob Wilson, both of Mayesville; and four sisters, Mary Jane Wright Wilson and Bessie Wilson, both of Washington, D.C., Essie Workman of Sumter and Janice Wilson of Mayesville. He was preceded in death by a son, Elijah; and two brothers, Charles Wilson and Joseph Wilson. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Lawson officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Moriah Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, PO Box 336, Mayesville, and also at the home of his mother, PO Box 50, Mayesville. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

CLINTON, Md. — Ora Bell “Jolly” Clark died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Md.
Born Dec. 2, 1926, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Blanche Butler and Wilson Sharper.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Mrs. Hattie S. Rice, 829 S. Main St.

INFANT KALEMIA PEEPLES

Kalemia Peeples died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.
She was the daughter of Anthony Peeples and Quzzy Gregg.
