SUMMERTON — Edward Paul Marteney, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home in Summerton. Born April 17, 1920, in Hall, W.Va., he was a son of the late Drexel and Arba Marteney. He was a retired heavy-equipment mechanic, a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran, and attended Lake Marion Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty Inman Marteney; three daughters, Linda Faye Smith of Northport, Fla., Judith Ann Ware of French Creek, W.Va., and Carol Ann Guth of Buckhannon, W.Va.; two brothers, George Marteney and Boyd Marteney, both of Buckhannon, W.Va.; a sister, Jean Crawford of Buckhannon, W.Va.; two stepsons, Richard Smith of West Virginia and Michael E. Smith of Oklahoma; four stepdaughters, Nancy Ann McCartney of Pennsylvania, Audrey A. Farley of Arkansas, and Betty A. Bross and Donna Stalnaker, both of West Virginia; seven grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Kenneth Tompkins officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. Memorials lay be made to Lake Marion Baptist Church. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOSHUA E. PECK

DALZELL — Joshua Earl “Josh” Peck, 17, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Dover, Del., he was a son of Charles Herbert Peck Jr. and Randi Lynn Short Clatchey. Mr. Peck was a member of Harmony Church and was a senior at Thomas Sumter Academy. He participated in numerous school activities including student council, junior varsity football, baseball and basketball; varsity basketball and was a midget-basketball coach. Survivors beside his parents include paternal grandparents, Charles Herbert Sr. and Sally Peck of Delaware; and several aunts and uncles. Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Church, with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Patrick Reilly, Chris Bradham, David Dinkins, Wesley Neese, Nathan Knopp, T.T. Stack, Jay Childers and Jerard Wigfall. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2565 Redwood Drive, Dalzell. BISHOPVILLE — Elizabeth Kelley Corbett, 66, widow of Cecil C. Corbett Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Alva Aubra and Thelma Davis Kelley. Mrs. Corbett was a 1955 graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg and a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville. Survivors include two sons, Cecil Clifton Corbett III of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Aubra Allen Corbett of Bishopville; two daughters, Karen Corbett Cheatham of Columbia and Kelley Corbett McCormick of Summerville; a brother, Alva A. Kelley Jr. of Bishopville; and six grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the home. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Cancer Center, General Fund for Research, or to Palmetto Richland Foundation Sharing House, 9 Richland Medical Park, Columbia, SC 29203. MAE GRAHAM

WEDGEFIELD — Mae Graham died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 28, 1924, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Faysoux DeVeaux and Annette Taylor.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the home, 5855 Cain Savannah Road, Wedgefield.

MACK WILSON SR.

Mack Wilson Sr., husband of Versie Mae Jones Wilson, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 14, 1923, he was a son of Wesley Wilson and Janie Damon. He attended Lee County public schools and was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. After a brief service in the military, he settled in Sumter, where he worked as a mechanic for various companies, retiring from Williams Furniture Company. Survivors include six sons, Mack Wilson Jr., Clyde Wilson, James Wilson Sr., Harold Wilson, Michael Wilson and Mathew Steve Muldrow; four daughters, Ethel Singleton, Lovenia Littles, Janie Washington and Betty Porcher; a foster son, Matthew Bobby Sanders; a brother, Clyde Wesley Wilson; a sister, Gwendolyn Buckner of Sumter; 25 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby Wilson. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle officiating and Rev. Marion Newton assisting. Burial will be in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers and floral bearers. The funeral procession will leave the home, 327 Grantham St., at 2:25 p.m. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

RUSSELL V. SMITH

BISHOPVILLE — Russell V. Smith, 35, husband of Robin Logan Smith, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C. Born in Camden, he was a son of Bobby Lee Smith and Carolyn Keziah Geddings. Mr. Smith was a member of Memorial Chapel of Ashwood. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Nancy Smith of Lugoff; his mother and stepfather, Pete Geddings of Bishopville; a sister, Debi Player of Alabama; a stepsister, Angie Thomas, and a stepbrother, Terry Robinson, both of Myrtle Beach; maternal grandmother, Eunice Keziah of Bishopville and paternal grandparents Melvin and Helen Smith of Bishopville; five nieces and a nephew. Services will be 3 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ron Glass officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wally Keziah, Tony Atkinson, Heyward Brown, Frankie Jackson, Terry Robinson and Jule Rembert. The family will receive friends at the home of Rusty and Robin Smith. Robert Davis died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 14, 1957, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eugene and Viola Davis. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include two sons, Shawndell Rouse of Stewart, Ga., and Anthony “Buff” Rouse of the home; a daughter, Monique Davis of the home; three brothers, Eugene Davis Jr. of Mayesville; Lee Davis of Sumter and Fred Moses of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Willie Mae Williams of Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren. Services will be noon Monday in the Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C.H. Davis officiating and the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr. assisting. Burial will be in Dicks Cemetery. Family and friends will serve and pallbearers and floral bearers. The funeral procession will leave the home, 711 Brockington St., at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the same address. EUGENE S. DuRANT

Eugene Stancill “Gene” DuRant, 73, widower of Theola Griffin DuRant, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Blanding Rivers and Alma Stancill DuRant. He was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church, a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from the Sumter City Police Department. Survivors include a son, Edward Eugene DuRant and his wife, Jamie H. DuRant of Sumter; a brother, Walter DuRant of Sumter; two grandchildren; and a great- granddaughter. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday in the Pinewood Cemetery with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of his son, 1710 Mellette Road. Memorials may be made to Pinewood Baptist Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING — Hettie McKinney Rheames, 103, widow of Frank Rheames, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Born Dec. 25, 1896, in the Jordan Community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Simon McKinney and Mary Jane Coskey McKinney. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Ernestine and Charles King, Route 2, Box 86, Kingstree Highway/S.C. 261 East. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JAMES E. MONTGOMERY

James Ervin Montgomery died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 26, 1942, in Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Dianne Kelly, 4050 Relief Road, Alcolu.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

MOSES STUKES

SUMMERTON — Moses Stukes, widower of Suzanne Doughty Stukes, died Thursday morning, Jan. 6, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Abie Stukes and Heneritta Oliver Stukes.
The family will receive friends at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Lindburg Stukes and Gracie Clark Stukes, Route 3, Box 1216-E Touchberry and Lawrence Tindal Road Community.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

James “Mitch” Wells of 17 Frasier St. died Friday morning, Jan. 7, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Leroy Wells, 217 Pear St.

ROBERT F. RUSSELL

MANNING — Robert Francis Russell, 72, husband of Elaine Eucker Russell, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 18, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Walter Frank Russell and Gertrude Alida Goodwin Russell. Mr. Russell was a retired supervisor for B.F. Goodrich in Avon Lake, Ohio, and was very active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton, and was an avid golfer with Clarendon Golf and Country Club. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Sandra Russell of Cleveland and Diane Dawsey of Manning; two sons, Robert Louth of Lompoc, Calif., and Jim Louth of Frederick, Md.; and three grandchildren. Services were held at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton with Father Jerry Rysinski officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice of Sumter. Stephens Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ALPHONZO DICKEY

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Alphonzo Dickey died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at his home, 2178 Atlantic Ave., Apt. 2-C, after an illness. Born Aug. 23, 1957, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of the late Leroy Dickey and Lue Bertha Harvin Dickey, and was raised by his maternal grandmother, the late Ethel Harvin. Mr. Dickey attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1975 graduate of Manning High School. He also attended Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter, S.C. In his youth Mr. Dickey attended Sunday school and worship services at Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was employed by G.B. 500 Auto Parts as a salesman. Survivors include three brothers, Leon Dickey and Christopher Dickey, both of Manning, and Timothy Dickey of Greenville, S.C.; a foster brother, Benjia White of Brooklyn; a sister, Irish J. Dickey of Manning; two foster sisters, Earline King and Ethel King, both of Brooklyn; and his paternal grandmother, Oree Dickey Billups of Manning. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Irish J. Dickey, 905 Berry St., Manning. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ELIZABETH V. RICHARDSON

Elizabeth V. Richardson, widow of Henry H. Richardson Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at her home. Born June 6, 1926, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Vaughn Sr. and Pearl Lewis Vaughn. Mrs. Richardson was raised in Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later joined St. Jude Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School. Mrs. Richardson was formerly employed by the City of Sumter Water Department and later employed by the Sumter County Courthouse. She retired from the Sumter County Courthouse in 1986. Mrs. Richardson was also active with Santee Senior Services and Second Presbyterian Church. Survivors include three sons, Henry Richardson Jr., Ber-Nay Richardson and Toni Ca-Nay Richardson, all of Sumter; four daughters, Betty R. Mack and Cynthia R. McDaniel, both of Sumter, Vernell R. Ajao of Washington, D.C., and Rosa R. Thomas of Syracuse, N.Y.; three brothers, Lawrence Vaughn, the Rev. Heman Vaughn and Willie Vaughn, all of Sumter; three sisters, Mabel Murray, Margie Ford and Pearl Mills, all of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A brother, Bobby Vaughn, and three grandchildren, Stacey Elaine Singleton, Fredericka Teresa Thomas and Asia Thomas, all preceded Mrs. Richardson in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating, assisted by the Revs. Herman Vaughn and L.W. Barnes. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sheldon Singleton, John Singleton, Ber-Nay Richardson Jr., Henry L. Richardson, Roosevelt McDaniel, and David McDaniel. Flower bearers will be members of the Mt. Zion Usher Board. The family will receive friends at the home of Betty Mack, 19 Brand St. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SADIE G. TAYLOR

Sadie Gamble Taylor, widow of Capt. Daniel Taylor, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare East. Born May 6, 1900, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Gamble and Rebecca Herriott Gamble. Mrs. Taylor attended the public schools of Lee and Sumter counties. She became a member of Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow. After her marriage, she moved her membership to Grant Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school and with the senior choir and missionary society. Mrs. Taylor also served with the executive board of the Wateree Baptist Women Auxiliary and as president of the Trustee Wives. She was also a member of the Farmers Union, where she served as matron of the Herion of Jerico and represented Grant Hill Baptist Church in the Woman’s Auxiliary Calendar Rally. Survivors include a son, Robert Taylor of Philadelphia; a daughter, Magnolia Sanders of Rembert; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 32 great-great-grandchildren. Three sons, five brothers and one sister all preceded Mrs. Taylor in death. Services will be held at noon Saturday at Grant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. R.E. Bennett, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Dennis and Minister Lula Bennett. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers and flower bearers will be great-grandchildren. The funeral procession will leave the home, 6620 Daniel Taylor Road, at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

EUGENIA B. BENNETT

PHILADELPHIA — Eugenia Burgess Bennett, 92, widow of Mingo Bennett, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at General Hospital. Born in Williamsburg County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Gillion and Emma Burgess. Mrs. Bennett was a member of Pine Hill A.M.E. Church, where she served in many capacities, including Mother of the Church. She was also a member of St. Mary Order of the Eastern Star #156, Elizabeth Tent #57, Royal Degree Circle #1 of the United Order of Tents and the YWCA. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Ellis of Philadelphia; a sister, Lillie B. Davis of Sumter; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A son, William Corley, and a daughter, Berniece Corley, both preceded Mrs. Bennett in death. Services will be held at noon Saturday at Pine Hill A.M.E. Church with the Rev. John Platt officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. Fraternal rites will be performed by the United Order of Tents at 5 p.m. today and by St. Mary Order of the Eastern Star at 7 p.m., respectively, at Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, S.C. The family will receive friends at the home of Lillie B. Davis, 271 E. Red Bay Road, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ROY J. TUFFELMIRE

Roy John Tuffelmire, 77, widower of Nellie E. Ard Tuffelmire, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home. Born in Muskegon, Mich., he was a son of the late John W.F. Tuffelmire and the late Gertrude L. Robinson Tuffelmire. Mr. Tuffelmire attended the public schools of Grand Rapids, Mich., and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served in France and Trinidad. He was a retired supervisor at Boyle Construction Company. Mr. Tuffelmire was a member of Sumter CB Club and past president of the Sumter Chapter of the D.A.V. Survivors include three daughters, Deidre Bochette and her husband Thomas E. Bochette, Karon Cole and her husband Carroll Cole, and Kitty Ahtonen, all of Sumter; four brothers, Ernest F., Eugene F., and Daniel Tuffelmire, all of Michigan, and James Tuffelmire and his wife Sue Tuffelmire of Sumter; two sisters, Lucy Truax and Sally Geffert, both of Michigan; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Tuffelmire was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Tuffelmire, a son, Roy Allan Tuffelmire and a son-in-law, Phil Ahtonen. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Holzbach, the Rev. Tyrone Mitchum and the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas E. Bochette Jr., J.C. Cole III, John R. Cole, Eric A. Ahtonen, Bryan Bochette and Thomas Payton. ALVA R. KENNEDY SR

TURBEVILLE — Alva R. Kennedy Sr., 76, husband of Louise Moore Kennedy, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Thadeus Kennedy and Elizabeth Worsham Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy was a World War II veteran and awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post 149, the D.A.V., a Certified Cotton Grader and a retired farmer. Mr. Kennedy was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife include a son, A. Ray Kennedy Jr. (and his wife Susan) of Florence; a daughter, Linda Kennedy Wingard of Turbeville; five grandsons, Brian, Wade and Jim Kennedy, and Ron and Kevin Wingard; and three sisters, Elizabeth K. Gibbons of Turbeville, Madelyn K. Gamble of Columbia, and Carolyn K. Cuttino of Sumter. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Floyd Funeral Home, 136 E. Main St., Olanta. FLORENCE — Onita Mae DuBose McRoy, 86, widow of George Myers McRoy, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at a local hospital after an illness. Born in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Janie Redden DuBose. Mrs. McRoy was a member of Grace Baptist Church and employed as a sales clerk in a ladies’ shop. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Esther Worrell, Jeanette McRoy and Shirley Williams, all of Florence; a son, George Marion McRoy of Pinewood; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church. Burial will be in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Waters-Powell Funeral Home, 400 S. Dargan St. Waters-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
