COLUMBIA — Julia A. Curtis died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Haynesworth and Rosa Spann Pearson. In her youth, Mrs. Curtis joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she served until her marriage. After her marriage she joined St. Luke A.M.E. Church. Survivors include a son, Richard Curtis; a daughter, Jessie M. Coleman; two brothers, Jasper Pearson and William Scott; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke A.M.E. Church with the Rev. R.R. Hooper, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be stewards. Flower bearers will be members of the Missionary Society. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The funeral procession will leave the home, 820 N. Main St., at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING — Aaron Ashley “Country” Mitchum, husband of Wanda Lee Mitchum, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born June 2, 1958, in Manning, he was a son of Rubin and Carrie Lee Hodge Mitchum. Mr. Mitchum was a welder and a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, Timothy Welch and Richard Welch, both of Manning, and Gary Ashworth of Pontiac; five daughters, Amanda Leigh Conover and Kimberly Dawn Thames, both of Sumter, Crystal Mitchum of Manning, Katrina Barrett of Oak Island, Texas, and Marsha O’Banion of Manning; a brother, Joseph R. Mitchum of Manning; four sisters, Almeita Hovermale, Carolyn Melton, Barbara Alsbrook and Angela Nexsen, all of Manning; and 11 grandchildren. A sister, Debra Mahoney, preceded Mr. Mitchum in death. Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home. Burial was in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews. The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rubin Mitchum, Route 3, Box 993. Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Stephens Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BRONX, N.Y. — James “Jimmy” Phillips Jr., husband of Viola Halley Phillips, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000.
Born in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late James and Ida Jefferson Phillips.

TURBEVILLE — Eula Mae Morris, 80, widow of Leslie Morris, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at a Lake City nursing facility after an illness. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Archie Beard and Bertha Floyd Beard. Mrs. Morris attended Olive Grove Free Will Baptist With Pentecostal Faith and was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Leslie Ray Morris of Scranton. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Olive Grove Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta is in charge of arrangements.

ELLOREE — Richard Magrill Griffith Sr., 77, of 317 Barkley St., widower of Catherine McLean Griffith, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at his home. Born in Fort Motte, he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Griffith and Lottie Etheredge Griffith. Mr. Griffith retired in 1987 as president of the Bank of Elloree after 36 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Griffith graduated from Elloree High School, served in the Coast Guard during World War II, and graduated from Newberry College and the Louisiana State University School of Banking. He was the co-organizer and past president of the Edisto Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and was director of the S.C. Association of Independent Bankers for many years. Survivors include five sons, Richard Griffith Jr. of Covington, Ga.; Harold Griffith of James Island, Ben Griffith and Stephen Griffith, both of Elloree, and Robert Griffith of Clayton, N.C.; two brothers, Franklin Griffith and George Griffith, both of Elloree; a sister, Emily G. Denniston of Elloree; and four grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael C. Comer officiating. Burial will be in Magrill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Fogle Hungerpiller Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 317 Barkley St. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. ALCOLU — Robert Joseph Alderman, 82, widower of Sallie DuBrow Alderman, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at National Healthcare of Sumter. Born May 17, 1917, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Robert Joseph Alderman and Mary Malvenia Elizabeth Geer Alderman. Mr. Alderman was a retired farmer, a member of Clarendon Baptist Church, and attended local schools in Clarendon County and Davidson College. Survivors include a son, Robert J. Alderman Jr. of Columbia; two daughters, Jennie Alderman Eadon of Alcolu and Sallie Alderman Clark of Columbia; a sister, Jennie T. Alderman of Sumter; and five grandchildren. Two sons, Herman Alderman and Dr. William Geer Alderman, and a grandson, Lee Eadon, preceded Mr. Alderman in death. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Manning Cemetery with the Revs. Dr. Robert Lewis Alderman, Norman Rogers and Ron Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the cemetery, and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church or the Bondovlove Baptist Church Building Fund, 536 Mimosa Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

LEWIS W. YANDLE JR.

Lewis W. Yandle Jr., 75, husband of Martha Douglas Yandle, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at his home. Born in Charlotte, N.C., he was a son of the late Lewis W. and Ila McNeil Yandle. Mr. Yandle was a member of Harmony Church. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant with 22 years of service and a World War II, Korean and Vietnam veteran. Mr. Yandle also retired from Safe Federal Credit Union. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three sons, Stephen D. Yandle of Little Mountain, John D. Yandle of Asheville, N.C., and Christopher W. Yandle of Goose Creek; a brother, David O. Yandle of Morgantown, W.Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harmony Church with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 1812 Millwood Road. Memorials may be made to Harmony Church, P.O. HARRY E. KENNEDY

MANNING — Harry Ervin Kennedy, 81, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 15, 1918, in Manning, he was a son of the late Thomas Muldrow Kennedy and Alma Frazier Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy retired from B.C. Moore’s Department Store after 50 years of service, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church. Survivors include a niece, Genie Hodge of Manning; a nephew, Jimmy Kennedy of Huron, S.D.; a great-niece, Mary Beth Owen of Chapin; and two great-nephews, Jamie Hodge of Manning and Patrick Kennedy of Belmont, N.C. Three brothers, James M. Kennedy, William A. Kennedy and Thomas L. Kennedy, all preceded Mr. Kennedy in death. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Adams officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Woodrow Rhame, Kenneth Holladay, Jack Singletary, Marion Hill, Ben DeWitt, and Kenneth McCord. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Winston and Genie Hodge, 448 Manchester Drive. DARRYL B. MARTIN

Darryl Barnard Martin, husband of Juanita Butler Martin, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000. Born July 30, 1964, in Sumter County, he was a son of Willie Mae Herrington Martin and Samuel Sr. and Betty Martin. Mr. Martin graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1985 and joined Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow in his youth. He was employed by Gold Kist of Sumter and a member of the Woodrow Elite Club. Survivors besides his parents, stepmother and wife include a daughter, Kayla Monique Butler Martin of the home; three brothers, Samuel Martin Jr., Jonathan Jenkins and James Butler, all of Sumter; two sisters, Sandra Jenkins of Dalzell and Loranda Jenkins of Atlanta; two stepbrothers, Christopher Young and Maurice Young, both of Rembert; and a grandchild. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive AME Church with the Rev. T.A. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson, assistant pastor. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Woodrow Elite Club and cousins. Flower bearers will be cousins and members of Sisters With Wings. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The funeral procession will leave the home, 5255 Dale St., at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home. Ila Faye Floyd Cook, 58, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 6, 1941, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Lamar Floyd and Mamie Latrell Brannon Floyd. Mrs. Cook was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God. Survivors include two sons, William “Gene” Riles and Calvin Ardis Cook, both of Sumter; four brothers, William Paul Floyd and E.L. Floyd, both of Manning, Cecil Floyd of Moncks Corner, and John Floyd of Sumter; and a sister, Winnie Turbeville of Manning. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery with the Revs. Morris Smith and Donnie Collins officiating. Memorials may be made to Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

WEDGEFIELD - Arthur Eugene Hooks Sr., 59, husband of Dianne Privett Hooks, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Mullins, he was a son of the late Arthur Lee Hooks and Annabell Driggers Hooks. Mr. Hooks was a self-employed truck driver. Survivors besides his wife of Wedgefield include two sons, Arthur Eugene Hooks Jr. of Wedgefield and Robert Ellington Lee of Morley, Mich.; four daughters, Sylvia Darlene Hooks and Wendy Tate, both of Birmingham, Ala., and Sherry Hooks Yow and Anna Marie Hooks, both of Wedgefield; three brothers, Joseph Hooks and James Hooks, both of Louisiana, and Bill Hooks of Columbia; and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Ives, Mike Jones, Keith Lowry, Chris K. Lee, Gene Lee and Frankie Jones Jr. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 5725 Squaw Valley Road. JUANITA L. WHEELER

Juanita Lawrence Wheeler, 98, widow of Franklin LeRoy Wheeler, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the home of her daughter. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Julius M. Lawrence and Etta Watts Lawrence. Mrs. Wheeler was the oldest member of First Baptist Church and a former employee of LeCoq Studios. She was also the first “Miss Sumter.” Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Nenita Thompson and Olin D. Thompson of Spartanburg, and Frances Johnson and Tom Johnson of Sumter; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Bertha L. Jones and Ethel L. Tisdale, and a brother, Vernon Lawrence, all preceded Mrs. Wheeler in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. James Goodroe officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny Thomson, John Johnson, Roy Johnson, Dr. Allen Frankel, Richard Corbin, and David Boyce. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Johnson. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. ETHEL S. BRATTON

CISNE, ILL. — Ethel M. Shiele Bratton died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Fairfield. Born Nov. 28, 1904, in Cisne, she was a daughter of the late Alvin Johnson and Anna Roush. Mrs. Bratton was a housewife and in her early years she taught grade school for two years. She was a member of Cisne United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bratton was first married to the late Arthur W. Schiele and then to the late Chlorice M. Bratton. Survivors include a stepdaughter and her husband, Marilyn and Ray Anglea of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Lola Post of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews; several step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. A brother and a stepdaughter preceded Mrs. Bratton in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hosselton Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray Anglea and Bob Greene officiating. Burial will be in Cisne Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cisne Methodist Church. Hosselton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LOUISE C. TERRY

Louise Cooper Terry, 90, widow of Frank Allen Terry Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at High Point Presbyterian Home in High Point, N.C. A native of Mayesville, S.C., Mrs. Terry lived most of her life in Chatham, Va., with her husband and two children. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Fitzgerald and her husband, Dan, who live in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Terry of High Point. Grandchildren are Anne Curry of Richmond, Va., Edith Tyler and Mark Tyler of San Francisco, Calif., Dan Fitzgerald Jr. of Orange, Calif., Eugenia Fitzgerald of Champaign, Ill., and Douglas Fitzgerald of Santa Barbara, Calif. Great-grandchildren are Caroline and Emily Curry and Nicholas Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Allen Terry Jr., and two sisters, Mary Cooper Clark and Ethel C. “Dicki” Turner. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Chatham Presbyterian Church. Graveside services and burial will follow at The Highland Park Cemetery in Danville, Va. The family requests that memorial donations be made to The Chatham Presbyterian Church in Chatham, Va.

Essie B. Harvin died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Baltimore, Md.
Born March 11, 1931, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James and Essie Burgess.
Mrs. Harvin was a sister of Lucille B. Hastie.
Services will be held Friday in Baltimore.

COLUMBIA — William H. Hoover, 63, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of Lucille Hatchell Hoover and the late William Roy Hoover. Mr. Hoover was the owner of Hoover and Associates Inc. and a member of Woodlands Golf Club. Survivors besides his mother of Columbia include his wife, Eleanor Dean Hoover of Columbia; a son, William M. Hoover of Columbia; and a brother, Larry Hoover of Charleston. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Roland Toney died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. Born May 20, 1933, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Isaac Toney and Gussie Stuckey Toney. Mr. Toney attended the public schools of Lee County. Survivors include five sons, Roland Toney Jr., James Toney and Curtis Toney, all of Bishopville, Ervin Century of Philadelphia and Andre Smalls of New York City, N.Y.; five daughters, Mary Toney of Newark, N.J., Bobbie Toney and Janie Mahoney, both of Bishopville, Betty Toney of Columbia, and Betty Jean Thomas of Summerville; three brothers, Ernest Toney and Jesse Toney, both of Saginaw, Mich., and Isaac Toney Jr. of Bishopville; six sisters, Otelia Hickman and Janie Toney, both of Bishopville; Ada Lovely and Dorothy Toney, both of Columbia, Mary Cook of Philadelphia and Lillie Bell Boykin of Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Holland officiating. Burial will be in Thomastown Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 416 Woodward St. Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
