Born Aug. 23, 1957, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of the late Leroy Dickey and Lubertha Harvin Dickey, and the grandson of the late Ethel Harvin.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Irish Dickey, 905 Berry St., Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, S.C.

CAMDEN — Eligah “Bobo” Gary Sr., 62, of 116 Sandy Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999.

Isaac Haynesworth, husband of Janice Hayes Haynesworth, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Sumter.
Born Oct. 4, 1960, in Sumter, he was a son of Rebecca Lenon Porchea and the late Marcus Haynesworth.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 14 Copeland St.

SADIE G. TAYLOR

Sadie G. Taylor, widow of Daniel Taylor, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.
Born May 6, 1900, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Rebecca Gamble.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Magnolia G. Sanders, 6620 Daniel Taylor Road.

WHEELER THOMPSON

BALTIMORE, Md. — Wheeler Thompson, 75, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Multi-Medical Center in Baltimore after an illness. Born Nov. 20, 1925, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late Joe Thompson and Eliza Stukes Thompson. The family will receive friends beginning Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the home of his sister-in-law, Burnease Thompson, Thompson Drive, Jordan, S.C. GWENDOLYN W. WATKINS

Gwendolyn Way Watkins, wife of John W. Watkins, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000.
She was born March 15, 1954, in Sumter.

LUCINDER P. BAKER

Lucinder P. Baker, 95, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Sept. 1, 1904, she was a daughter of the late William and Lucinda Oliver Singleton. In her youth she joined New Hope AME Church, and she later became a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she had been a devoted member since 1971. She first married to the late Lucius Green and they had one son; then she was married to George Pugh;, and then later to the late Calvin Baker. Survivors include a son, James Green of Tallahassee, Fla.; an adopted son, Sandell White of Baltimore, Md.; a niece caregiver, Vivian Presha of Pinewood; a foster sister, Rebecca Peoples of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, U.S. 15 South, Paxville, with Brother James Simmons officiating, assisted by Brother Keith Prescod. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini. The family will receive friends at home of her niece, Vivian Presha, 9410 S.C. 261 South, Pinewood. Community Funeral Home in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LAVINIA D. ELMORE

BISHOPVILLE — Lavinia Davis Elmore, 88, widow of Ervin A. Elmore, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at a Conway nursing center. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Willie T. Davis and Elizabeth Outlaw Davis. Mrs. Elmore was a member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Bishopville. She was a retired florist. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wilton “Barbara” Watkins of Bishopville; two sons, John Ervin Elmore of Bishopville and Lavanda A. Elmore of Columbia; a brother, Cleveland Davis of Bishopville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lin Kirkman officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 717 Pearl St., Bishopville. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Durham Howell, 79, wife of the Rev. Roy P. Howell, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born in Qulin, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Len Durham and Helen Richardson Howell. Mrs. Howell was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, Roy Howell Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Eleanor Hughes of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Fowler and the Rev. Lloyd Ackerman officiating. Burial will be in Brewington Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 4425 U.S. 15 South. Sylvia Mae Mooneyhan Hunter, 64, wife of Alton Mac Hunter, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at her home. Born in Camden, she was a daughter of Archie Lee Mooneyhan and the late Willie Mae Smith Mooneyhan. Mrs. Hunter was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses Bishopville Congregation. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter and her father of Sumter include a daughter, Ronda Kay Walters of Sumter; two sons, Al Hunter of Sumter and Terry L. Hunter of Lexington; two sisters, Athlyn L. Wilson and Judy L. Flemming of Sumter; and five grandchildren, Crystal Hunter, Stacy Hunter, Trey Hunter, Joseph Walters and Nicki Hunter. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Ellison and the Rev. Victor Jackson officiating. Clarence H. “Big Red” Johnson, 57, husband of L. Cissy Cheshire, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at his home. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Olin Johnson and Mattie Irene Tolson Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a construction contractor for Hawkins and Kolb Construction Co. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Clarence Johnson Jr. of Vermilion, Ohio, and Terry Johnson of Pickens; four daughters, Dee Jones of Vermilion, Hope McIlrath and Jamie Hogan, both of Sumter, and Julia Smith of Scranton; four brothers, Delmar Johnson, Donnie Johnson, Paul Johnson and Tommy Johnson, all of Sumter; three sisters, Barbara Geddings of Pinewood, Miriam Windham of Wildwood, Fla., and Kathy Geist of Sumter; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Errol Johnson. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dave Jones, David Cheshire, Bobby McIlrath, Brett Walston, Ricky Windham and Glenn Harrell. Thomas Wright of 95 Lightwood Knot Road, Dalzell, husband of Emma Martin Wright, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Woodrow Rose and Martha Wright Amos. Mr. Wright attended Sumter County public schools and joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in his youth. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Torrey Wright of Sumter and Thomas Edward Wright of Charleston; four daughters, Gwen Brunson of Chicago, Ill., Thomasina Wright Esprada of Alaska, Janice Rogers of New York, and Tracey Wright Martin-Williams of Waycross, Ga.; a brother, Sammie Amos of Manning; five sisters, Mary Amos, Sarah Balls, Marie Amos and Larna McGee and Shirley Amos, all of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Cooks Cemetery in Woodrow. SCRANTON — Herbert Hanna, 86, widower of Blanche Lynch Hanna, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Jim H. and Mary Jane Matthews Hanna. Mr. Hanna was a retired farmer and a member of Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Men’s Bible Class. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Von (Larue) Baker of Cades, Joyce (Doug) Miles of Birmingham, Ala., and Eva Lou (Bob) Vosbrinck of Sumter; two granddaughters, April (Mark) M. Willis of Mobile, Ala., and Traci Hyman of Hickory, N.C.; two grandsons, D.C. Miles of Birmingham, Ala., and Eddie (Jan) Hyman of Prosperity; a great-grandson, Danton Hyman of Prosperity; and a sister, Lucille Godwin of Johnsonville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lake City Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. JAMES L. HOUSTON

James L. Houston, 65, husband of Betty L. Patton Houston, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Greenville, he was a son of Annie Louise Lyles Houston and the late Alexander Houston. Mr. Houston attended New Testament Light House Church and was a member of Sumter County School District 2 board of trustees. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in Vietnam and Korea. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his mother of Greenville include six sons, Paul Anthony Houston of Columbia, the Rev. William Houston of Easley, Timothy Earle Houston, Christopher Houston, Charles Houston and the Rev. Johnathan Houston, all of Sumter; a daughter, Kimberly S. Houston of Ripon, Wis.; two brothers, Jerry Houston of Greer and David Houston of Union; four sisters, Lucille Bishop, Shelby Pittman and Nancy Good, all of Greenville, and Sherry Monroe of Covington, Ga.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Threatt and the Rev. Calvin Nesbitt officiating. Elmer Ellsworth Hugo, 82, husband of 61 years to Virginia Wilson Hugo, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Braddock, Pa., he was a son of the late John C. and Margaret McDonough Hugo. Mr. Hugo was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Sumter, a member of the church’s bowling league and a member of American Legion Post 267 of Ligonier, Pa. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Teledin Vasco in Latrobe, Pa., as a metallurgist and from U.S. Steel in Braddock, Pa. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Bob Hugo and wife Lisa of Sumter and John Hugo and wife Gaile of Ligonier; three daughters, Marilyn Zieles and husband Bob of Indianapolis, Ind., Pat Brown of Latrobe, and Cindy Carr and husband Ernie of Ligonier; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Rick Hugo; a daughter, Margaret Schell; and a brother, John C. Hugo. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church with Father McKay officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bullock Funeral Home. JOHN H. LENEAU JR.

John Henry Leneau Jr., 73, husband of Creola Andrews Leneau, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 2, 1926, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John Henry Leneau Sr. and Elease Johnson Leneau. In his youth he attended Tindal School in Sumter. He was a hard worker for many years with Hodges Trucking Co. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Leroy Leneau of Sumter; six daughters, Viola Richburg, Mary Ford, Carolyn Leneau, Henrietta Leneau and Evette Leneau, all of Sumter, and Janet Coleman of Columbia; two brothers, Isiah Leneau and Charles Leneau, both of Sumter; two sisters, Dorothy Thomas of Ohio and Betty Jean Leneau of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Ernest Leneau; two daughters, Deloris A. Brown and Yvonne Leneau; three brothers, Simon Leneau, Alex Leneau and Cole Blease Leneau; and two sisters, Nellie L. Milton and Aline L. Hodge. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:35 p.m. from the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Kingmon and Mary L. Ford, 1120 Pulpit St. The family will receive friends at the same home. MANNING — James Wesley Medlin Sr., husband of Eunice Strickland Medlin, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, in Manning. Born Oct. 3, 1917, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Joseph Alexander “Sandy” Medlin and Dora Burrows Medlin. Mr. Medlin was a retired commercial fisherman, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a Baptist and a former member of Overcomer’s Temple in Manning. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, James Wesley Medlin Jr. of Jacksonville, Ark., and Grady Medlin of Sumter; two daughters, Doris Jean Cash of Walhalla and Joyce Bramlett of Summerville; a stepson, Vernon Grover of Georgia; three stepdaughters, Julia Callen of Sumter, Helen Cannon of Rincon, Ga., and Letide Langston of Manning; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Survivors besides her husband of Lexington, her father of Charleston and her mother of Sumter include a daughter, Olivia Lofton of Lexington; and two brothers, Ross Harvey of Charleston and Russell Harvey of Miami, Fla. OLANTA — Hillard Turner Rush Jr., 99, widower of Elvira McMillian Rush, died Saturday morning, Feb. 5, 2000, at Ron McNair Nursing Center in Lake City after an extended illness. Born Nov. 12, 1900, in the Olanta community of Florence County, he was a son of the late Hilliard Turner Rush Sr. and Louise McFadden Rush. Mr. Rush attended Florence County public schools. In his youth he joined Oak Grove AME Church, where he served faithfully as a trustee, steward, member of the senior choir, a member of the Sunday school and father of the church. He was also a member of Oakland Masonic Lodge No. 337. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include three sons, Samuel Rush of Lake City, Carlia Rush of Olanta and Elton Rush of Bronx, N.Y.; three daughters, Rebecca Hammonds of Florence, Theresa Hughes of Chesapeake, Va., and Grace Anderson of Florence; three grandchildren he reared as his own, Jasper Johnson and Artis Wright, both of Florence, and Walter Fleming of Kingstree; 36 additional grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Samuels Funeral Home in Manning. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove AME Church, Burnt Branch Road, Turbeville, with the Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by Presiding Elder T.E.
