Maggie Pearl Nelson, 64, widow of John J. Nelson, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Leo Ashly Stover and the late Laura Mirtyl Stover. Mrs. Nelson was formerly employed by Portola Packaging Company. Survivors include two sons, Mark Anthony Nelson of Sumter and Johnnie Junior Nelson of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Pamela Michelle Taylor of Columbia; five brothers, Orden Stover and David Stover, both of Seattle, Joe Stover, Teddy Stover and Osie Stover, all of Phoenix; and five grandchildren, Jessica Brooks Taylor, Chrystal Gail Nobles, Matthew Lee Nelson, Mark Anthony Nelson Jr. and Michael Andrew Young. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. R.C. Hodges officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at 2925 Bethel Church Road. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JOHN RAGIN SR.

PINEWOOD — John Ragin Sr., husband of Martha Gaymon Ragin, died Jan. 31, 2000. Born March 3, 1939, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Sam Bo and Willeen Clark Ragin. Survivors besides his wife include a son, John Ragin Jr. of Pinewood; seven daughters, Marie W. Nelson, Evone Ragin and Vermell Canty, all of Pinewood, Linda Ragin Stewart of Manning, Willeen Ragin and Lavern Brooks, both of Sumter, and Angelia Ragin, whom he raised as a daughter, of Sumter; two brothers, Willie Lee Green of Sumter and Willie Ragin of New York; four sisters, Martha Hood and Annie Moore of Baltimore, Shirley Ford of Patterson, N.J., and Bertha Wilson of Manning; a grandchild; and a stepgrandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Ragin Green. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter AME Church with the Rev. Orlando McCauley officiating and the Revs. Willie Green Jr., Roosevelt Boyd and Silas Spann assisting. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers, honorary pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from his wife’s home, Route 2, Box 762H, in the Silver Community of Pinewood off Frank Rames Road. The family will receive friends at the home of his wife. Fleming Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

DAFFNEY SANDERS

Daffney Elizabeth Pinckney Sanders, 77, wife of Russell Sanders Sr., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000. Born October 27, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Pinckney and Julia Bolden Pinckney. Mrs. Sanders attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age she joined the Hopewell Baptist Church of Dalzell. After marrying, she joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church and later, the Greater Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, senior missionary, Sunday school and bible study. She was employed by Sumter School District 2, Cole’s Restaurant and Shaw Air Force Base. She was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees and the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors besides her husband include six sons, Arthur Pinckney of Philadelphia, Russell Sanders Jr., of Patterson, N.J., the Rev. Edward L. Sanders, Ronald L. Sanders and Kevin R. Sanders, all of Rembert, and Gregory M. Sanders of Fort Washington, Md.; a daughter, Frances J. Sanders of the home; two brothers, Marion Pinckney of Rembert and Parish Pinckney of Williston; five sisters, Julia Pettijohn of Dalzell, Thelma Colclough of Philadelphia, Arthuree Johnson of Sumter and Sadie Singleton and Maggie Sheppard of Fort Washington, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Carolyn Genell Sanders and Perry Wayne Sanders. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hopewell Baptist Church in Dalzell with the Rev. L.W. Walker and the Rev. Willie Dennis officiating, assisted by the Revs. Durant Jenkins, D.L. Grant, and Joseph Pringle. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. The funeral cortege will leave the home of her son, the Rev. Edward Sanders, 5200 Florest Land at 2 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, 821 N. Main St. The family will receive friends at the Rev. Edward Sanders home. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOHNNIE TINDAL

SUMMERTON — Johnnie Tindal, 69, husband of Thelma Georgia Tindal, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born June 12, 1930, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ellison Tindal and Lee Boyd Tindal. Mr. Tindal was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church, attended Clarendon County public schools and belonged to the Community Hunting Club. He retired from Georgia Pacific Company after 25 years of service. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Cleophes Tindal of Brooklyn, N.Y., John F. Tindal and Anthony Tindal, both of Miami, and Calvin Tindal of Summerton; two daughters, Catherine Goodman of Manning and Elizabeth Dingle of Summerton; six sisters, Della McFadden, Stella Holliday and Rosa L. Grady, all of Castle Hayne, N.C., Gussie Hilton of Baltimore, Margie T. Benbow of Bloomfield, N.J., and Ann E. Leonard of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and two adopted children, Tamika Tindal Goodman and Joseph Holliday. He was preceded in death by a son, five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson officiating and evangelist Betty Johnson and elder Kenneth Shuler assisting. Pallbearers will be the Community Hunting Club. The funeral cortege will leave his residence, Route 3, Box 1218, Lawrence Tindal Road, Summerton, at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at his home. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge if arrangements.

MATTIE L. DAWSON

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Mattie L. Dawson of 4315 Furman Field Road, Rembert, 47, wife of Julius Dawson, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Broom Hill Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Haile’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE GOLDEN

Willie “Bill” Golden died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1943, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Golden and Clara Golden.
The family will receive friends at 12 Gadson St.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

JOHN RAGIN

PINEWOOD — John Ragin, 59, husband of Martha Gaymon Ragin, died Monday evening, Jan. 31, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an extended illness.
Born in Pinewood in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Sam Ragin and Willeen Clark Ragin.
The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, Route 2, Box 762, in the Silver community of Pinewood.
Services will be announced by Fleming Funeral Home in Summerton.

CLEVELAND SWEAT

MANNING — Cleveland “Bro” Sweat, 49, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at his home, Lot 15, Meadow Brook Trailer Park.
Born Nov. 26, 1950, in Manning, he was a son of Jeanette Scott Sweat and the late Ike Sweat.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JOHNNIE TINDAL

SUMMERTON — Johnnie Tindal, husband of Thelma Georgia Tindal, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
He was a son of the late Ellison Tindal and Lee Boyd Tindal.
The family will receive friends at the home, Route 3, Box 1218, Lawrence Tindal Road.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

GROVER TINDALL

Grover Tindall, husband of Edith Suber Tindall, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at his home, 1563 Pinewood Road.

SARAH G. BRAYBOY

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sarah Rebecca Goodman Brayboy, 69, widow of Fred Brayboy Sr., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her home, 24 Corvert St. Apt. 2-R. Born April 6, 1930, in the Santee community of Orangeburg County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Willie J. Goodman and Virginia Summers Goodman and the stepdaughter of Ruth Goodman. Mrs. Brayboy attended Manning Training School in Manning, S.C. In her early youth she joined Trinity AME Church in Manning. After moving to New York, she joined the Church of God Divine Healing Temple Inc. under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. James Allen. Survivors besides her stepmother of Manning include five sons, Fred Brayboy Jr. of Baltimore, Md., and David Montgomery, Jerry Montgomery, Tony Montgomery and Perry Montgomery, all of Brooklyn; three daughters, Sarah L. Council and Freddie Whitaker, both of Baltimore, and Rose Montgomery of Orangeburg, S.C.; a brother, Phillip Goodman of Manning; two sisters, Willa M. Mackey of Roebuck, S.C., and Huline Goodman of Manning; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. Henry Mitchum. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Phillip Goodman, 956 Berry St., Manning. Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

TRUDIE D. JOHNSON

PINEWOOD — Trudie Vermell DuBose Johnson, 81, widow of William M. Johnson, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at her home in Pinewood. Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis John DuBose and Hattie Mae Bradley DuBose Veason. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include a brother, Manley C. DuBose Sr. of Pinewood; and a sister, Harriet E. DuBose Holder of Sumter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Marvin DuBose, Carl C. DuBose and Lewis Calvin DuBose; and three sisters, Sudie Mae DuBose Poole, Essie Viola DuBose Parker and Hattie Mae Veason Elliott. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial will be in the Weeks Cemetery in Pinewood. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Manley and Ruby DuBose in Pinewood. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DARROW D. TONEY

LAKE CITY — Darrow D. Toney, 78, widower of Hazel B. Toney, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of the late Jayward and Ruth Toney. Mr. Toney was an executive member of the Lake City Area Voters League, a former member of Florence County Voter Registration Board, a former member of Citizen Bank Board of Lake City and a former member of Lake City Elk’s Lodge. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a devoted daughter, Claire Austin; three grandchildren, Trey, Darrow and Valarie Austin, all of the home; two sisters, Thelma Pringle of Yonkers, N.Y., and Margaret McMillian of Lake City; two special nieces, Mildred Montgomery and Claudette Dallas, both of Lake City; and other nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. James AME Church on Moore Street with the Rev. James Glisson officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NANCY WEATHERLY

LARGO, Fla. — Nancy Weatherly, 57, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Woodside Villa in Largo. Born in Harrisburg, Pa., she was a daughter of Homer Weatherly and the late Ann St. John Weatherly, formerly of Sumter. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Valley Stream, N.Y., and attended Anona Methodist Church in Largo. She received a master’s degree at Portland State University in Portland, Ore., and worked with hospitals in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area as a social worker and therapist. Survivors besides her father of Madiera Beach, Fla., include a son, John “Sam” Weatherly Odgers of Beaverton, Ore.; a daughter, Shelley Grace Odgers of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a brother, David Weatherly of Largo; and four sisters, Catherine Kubik and Marion Schultz, both of Brentwood, N.Y., Essie Haberstumph of Flushing, N.Y., and Laura Ann Modugno of Valley Stream, N.Y. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Weatherly.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

ASHTON L. WEBSTER

NEW ZION — Ashton Lavane Webster, 74, husband of Virginia Morris Webster, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in a Lake City hospital. Born July 7, 1925, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Frank Marion Webster and Nannie Knight Webster. Mr. Webster attended Olanta schools. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and a retired mechanic and auto parts technician. He was a deacon and former treasurer of Union Crossroads Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of New Zion include two daughters, Marsha W. Baker of New Zion and Lisha W. Floyd of Lake City; a brother, Robert Webster of Sumter; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. L.J. Shuman and the Rev. Arthur McElveen officiating. Burial will be in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Ellinger, Jimmy Long, Chad Floyd, Lynn Floyd, Benton Blakeley and Bryan Floyd. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home in New Zion. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Union Crossroads Baptist Church. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CAIN LeGRANT

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Cain LeGrant died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Brooklyn.
He was born in Lee County, S.C.

BRUCE D. TREXLER JR.

Bruce Denny Trexler Jr., 81, widower of Lou Dailey Trexler, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Bruce Denny Trexler Sr. and Mamie Pickler Trexler. Mr. Trexler was a graduate of Clemson University, where he lettered in football and played in the first Cotton Bowl in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1971 from the S.C. School for Boys in Florence, where he worked as a teacher and youth counselor. Upon his retirement, he resided in Santee. He had resided in Bowie, Md., since 1996. Survivors include a niece, Maureen Dailey Wade; a great-niece, Mary Allison Wade; and a great-nephew, Sean Patrick Wade, all of Bowie, Md. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LAKE CITY — Annie Lee Burroughs, wife of Courtney Burroughs, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late David and Annie Singletary Eaddy. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Chapter of Eastern Star and YMCA Lodge. Survivors, in addition to her husband of the home, include a daughter, Vanessa Singletary of the home; four sons, Alfred (Donna) Burroughs and Courtney (Gracie) Burroughs Jr., both of Lake City, Charles (Debbie) Burroughs of Raleigh, N.C., and Glenn Burroughs of Newark, N.J.; a sister, Mable Davis of Lake City; a brother, James Eaddy of Hemingway; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; two aunts; nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at New Bethlehem Baptist Church on McClam Road, with the Rev. Ceasar McGill officiating. Burial will be in the Rest Lawn Cemetery. ROOSEVELT ‘BILLY’ DIXON JR.

BISHOPVILLE — Roosevelt “Billy” Dixon Jr., husband of Sandra Dixon, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Kershaw Medical Center. Born March 11, 1960, in Bishopville, he was a son of Roosevelt Dixon Sr. and Wilhemenie Dixon. He was employed by New South Inc. of Camden and was a member of Saint Mark Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his son, Vellion Dixon of the home; three daughters, Equieta Dixon of Bishopville, Roshonda Dixon and Chennetta Dixon, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Leroy Dixon and Carl Brown, both of Bishopville; and one sister, Willie Mae Dixon of Bishopville. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Saint Mark Baptist Church, with the Rev. T.O. Everett officiating and assisted by the Revs. Jacob and Dixon. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave the home at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home. Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JANIE WINN HOLLIDAY

Janie Winn Holliday, widow of Charlie Holliday Sr., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 18, 1925, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie James Wynn and Isabella Moore Winn, and she was a faithful member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for more than 50 years. Locally, she was active in the former Saint Mark Seventh Day Adventist Church and later in the Berea Church congregation. She served as a member of the Deaconess Board and worked with the Community Services Department of the church. In the 1950s, she moved to New York, where she was employed with the New York City Transit System. In the 1970s, after her retirement, she returned to Sumter. Survivors are three daughters, Jeanette Brown of Sumter, Eartha Hopkins of Williamsburg, Pa., and Shirley Warren of Limo, Ohio; two brothers, Charles Haynesworth of Sumter and Sammie Winn of Baltimore, Md.; and two sisters, Dorothy Waiters and Georgia Mae Josey, both of Sumter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Charlie Holliday Jr. and Robert Lee Holliday; two sisters, Mary Robinson and Ella Mae Winn; and a brother, James Winn. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church, with the Rev. Emmanuel Jackson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Cain Cemetery in Wedgefield. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of Jeanette Brown, 24 Walker Ave., Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
