Stephen Roman, 55, husband of Linda Lovejoy Roman, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 at his home. Born in Pennsylvania, Mr. Roman was a son of Bill Bradham and the late Eva Roman Sterbacky. Mr. Roman worked for Harvin Packing Co. Survivors, in addition to his wife and father of Sumter, include two sons, Jack Barkley III and Billy Roman, both of Sumter; his daughter, Helen Dowling of New Mexico; his brother, Bobby Sterbacky of Philadelphia; two sisters, Janet Leahy and Diane Paytas, both of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Sunday in Sumter Cemetery. Pastor Tommy Price will officiate. Pallbearers will be Marcus Outlaw, Larry Lovejoy, Jeff Potter, Shane McCoy, Joey Floyd and Michael McCoy. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. At other times, friends may visit the family at 21 Shuler Drive. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA MCGUIRT KIRBY

BISHOPVILLE — Patricia “Pat” McGuirt Kirby, 58, wife of William Robert Kirby, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 2, 1941, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late John Rodman and Lillian Morrow McGuirt. Mrs. Kirby was a housewife. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Butner, N.C., include two daughters, Donna Kirby Lilley of Creedmoore, N.C., and Glenda “GiGi” Phillips of Bishopville; three sisters, Faye Brown, Brenda Floyd and Jo McGuirt, all of Bishopville; a brother, Rayford McGuirt of Bishopville; and five grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Chapel Church. The Rev. Ron Glass will officiate. Friends may visit the family at 237 Springhill Road, Bishopville, from 2 to 4 p.m. today. BESSIE HILTON

SUMMERTON — Bessie Hilton died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000. Born Jan. 12, 1947, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late William Hilton and Suester Georgia Hilton. Survivors include a son, Andre Reyes; six brothers, John Hilton of Los Angeles, Leroy Hilton and Charles Hilton, both of Summerton, Morgan Hilton of Chicago, Joseph Hilton of Columbia, Edward P. Hilton of New York; four sisters, Gussie Cochrane and Hattie Blackwell, both of Summerton, Henryetta Franklin of Chicago and Susan Aasiya Bey of Maryland. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. The Rev. Malachi L. Duncan will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Henry W. Mitchell, pastor Naomi Georgia and minister Ruthie Moore. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave from the home of her brother, Charles Hilton, of Rimini Road in Summerton at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hospice program at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, 31 E. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150. Fleming Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID WILLIAMS

David Williams died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 10, 1929, in Camden, he was a son of the late Eugene Williams and Fannie Days Williams. Mr. Williams was a resident of McElveen Residential Facility for 12 years. Survivors include his adopted daughter, Rosa L. McElveen of Sumter; four adopted brothers; two adopted sisters; two adopted grandchildren; and four adopted great-grandchildren. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. D.L. Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friends may visit the family at 1205 Oswego Road, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

BESSIE HILTON

SUMMERTON — Bessie Hilton, 53, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2000, at the home of her sister, Hattie Mae Blackwell, after an extended illness.
Born in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William Hilton and Suester Georgia Hilton.
The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Charles Hilton, off Rimini Road, P.O. Box 1065, Summerton.
Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Services will be announced by Fleming Funeral Home in Summerton.

MAGGIE H. WILLIAMS

COLUMBIA — Maggie Hickman Williams, widow of Zack Williams, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Bryan Center.
Born June 9, 1911, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Gilford and Dora Boone Hickman.
The family will receive friends at the family home, Box 130, Pear Street, Woodrow.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter.

EDWARD A. ANDERSON JR

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Edward Alphonza “Bo” Anderson Jr. of 5100 Harrison St., 70, husband of Ida Louise Anderson, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Hollywood Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 5, 1929, in Summerton in Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late Edward A. Anderson and Aliane Richburg and the stepson of Minnie House Anderson. Mr. Anderson attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a veteran, having served in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He received an honorable discharge. He continued his studies at the Veterans Administration night school. He was a trailblazer for his time and an entrepreneur, starting his own lawn business which he successfully operated for over 35 years. Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Kenneth Anderson, the Rev. Michael Anderson and Fredrick M. Anderson; two daughters, Anita M. Johnson and Lorie A. Anderson, both of Miami, Fla.; three brothers, Harold Anderson, George Anderson and Charles Anderson, all of Hollywood; three sisters, Edith Ellis of Philadelphia, Pa., and Julia Fernandez and Yvonne Brown, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; four stepsons, Reginald Ogburn, Bobby Stripling, Maurice Cobb, and Shawn Ingrid, all of Miami; three stepdaughters, Ida, Belinda and Gwen Stripling, all of Hollywood, Fla; three children he reared in his home, James Penny, Chris Penny and Gloria Taylor; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Anderson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Friendship AME Church, in the Silver community of Summerton, S.C., with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard officiating, assisted by the Rev. Donna Hall and the Rev. Michael Anderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Members of the Community Hunting Club will be pallbearers. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his cousin, Susie Henry, and her husband, Joe N. Henry, Route 3, Box 1250, Summerton. PIEDMONT — Mary Jean Barnett Baldwin, 44, wife of Allen Wayne Baldwin, of 327 Highway 20, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at her home. Survivors include her father, Arthur Barnett of Greenville, formerly of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tremont Avenue Church of God. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Travelers Rest. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Westville Memorial Funeral Home in Greenville, and at other times at the home. ARTHUR W. BUSSEY

Arthur W. Bussey, 72, husband of Barbara “Bobbie” Pritchard Bussey, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Blountsville, Ala., he was a son of the late Arthur Bussey and Pearl Weaver Bussey. Mr. Bussey was a Baptist. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 20 years of service, having served in Korea and Vietnam. He was also retired from the City of Sumter. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a granddaughter, Jacquelyn Bussey of Darlington. He was preceded in death by a son, Randall A. Bussey. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Green Acres Assembly of God Church or to the American Diabetes Association, S.C. LAKE CITY — Olema Cooper Carter, 63, widow of Joe Carter, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000. Born in Lake City, she was a daughter of the late George “Shine” Cooper and Lillie Barron Cooper. She was a member of John Tabernacle Holiness Church. Survivors include a son, Jonathan Ray Carter of Florida; three brothers, Bobby Singletary and William Cooper, both of Lake City, and Charles Cooper of Florence; seven sisters, Jannie Mae Burgess, Doris Donna Lee Singletary, Julia Jones, Wanda Cooper and Betty Cooper, all of Lake City, and Odell Myers and Betty Brown, both of Florence; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at John Tabernacle Holiness Church on Goodwin Street with Elder Talbert Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. DAVID COMMANDER III

LYNCHBURG — David Commander III, husband of Carolyn Nedd Commander, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center. Born May 2, 1964, in Lee County, he was a son of David Commander Jr. and May Frances Davis Commander. Mr. Commander was a member of Unionville AME Church in St. Charles. He was a 1982 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in Elliott. While at Mt. Pleasant High School, he played on the football and basketball teams and was an honor student. After graduation, he was employed at Whitaker Cabinet Manufacturing in Mayesville, Korn Industries Inc. in Sumter and CCI Correctional Institution in Columbia. Later he was employed at the Lee County Correctional Center, and most recently was promoted to contraband sergeant at Kershaw Correctional Institution. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg and his parents of Lynchburg include a son, David Commander IV of Lynchburg; three daughters, LaQuesta Sims Commander, LaShonda Commander and Shantell Commander, all of Lynchburg; seven brothers, Larry Commander of Charlotte, N.C., Leveron, Leroy and Eugene Commander, all of Columbia, Herman Commander of Wisacky, and Thomas Commander and Harry Lee Anderson, both of Mayesville; and three sisters, Frances Commander of Columbia, and Linda and Valarie Commander, both of Lynchburg. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Commander; and his paternal grandparents, David Commander Sr. and Nellie Clavon Commander. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Unionville AME Church in St. Charles with the Rev. J. Dupree Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. VERNADA D. GIBSON

MANNING — Vernada Dozier Gibson, 39, wife of Bartholomew Gibson Sr., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Feb. 17, 1960, in Miami, Fla, she was a daughter of the Rev. Jerome Dozier and Julia Epps Dozier. Mrs. Gibson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth she was baptized at Williams Chapel Christian Church. She later joined Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, where she served as the children’s program director and choir director. Survivors besides her husband of the home and his parents of Manning include three sons, Andrew Gibson, Bartholomew Gibson Jr. and Kenneth Gibson, all of the home; three daughters, Charlotte Gibson, Shannon Gibson and Jacena Gibson, all of the home; two brothers, Ignacio Dozier of Manning and Demetrius Dozier of Melbourne, Fla.; and six sisters, Ladina Dozier and Wendy Sholfield, both of Florence, Louise “Marie” McBride and Aegina Pickney, both of Manning, Netta McRae of Melbourne, Fla., and Juliane Dozier of Waterbury, Conn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Williams Chapel Christian Church, off U.S. 521, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. H. Charles, the Rev. LAKE CITY — Otto Graham, 64, widower of Earline Simon Graham, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000. Born in Florence County, he was a son of Ella Black Graham and the late Matthew Graham. Mr. Graham was a member of St. John Methodist Church. Survivors besides his mother of Lake City include a son, Billy Graham of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Gussie Graham of Lake City and Gloria Graham of Myrtle Beach; five brothers, Joshua Graham, Clarence Graham, Master Graham, Larry Graham and Benny Graham, all of Lake City; a sister, Katie Montgomery of Lake City; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Geddis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MARY HAMILTON

Mary Hamilton, 81, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center. Born Dec. 11, 1918, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Julia Rembert. Survivors include three nephews, Horace Green, Frank Green and Jesse McCoy, all of Sumter; and seven nieces, Gussie Mae Johnson, Minnie Brooks and Maggie Rose, all of Sumter, Julia Mae Glover of Dalzell, and Vermell Cabbagestalk, Betty Anderson and Julia Mae Diggs, all of Pittsburgh, Pa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Scriven Funeral Home with Elder E.P. Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Gussie Mae Johnson, 627 S. Sumter St. Scriven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene C. Lawhon, 79, wife of Dewey Lawhon, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late C.R. Conner Sr. and Daphne Singletary Conner. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sons, Edward Lawhon and William Lawhon, both of Sumter; a daughter, Betty Jean Ardis of Sumter; two brothers, Jack Conner of Sumter and Maxie Conner of Florence; three half brothers, Levern Conner of Effingham, Kenneth Conner of Timmonsville and Gerald Conner of Florence; a half sister, Lorise Graham of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Sammy Roy Lawhon; two half brothers, Alvin Conner and C.R. “Bud” Conner Jr.; three sisters, Louise Conyers, Rose Marie Whitlock and Cecelia Lynch; and two half sisters, Elouise Bass and Margie Smith. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Green Acres Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Ethel Robinson Lyles of Second Street, Pinewood, widow of Bennie McArthur Lyles, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Ben Robinson and the late Ella Green Robinson. Mrs. Lyles attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Antioch RMUE Church. Survivors besides her father of the home include two sons, Ronnie Lyles of Pinewood and Maurice Lyles of Sumter; four daughters, Diane Williams and Georgia Hardy, both of Pinewood, and Benita Webb and Kimberly McConico, both of Sumter; three brothers, Quincy and Charlie Robinson, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Isaac Robinson of Bronx, N.Y.; three sisters, Dorothy Lyles, Daisy Barnett and Rebecca Carson, all of Philadelphia; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with the Rev. William Polite Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Powell Hampton Jr., the Rev. Danny Williams, the Rev. Leroy Williams, the Rev. James Clark, and the Rev. Amos Hatcher. Burial will in Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini. The family will receive friends at the home. George “Coon” Martin died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000. Born Sept. 3, 1935, he was a son of the late Jimmie Ranson Martin and Evelena Shaw Martin. Mr. Martin was employed by Hoyts Heating and Air Conditioning Co. for 27 years. Survivors include a son, Henry Lee Shaw of Dalzell; a daughter, Annie Bell Oaks of the home; three brothers, Frierson Martin and Harry Martin, both of Dalzell, and Herbert Martin of Bishopville; three sisters, Delores Smith of Rembert, and Emma M. Wright and Mary M. Price, both of Dalzell; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Henry, James and John Martin; and a sister, Tamer M. Montgomery. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Julia V. Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Cookfield Cemetery. LYNCHBURG — Lloyd Bethea “Mickey” Mixon Jr., 52, husband of Linda Keels Mixon, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Lloyd Mixon Sr. and Elsie Gamble Mixon. Mr. Mixon was a farmer. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg include a son, Michael Wyatt Mixon of Lynchburg; a daughter, Sara Mixon Green of Lynchburg; a brother, Steve Gamble of Sardinia; and a granddaughter, Mallorey Scott Green. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta is in charge of arrangements.

REMBERT — Ruby Spencer of 75 Tressie Lane, widow of Booker T. Spencer, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Columbia. Born April 24, 1927, in Stewart, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Rosa Hall. She attended the public schools in Stewart. Mother Spencer was a loyal member of St. Paul Holiness Church in Sumter. Survivors include a son, Clarence Hill of Newark, N.J.; an adopted son, Fred Baxter; eight stepchildren, Shirley Strakes, Dorothy A. Power, Robert Spencer, Thomas Spencer, Mayler King, Rosa Lee Choices, Annie Mae Whiter and Deloris Cleburne; a special niece and caregiver, Edna Mae Jasper; and a grandson, Clarence Armstrong. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abundant Life Prayer, Praise and Worship Center, 1 Commerce Alley, Camden, with the Pastor A.D. Givens Little, eulogist, and Pastor Holiday, presiding. Burial will be in Good Hope UMC Cemetery. Viewing will be from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Cooke Memorial Chapel in Camden. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Thomas Maule, 90, husband of Edna Mae “Etsie Mae” Maule, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at St. Marys Medical Center. Born July 19, 1909, in Somerset, Ky., he was a son of the late Isaac Torp Maule and Rossetta Trimble Maule. Mr. Maule attended Calvary Baptist Tabernacle. Survivors besides his wife of Knoxville include a daughter, Juanita Haywood, and her husband, Sam Haywood, of Sumter, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Ann Williams and her husband, Jack Williams, of Karns; a granddaughter, Samantha Haywood Larkin; three great-grandchildren; Halli Haywood Larkin, Jack Thomas Larkin and Caroline Grace Larkin; a sister, Daisy White of Richmond, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vanny Giles; and a stepson, Edward Scarbrough. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. today at Stevens Mortuary Chapel with Pastor J. Allen Johnson officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the main entrance to Greenwood Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers will be Paul Patterson, Jesse Knight, Bobby Cooper, Don Wooten, James R. Bassinger III and Dennis Stanley.
