Phillip Michael Mobley, seven weeks old, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Charles Kent Mobley and April Ann Booth Mobley. Survivors besides his parents of Sumter include a sister, Katelyn Marie Mobley of the home; his paternal grandparents, David Kent Mobley Sr. and Julia Mixon Mobley of Sumter; his maternal grandparents, James C. Booth and Bobbie Sue Booth of Sumter; his paternal great-grandmother, Thelma T. Mobley of Sumter; his maternal great-grandparents, James M. Booth and Betty Booth of Sumter; two uncles, John Mark Mobley of Chicago, Ill., and David Kent Mobley Jr. of Sumter; and four aunts, Debbie Foisey, Diane Padgett, Doris Scarborough and Tracy Booth. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. James C. Adams officiating. The family will receive friends at 18 Chestnut St. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAZELENE S. SELLERS

Hazelene Stephens Sellers, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at her home. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Vincent Stephens and Mary Marie Webb Stephens. Mrs. Sellers attended St. John United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed by Home Health Care. Survivors include two sons, Johnny McElveen and Ray McElveen, both of Sumter; a daughter, Patricia Byrd of Sumter; a sister, Irene Hutchinson of Cheraw; three half brothers, Buck Stephens, Cary Stephens and Vincent Stephens, all of Sumter; two half sisters, Judy Stephens and Earlene Stephens, both of Sumter; her stepmother, Bernice Stephens of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul McElveen. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Byrd, 103 Loring Place. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ALICE F. WADE

SUMMERTON — Alice Lee Fielding Wade, 72, wife of Herbert C. Wade, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Jan. 8, 1928, in Bealeton, Va., she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Maude Elizabeth Lee Fielding. Mrs. Wade was a retired divisional director of Maryland Vocational Rehabilitation. She received a master’s degree from the University of Maryland and a doctor of philosophy degree in education administration from American University in Washington, D.C. Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include two sons, Richard Allen Wade of Prince Frederick, Md., and Cary Paul Wade of Greenbelt, Md.; a daughter, Janet Wade Clukay of Seabrook Island; a brother, Lawrence Fielding of Falmouth, Va.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jack Whitehead officiating. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society and the National Institute for Literacy. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN G. WILLIAMS

Helen G. Williams, widow of Isiah Williams Sr., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 16, 1924, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jimmy Garrett Sr. and Elizabeth Garrett. Mrs. Williams accepted Christ in her youth and joined Orangehill RMUE Church. In 1993, she became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the choir. Survivors include six sons, Isiah, Leroy, Robert and Prince Williams, all of Sumter, Wesly Williams of Columbia and Henry Williams of Richmond, Va.; four daughters, Elizabeth Washington and Sarah Williams, both of Sumter, Alice Smith of Danville, Va., and Rosanna Brown of Copperas Cove, Texas; a brother, William Whittleton of Sumter; 54 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy Garrett, Willie Garrett and John Garrett; two sisters, Rosa Jones and Mary Williams; and a grandson, Calvin Williams. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Galloway and the Rev. Robert L. Garrett. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 2080 Boulevard Road. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

VARNADA D. GIBSON

MANNING — Varnada Dozier Gibson, 39, wife of Bartholomew Gibson, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1960, in Miami, Fla., she was a daughter of Jerome and Julia Dozier.
The family will receive friends at the home, Route 6, Box 336, Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Road, S.C. 261 West.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JANIE HOLLIDAY

Janie Holliday, widow of Charles Holliday, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie James Winns and Isabella Moore Winns.
The family will receive friends at the home, 24 Walker Ave.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

Ellen B. Lackey died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.

MANNING — Mildred Fields Morrow, 83, widow of Shelby Morrow, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1916, in Norfolk, Va., she was a daughter of the late Junious F. Fields Sr. and Marie Wilson Fields.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister-in-law, Melvina C. Fields, 301 Brunson St., Manning.
Services will be announced by Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton.

REV. ROSS DENNIS

The Rev. Ross Dennis, 88, widower of Hattie Benjamin Dennis, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 21, 1911, in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Ross and Mattie Gaines Dennis. Mr. Dennis was a member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church for 68 years, where he served as a class leader, a steward, and as a member of the senior choir and the Sunday school before becoming the church’s associate pastor. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn R. Ragin of Sumter; a son-in-law, William Ragin of Sumter; six grandchildren, Reginald Dennis Ragin of Sumter, William Ragin Jr. of Concord, N.C., Ronald B. Ragin of Cairo, Egypt, and Alonzo Howard, Kimberly Ragin Singleton and Julianne Ragin Boler, all of Sumter; and a special niece and caretaker, Christine Weston Soto. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Rev. Johnny N. Yeadon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, the Rev. S.R. Miott and the Rev. E. Robert Thomas. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Stewards and trustees of Mt. Pisgah AME Church will be pallbearers. Stewardesses and missionaries of the church will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home, 717 Nelson St. The family will receive friends at the home. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

CARRIE W. FLOWERS

Carrie Watts Flowers, 100, widow of Wade Hampton Flowers, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Socastee, she was a daughter of the late George W. Watts and Matilda Stalvey Watts. Mrs. Flowers was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Sumter Chapter No. 188 Order of Eastern Star and a resident of the Eastern Star Home for the past 13 years. She was an active member and past president of the Iris Garden Club. She was one of the last surviving widows of the Spanish-American War. She was the greatest fan of the Atlanta Braves. Survivors include a son, Henry S. Flowers of Winchester, Va.; two daughters, Carolyn F.N. Ramsey and Tillie F. Keer, both of Sumter; 10 grandchildren, George Nettles III of Mauldin, Wade Nettles of Cheraw, Richard C. Nettles of Baltimore, Md., Chris Nettles of Columbia, Cindy F. Powell of Boca Raton, Fla., Barbara F. Racey of Winchester, Va., Lindsay Flowers of Hammond, La., Louis Keer of Los Angeles, Calif., Charlotte Keer of Chicago, Ill., and Susan Odneal of Kansas City, Mo.; 14 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Jones and the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be residents and staff of Eastern Star Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the respective homes of Carolyn Ramsey and Tillie Keer. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LAKE CITY — Daisy Myers, widow of Joe Myers, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late William and Sara Devine. Survivors include three sons, Benny Myers and Henry Myers, both of Lake City, and Earl Myers of Shallotte, N.C.; two daughters, Mary Thomas of Kingstree and Francenia McKnight of Newark, N.J.; two granddaughters she reared, Dorothy Cameron of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Hattie Myers of Rochester, N.Y.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Faith United Methodist Church, in the White Oak community of Kingstree, with the Rev. Harold Gordon, pastor, and the Rev. Cecil McGill officiating. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SADIE D. WARD

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Sadie Dennis Ward, 79, widow of William Joseph “Joe” Ward, who died in 1979, and formerly of Hanover Road, Burlington, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a six-weeks illness. Born in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Horace and Maggie Dennis Ridgeway. Mrs. Ward was a homemaker. She was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, W. Dennis Ward of Clemmons, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Sue McGuire of Burlington; two brothers, Cleveland Ridgeway and James Ridgeway, both of Manning, S.C.; five sisters, Rounette Lacewell of Summerton, S.C., Mary Garris of Walterboro, S.C., Dorothy Rucker of Beaufort, S.C., Myrtie Moore of Tulsa, Okla., and Carolyn Minner of Marietta, Ga.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Dennis and Leo Ridgeway. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pine Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Stephenson, associate pastor of Glen Hope Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home, and at other times at the daughter’s home, Mary Sue McGuire, 1915 Keogh St., Burlington. Lowe Funeral Home Inc., 2205 S. MAYESVILLE — Lynda Rhodes Wysong, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at her home in Mayesville. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John Whitworth Rhodes and the late Ada Irene Mayes Rhodes. Mrs. Wysong was a member of Salem Black River Presbyterian Church (Old Brick Church) and was a retired clerk. Survivors include two daughters, Letitia “Letty” Baker of Sumter and Ada Lynn Johnson of Mayesville; nine grandchildren, Lynda Jane Carroll, Debra Stone, Alpheus Baker Jr., Sharon Gallahar, Fred G. Collins, Shawn Everett Collins, Curtis Wade Collins, Wendolyn Dee McDowell and Kevin Blake Collins; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Salem Black River Cemetery (Old Brick Church). The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home in Mayesville. MANNING — Hellen Doughty, 68, died Thursday evening, Jan. 20, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia after an illness.
Born Dec. 20, 1931, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Doughty and Mary Maglene Stukes Doughty.
The family will receive friends at her home, 5-L Holly Court Apartments.

MAGGIE L. CAMERON

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Maggie L. Cameron of Melbourne and formerly of Lake City, S.C., widow of Arthur Cameron, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000. Born in Lake City, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Lucinda Cameron. Survivors include two sons, Dallas Cameron and Phillip Cameron, both of Palm Bay, Fla.; a stepson, Jack Cameron of New York, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Martha Cameron and Laura Cameron, both of Lake City; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at East Lake City Holiness Church with Elder Mary Skipper, pastor, and Bishop Odell Fulton officiating. Burial will be in Sandhill Memorial Park. Robert Lee Capers, 48, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 22, 1951, in Sumter County, he was a son of Allen Capers Jr. and the late Epsie Capers. Survivors besides his father of Pinewood include a son, Anthony Stewart of Fort Knox, Ky.; three brothers, Willie Capers, John Capers and James Capers, all of Pinewood; four sisters, Anna Dudley of Decatur, Ga., Rosetta Rowe of Yonkers, N.Y., Mary Spann of Sumter and Betty Coard of Pinewood; a foster brother, Dana Pugh of Pinewood; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Lee Clark and the Rev. Joseph Stukes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be King Robinson, Larry Holland, Willie Conyers, Eric Palmer, Freddie Conyers and Clifton McConico. The funeral procession will leave at 12:15 p.m. from the home, 5785 Bethel Church Road, Pinewood. The family will receive friends at the home. BISHOPVILLE — Dorothy “Dottie” Gamble Davis, 70, wife of Leon Allison Davis Jr., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Manning, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Gamble Sr. and Maude Weatherford Gamble. Mrs. Davis was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville, where she was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class and served faithfully in the Nursery Department for many years. She was a graduate of Manning High School and the Columbia Hospital of Nursing. Mrs. Davis was a retired registered nurse with the Lee County Health Department. Survivors besides her husband of Bishopville include three sons, the Rev. Leon Allison Davis III and his wife Julia Parks Davis of Charlotte, N.C., Richard Edward Davis and his wife Deborah Worley Davis of Greenville and Douglas Martin Davis and his wife Kim Grice Davis of Marion; a brother, James E. Gamble Jr. of Manning; four sisters, Louise Thompson, Thelma DuBose, Wilma Odom and Margaret McFaddin, all of Manning: and five grandchildren, Richard Edward Jr., Scott William, Matthew Perry, Brian Douglas and Allison Lee Ann. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Bishopville with Dr. Kirk L. Smith and the Rev. J. Grady Faulk officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Faith Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home, and at other times at 617 Bethune Highway.
