WILLIE HICKMON

Willie Hickmon died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at his home in Sumter County. Born June 20, 1928, in Lee County, he was a son of the late August and Rebecca Hickmon. Mr. Hickmon attended Lee County public schools and Sumter Area Technical College. From his youth he was an active member of New Haven UM Church, and was a member of first junior choir, a lay speaker, a lay leader, a steward and a choir director. He founded the Golden Four in 1949, and then later changed the name to the Golden Five. For over 50 years he was a devoted member of the Golden Five and was the last original member of the group. The Golden Five celebrated 50 years of singing gospel music in October 1999. He used gospel music as a tool to minister to thousands the good news of Jesus Christ, and he received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his service to the community and gospel music, including an award from the S.C. Department of Corrections for bringing gospel music to so many prisoners over the years. The Golden Five was the first local gospel group to write and record their own songs in this area. He celebrated 47 years of radio ministry in July 1999. Mr. Hickmon was very active during the Civil Rights Movement and voter registration. He was a 33rd degree Mason and co-founded the Universal Masonic Lodge in Sumter. He was self-employed as an automobile mechanic and sold pre-owned vehicles from 1955 until 1994, when he retired after a stroke. He married Lillie Haynesworth in 1954, and to this union four children were born. Survivors include two sons, Willie Hickmon Jr. of Newton, Ms., and Elton Hickmon of Sumter; two daughters, Peggy Hickmon Wilson of Sumter and Latoria Hickmon-Kern of Caledonia, Wis.; a brother, Gussie Hickmon of Monroe, N.C.; five sisters, Mary Pershey of Roselle, N.J., Mamie Washington of Camden, N.J., Elouise Keels Williams of Richmond, Va., and Rebecca Jackson and Betty Walker, both of Philadelphia; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hickmon of Philadelphia and James McDuffie of Lee County. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Weston, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charlie Thomas, pastor of New Haven UM Church, delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in New Haven UM Church Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave from the home, 1732 W. Oakland Ave. The family will receive friends at the home. JAMES F. JAMES SR

James Francis James Sr., 87, husband of Helen Montague James, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at S.C. Episcopal Home at Still Hopes in Cayce. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jasper Thomas and Marie Jenkins James. Mr. James was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Rotary Club, YMCA, Longwood Club, Millwood Club, Roads End Club, AIA member, IPTAY, and a 1934 graduate of Clemson College. He was a founding member of “The Clemson Jungaleers” Dance Band and participated in several other musical groups. He was a member of the board of Sumter Casket Company and past vice president and board member of B.L. Montague Company. He owned James Realty Co. and was an original founding partner of James-DuRant-Matthews and Shelley Architects. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Survivors besides his wife include a son, James Francis James Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Helen Montague James Van Nostrand of Hacker Valley, W.Va., and Marie DuPre James-Roane of Charleston; three brothers, Douglas Bernard James, Robert Shelton James and Charles Burgess James, all of Sumter; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a niece, Ann Kurzenberger Mohr of Simpsonville, and three great nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jasper Thomas James Jr. and William Edwin James. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church with Dr. Kirk Smith and Dr. James Goodroe officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were John C. James, J.T. James III, Michael Thomas James, Bert L. Montague, Robin James, Robert Dale Mohr and Brian Van Nostrand. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Millwood Club, Roads End Club and Longwood Club. The family received friends at the home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 107 E. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to the Skilled Dementia Unit at Still Hopes, Cayce, SC 29169. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

DORETHER J. SMALL

Dorether J. Small, widow of George Small Jr., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home. Born Feb. 26, 1912, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ceasar and Barbara Jacobs. Mrs. Small attended Sumter County public schools and Morris College. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where she was a member of the missionary society. Survivors include a son, Hayward Jacobs Sr., of Sumter; a daughter, Emma J. Gamble of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Mary Jacobs of Sumter; a special granddaughter, Annie Mae Green of Sumter; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, two grandsons and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Jones, the Rev. Durant Jenkins and the Rev. L.W. Walker Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Emma Gamble, 6 Sims St. James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LUTHER B. SPROUSE SR.

MANNING — Luther B. Sprouse Sr., 90, of Route 4, Box 1281-C, Manning, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Spartanburg, he was a son of the late John R. and Lou Ella Dillard Sprouse. Mr. Sprouse was a member of United Methodist Church of Spartanburg. He was employed with the fire department of Spartanburg as a fireman and electrician. After he retired, he moved to Manning. Survivors include his wife, Mary Thomas Sprouse of Florence; his son, Luther B. Sprouse Jr. of Manning; two grandchildren, Timothy A. Sprouse of Darlington and Renae Sprouse; and two great-grandchildren, Myra and Alan Wiggins of Florence. His body was donated to medical research. Ashes will be interned at Oakwood Cemetery in Spartanburg at a later date. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Christian Fellowship Church on Raccoon Road in Manning with the Rev. Michael E. Murdoch officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the service, and at other times at the home of his son, Route 4, Box 1242, East Striper Drive, Manning. BERRY STRICKLAND

Berry Strickland, 79, husband of Doris Cromer Strickland, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at his home. Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Sidney Strickland and Rossie Lee King Strickland. Mr. Strickland was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church. He was a retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant with 20 years of service and a World War II veteran. He was also a retired manufactured housing retailer. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Paul Strickland of Sumter and David Strickland of Columbia; two daughters, Nancy Bell of Anderson and Sandy Williams of Sumter; a sister, Edna Hofler of Belton; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dearld Sterling officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Williamson, Charles Brewer, Bennie Moore, Ray Sanford and Sam Hatfield. Catherine “Blossom” Dubose Tinsley, wife of David A. Tinsley Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000. Born July 30, 1930, in Oswego, she was a daughter of the late Sye and Matilda Brown Dubose. Mrs. Tinsley attended the public schools in Sumter County and Lee County. In her youth she joined Clarks UM Church, and after marriage she joined Emmanuel UM Church, where she was a member of the chancel choir. Survivors besides her husband include three sons, Charles D. Tinsley of Columbia, William B. Tinsley of Columbia and David A. Tinsley Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Linda M. Tinsley of Sumter, Angela Tinsley Brimmer of New Mexico and Darlene A. Tinsley of Greenville; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel UM Church with the Rev. Harrison Ervin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 102 W. MANNING — Josephine Dingle Tindal, wife of Jenkinson Tindal, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home in Summerton. Born Nov. 3, 1926, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Moses Dingle and Ida Smith Dingle. Mrs. Tindal attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, where she served as a member of the usher board, a Sunday school teacher, and the Summer Bible Workshop prior to her illness. She was also a member of the YWCA and a former employee of Days Inn motel and Randolph Landing. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include four sons, Lee Ernest Tindal of Alcolu, Jenkinson Tindal Jr. of Mullins, Moses Tindal of Manning and Willie Tindal of Florence; two daughters, Hestand Buchanan of Bangor, Maine, and Joe Ann McCloud of Manning; five brothers, Isreal Dingle of Miami, Fla., Robert Dingle and Willie Dingle, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Moses Dingle of Hollywood, Fla., and Mel Wilson of Plantation, Fla.; seven sisters, Margaret Wade of Manning, Margie Daney of Severn, Md., Evelyn Wade of Hollywood, Fla., Gladys Carver of Pompano Beach, Fla., Isabell Budgett of Brooklyn, N.Y., Shirley Gilliam of Hollywood, Fla., and Loretta Downey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Albertis Tindal. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God in Christ at Davis Station with the Rev. Rubbeanuion J. Born Sept. 1, 1931, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Gussie Stuckey Toney. She attended Lee County public schools. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy T. Holmes of Columbia, and Louise Toney of New York; three brothers, Everett Toney and Jesse Toney, both of Saginaw, Mich., and Isaac Toney Jr. of Bishopville; five sisters, Mary Cook of Philadelphia, Pa., Ada Lovely of Columbia, Lillie Belle Boykin of Washington, D.C., and Otelia Hickman and Janie Toney, both of Bishopville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. DILLON — Nelson Ray Best, 63, husband of Alice Pate Best, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at St. Eugene Medical Center.
Born May 4, 1936, in Duplin County, N.C., he was a son of the late Rhodolph and Ammie Mathews Best.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kannaday’s Funeral Home Inc.

REX, Ga. — Johnnie Abram, widower of Rosa Lee Cook Abram, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. Born Dec. 9, 1917, in Dalzell, S.C., he was a son of the late T.O. Abram and Carola Givens Abram. Mr. Abram was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church USA in Dalzell. He attended the public schools in Sumter County, S.C. Survivors include three sons, Phillip Abram of Newark, N.J., Joseph Abram of Columbia, S.C., and James Abram of Sumter, S.C.; three daughters, Irene McFadden of Linden, N.J., Martha Jefferson of Sumter and Katie Davis of Rex; two brothers, Kezekiah Abram and Isaac Abram; two sisters, Jane Scriven and Ora Lee Graham, both of Sumter; 20 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, James Edward, Nathaniel and Silas Abram; a sister, Rebecca Abram; and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church USA in Dalzell with Dr. F.D. Colclough, moderator, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edith A. Cooper, widow of Matthew Cooper Sr., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center. Born Feb. 16, 1914, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Sarah Beckham Amos. Mrs. Cooper was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years and served as a member of the gospel choir, trustee wives, adult Sunday school class and senior missionary. She was head of the first floral committee of the church. She attended Sumter County public schools and was employed by the Sumter County Health Department and the Shaw family for over 40 years prior to her retirement. Survivors include two sons, Charles Amos of Los Angeles, Calif., and Matthew Cooper Jr. of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, Priscilla C. Joyner of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Pansy McCleary and Elizabeth Skinner, both of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary Inc. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Born May 19, 1891, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Virginia Scott. Mrs. Desaussure attended Sumter County public schools. Survivors include a daughter, Dora Lee Mixon, and her son-in-law, the Rev. Phillip Mixon; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John AME Church with the Rev. Moses Hamlin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. BISHOPVILLE — Carroll Elkins Hyatt, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000. Born in Bethune, he was a son of the late Harrison Edward and Bernice Rollins Hyatt. Mr. Hyatt retired as president of Home Federal Savings and Loan. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, a World War II veteran, a member of the American Legion and past president of the Rotary Club. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Survivors include a brother, Reginald D. Hyatt of Hannahan; two sisters, Pansy H. Fowler of Bethune and Teressa H. Rivers of Orlando, Fla.; six nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Morris Hyatt; and two sisters, Kathleen Segars and Clarice Stevens. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Burial will be in St. Matthews Methodist Church Cemetery. MANNING — Ernest Parker, husband of Mattie Gregg Parker, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston after an illness. Born May 6, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Preston Parker and Amanda Brunson Parker. Mr. Parker attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth he joined New Light Baptist Church in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five sons, Ernest Parker Jr., Thomas L. Parker and Calvin Parker, all of Manning, Jerry L. Parker of Manhattan, N.Y., and Willie Parker of Decatur, Ga.; a daughter, Julia Parker of Rochester, N.Y.; a granddaughter he reared as his own, Mattie “Lisa” Gregg of Rochester; a stepson, Sammie L. Wilder of Clarkton, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Florine Lesane of Durham, N.C., Dorothy Kelly of Clarkton, and Evelyn Bowman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Bill Parker and Moses Parker, both of Manning; four sisters, Lula Dixon of Summerton, Queen Gregg of Sumter, Ruth Ann Ford of Baltimore, Md., and Idella Berry of Columbia; 37 additional grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Wesley Parker and Albert Parker. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at New Light Baptist Church in the Davis Station community with the Rev. MELBOURNE, Fla. — Maggie Cameron, 92, formerly of Lake City, S.C., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Carenige Nursing Home after an extended illness.
She was the mother of D.L. Cameron and Phillip Cameron, both of Florida.

ROCK HILL — Evelyn Johnson Hinton died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Rock Hill.
Born in Gable, she was a daughter of the late Harrison and Jannie White Johnson.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Johnson Dennis.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Rock Hill.
