ELIZABETH J. STRICKLAND

COLUMBIA — Elizabeth “Betsy” Johnson Strickland, 49, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000. Born in Fort Benning, Ga., she was a daughter of Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Robert A. Johnson and Harriett Kirven Johnson and the granddaughter of the late William Coit Kirven. As a child, she traveled extensively with her family during her father’s deployments. She graduated from A. C. Flora High School in 1969 and was a 1973 graduate of Clemson University. She helped pioneer and was the assistant director of the Pre-Trial Release System in Charlotte. Most recently, she taught computer classes. Mrs. Strickland was also an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include a son, Robert Samuel Strickland of Columbia; a brother, Robert A. Johnson Jr. of West Columbia; a maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Howard Kirven of Columbia; and nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Shandon United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow at the Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

EDITH A. COOPER

Edith Amos Cooper, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.
She was a daughter of the late Julious Amos and Sarah Ann Beckman.
Family will receive friends at the home, 535 Jones St.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

GRACE P. HOWELL

SAGINAW, Mich. — Grace Florence Pomazal Howell, 79, widow of the Rev. John Dee Howell Jr., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in a hospital in Saginaw, Mich. Born Oct. 15, 1920, in Cicero, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Otto Pomazal. She attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Columbia Bible College in Columbia. After marrying, she served as a pastor’s wife at Bible Fellowship Church in Sumter for 23 years and at Jackson Bible Church in Jackson, Miss., for two years. Survivors include a son, the Rev. John D. Howell of Saginaw; three daughters, Lois Coutcher of Cary, N.C., Miriam Gifford, of Carpentersville, Ill., and Deborah Howell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Bridgeport, 2400 King Road, with R.B. Ouellette officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in Eutaw, Ala. Family will receive friends at the church an hour before the service. Memorials can be sent to the Bill Rice Ranch in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

ELMORE SCRIVEN

Elmore Scriven, 67, husband of Mary Lee Robinson Scriven, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at his home. Born Sept. 6, 1932, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Johnson and Fannie Davis Scriven. He received his education in Sumter public schools. He became a member of St. Mark Four Bridge Baptist Church in Dalzell as an early age. He was retired from Georgia Pacific. Survivors in addition to his wife include four brothers, Theodore Scriven and Henry Scriven Jr., both of Sumter, and Carl Scriven and Manning Scriven, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters, Sadie Robinson, Anna Green and Mary Washington, all of Sumter, Katie Billips and Willie Mae Scriven, both of Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by a son David Scriven; a sister, Rosa Lee Scriven; five brothers, Joseph, Robert Sr., Albert, Walter and John Scriven. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the St. Mark Four Bridges Baptist Church in Dalzell, with the Rev. Sammie Simmons officiating and Carl Scriven assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. Scriven’s nephews and church trustees. Flower bearers will be his nieces. The family will receive friends at his home, 328 Bowman Drive. Scriven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES E. BURL

DALZELL — James Earl Burl, 52, husband of Shirley Watts Burl, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Nov. 26, 1946, in Grenada County, Miss., he was the father of Yolanda Y. Burl.
A private service will be held.
Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ISRAEL B. CANTY

Israel B. Canty died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his home, 3710 Four Bridges Road.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

RICHARD DAIS SR.

Richard Dais Sr., widower of Elizabeth Dais, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.
Born June 6, 1918, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Eugene and Allene Rembert Dais.
The family will receive friends at his home, 5810 Stage Coach Road, Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

SAM DENNIS

COLUMBIA — Sam Dennis, 78, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born June 2, 1920, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Lucille Dennis.
The family will receive friends at the home of Annie Young Holiday, 6945 Young St., Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter.

ROSA B. JEFFERSON

Rosa Boykin Jefferson, 82, widow of Louis Jefferson, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.
Born Dec. 13, 1916, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Martha Wilson Boykin.
The family will receive friends at the home, 5135 Borden Road, Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

HELEN R. KEEHAN

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Helen Roberts Keehan, widow of William F. Keehan and daughter of Frank and Helen Roberts, formerly of Sumter, S.C., died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in Jacksonville.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Frank Jr. and Kenneth Roberts, both of Winter Haven, Fla.
All three were born and reared in Sumter.
A memorial service was held Monday in Jacksonville.

June Leon Simon, 65, husband of Helen Chandler Simon, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Allen and Susan Allen Simon.

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Mindred Sweat Sr., 68, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y. Born May 20, 1930, in Clarendon County, S.C., he was the son of Mary Thomas, Route 1, Box 570-B, Paxville, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Paxville. The family will receive friends through Wednesday at the home, Route 1, Box 570-B, Paxville. Blackwell-Jenkins Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

KYLE WHITE

OLANTA — Kyle White, 20, died this morning, Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia from injuries received in an automobile accident. Born Sept. 12, 1978, in Framingham, Mass., he was a son of Delora White and Jack Jackson. He was reared by his grandmother, Clyelle Heyward. The family will receive friends at the home of his grandmother, Clyelle Heyward, 5610 Narrow Paved Road, in the St. John community of Olanta. Services will be announced by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home in Lake City.

HELEN F. ALDEN

COLUMBIA — Helen F. Alden, 84, widow of the late Byron Jackson Alden, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at NHC Healthcare in Sumter. Born in Cohose, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late John Stockwicz and Tessie Delicate Stockwicz. She had resided in Columbia since 1987 and had lived in Fort Myers, Fla., before that time. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic faith. She was a graduate of the Famous Artist School of Stamford, Conn. Survivors include a daughter, Darleen A. Mader of Sumter; a brother, Henry Stockwicz of Stillwater, N.Y.; two sisters, Vye Gooley of Stillwater, N.Y., and Charlotte Wanko of Schagticoke, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley A. Moon of Columbia. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Greenlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home. Greenlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SALLY A. DUBOSE

PINEWOOD — Sally Albert Dubose died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born May 12, 1932, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Gilbert Dubose and Eliza Pleasant Dubose. Reared in the Sandhill community of Pinewood, he attended Fulton and Pinewood schools. Mr. Dubose was a lifelong member of Zion Hill AME Church. He moved to New York in his 20s and worked as a welder. He returned to South Carolina in 1960 and worked as a welder at Town and Country and farmed until he retired. Survivors include his companion, Lucille James of Pinewood; two sons, Cory James of Pinewood and Timothy Mack of New York; two daughters, Vanessa Mack of New York and Lisa Dubose of Pinewood; seven brothers, Samuel Dubose of Columbia, and Arthur Dubose, Alonza Dubose, Henry Dubose, Matthew Dubose, Moses Dubose and John Henry Dubose, all of Pinewood; eight sisters, Julia H. Pleasant of Pinewood, Francis Boston of Newport News, Va., Dorcus Ridgill of Manning, Susan Brown and Margaret Wright, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Nellie D. Budden, Caroline D. Budden and Rosa Henderson, all of Sumter; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gilbert Smith Dubose, David Dubose and William James Dubose. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Hill AME Church, in the Sandhill community of Pinewood, with the Rev. Albert Thompson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Walker, the Rev. Benjamin Boston and the Rev. Stanley Hayes. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of the late Mr. Dubose and Lucille James, Route 1, Box 144, Pinewood, and also at the home of Hazel and Caroline Budden, 571 McCray’s Mill Road, Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

INFANT JOSHUA M. FLYNN

Joshua Michael Flynn, 3-month-old son of Michael James Flynn and Rebecca Ann Pack, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Survivors besides his parents include a sister, Brooklyn Pack; his paternal grandparents, Sidney and Frances Flynn; and his maternal grandparents, Malcolm and Linda Pack, all of Sumter. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. George Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at 3745 Osteen Road. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GENEVA JAMES

Geneva James, widow of Russell James, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 27, 1906, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Harvin and Eliza Weary. Mrs. James was reared in a Christian environment and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Congruity Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Organization. She was a member of the Job and Joint Stock Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth McFadden and Doretha Durant-Anderson, both of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Frances Sanders of Temple Hill, Md.; an adopted son, Robert Harvin of Paterson, N.J.; an adopted daughter, Judith Wilder of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Bessie Jones and Elizabeth Wilder, both of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Frank James; a brother, Thomas Harvin; and two sisters, Louise Brunson and Octavia Ford. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Congruity Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dennis Brock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 1866 Fletcher Drive. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

CLAYTON LOWDER SR.

Clayton Lowder Sr., 84, husband of Madelyn K. Lowder, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 9, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thomas Junious and Alice Tindal Lowder. Mr. Lowder was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sumter. He was self-employed as a well known farmer and businessman, which included a cotton gin, a farm supply business and grocery store. He was captain of his football team his senior year at Edmunds High School. He is survived by his wife, Madelyn K. Lowder; four children from his first marriage to the late Jho Eleanor Player Lowder, two sons, Clayton Lowder Jr. and Jimmy Lowder, both of Sumter, and two daughters, Alice Lowder Robertson and Betty Jho Lowder, both of Sumter; also two sons of another marriage, Michael Lowder and Steven M. Lowder; a brother, Leon Clyde Lowder of Eastover; three sisters, Jessie Mae Lowder Michaels of Dayton, Ohio, Corrine Lowder Dukes of Manning and Virginia Lowder Shade of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Tindal Lowder, McLaurin Lowder, T.M. “Marion” Lowder and Carl Lowder; and two sisters, Gertrude Lowder Childers and Lydia Lowder Barwick. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John C. Ropp Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Clay Lowder, Milton Lowder, Jim Lowder, Jay Rowland, Richard Hilton, Tony Outlaw, Rhode Cherry, Garland Hobgood and John Bramlett. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Hugh Stoddard, Dr. Phil Brandt, Dr. Lee Givens, Dr. Jerry Jackson and Truman Hooper. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Lowder, 2145 Cory Road. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150, or St. Mark Methodist Church, Broad Street, Sumter, SC 29150, or to the charity of one’s choice. ROBERT H. PHILLIPS

Robert H. Phillips, 71, husband of Willie Mae Walker Phillips, formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Chincoteague, Va., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Baltimore City, Md., he was a son of the late Charles H. Phillips and Alma Watson Phillips Roberts. Mr. Phillips was retired from Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Church of God in Pocomoke, Md. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Robert Phillips Jr. of Fairmont, W.Va.; three daughters, Anjelica Phillips of Sumter, Susan Phillips of Florida and Alma Jean Phillips of Fairmont; three stepsons, Adam Johnson of Seattle, Wash., John Springfield, stationed in Korea, and Walter Springfield of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Mary Larche of Sumter; and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hubbard Funeral Home in Baltimore, Md. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Richie Highway, Baltimore. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
