JULIA M. THOMPSON

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Julia Mae Thompson, widow of Deacon Willie Thompson, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Windsor House Nursing Facility. Born July 26, 1910, in Jordan, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William and Katie Lee Conyers. Mrs. Thompson attended school in Clarendon County, S.C., and in her youth confessed Christ and joined Holly Hill Baptist Church. Later she moved to Sumter, S.C., and joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. B.F. Weston. She served faithfully as a member of the deaconess board, missionary society and prayer band. She was selected as Jehovah’s Woman of the Year in 1961. She moved to Jersey City, N.J., in 1963 and joined Saint John Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. B. F. Johnson. She relocated to Huntsville, Ala., in 1982 after the death of her husband. The Rev. Dr. Homer McCall of St. John AME Church served as her pastor during her later years. She was a caregiver to all in need and managed Canderella Restaurant for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Willie M. Heyward of Huntsville and Elease Johnson of Newark, N.J.; three foster daughters, Louise Pearson of Baltimore, Bessie Dease of Washington, D.C., and Dorothy Clark of Jersey City, N.J.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Groves and Minister Irene Anthony. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of Pearl James, 226 Palmetto St., Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

HARMON C. TURNER

LYNCHBURG — Harmon C. “Hop” Turner, 62, husband of Phebe Floyd Turner, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of Harmon N. Turner and the late Lottie Brewer Turner. Mr. Turner was a member of Calvary Nazarene Church and attended Trinity Methodist Church. He was retired from Superior Machine Company in Florence. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg and his father and stepmother, Madge Turner, of Paxville include a son, Dennis Elmore of Lynchburg; two daughters, Lisa Turner of Lynchburg and Phyllis Camlin of Brandon, Fla.; four brothers, Claude Turner, Raymond Turner, Troy Turner and Charles Turner, all of Sumter; four sisters, Edna Mae Stegner, Daisy Kirkpatrick and Lucille Austin, all of Sumter, and Rebecca Burke of Hookerton, N.C.; three grandchildren; two stepbrothers, Robert Lawrence and Ernest Lawrence, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and two stepsisters, Lois Ann Caughman of Sumter and Jeanette Morgan of Wilmington, N.C. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard H. Turner; and a sister, Berlether Turner. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Olanta. Pallbearers will be nephews and a brother-in-law. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Bertha Floyd, 2360 Old CC Road, Lynchburg. WILLIE R. BREVARD

BRONX, N.Y. — Willie Dean Robinson Brevard, 85, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Born March 22, 1914, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late David and Sarah Dow Robinson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Magnolia R. Williams, 14 Mitchell St., Sumter.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, S.C.

SAMMIE L. DAVIS

MAYESVILLE — Sammie L. Davis, husband of Fannie Davis, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Hopewell Health Care Center in Sumter.
Born April 15, 1932, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Lee and Emma McBride Davis.
The family will receive friends at the home of Fannie Davis, 106 Sumter St., Mayesville.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter.

INFANT JOSHUA M. FLYNN

Joshua Michael Flynn, three-months-old son of Michael James Flynn and Rebecca Ann Pack, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

SURCEALIA J. McKELLAR

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Surcealia Rose “Sing” James McKellar, 82, widow of Albert Julius McKellar, died Thursday afternoon, April 22, 1999, at Premeire Living Nursing Center at Lake Waccamaw, N.C. Born Sept. 2, 1916, in Pinewood in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Matthew “Bub” Jefferson James and Missouri Austin James. Funeral services will be held at 11 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Chapel AME Zion Church in Leland, N.C., with the Rev. Donald R. Mapson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Pinewood at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Shaw’s and Son Mortuary, 520 Red Cross St., Wilmington is in charge of arrangements. Fleming Funeral Home in Summerton is in charge of local arrangements.

CARL B. EPPS JR.

BEAUFORT — Carl Belden Epps Jr., 80, of Sam’s Point Road, widower of Myrtle Godley Epps, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Feb. 9, 1919, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Dr. Carl B. Epps and Mary Purdy Epps. Mr. Epps attended The Citadel and the University of South Carolina. He was a major in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served in China, Korea and the South Pacific. He retired as the veterans affairs officer for Beaufort County. He was a member of Carteret Street United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8760, a charter member of the Amvets Post 70 of Port Royal and a member of the Golf Professionals Club of Lady’s Island. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Carl B. Epps III and Diane Greco Epps of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Epps Culley and Ronald F. Culley of Eastover; two brothers, the Rev. Ralph I. Epps of Edenton, N.C., and Robert P. Epps of Lugoff; and two grandsons. Gravesides services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Copeland Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Carteret Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 788, Beaufort, SC 29901. ALCOLU — Donald Edward “Jack” Taylor Sr., 81, widower of Tennie Clyde Brown Taylor, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Oct. 28, 1917, in Gilbert, he was a son of the late James Andrew Taylor and Sarah Merab Harmon Taylor. Mr. Taylor retired in 1982 as a machinist for Georgia-Pacific and was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Wilson. Survivors include five sons, Jack Harvey Taylor of Cayce, Dr. Gerald Dale Taylor of New Zealand, Ashley Claude Taylor of Lexington, Paul Monroe Taylor of Manning and Donald Edward Taylor Jr. of Walhalla; two daughters, Faye Reighley of Greenwood and Miriam Johnson of Manning; three brothers, Archie Taylor of Winnsboro, Fet Taylor of Alcolu and Thomas Taylor of Blythewood; two sisters, Alene Parham of New Jersey and Margaret Martin of Columbia; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu with the Rev. Norman Rogers and the Rev. George Gain officiating. KENNETH L. McELVEEN

DAVIS STATION — Kenneth L. McElveen, 60, husband of Glendora Humphries McElveen, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, after an illness. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Arthur Hannibal McElveen and Alma Jane Floyd McElveen Feagin. Mr. McElveen was founder of K & M Manufacturing Co. in Barnwell. He served in the S.C. National Guard and was a member of the American Legion, Woodmen of the World, Bass Anglers Society and Elks Club. He attended McKenzie Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides his wife of Davis Station include twin daughters, Rhonda McElveen of Barnwell and Wanda McElveen of Blythewood; six brothers, James McElveen, the Rev. Jack McElveen, Everett McElveen, Jerry McElveen and Gordon McElveen, all of New Zion, and Wiley McElveen of Turbeville; and two sisters, Colee Lee of Sumter and Louise Floyd of Lake City; and a “granddog,” Mackey LaRue McElveen. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Allen Floyd, Elwood McElveen and Hubert McElveen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McKenzie Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Sumter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta. CATHERINE RICHARDSON

Catherine Richardson died Thursday, April 22, 1999. Born July 29, 1921, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Sammie Richardson and Corine Richardson. Survivors include six brothers, Robert Richardson of Sumter, James Edward Richardson of Somers Point, N.J., Bennie Earl Richardson of New York, N.Y., Willie Richardson and Herbert Richardson, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Charles Richardson of Springfield, Mass.; four sisters, Virginia Williams of the home, Virginia Davis of Marion, Pauline Hart of Washington, D.C., and Doris Purdie of Florida; two stepbrothers, Sam and Moses McFadden, both of Sumter; and four stepsisters, Wilhemenia Lesand, Rosa Mae Sims and Lucille Wilson, all of Sumter, and Jessie Mae Butler of New Zion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sammie Lee Richardson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. T.O. Everette officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friends of the family will be pallbearers, and members of the Mother’s Club will be floral bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home, 709 Branch St. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LAKE CITY — Winslow “Brick” Allen, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia.
He was a son of the late Fred and Flossie Allen.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and her husband, Christine and Leroy Gamble, 523 Palm Circle, Lake City.
Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home.

NELL W. BUSH

MANNING — Nell White Bush, 78, widow of John Edward Bush, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 26, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Franklin White and Margaret Fort White. Mrs. Bush was a retired store clerk, having worked at Carter’s 5 & 10 and Carter’s Antiques. She attended Manning First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Walter E. “Roadpacker” Bush of Manning; two daughters, Clemmie Pickelsimer of Columbia and Wendy Bush of Manning; three grandchildren, Renee Bush, Kimberly Hill and Brian Pickelsimer; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Sim Smith officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be E.G. “Slick” Gibbons, Danny Thompson, Jim Weatherly, Terry Alsbrooks, Richard Berry and Maceo Pack. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 802 W. Huggins St. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 49 W. EUGENE CANTY

NEWARK, N.J. — Eugene Canty died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at East Orange General Hospital in East Orange, N.J. Born June 6, 1946, in Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of Smith Canty and the late Louvenia Dingle Canty. Mr. Canty attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Upon moving to Newark, he attended Little Rock Holiness Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Pea-Barney Paper Company in Newark. Survivors besides his father of Manning, S.C., include a son, Shawn Henderson of Newark; six brothers, Willie Canty and Joseph Canty, both of Newark, LeRoy Canty of Irvington, N.J., William Canty of East Orange, N.J., Deacon Albert Canty and Deacon Roman Canty, both of Manning; and three sisters, Sarah Pearson, Frances Dingle and Evangelist Eloise Pompey, all of Manning; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Jonathan Mouzon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam Miller and the Rev. Otis Wright. Burial will be in State Cemetery in the Jordan community of Manning. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Hoover and Sarah Pearson, 322 S. Mill St., Manning. E.W. DIX JR.

E.W. Dix Jr., formerly of Sumter, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
He was a son of E.W. Dix Sr. and Ruby Bookhardt Dix.
The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 874 Manchester Road.

HASKEL JENKINS

Air Force Fire Chief
Haskel Jenkins, husband of Shirley Givens Jenkins, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 16, 1930, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Bud and Marie Spann Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins attended Sumter public schools and was a 1950 graduate of Lincoln High School. He was a faithful, dedicated and lifelong member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church where he served in numerous ministries. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was trained as a fire protection specialist. During his 26 years of honorable military service, he received numerous awards, decorations and accolades. These honors include the Bronze Star with valor, Meritorious Service Award with two oak leaf clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with valor, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal with six clusters and the Marksmanship Ribbon. He was recognized as Fire Fighter of the Year for P.A.C.A.F. (Pacific Air Forces) in the Far East. Upon retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Chief Master Sgt. Jenkins was selected as fire chief at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass. His many achievements include the transition of weapon systems and personally designing the new, state-of-the-art fire protection facility currently in service at Westover Air Force Base. In honor of his retirement as fire chief, the street on which the fire station is located was named Jenkins Avenue. He was a member of the International Fire Fighters Association of Fire Chiefs, A.F. Sergeant Association, Disabled American Veterans Association, Habitat for Humanity, Sumterites Association Inc., American Legion Post No. 202, VFW Post No. 10813, where he served as commander, Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357 (P.H.A.), CC Johnson Consistory No. 136, in Columbia, Cairo Temple No. 125, in Columbia and Sumter Shrine Club. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Freddie McCullough; a grandson, Andre McCullough; his mother-in-law, Margaret Givens; a brother, Fred Loney of Cheltanham, Md.; two uncles; five aunts; a nephew and a niece. He was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Dale Jenkins. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle officiating, assisted by the Rev. Harrison D. Ervin, the Rev. James W. McGill, and the Rev. Hezekiah Ellis. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park with full military rites. The closed casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 today at Job’s Mortuary Inc. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

EUNICE M. JONES

DILLON — Eunice Mallett Jones, widow of Samuel Jones, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 30, 1998, at St. Eugene Medical Center. Born in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ambrose Tucker Mallett and Gracie Lucas Mallett. Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Manning Training School. She received a bachelor’s degree in home economics at South Carolina State College and a master’s degree in education from Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va. She taught for 23 years in the Dillon County public schools. After her retirement, she received additional certification in the field of early childhood education, and then was employed an additional 12 years with pre-school children. She served as director of the Head Start program for Dillon and Marion counties. For more than 50 years Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of Manning Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk for 35 years, and formerly served on the missionary and deaconess boards. She established the first nursery school in the church. She organized and supervised the first Office of Economic Opportunity for Dillon County. She served as adviser for the Senior Citizen Organization, secretary and treasurer for the Dillon County Democratic Party, committee chairwoman for the Dillon County Food and Nutrition Program, member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Dillon Chapter of Retired Educators Association, past president and treasurer of the Criterion Club, past A.M. Euclid Chapter No. 24 Order of Eastern Star, NAACP, vice president of the Council on Aging of Dillon and member of Omicron Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Survivors include three sons, Samuel A. Jones Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., James C. Jones, M.D., of Fayetteville, N.C., and Paul Jones of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Edward U. Mallett of Dillon; two sisters, Willie E. Conyers and Jewell M. Ellerby, both of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Services will be held at 1 p.m Tuesday at Manning Baptist Church in Dillon with the Rev. L.M. Mungo officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. LYNCHBURG — Jason Mack Lynch, 75, husband of Lorena Fincher Lynch, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Olanta, he was a son of the late Mack Lynch and Lillie DeFee Lynch. Mr. Lynch was a member and former deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a member of American Legion Post No. 140 in Lynchburg. He was a retired farmer and a retired supervisor at Becton-Dickinson. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jason Jr. and Jean Lynch of Donalds, and Randy and Betsy Lynch, Neal and Melissa Lynch and Larry and Drucie Lynch, all of Sumter; four sisters, Edith L. White of Coward, Laurie L. Caulder and Mae L. Jordan, both of Olanta, and Juanita L. McFaddin of Kingstree; eight grandchildren, Chris Lynch, Brent Lynch, Rob Quetti, Beth Quetti, Michael Quetti, William Lynch, Katherine Lynch and Heather Lynch; and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Lynch. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. Robert Griggs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter, and at other times at the home.
