Townville - Linda Ann Cobb Cain, 57 of 1215 Ramage Rd., died Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Born in Oconee County in 1950, she was an employee at Kendall Mfg. She was a member of Townville Church of God.

Surviving are daughters: Teresa Hollifield and husband Matt of Westminster and Angie Prater and husband Bryant of Townville; four grandchildren; brothers: Charles, Robert, Sonny, Jimmy and Billy Cobb of Seneca and Don Cobb of Westminster; sisters: Betty Perry of Seneca, Nancy Cobb of Townville and Kathy Sosebee of Seneca; and special friend Jake Carter of Westminster.

Her parents Hubert and Annie Saylors Cobb, brothers Joe and Edward Cobb and daughter’s father Earl Cain precede her in death.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Monday, August 13, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Fair Play Church of God Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 2:30 pm, prior to the service at the funeral home. The family is at the home of daughter Teresa Hollifield, 164 Grant Rd., Westminster. Flowers are accepted.

Frances Harley Sandifer

SENECA – Frances Harley Sandifer, 89, widow of former Seneca Mayor William E. Sandifer, Jr., died Sept. 12, 2007 at Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility.

Born in Dorchester, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Govan Bragg and Margaret Bell Harley. She retired as a teacher at Seneca High School after 30 years of teaching. She was selected as Seneca High School’s “Teacher of the Year” in 1974. She received her bachelor’s degree from Lander College and her Masters Degree from Clemson University. Mrs. Sandifer was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where she remained active until ill health prevented her attendance. She was a member of the Caring Ministry and Circle #2 of the church. She was a licensed Funeral Director and operated Seneca Mortuary with her husband for many years. She was past President of the Seneca Pilot Club and the Seneca Woman’s Club. She was a member of the Once-A-Week Club, Cosmopolitan Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and Seneca Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She also served several years as a member of the Seneca Planning Commission.

Surviving: State Representative Bill Sandifer and wife Sandra of Seneca; Dr. Paul Sandifer and wife Betty of Charleston, SC; Rev. Ray Sandifer and wife Linda of Vinton, Va.; daughter- in-law, Stacie Sandifer of Castro Valley, CA; eleven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Frank Sandifer. The family is appreciative of special caregivers, Chiquita Frank and Angie Chapman, along with the staff of Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility.

Services will be conducted 2:00 PM, Friday, at St. Mark United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Atrium of the church following the service. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility, 298 Memorial Dr., Seneca, SC 29678, or the Charity of one’s choice.

The family is at the home of a son, Rep. Bill Sandifer, 112 Cardinal Dr., Seneca, SC.

Seneca – Carl “Steve” Stephen Brown, 46, of 9 Kelley Drive, died Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Born in Oconee County in 1961, he was retired from J.P. Stevens where he was a color shop fabricator. Steve was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church in Lyman. He was a veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are mother of the children Karen Annette Lyle Brown, son Tim Brown of Walhalla, daughter Kayla Brown of Walhalla, brother Richard Nix of Seneca, sisters Joy Smith and Pamela Stroud both of Greer, three grandchildren, TJ Brown, Hunter Brown and Chloe Brown, fiancé Elizabeth Phillips of Seneca, Kegan Phillips, Mary Phillips, Bessie Phillips and Katie Crain.

His parents Carl Edward and Frieda Annette Farmer Brown predecease him.

Funeral services will be 4 PM, Thursday, September 13, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at First Baptist Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 2-4 PM, Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted or memorials in Steve’s memory may be made in care of Sandifer Funeral Home, PO Box 69, Westminster, SC 29693. The family is at their respective homes.

Dorothy Ann Wilson Grogan, 94, wife of the late John William Grogan formerly of Freeman Street passed away Friday September 7, 2007 in Southern Pines, NC.

Born in Oconee County, SC June 18, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Jasper William And Fannie Mae Lowe Wilson. She was retired from Beacon Manufactory and was a member of Clearmont Baptist Church.

Mrs. Grogan is survived by:

Grandsons: Greg Keith Grogan and wife Paula and their son Ian and William J. Grogan, III and wife Cathleen
Sister: Edith Lee

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 13, 2007 from the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster, SC with burial to follow at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Westminster.

Salem, SC – Astrid E. Sowrey, 93, of 22 Tradewinds Way, died Thursday, September 06, 2007 at Morningside Assisted Living in Seneca.

Born in Holstebro, Denmark in 1914, Mrs. Sowrey was a homemaker.

Surviving are sons Brian S. Sowrey and wife Kathi of Salem and Richard B. Sowrey and wife Elaine P. Sokoloff of Clear Lake Shores, TX, four grandchildren Lita Karin Goodwin and husband David of Raleigh, NC, Hans Albert Sowrey and wife Marie of Ooltewah, TN, Lauren Gayle Sowrey of San Antonio, TX and Steven Lee Sowrey of Austin, TX, three great grandchildren Brandon Sowrey and Tyler Sowrey of Ooltewah, TN and Connor Goodwin of Raleigh, NC.

Her husband Albert Sowrey and parents Valdemar and Carla Pedersen Birn precede her in death.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Upstate S.C. Chapter, PO Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044.

Seneca – Mildred Lee Prichard, 90, of 140 Ridgecrest Rd., died Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at the Bryan Center in Brevard, NC.

Born in Seneca in 1916, she was a homemaker and a member of Clearmont Baptist Church.

Surviving are son Herman Prichard of Westminster, five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Her husband, Edward Griffin Prichard and parents Lemuel Oscar and Bertha Lavonia Pitts precede her in death.

Funeral services will be 2 PM, Friday, September 7, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow in Clearmont Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2 PM, prior to the service on Friday. The family is at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Foothills Foundation, 390 Keowee School Rd., Seneca, SC 29672.

Seneca – Herman Holbrooks, 68 of 660 Twin Lakes Rd., died Sunday, April 29, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Long Creek on April 21, 1939 he was retired from the spinning department of JP Stevens, Clemson Plant. Mr. Holbrooks also enjoyed farming and was a beekeeper. He was of the Church of God of Prophecy faith.

Survivors include wife, Lois Edna Kelley Holbrooks of the home, sons Randy Holbrooks and wife Kathryn of Seneca and Glenn Holbrooks and wife Shelby also of Seneca, brothers Clifton, L.C., Bobby and Robert Holbrooks, sisters Nell Nalley and Eunice Dickerson and one granddaughter Jessica Leigh Ann Holbrooks.

His parents Jess and Minnie Turner Holbrooks and brothers Cline and Clayton Holbrooks precede him in death.

Funeral services will be 2 PM, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Heritage Memorial Gardens, Hwy 11, Westminster.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted. The family is at the residence.

Born December 12, 1993 in Oconee County, he was a Westminster Middle School 7th Grade Student and attended Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors: Mother - Judy Loretta Harbin Johns and companion Gregory Warren Crooks of the home, Father - Gary Lee Johns of Seneca.

Sylvia Judith Sublette Bennett passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home April 14, 2007 after an extended illness, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She was born in the USAF Base hospital at Wright-Patterson, Ohio on September 27, 1960 to Julia Rose Wright Sublette and Richard Ashmore Sublette.

She was preceded in death by her husband Philip Samuel Bennett. Sylvia leaves behind her parents, brothers Christopher Mark Sublette of Falls Church Virginia, Wright Daniel Sublette of Shalimar Florida, Carey Patrick Sublette and his wife Catherine Dovel and their daughters Cayley and Kedron Sublette of Rancho Cucamonga California.

She also leaves behind Uncles and Aunts, Colonel Richard R. Simpson and Sarah W. Simpson of Upatoi, Georgia and Joseph Shepard Sublette and Janet B. Sublette of Sumter South Carolina.

Sylvia, being the daughter of a career Air Force officer, spent time between moves in Westminster, S.C. with her two grandmothers, Jessie Ava Tannery Sublette and Anne Belle Watkins Wright. From one she learned of a generous spirit and the love of gardening and cooking, from the other she learned the joy of laughter and beauty of a trained singing voice.

When in elementary school in California she was identified as an academically gifted student. Later at Meigs Junior High School in Shalimar, Florida she was singled out for her achievements academically, her leadership ability and her athletic ability. Gifted with a fine singing voice, she won the Choctawhatchee High School talent contest in 1977 and studied voice with Trudie Sherwood at Pensacola Junior College.

She sang in the choirs at Shalimar United Methodist Church and the Trinity UMC of Fort Walton Beach and recently at the Shalimar Presbyterian Church where she was a member.

She served as a counselor on the crisis line for the Bridgeway Center and was honored in 2005 as the outstanding mental health volunteer for the year by the Mental Health Association of Okaloosa/Walton Counties, Florida. Before her death she was serving as a volunteer at the Bridgeway Mental Health Center of Fort Walton Beach and was looking forward to more job training she was to receive in Pensacola, in May.

Graveside service will be held on Tuesday May 1, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Westminster First Baptist Church Memorial Park with Dr. George A. Harper of the Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will receive friends at the Sandifer Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45.
Sandifer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Floral tributes will be accepted.

Walhalla – David Wyly Certain, 43 of 132 Spruce Dr., died Friday, April 20, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Oconee County on October 27, 1963 he was a lineman foreman with Blue Ridge Electric and attended the United Assembly of God in Seneca.

Surviving are his wife, Luann Bolt Certain of the home, son Hunter David Certain and daughter Madison Darby Certain also of the home, father Wyly Certain, mother, Dale M. Kelley both of Westminster, sisters Elaine C. Lee of Westminster and Gina C. Chapman of Sunset.

Funeral services will be 3:30 PM, Monday, April 23, 2007 in the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home in Westminster. Burial will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 – 3 PM, Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in David’s memory may be made to the United Assembly of God Building Fund, 11075 Watson Dr., Seneca, SC 29672. The family is at the residence.

Westminster – Hazel Marcengill Chastie, 78 of 409 Retreat St., died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Born in Westminster, SC on January 16, 1929 she was retired from Jantzen Inc. where she worked in quality control. Surviving are son Scott Chastie and wife Melissa of Seneca, daughter Theresa Hyman of Westminster, brother Buck Marcengill and wife Rose of Westminster, Danny Marcengill and wife Sandra of Seneca, sisters Jane Alexander and husband Maurice of Walhalla and Helen Frederick and husband Bob of Westminster, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her late husband Adger Sloan Chastie, her parents Rufus R. and Vera Freeman Marcengill, brother Roy Marcengill and sisters Rachel Carroll, Ina Ruth McQueen and Mary Ann Frederick precedes her in death.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Faith Baptist Church in Westminster. Burial will follow at Heritage Memorial Gardens, Hwy. 11, Westminster.

The family will receive friends 1-2 PM, Thursday, April 12. 2007, prior to service at the church. The family is at the residence.
