JONES BELL

GREENWOOD -- James Jones Bell, 82, resident of Sterling House and former resident of Elizabeth Avenue, husband of Ruby Breazeale Bell, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Sterling House.

Born in Elbert County, Ga. on August 27, 1922, he was the son of the late Henry A. and Marietta Dye Bell. He was a graduate of Fortsonia High School in Fortsonia, Ga. He was retired from Monsanto (now Solutia) as traffic control manager with more than over 24 years of service.

He was member of South Main Street Baptist Church, a member and teacher of the Couples II Sunday school class for more than 30 years and formerly served as a deacon of the church. He was a member and past president of Gideon's International, Greenwood North Camp and was very active in conducting prison, nursing home and assisted living ministries for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Sterling House are daughters, Susan Bell Lord of Travelers Rest and Angela Bell Dorn of Troy; brother, Hubert A. Bell of Elberton, Ga.; sisters, Frances B. Hudson and Catherine Bell, both of Elberton, Ga.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday from the Blyth Funeral Home chapel, Greenwood by the Revs. Preston Foxworth, Henry Schwarzman, John Abrams and David Corbitt officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home of Lawrence and Sarah Breazeale, 112 Sheffield Rd. in Greenwood and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

JOSEPH A. 'JOE' HEWELL

GREENVILLE -- Joseph A. "Joe" Hewell, 86, husband of Bessie "Bess" Berry Hewell, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at his residence.

He was the son of the late Thomas A. and Hassie Mae Pulliam Hewell. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Stewards. He was Chairman of 291 Enterprises, which operated a number of fine restaurants, including Howard Johnsons, Bonanza, and Talk Of The Town. He also co-founded the national Red Lobster restaurant chain. He served on the boards of Ryan's Family Steak House, Southern Bank and Trust, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, National Restaurant Association, and the Greenville Country Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3, Elks and Sertoma Clubs. He was a United States Air Force Veteran having served during WWII.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Joseph A. Hewell, Jr. of Taylors; brothers, Clyde and Tom Hewell, both of Elberton, Ga.; and grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland St., Greenville, S.C. 29601 or to Miracle Hill Ministries, PO Box 2546, Greenville, SC 29602.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with visitation to follow the service at the church.

MARY B. ENGLISH

ANDERSON -- Mary Bloxton English, of 3005 Le Conte Road, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Frankfort, Ky., she was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church. She was a Christian worker and formerly employed in the Psychology Departments at Georgia Tech and Clemson University. She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and Southern Baptist Theology Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Surviving are widower, Dr. Carl English of the home; and her sister, June Dever of Atlanta.

She was the daughter of the late Conway R. Bloxton and Leland Butler Bloxton. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carla Dean English.

Graveside services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at The McDougald Funeral Home.

Flowers are optional. The family suggests memorials be made to Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, S.C. 29621.

MRS. GENEVA W. GREENE

Former JP Stevens Employee

SENECA - Mrs. Geneva W. Greene, 74, of 105 E. South 6th St., Seneca, SC, entered into rest December 7, 2004 at Oconee Memorial Hospital, Seneca, SC.

Funeral services will be 3PM Sunday, December 12, 2004 at New Harmony United Methodist Church with Rev. Willie Lawson officiating. Interment will be in Oconee Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum.

Mrs. Greene served in United Methodist's Women Organization, Communion Stewards-Chairperson, and Missions-Chairperson. She was a member of New Harmony United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James Greene, Seneca; 4 daughters, Jeanette Greene, Sandra (T.D.) Holland, Sr., both of Seneca, SC, Phyllis M. Greene, Tulsa, OK & Lorraine Greene (Timothy) Brightharp, Aiken, SC; one son, Mitchell Greene, Seneca, SC; 4 sisters, Inez Howard, Nancy Turner, both of Washington, DC, Equilla Williams & Ruth W. Hubert, both of Philadelphia, PA; 2 brothers, Samuel (Mary) Williams, Philadelphia, PA & Kenneth Williams, Washington, DC; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Friends may call her residence of the Gilbert's Funeral Parlar, Seneca, after 1PM Saturday, (864) 882-0242. The remains will lie in state in the church from 2PM until the hour of service. The funeral procession will assemble at the residence at 2:30PM, Sunday, December 12, 2004.

NELLA PAYNE SPAKE

ANDERSON -- Nella Payne Spake, 61, wife of Gary L. Spake of 402 E. Fredericks St., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at the Hospice House in Anderson.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by The McDougald Funeral Home. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The family will be at the home.

ROSA MAE HOOVER LEWIS

SENECA -- Rosa Mae Hoover Lewis, 85, of 902 B East South 2nd St., died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca.

Funeral services will be announced by Adams Mortuary, Seneca.

The family will be at the home.

VIRGINIA JONES

March 24, 1921 -- Dec. 5, 2004

WESTMINSTER -- Virginia Jones, 83, of 192 Virginia Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at her home.

Born in Oconee County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Frances Childers Jones. She was the last member of her immediate family. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Westminster. She was employed as a sales clerk/greeter at Wal-Mart in Seneca.

Surviving are nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in the death by two brothers, Henry Immanuel and Arthur Jones.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, West Oak Highway, Westminster by the Rev. Edward R. Scott; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a,m. Saturday.

No visitation is planned.

The family will be at their respective homes.

The Unity Mortuary of Anderson is in charge of arrangements.

'BERNIE' MAHLAR

CENTENARIAN DIES

ABBEVILLE -- Bernard "Bernie" Paul Mahlar, 100, of 208 Ellis Ave., widower of Elizabeth (Betty) Woodyard Mahlar, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Abbeville Nursing Home.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1904, in Woodbury, Conn. He graduated from Woodbury, Conn., public schools. He was associated with Jehovah's Witnesses and after moving to Glendale, Calif., in 1923 he continued his Bible studies with the Glendale congregation and later he worked for many years as a missionary for Jehovah's Witnesses under the direction of The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society in Brooklyn, N.Y. He preached the good news of God's Kingdom in his country, including both the Carolina's, and also in Canada. He was retired from Greene's Service Center as an electronic technician. He was an active member of the Abbeville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for many years.

Surviving are his daughters, Lilia Ostman of Hendersonville, N.C., and Linda Edwards of Spartanburg; a number of grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Abbeville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses by the Rev. Gene Clifton; burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The body is at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Kidd, 205West Pinkney St., Abbeville.

Memorials may be made to the Abbeville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 205 West Pinkney St., Abbeville, S.C. 29620.

'BILLY' POWELL

WEST UNION -- William Davis "Billy" Powell, 69, husband of Joan Lusk Powell, of 330 Country Junction Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his home.

Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Junice John and Bertie Orr Powell. He was a retired dairy farmer and a member of Welcome Wesleyan Church and the Unity Sunday school class. He was a member of the Ebenezer Community Club, Keowee Ebenezer Fire Department, South Carolina Farm Bureau board of director and former member of the South Carolina Dairyman's Association.

In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by his sister, Bobbie Powell Cannon of West Union.

He was preceded in death by one sister, June Powell.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Welcome Wesleyan Church; burial will be in Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davenport Funeral Home.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 390 Keowee School Road, Seneca, S.C. 29672, or to Welcome Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 1040 Ebenezer Road Seneca, S.C. 29672.

ALFRED E. MITCHELL

Jan. 2, 1944 -- Jan. 6, 2005

ANDERSON -- Alfred E. Mitchell, 61, of 100 Black Bass Road died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, he was a carpenter and attended Barnette's Grove Emmanuel Holiness Church in Anderson.

Surviving are widow, Sybil Cartee Mitchell of the home; son, Kenneth Alfred Mitchell of Starr; daughters, Tammy Hanks and Lisa M. Mitchell, both of Anderson; brother, Charles Edward Mitchell of Starr; and five grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Clarence Milford Mitchell and Willie Faye Alexander Mitchell. He was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Mitchell Simpson.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bob Hicks; burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The family will be at the home.

CORY ALLEN BELL

STARR -- Cory Allen Bell, 30, husband of Denise McAlister Bell, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.

He was the son of the late Eugene and Joan Mae Thomas Bell.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Katie Bell of the home; stepchildren, David and Daniel Standard, both of the home; and his brothers, Chris, Matt and Jerry Bell.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Unity Baptist Church, 105 Unity Church Road, Starr, S.C. 29684.

DAVID HAYNES

WARE SHOALS -- David Haynes, 74, of 5333 S.C. 252, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his home.

Born in Abbeville County, he was the son of the late Herman Lee and Alice Calvert Haynes. He was retired from Riegel Textile Corp. He was twice married, first to the late Mary W. Enoree Haynes and to the late Louise Honnicut Haynes.

Surviving are his sisters, Ruby Alewine of Belton and Patty Lollis of Honea Path.

Services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Parker-White Funeral Home by the Rev. Ron Culbertson; burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home of Ruby and Jerry Alewine, 200 Alewine Road, Belton.

DOROTHY CARNES GAMBRELL

SENECA -- Dorothy Carnes Gambrell, 85, of 330 Rocky Hill Drive died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Hartwell, Ga., on Dec. 10, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Bertha Gray Carnes. She was preceded in death by her husband William "Bill" Gambrell; one son, John Wayne Gambrell; two brothers, Reuben and Leon Carnes; and his sister, Macie Vickery.

She was the former owner and operator of Gambrell's Skating Rink and a member of Hepsibah Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Wilda Wright of Seneca; sister, Margaret Ruth Newton of Gray Court; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hepsibah Baptist Church with visitation one hour before the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home of Seneca is in charge of arrangements.
