THELMA RUTH COTHRAN TRAMMELL

August 16, 1922-November 21, 2005

ANDERSON -- Thelma Ruth Cothran Trammell, beloved wife of William V. Trammell for 56 years, departed this life to be with her Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ on November 21, 2005. This came after several years of declining health during which time she became an inspiration to both family and friends. Thelma was born August 16, 1922 in the Possum Kingdom community of Greenville County to the late Christie F. and Eunice Uldrick Cothran. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: daughter, Ramelle T. Coker (Devon) of Turbeville; sons, Steve and Mark of Anderson, and Andy (Lil) of Coto de Caza, CA; one brother, Floyd Andrew Cothran and wife Midge of Pelzer; two sisters-in-law, Sue and Sara Cothran of Williamston; eight grandchildren; three nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by two brothers, W. Frank Cothran and Christie F. Cothran, Jr. of Williamston; and one grandson, Matthew T. Zimmerman of Sumter, SC.

Mrs. Trammel grew up in Williamston where she graduated from Williamston High School. After that she attended Draughn Business College. She later enrolled in Anderson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received her RN in 1946. After pursuing post-graduate training in Galveston, TX, she returned to Anderson and assumed the position of Assistant Director of Nursing at Anderson Memorial Hospital where she remained until 1951. An astute businesswoman, she served as Secretary-Treasurer of Traco Steel Company and Trammell Design Service for more than 25 years.

A long time active member of First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, Mrs. Trammell was serving as Elder, one of the first women so honored, at the time of her death. She participated in the first class of Stephen Ministers and served as a mentor to many. She was also a former Sunday school teacher and coordinated the clothing ministry for many years.

Her outstanding leadership activities in the community were many and varied throughout her active life. A life-long animal lover she was instrumental in the founding of the Anderson County Humane Society and assisted in raising funds to build the County Animal Shelter.

She was active in both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and served as a pack and troop leader. She also worked with the Laubach Literacy Association, assisting adults in learning to read.

In politics she worked tirelessly as a volunteer in many campaigns and was rewarded by witnessing the election of all levels from county to state to nation. She was one of the founders of the Anderson County Republican Women's Club. Through her efforts the majority of precincts in the county became organized. She was a delegate many times to county, district, state and national conventions. She served on the Anderson County Election Commission and had a part in overseeing the change from paper ballots to the use of ballot machines in the county. In addition, she was a trained Parliamentarian and offered her expertise in this field on many occasions. She was the recipient of the Rufus Keyes Award as the Outstanding Republican in the county in 1999 for all of these worthy efforts.

In 2002, she, and her husband, were recognized by the Anderson County Council for their outstanding service to the Anderson community. Shortly before her illness, Mrs. Trammell became a volunteer at Hospice of the Upstate, giving a service from which she received much pleasure and reward.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005 from 6 to 8PM at McDougald Funeral Home, Main Street, Anderson, SC.

Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00PM on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005 by Dr. B.E. Pettit and Dr. Alan Elmore. Serving as Honorary Escort will be the Christian Endeavor Sunday School Class and members of the Session.
