JOANN MOORHEAD

ANDERSON - JoAnn Meredith Moorhead, 67, of 313 North Street, wife of Michael Guy Moorhead, died at home Friday, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Fair Play, she was a teacher, educator, and Level II Psychologist in Anderson District 5 for 14 years and Abbeville County for 17 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Anderson. Before her illness, she was very active in the community and church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are daughters, Alison Phillips and husband John of Abbeville, Ann Marie Armstrong of Anderson; sister, Carolyn Todd and husband Ben of Loris; grandchildren, Madeline Phillips and Travis O'Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Hughes Meredith and her brother, Bob Meredith.

A memorial service will be held at 4 PM Sunday, June 18 at First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. James R. Thomason and Danny Shaw. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 PM at the church. The family is at the residence.

KENNETH GARRY RICE

July 25, 1959 - June 15, 2006

EASTANOLLEE - Mr. Kenneth Garry Rice, age 46, of Hwy 145 Eastanollee, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at Emory University Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born July 25, 1959 in Stephens County and was a member of Hill Street Baptist Church. Mr. Rice was a Pilot for Ernie Elliott, Inc. in Dawsonville and was a former pilot for Coats & Clark.

Survivors include his parents, Ronnie and Jean Wilson Rice of Toccoa; a son, Kenneth Garry Rice II of Toccoa; a daughter, Hannah Joy Rice of Toccoa; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David Wayne and Becky Rice and Michael Glenn and Hilde Rice, all of Toccoa; and three nieces.

Funeral services will be held at three o'clock Saturday from the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Jerrell Beatty and Rev. Aubrey McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home of his parents on Brookdale Road and received friends at the mortuary from 7 until 9 pm Friday. Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

MR. "PETE" BRYANT

Dec. 18, 1926 - June 16, 2006

ANDERSON, SC - Mr. William Burriss Bryant, age 79 of 410 Galloping Ghost Road, husband of Louise Bass Bryant, died Friday, June 16, 2006 at the AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

Born in Anderson, SC on December 18, 1926, Mr. Bryant was a son of the late Charlie Burriss Bryant and Jessie Roland Bryant. He was retired from Anderson Mill and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Bass Bryant of the home; sons, Carlton Lee Bryant of Anderson, William Larry Bryant and his wife Cynthia of Anderson, William Burriss Bryant, Jr., and his wife, Frances of Elberton, GA and Ray Allen Bryant of Anderson; daughters, Sylvia Joan Bowen of Anderson, Jessie Joyce Dale of Ware Shoals, SC, Ruby Lucille Whitworth and her husband, Charles of Anderson and Mary Frances Bowen and her husband, Michael of Anderson; brothers, Alvin Bryant; sister, Mary Frances Bryant, both of Anderson; twenty-five grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Donnie Ray Bryant and Jimmy Garland Bryant.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 17, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

ANDERSON - Wallace Floyd Martin, 60, of 503 Montague St., died on June 15, 2006 at NHC.

Born in Abbeville County, he was the son of the late Eddie and Sadie Benson Martin.

He is survived by his sisters, Margaret (Wardell) McDowell of Anderson, SC, Hattie (William Lee) Paul of Iva, SC, and Sadie (John) William of Jacksonville, FL; brothers, Eddie E. (Elease) Martin of Leveland, SC and Leroy (Amanda) Martin of Greenwood, SC.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Edna Kay, Alice R. Martin and Angel Martin; brothers, John, Willie JP, and Fred Martin.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 3:00PM at Flat Rock AME Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Archer Dickson

ANDERSON - Archer Dickson, 87, of Summit Place, died Saturday, August 19, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born July 4, 1919 in Anderson, he attended Georgia Military Academy and was a graduate of The University of Georgia. He was a retired insurance agent and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving is a sister, Caroline D. Smith of Anderson. He was the son of the late J. Walter Dickson, Sr. and Nell Archer Dickson and was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Ripley and a brother, Dr. James Walter Dickson, Jr. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Old Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Dr. Dennis R. WALHALLA, SC - Charles Fredrick Muller, 94, husband of the late Jessie Kerr Muller, of 125 Laverne Lane, Walhalla, SC, died Saturday, August 19, 2006. A native of Columbia, SC, Mr. Muller was the son of the late Louis and Marie Meldeau Muller. He was a retired employee of Clemson University and a member of Turning Point Church of God. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Muller was predeceased by four brothers: Lloyd Muller, Frank Muller, Harold Muller and Robert Muller; and a sister: Emma Reynolds. BELTON - Charles Delmas Campbell, 76, widower of the late Katherine Campbell of 431 Bill Kay Rd. died Saturday, August 19, 2006 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Greenville County he was the son of the late Charlie and Iva Dell Kirby Campbell. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church where he was a life long Deacon and Sunday School Superintendant for 26 years; He was a former member of Columbia Baptist Church. He was a retired manager from the S. C. Farm Bureau grain marketing division. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korea War and a member of the American Legion Post 51. Surviving are: son, Bryan Campbell and wife Wendy of Honea Path; grandchildren, Matthew Campbell, Andrew Campbell, and Kelly Campbell; sister, Mary Agnes Dixon of Greenville. He was predeceased by: sister, Flora Lee Ridgeway; and brother, George Edwin Campbell. Services will be held 3:00pm Tuesday at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Carroll Plemmons officiating. Burial will follow at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6pm until 9pm Monday at Cox Funeral Home. Janie Mae McDowell McCombs

Janie Mae 'MaMae' McDowell McCombs, 95, entered eternal rest on August 19 at Hospice of the Upstate. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Calvin McCombs, Sr., and an infant son, Wallace Milford. Born in Saluda County on January 8, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Walter Isaac and Mae Redonna Parkman McDowell. Also preceding her in death were brothers Melvin, J.B., Bernice and Herman and sisters Emily McDowell, Ruby Smith, Viola Brewer and Carolyn Reardon. Mrs. McCombs was a former resident of Greenwood and Belton. For the past six years she resided at The Garden House in Anderson. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Belton Penecostal Holiness Church where for many years she taught an adult Sunday School class and was active with the Women's Ministry. A loving and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, she is survived by children Carol Anderson and her husband Sam of Pendleton (Sandy Springs), Jane of Tucker, GA, Calvin and his wife Lynne of Lexington, VA, Wayne and his wife Ann of Clemmons, NC, and Walter of Lexington, KY. She is also survived by grandchildren Will McCombs and his wife Emilie of Isle of Palms, SC, Layne Kipp and her husband David of Hartsville, SC, Elizabeth McCombs of Winston-Salem, NC, Lydia McCombs of Clemmons, NC, Joel McCombs of Boone, NC, Crystal Martin and her husband Jimmy of Anderson, Emily Norris and her husband Josh of Anderson, Nathaniel McCombs of Lexington, KY, step grandchildren Debbie Culwell and her husband Jimmy of Anderson and Sam Anderson, Jr., of Belton Great-grandchildren are Bailey Pittillo, Walker Martin, Hunter Norris, Caleb Norris, Jacob McCombs, Bennett McCombs, Calvin McCombs IV, Vivian Kipp and step great-grandchildren Johnny Culwell and Emmylou Anderson Two brothers, Royce McDowell and his wife, Myrtle, and Bernard McDowell and his wife, Sophie, all of Ninety Six, SC, also survive her along with numerous nieces and nephews. HONEA PATH - Mary Savannah Callaham Whitt, 87, formerly of 124 Maryland Ave., widow of Abner John (A.J.) Whitt, died Saturday, August 19,2006 at Ellenburg Nursing Home in Anderson. Born in Honea Path, she was a daughter of the late Parker and Lillie Campbell Whitt. She was a member of the Honea Path Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was retired from Milliken Mfg. Co. Surviving are two sons, Mike Whitt of Honea Path and Dennis Whitt of Anderson, one daughter, Ann Burrell of Greenville, one brother, Clarence Callaham of Williamston, two sisters, Hazel Brock of Honea Path and Louise McCoy of Lavonia, Ga., 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Peggy Blakely. Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Tuesday at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Ray Lollis and Rev. Rickey Knight officiating. Ralph Chastain

May 16, 1920 - August 19, 2006

ANDERSON, SC - Ralph Chastain, age 86, husband of Frances Teasley Chastain, of Anderson, SC, died Saturday, August 19, 2006, at Hospice of the Upstate, Anderson. Born in Anderson County, on May 16, 1920, Mr. Chastain was the son of John Frank Chastain and Minnie Hanks Chastain. Before retiring in 1982, Ralph was employed for 41 years as a textile worker with J. P. Stevens Appleton Plant. He was a long-time member of Union Grove United Methodist Church and attended Oakwood Baptist Church. Ralph was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His true passion was quail hunting. Through the years, he bagged thousands of quail with the help of his many loyal hunting dogs and his 1961 Browning 12-gauge shotgun. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Teasley Chastain. Ralph, a loving and generous father and grandfather, is also survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeane and Jimmy Moore, Springfield, Virginia, and Judy and Russell Myrick, Greenwood, SC; five grandchildren and their spouses, Laurie and David Nuttle, Westerville, Ohio; Mark and Cheryl Moore, Watkinsville, Georgia; Chris and Tammy Moore, Newnan, Georgia; Adam and Julie Myrick, Lexington, SC; and Susan and Greg Hendrix, Greenville, SC; ten great-grandchildren, Alex, Ansley, Kerrigan, Courtney, Caitlyn, Dillon, Carley, Matthew, Caroline and Brady; two sisters, Thelma Gambrell, Taylors, SC; and Macy Barnett, Stone Mountain, Georgia; several nieces and nephews and many special neighbors and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Wade, Guy, Gus and Joe and four sisters, Madge McClain, Clara Chastain, Louise Phillips and Nellie Campbell. ANDERSON, SC - Ryan Nicholas Cox, age 24, of Anderson, SC, husband of Ixa Mendoza Cox, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 17, 2006, in Anderson, SC. Born on April 14, 1982, Ryan was the son of Drake Cox and Jackie Jones. He graduated in 2000 from West Valley Central School in West Valley, NY, as a varsity letter winner in football and track. He was employed at several local restaurants; was an avid cook and enjoyed what he did. Ryan enjoyed art; was very talented and was pursuing a career in dermagraphics. He loved his family and was always a rock to the foundation on which it stood. He would always give you 110% and leave you with a smile. He always gave a shoulder to cry on; gave you the truth with his head always on the level. Ryan was a friend to all whose lives he touched and he will always be loved, remembered and cherished. He is survived by his wife, Ixa Mendoza Cox; children, Mason Imir Cox, age 2 and Jonathon Jace Cox, newborn; father, Drake Cox and his wife Pamela; mother, Jackie Jones; siblings, Joshua Michael Cox, Sara Elizabeth King and spouse Michael Jared King; half sisters, ShannaAnn Marie Cox and Alex Victoria Jean Cox; nephew Brandon Michael King and grandparents, Harold and A. He was born November 28, 1977 to Derrill Allen & Gail Smith Bibb. He is a 1996 graduate of West-Oak High School & a 2006 Clemson University graduate with a mechanical engineering degree. He was employed at Timken as a mechanical engineer in Walhalla, SC. He is survived by his parents of the home and many friends. ANDERSON - Charles Earle Patterson, age 70, of 512 Williamston Rd., Anderson, died October 8, 2006 at his residence. Born April 25, 1936, son of the late Sylvester M. Patterson and the late Mae Woodall Patterson. Survivors: 2 sons, Steve Turner of Anderson, Mark Patterson of Anderson; and 2 daughters, Patricia Patterson of Anderson, Mary E. Cole of Anderson, Sharon D. Brown of Anderson; 18 grandchildren. Memorial service: 2p.m., Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 3219 S. Main St., Anderson, SC.

DAN CLINE

ATLANTA - Dan Cline, born Dec 16, 1933, died October 9, 2006 after a long illness. He is survived by his son, Matthew Cline of Anderson, SC; daughter, Rebecca Cline Backfisch of Lilburn; and grandchildren, William and Thomas Cline and Nicholas and Alexandra Backfisch; brother, George Cline of Toccoa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Kelley Cline, originally of Portland, ME. Daniel Cline grew up in Toccoa, GA, as the 8th child of Dr. A. T. Cline and Ruth Myers Cline. He graduated magna cum laude from Mercer University with a degree in Physics and obtained his Masters in Physics from Clemson University. He served as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During his working life, he was employed by Martin Corporation as a systems analyst and with IHC Holland-LeTourneau of Longview, TX as an engineer. He found his greatest fulfillment, however, as a high school math and science teacher at Cross Keys High School in Atlanta, GA, from which he retired in 1994. His hobbies included gardening, carpentry, and reading. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 13 at 10:30a.m. at Oglethorpe Hill Chapel with Dr. James Coldiron officiating. Interment will be at 3 pm at Roselane Cemetery, Toccoa, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Anderson Free Clinic, 414 North Fant Street, Anderson, SC 29621, or to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. SENECA - Deacon J.D. Benson (Harmonica Player), 83, of 916 Williams Street, Seneca, SC, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at the Oconee Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Bessie Bell Davis Benson. He was born March 3, 1923 in South Union, SC, to the late Sophia Benson and Belton Walker. He was a member of Tugaloo Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacon board, a member of the Brotherhood, WMWA, Young At Heart Club, Masonic Lodge #204, and Prayer Band. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Plant, Seneca, SC. He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Patricia Ann Thompson of the home; one son, Odell William Benson of Seneca, SC; two sisters, Brenda Henderson of South Union and Diane Walker of Alabama; five brothers, Sherry Walker of Martin, GA, Warren Walker of New York, Lendwood Walker, Scuddy Walker both of South Union, SC and Malcolm Walker of Seneca, SC; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a special brother, Jerome Jones; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Henry Clay Benson; one sister, Ann Ruth Robinson; and six brothers. Funeral service for Deacon Benson will be held Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 4:00PM at the Seneca Institute Family Life Center with burial in the Tugaloo Baptist Church Cemetery.
