ELVIN BUCKNER

DALZELL - Elvin Buckner, 78, husband of Judy Lillian Benenhaley Buckner, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Samuel L. Buckner and Sally Ann Benenhaley Buckner.

Mr. Buckner was a member of Springbank Baptist Church and was retired from the U.S. Air Force, retired from civil service and was a retired long - distance truck driver. He was an avid bass fisherman.

Surviving are his wife of Dalzell; three sons, Steve R. Buckner, Mark Buckner and Joey A. Buckner, all of Sumter; four daughters, Gussie M. Britnell of Alaska, Helen V. Bartlette of Sumter, Ann Dutily of Phoenix and Betty L. Hamrick of Dalzell; one sister, Betty C. Buckner of Sumter; two brothers, Lynn Benenhaley of Sumter and Bobby Benenhaley of Aiken; two sisters, Kathy Marinko and Jessie Lee Benenhaley, both of Sumter; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great - grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Edwards and Dr. Robert L. Alderman officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery will full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. today at the Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Springbank Baptist Church.

Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

GREGORY L. HOUSTON

Gregory Leonard Houston, 48, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Atlanta.

Born August 3, 1955, in Sumter, he was a son of Eartha Houston Carroway.

At an early age, he joined the Union Station AME Church, where he was active with the Boy Scouts, Sunday school and choir. He was a 1974 graduate of Sumter High School. After graduation, he attended Central Carolina Technical College, where he served as treasurer of the student body and received an associate's degree in accounting. He later worked as a restaurant manager for a number of years and later became a salesman for a vending machine company and was recognized as one of the top salesmen. He later relocated to Atlanta, where he continued to work in sales and became partner of an antiques business.

Survivors include a sister, Sharon Carroway - Housey (Brock) of Ft. Knox, Ky.; two brothers, Robert Carroway and Tommy Houston, both of Sumter; two aunts, Sarah Naomi Littles of Sumter an Ruth Davis of Newark, N.J.; one nephew, Derrick Boyd of Orangeburg; two grand aunts, Rosalee Richardson of Sumter and Naomi Richardson of New York City; a very special cousin and beast friend, Roland Heyward of Atlanta; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty officiating.

The body will lie in state 2 p.m. today.

Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, 28 Harrison St.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DANIEL STINNEY

NEW YORK CITY - Daniel Stinney, 60, widower of the late Eltonia Powers, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in New York City.

Born Oct. 4, 1943, in Summerton, he was a son of the late David and Annie Mae Williams Stinney.

Survivors include a stepmother, Christine Stinney of Florence, four sons, three brothers, five sisters, two stepsisters and two stepbrothers. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Taw Caw Baptist Church, the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

TYRONE THOMPSON

Tyrone Thompson, 27, husband of Melissa Dinkins Thompson, died Nov. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1976, in Sumter, he was a son of Lander Fox Rock and Mary Lee Thompson.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Mary Lee Thompson, 415 Park Homes Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc.

RONALD J. CAMPBELL Sr.

Ronald (Ron) John Campbell Sr., 69, husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Tucker Campbell, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Aruba, West Indies, he was a son of the late Lee Campbell and Catherine Gibson Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364 A.F.M. He was a former pavement engineer at Shaw Air Force Base after 30 years of service and was currently the owner and operator of Campbell Paving Specialties Inc. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, Ronald John (Johnny) Campbell Jr. and wife, Pam, of Sumter; one daughter, Donna Campbell Prothro and husband, William, of Manning; one brother, Lee Campbell of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister, Sara Simpkins of Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren, William Stroman (Stro) Prothro, Evan Campbell Prothro, McKenzie Marshall Prothro, John Lee Campbell and Caroline Sanchez Campbell.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Dr. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Pallbearers will be Doug Hammond, Chuck Stokes, Ben Abbott, Robert Rumph, Al Hubbard, Freddy Edmunds and Pat Joyner.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

GORDON JONES

Mr. Gordon Jones, 53, of 1573 Pinewood Road, died Nov. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 16, 1950, a son of Mrs. Mary Tindal Jones and the late Mr. John M. Jones. He attended the public schools in New York City. At an early age, he became a born again Christian.

Survivors in addition to his mother, Mary Tindal Jones of the home, include six sons, Gordon Jones Jr., Brian Jones, David Jones, Ricardo Jones and Issac Jones, all of New York City, and Stefan Jones of Sumter; one daughter, Veronica Jones of New York City; two sisters, Carolyn Butler and her husband, William, of Sumter, and Terry Williams and her husband, Gilbert, of Augusta, Ga.; and a host of grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, France Jones Pierson.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Enterprise, Sumter, with the Rev. Stanley Haynes officiating and assisted by the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial will follow in the Haynesworth cemetery.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BETTE SEASTRUNK

IRMO - Memorial service for Virginia DuRant "Bette" Seastrunk, 59, will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Irmo.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Rolling Readers, 2728 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Seastrunk died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003. Born in Goldsboro, N.C., and raised in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Eugene DuRant and Virginia Parrott DuRant. She was a retired school teacher with Lexington School District 5, served as a board member of Rolling Readers, and member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, John "Trunky" Seastrunk; son, Dr. Thomas Gordon Seastrunk of Irmo; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Daniel Gilbert of Andrews, N.C., and Ashley and Terry Buchmann of Irmo; brothers and sisters-in-law, William Eugene and Caroline DuRant of Sumter and Dr. Perry Walker and Peggy DuRant of Beaufort; sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Robert Kirby of Pawleys Island; and grandchildren, Jacob and Elizabeth Gilbert, Garrett and Thomas Buchmann.

FRANK PINKNEY

Frank Pinkney, 66, husband of Mary Stuckey - Pinkney, died Nov. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 4, 1937, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Fred Pinkney and Virginia Pinkney - Goings. He received his formal education from Lincoln High School and enlisted into the United States Navy thereafter. Upon his release from the Navy, he relocated to New York City in search of a better life. He married Mary Nelson - Pinkney, who preceded him in death in 1988. Frank was a longtime member of the Goodwill Baptist Church in the Bronx, N.Y. He was employed by the Hess Oil Corp. and, after 25 years of service, retired in 1995. Wanting no more of big city life, he relocated back to Sumter in 1998. Upon his return to Sumter, he became a member of the Jehovah Witness organization.

Survivors include four brothers, Cleveland and Harmon Pinkney Sr., both of Sumter, David Goings of Columbia and Herbert Glover of Rembert; one sister, Shirley Pinkney - Hunter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two aunts, Essiemae Grant and Ethel Johnson Spann; one uncle, James Johnson, all of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Goings and Charles Pinkney Sr.

A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 100 Lynam Road, Sumter, with Mercedes Pinkney - Johnson officiating, assisted by Pastor Delma L. Pinkney - Smith of Upper Room Pentecostal Holiness Temple and evangelist Carlotta (Pat) Pinkney.

Burial will be Friday in the Florence National cemetery, 803 E. National cemetery Road, Florence.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from his home, 1150 Meadow Croft Drive, Sumter.

ANNIE M. McDONALD

BISHOPVILLE - Mrs. Annie M. McDonald, widow of Mr. Jesse McDonald, died Nov. 3, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

She was born in Lee County.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 143 Hansel St., Bishopville.

Services will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home of Bishopville.

WILLIAM JOHNSON

MANNING - William "Cry" Johnson, 69, died Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 4, 1934, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late William Johnson Sr. and Bertha English Samuel.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Frank Samuel, 1467 Cooter Creek Road, Alcolu.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
