GEORGE W. WRIGHT I

George Willie Wright I, 48, husband of Heremineo "Penny" S. Wright, died Oct. 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 10, 1955, in Sumter, he was a son of Allie Mae Williams Wright and the late Frankie Wright. He was named in honor of his grandfather, the Rev. Willie Wright. He spent his formative years matriculating at Liberty Street Elementary and Sumter High School. He graduated from Sumter High School in 1973. Upon graduation, he received a certified welding degree from Sumter Area Tech. He was employed as a welder in Bridgeport, Conn., before returning to South Carolina. In 1975, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his tour of duty, he was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., Fort Lee, Va., Fort Sill, Okla., Korea, Somalia, Fort Bragg, N.C., and Germany. After 20 years of service to his country, he retired as a sergeant first class/E - 7.

Survivors besides his wife of 22 years and his mother include one son, George Willie Wright II of Sumter; three sisters, Martha (Ralph) Wright Council of Trumbull, Conn., Frankie (Jesse) Wilson of Dalzell and twin sister Georgette Wright - Cook of Columbia; one brother, Frank William Wright of Sumter; mother-in-law, Sallie Sims of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Larry (Mary) Fullard of Sumter and Lester Sims of St. Simons Island; six sisters-in-law, Marjorie Sims, Rebecca (Ricardo) Robinson, Betty L. Sims, Rochelle Sims of Sumter, Sandra Sims of Greenville and Joan Richardson of Baltimore; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Rev. Dr. W.S. Randolph, pastor, and Bishop Sammy C. Smith officiating, assisted by the Revs. Drucilla Harvin and James Jackson.

Burial will be in National cemetery, Florence.

The body will lie in state at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1017 Dover Circle, Sumter.

WILLIAM H. LeROUX

William H. LeRoux, 69, husband of Janis LeRoux, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at his home.

Services will be announced by Elmore - Cannon - Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

ABRAHAM SINKLER

Abraham Sinkler, 99, widower of Charlotte Hector Sinkler, died Nov. 4, 2003, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter - East.

Born Aug. 24, 1904, in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Parrish Sinkler and Sophia Mitchell Sinkler.

The family will receive friends at his home, 510 Jones St., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

HERBERT E. MEYER

Herbert E. Meyer, 81, widower of Henrietta DuBose Meyer, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at his home.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., he was a son of the late Ernest Meyer and the late Helen Comfort Meyer.

Mr. Meyer was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364, an honorary member of Hillcrest Lodge No. 397 and an honorary member of Claremont Lodge No. 64. He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies, past high priest, past illustrious master and a past eminent commander. He was a member of the Palmetto No. 54 K.Y.C.H., the Palmetto No. 70 York Rite College and the Sumter No. 188 Allied Masonic Degrees. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired from Georgia Pacific.

Surviving are a son, Carl H. Meyer of Manning; a daughter, Pamela E. Meyer of Sumter; two grandchildren, Carl H. Meyer Jr. of Manning and Stacey M. Gant and her husband, Steve, of Sumter; two great - grandchildren, Ashton and Gabrielle Gant; and two special friends, Elsie Winebarger and Larry Holloman.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Painter officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364.

Honorary pallbearers will be C.W. Ard, Rodger Bishop, Frank Barger and members of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. at the Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 107 Laverne St.

Memorials may be made to the Scottish Rite Bodies, to the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364 or Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore - Hill - McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

RUFUS BLACKWELL

Rufus Blackwell, 92, husband of Susan Dupree Blackwell of the home, died Oct. 31, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born May 9, 1911, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John and Maggie Tomlin Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell was raised as a child in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he attended with his family. He later received Christ at the Greenhill Baptist Church in Clarendon County. After relocating to Sumter, he joined the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for most of his life. He attended school in Clarendon County. For many years, he was employed by the Shaw Lumber Co. and later with the Avery Lumber Co., where he retired after many years of service. Mr. Blackwell enjoyed the outdoors and would walk and ride his bicycle all around Sumter. He was especially devoted to his dog, Tiny, who he walked every day. He and Tiny would go wherever they wanted to go. He was a quiet, unassuming man who was deeply devoted to his wife, Susan, whom he married on Sept. 9, 1993.

He leaves to cherish precious memories his loving wife, Susan Dupree Blackwell of the home; two daughters, Edith (Frank) Davis of Fort Worth, Texas, and Carolyn (Leon) Pitts of Columbia; five sons, Willie (Doris) Dupree and Joshua (Bessie) Dupree, both of Sumter; Isiah (Carmen) Dupree of Silver Spring, Md., Gary Dupree of Alexandria, Va., and Gregory (Monica) Dupree of Charlotte, N.C.; a caring niece, Betty Miller of Sumter; 29 grandchildren; 41 great - grandchildren; 23 great - great - grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. T.O. Everett, pastor, and the Rev. Lamont Newsome officiating, assisted by Elder Willie Dupree, the Rev. Juenarrl Keith and the Rev. Joshua Dupree.

Burial will be in Westminster Presbyterian cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from the residence, 210 W. Bartlette St.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 210 W. Bartlette St.

JOHN E. THAMES

SUMMERTON - John E. "Billie" Thames, 70, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Johnnie Thames and Janie Levy Thames.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Sue E. Sabb, 1045 Festival Road, Summerton.

Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

SUMMERTON - John E. "Billie" Thames, 70, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Johnnie Thames and Janie Levy Thames. In his youth, he attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. In later years, he moved to Miami, where he was employed by Fountain Beau Hotel and Restaurant as a short order cook for several years. After returning back to South Carolina, he worked for several construction firms.

Survivors include three brothers, George (Mivens) Thames of Summerton, Leon (Argenell) Thames of White Plains, N.Y., and Roosevelt Thames of Lake City; three sisters, Sue E. Sabb of the home, Roberta Lawson and Willene (Curtis) Wright, all of Summerton; and Sarah Pearson, a devoted niece.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Crossroad community, Summerton, with the Rev. David Lawson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Calvin Jackson and Minister Johnnie L. Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the home of his sister, Sue E. Sabb, 1045 Festival Road, Summerton.

WILLIAM JOHNSON

MANNING - William "Cry" Johnson, 69, died Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 4, 1934, in the Cypress Fork community, Alcolu, he was a son of the late William Johnson Sr. and Bertha English Samuel and stepson of the late Frank Samuel Sr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. In his youth, he attended Cypress Fork AME Church, and he was a veteran in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sons, Wendell Johnson and Keith Johnson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Porsche Renee Johnson, Tai Amber Johnson and Akil Johnson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Frank Samuel Jr. of Alcolu and Albert Johnson of Boston; one sister, Flora S. (Lucious) Green of Alcolu; three aunts, Ada Fleming of Lake City, Minnie Lee Samuel and Bertha Giles, both of Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. W.J. Frierson officiating. Burial will be in Manning cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Frank Samuel Jr., 1467 Cooter Creek Road, Alcolu.

HERMAN REMBERT Jr.

Pastor Herman Rembert Jr., 53, husband of Betty Sue Rembert, died Nov. 6, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 3, 1950, in Sumter County, he was a son of Herman Rembert Sr. and Elizabeth Vaughn Rembert.

The family will receive friends at his home, 640 W. Liberty St., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

GENEVA L. DOW

BISHOPVILLE - Geneva Luckey Dow, 52, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1951, she was a daughter of the late Willie M. Thomas.

She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1970.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Pentecostal Holiness Church in Elliott.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 19 Trio Circle in Elliott.

JESSIE B. CLARK

Jessie Brunson Clark, 96, widow of William Clark Sr., died Nov. 3, 2003, at National Healthcare Center.

Born June 3, 1907, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Jess and Maggie Morgan Brunson. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County and was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah UM Church, Mayesville, where she served faithfully on the senior choir, stewardess board and as a member of the United Methodist Women Organization. She was also the "mother of the church."

Survivors include eight daughters, Naomi James, Sadie M. Witherspoon, Dora (Freddie) Miller, Anabell (Eugene) Rhodes, Shirley (Edward) Allen, all of Sumter, Mary (Joseph) Robinson of West Palm Beach, Fla., Vivian Nettles of Detroit, and Minister Gloria (Charles) Blanchard of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one brother, Charlie (Maggie) Brunson of Sumter; 25 grandchildren; 53 great - grandchildren; 27 great - great - grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three children, Robert Clark, William Clark Jr. and Ruth Clark; five brothers, James Brunson, Tommie Brunson, Eugene (Sweet) Brunson, Haskell Brunson and Lewis Maude' Brunson; three sisters, Mahaley Brunson Benjamin, Gardinia Brunson and Maggie Brunson Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas Jr., assisted by the Revs. M. Walters, L. Winn and Minister C. Blanchard. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church cemetery.

The body will lie in state at noon Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Sadie Witherspoon, 8 Dew Drive, Sumter 29153.
