BISHOPVILLE - Mrs. Christine Rembert, widow of Mr. Edgar "Buster" Rembert, died Nov. 12, 2003, at the residence, 523 Bradley Road, Elliott.

The family will receive friends at 523 Bradley Road, Elliott.

Services will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home of Bishopville.

LOUISE B. LEWIS

NORTH CHARLESTON - Louise Britt Lewis, wife of Johnny Lewis, died Nov. 8, 2003.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, David Britt and Johnny Walters; six grandchildren, Lavona Mitchell, Dametria Mitchell, David Britt, Yolanda Woodberry, Tammy Walton and Christy Walton; two sisters, Virdeena Dawkins of Sumter and Ollie Snyder of Paterson, N.J.; one brother, Nathaniel Britt of Paterson, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with family hour from 7 to 8 p.m. at North Area Funeral Home, 4784 Gaynor Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evening of Prayer Church of God in Christ, 2361 Spruill Ave., North Charleston.

PHILLIP L. WRIGHT

Phillip Leon Wright, husband of Jean Wright, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in Queens, N.Y.

Born Feb. 6, 1954, in Sumter, he was a son of Eva Burns Wright and the late Nathan Wright.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at West End Tabernacle CME Church, 265 Colorado Ave., Bridgeport, Conn., with the Rev. Frederick Belcher, pastor, and the Rev. Earthalee Reed officiating.

The Betty Lourde Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES F. GOODMAN

Mr. James Frank Goodman, 80, of Lynchburg, died on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, after an illness.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Jack Goodman and Alice Chandler Goodman. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Golden Gate Lodge No. 78 and retired from the Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Sumter in 1989.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Mrs. Mae Bell Evans Goodman of the home; two sons, Charles (Carrie) Goodman and Steven (Sandra) Goodman, all of Sumter; six daughters, Gloria Gamble of New Jersey, Peggie (Louis) Kennedy of New York, Frankie (Marvin) Sanders of Sumter, Marelene (Jimmy) Lowery of Lynchburg, Sandra (Harlen) Smith of Ohio and Mary Anderson of Maryland; three sisters, Mary Alice Jefferson and Annie L. Perkins, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Stella Wooten of Maryland; one brother, Charlie (Mildred) Goodman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; 25 great - grandchildren; one uncle, Leroy Miller of Lynchburg.

One son, Theadore Goodman; one brother, Ervin Goodman; and one grandchild, Scott Sanders, preceded Mr. Goodman in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. James R. Cannion, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Goodman cemetery.

Masonic rites will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. today.

Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS L. PITTMAN

SUMMERTON - Thomas Lee Pittman, 79, husband of Mary Schroder Pittman, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 12, 2003, at his home in Summerton.

Born June 9, 1924, in Nashville, Ga., he was a son of the late Perry and Annie Jewel Fountain Pittman. He was a retired real estate broker and a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in Iwo Jima. He was a Mason and Shriner and life member of Sertoma International in Titusville, Fla., and was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a daughter, Marianne and husband, Joe, Shaw of McClellanville; a son, Tommy Stewart Pittman of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, John Wesley Pittman of Emmett, Idaho; half - sister, Glenda Faye Morgan of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepsister; two stepbrothers; three grandchildren; one great - grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lake Marion Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.

JAMES DAVIS

James Davis, husband of Ora Ellen Frazier Davis, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at his residence in Sumter.

Born in St. Stephens, Berkeley County, on May 8, 1913, he was the seventh of eight children born to the late Benjamin and Rebecca Murphy Davis.

He was formerly employed by the Sanford Jackson Construction Co. in Baltimore and retired in 1973. He relocated to Sumter in that same year and became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, four brothers and one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ora Davis of the home; his children, Rose Randall of Chicago, Brenda Carter and Virginia Frazier, both of Baltimore, Jimmie Ludd, James E. Davis and Stanley Davis, all of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great - grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Palmer Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Davis, 540 West Hampton Manor, Apartment No. 1, Sumter.

QUEEN ESTER WRIGHT

Queen Ester "Tootsie" Wright, 62, widow of Daniel Wright, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 7, 1941, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Charlotte Lawson King. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was formerly employed by parks and recreation. She was a former member of Salem Baptist Church, where she joined at an early age.

Survivors include one son, Jerome King of the home; two brothers, Rubin (Mattie Mae) King of Buffalo, N.Y., and Larry (Jacqueline) June of Sumter; one sister, Sarah King Abernathy of Buffalo, N.Y.; and nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Henry King and Raymond King; and two aunts, Camelia Blair and Alnethis K. Lighting.

The remains will be placed in the church from noon until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Marion Newton, assisted by Pastor Ricky Simmons. Burial will be in Bradford cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 12:35 p.m. from the home of 510 Knightridge Road.

The family will receive friends at the home, 510 Knightridge Road.

BERTHA H. STRICKLAND

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Bertha Hinson Strickland, 94, will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Blaney Baptist Church, Elgin, with burial to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Garden, Columbia. Dr. E.C. Watson and the Rev. Terry Strickland will be officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Connie Maxwell Children's Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648, or to Bethea Retirement Center, P.O. Drawer 4000, Florence, SC 29532.

Mrs. Strickland, widow of Carl Julian Strickland, and resident of Bethea Baptist Retirement Home Darlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, she was the daughter of the late Edward G. and Rhett Ross Hinson. She was retired as sewing room supervisor from the Connie Maxwell Children's Home after 21 years of service and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy and her husband, Lem Wooten, of Elgin; sons, Ray and his wife, Madge, of Manning, Afon and his wife, Van, of Blythewood and Tim and his wife, Jeanie, of Denver, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 32 great - grandchildren; eight great - great - grandchildren; sister, Leila Mae Ross of Elgin; brother, Herbert Martin of Topeka, Kan.

She was predeceased by a son, Carroll Beecher Strickland; sisters, Marie Martin, Aida Keith and Edna McQueen; and brothers, Ernest M. Hinson, Clinton Hinton, Buck (Ed) Hinson and David Roberts.

EDITH H. PLEASANT

Edith H. Pleasant, 86, died Nov. 7, 2003, at Somerset Medical Center.

She was born in Darlington. She was an elementary school teacher in the Cranford School System for 24 years before retiring in 1984. Previously she had taught music and was a school choir director at Lincoln High School, Sumter. She was an organist, pianist and choir director for several churches. A graduate of Morris College in Sumter, she earned a master's degree in special education from Newark State Teachers College in Union. She lived in Sumter and East Orange for 40 years before moving to Greenbrook three years ago.

Survivors include three daughters, Velda Glover, Gertrude Spann and Donna Soarles; one son, William; one brother, Alfred Humbert; 14 grandchildren; 27 great - grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Private services were held Wednesday.

WILLIE HOLMES Sr.

BISHOPVILLE - Mr. Willie Holmes Sr., of 2741 Woodrow Road, Sumter County, widower of Mrs. Lillie Mae Holmes, died Nov. 14, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

He was born in Sumter County.

The family will receive friends at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Willie "Bruce" Holmes Jr., 1107 West Lynches River Road, Lamar.

Services will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home of Bishopville.

THOMAS M. HALL

BISHOPVILLE - Thomas M. Hall, 57, husband of Helen S. Hall, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Lula Mae West Hall and the late William Hall.

He was a self - employed general contractor.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include two stepsons, Randal Bird of Bishopville and Cecil L. Evans and his wife, Robin, of Moncks Corner; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at his home, 1040 Woodrow Road, Bishopville, with Harold Hancock officiating.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the home.

Memorials may be made to the family of Thomas Hall, P.O. Box 501, Bishopville, SC 29010.
