Mrs. Johnson, widow of Corbett Johnson, died Thursday, October 2, 2003. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Fannie Smothers Caddell. Mrs. Johnson worked for Hartsville Cotton Mill for 17 years. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist church Building Fund.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Lavern and Shirley Johnson of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Alice J. and William Hubbard of Darlington, SC, Sheila J. and Charles Jackson of Bishopville, SC; four grandchildren, Tammy Gainey, Billy Hubbard, Jr., Andy Hubbard, and Mendy Johnson; seven great grandchildren, Blake Gainey, Brittany Gainey, Alexis Hubbard, Ashley Hubbard, Allison Hubbard, Allen Johnson and Daniel Johnson.

Mrs. Hughes, widow of Robert W. Hughes, died Thursday, November 27, 2003. She was born in Lee Co., SC. She met her husband in Hartsville and they were married for 55 years until his death in 1999. She had a long career as a beautician and was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She and her husband moved to Surfside Beach in 1998.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Hughes and Ken Hughes, both of Surfside Beach, SC, Windy and Mary Hughes of Clemson, SC; granddaughter, Christine Virginia Hughes of Clemson, SC; nephew, Johnny Grantham of Hartsville, SC. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Grantham.

Funeral services for Samuel Bartow Norwood Jr., 76, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2003 at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Norwood died Thursday, December 4, 2003. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Samuel Bartow and Ethel Norwood. He served in the U. S. Navy, graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy, and was a member and past president of the Lions Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as a deacon, chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher, and greeter, and was a great believer in missions and donated many handcrafted items to the annual bazaar. He served the City of Hartsville as a council member for fourteen years and mayor pro tem for many years. He was past president and member of the Pee Dee Pharmaceutical Association. He was also a member of the SC Pharmaceutical Association and in 1990 received the Bowl of Hygeia Award for his outstanding community service. He bought the Economy Drug Store in 1959 and operated it until his retirement in 2000. He was also co - founder of Economy Home Medical.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Harrelson Norwood of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, S. Bart and Janet Norwood III of Hartsville, SC, Stephen and Terry Norwood of Annandale, VA; daughter, Allison Norwood of Columbia, SC; sisters and brothers-in-law, Addie N. Gregg of Florence, SC, Jeanette N. and Cameron McNeill of Hartsville, SC, Gwen N. and Bobby Burch of Florence, SC Carolyn N. and Cecil Winburn of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Norwood, Barrett Norwood, Amelia Norwood, Anna Crosland Norwood and Samuel Norwood.

Roxie Catherine Matuse

Funeral services for Roxie Catherine Matuse, 72, will be held at 4p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mrs. Matuse died Saturday, April 3, 2004. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Hallie Dixon Valentine. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Keith Matuse.

Wade Hampton (Dub) Walters, Jr.,

Funeral services for Wade Hampton “Dub” Walters, Jr., 80, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Walters died Sunday, April 4, 2004. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Wade Hampton and Lula Hawkins Walters. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Carolina Upholstery since 1948. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, was involved in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Purple Heart twice. He was also a 50 year Mason.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Snipes Walters of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Wade and Jane Walters, III of Florence, SC, Bruce and Marissa Walters of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and David Tarlton of Darlington, SC, Churé and Robby Galloway of Hartsville, SC; sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby Gaskins of Chesterfield, SC, Johnnie Bryant of Hartsville, SC, Pat and Sammy Gibson of Hartsville, SC; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Ann Walters of Lugoff, SC, Leon and Brenda Walters of Hartsville, SC; sister-in-law, Betty Carol Walters of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Wesley Walters, Whitney Walters, Matthew Tarlton, Porter Riley, Elliot Riley; great - grandchild, Esther Walters. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry Walters and Carol Walters.

Mrs. Whitehead, widow of F. David “Dave” Whitehead, died Friday, July 30, 2004. Born in Gloucester, VA, she was a daughter of the late Wilton Conway and Cora Griswald Tucker. She resided in Covington, VA for forty years, and in 1986 moved to Hartsville, SC. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Women's Sunday School class and XYZ club.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gloria Whitehead of Cary, NC, John and Patty Whitehead of Hartsville, SC; sister, Julia Smith of Culpepper, VA; grandsons, Matthew, Brian, John, Adam, and Ross Whitehead.

Jane Beasley Duke

Graveside services for Jane Beasley Duke, 83, will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, Stokes Bridge Community. The Rev. Mrs. Duke, widow of Thomas W. Duke, Sr., died Sunday, August 1, 2004. Born in Lee Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late William Boyd and Aurella Woodham Beasley. She graduated from Lander College in 1941 and taught school in Blackville, McBee and North Hartsville. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Margaret Duke of Charlotte, NC; brother, Francis "Buster" Beasley of Stokes Bridge community, SC; 5 grandchildren; 10 great - grandchildren.

Ruth Ousley Burney

Graveside services for Ruth Ousley Burney, 86, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2002 in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Mrs. Burney, widow of Bill Burney, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Robert Lide and Nellie McInvaill Ousley and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a niece, Mildred Ousley King of Hartsville, SC; nephews, Bill Dailey and Howard Ousley; great niece, Lisa Mullis; great - great niece, Amy Talbert; great - great - great nephews, John and Allen Talbert.

Mr. Jones died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. Born in Florence, SC, he was a son of Jody Montgomery Jones and Lisa Brown Jones. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints. He graduated from Hartsville High School in 2002 and was a member of the baseball team.

Surviving are his father and mother, of Hartsville, SC; sister, Tyler Jones of Hartsville, SC; brother, Jent Jones of Hartsville, SC; special friends, Allison Sturdivant, Angela Oliver, and Chip Lowman, all of Hartsville, SC; paternal grandparents, Jackie and Jackie Jones of Hartsville, SC; maternal grandparents, Newet Laverne Brown of Hartsville, SC, Frances and Edward Mixon of Hartsville, SC. He was preceded in death by his brother, Justin Jones.

Mrs. Byrd died Monday, September 9, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Claude and Cainie McFarland. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years, a resident of the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, and a graduate of Antioch High School. She was married to her childhood sweetheart for 63 years.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis B. and Ned Blackman of Hartsville, SC, Ruth B. and Furman Galloway of Columbia, SC, Jean B. Smoak of Mullins, SC; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
