Mr. Dees, widower of Grace Helms Dees, died Thursday, January 16, 2003. Born in Lauringburg, NC, he was a son of the late James Bradley and Ellie Hasty Dees. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a loving father. He was employed with Sonoco Products Company for 31 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He enjoyed farming for over 50 years.

Mr. McLaughlin died Friday, January 17, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Fred C. and Viola Jones McLaughlin.

Mr. Baynes died Wednesday, January 29, 2003. Born in High Point, NC, he was a son of late Samuel Lorenzo and Mary Robeson Baynes. He was the owner and operator of the Carolina Food Shop for 24 years, a charter member and Deacon of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173, the Omar Shrine, the Retired Men's Club, and the Do - Si - Do Club. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, as well as a trusted friend to many.

Surviving are his wife of sixty - five years, Betty Maness Baynes of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Julia Baynes of Fountain Inn, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Betty Alice and Richard Harper of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

Mr. Winburn died Monday, February 3, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, he was a son of the late George Washington and Mary Jordan Winburn. He was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church, retired from Sonoco Products Company, and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Mrs. Newsome died Thursday, February 6, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Etson and Carrie Moore King. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church, Sunday School Teacher for fifty years, owner and operator of Newsome’s Grocery, and a substitute teacher for the Clyde Schools. She was known and loved by her family and friends as "Ma Coot".

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, James E. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Golden Fellowship. Previously she was a secretary at First Baptist Church, Carolina Elementary School, Frank Farm Equipment, and Midway Tractor.

Dr. Blackmon died Thursday, February 13, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Julian C. and Lila Folsom Blackmon. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, a graduate of Hartsville High School, Coker College, and Life University, Atlanta, GA. He taught chemistry at Hartsville High School for five years, practiced chiropractic in Hartsville for 10 years, and was employed with Royster Clark as a chemist.

Surviving are his wife, Lyn Terry Blackmon of Hartsville, SC; step - son, Barron Harold Windham, III of Hartsville, SC; sister, Ruth B. Stanley of Hartsville, SC; brother, Julian Curtis Blackmon, Jr. of Camden, SC.

Ellie Mae Rogers

Funeral services for Ellie Mae Galloway Rogers, 94, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mrs. Rogers, widow of Walter Gandy (Piggy) Rogers, died Thursday, January 2, 2003. Born in Florence County, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Pinckney and Maggie Apple Galloway. Mrs. Rogers was educated in the Timmonsville City Schools and attended Florence Business School. She was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she was the pianist for the men's Sunday school class for over 50 years. She was a member of the McIn - tosh Sunday school class and was active in circles and other church groups. Mrs. Rogers was a life - long member of the Hartsville Pilot Club with a 50 - year perfect attendance record. She worked a number of years with the Hartsville Print & Dye Works, served as the secretary to the Carolina Elementary School Principal, retired from the South Carolina Education System in 1980, and was a member of the Darlington County Retired Education Association.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Rogers and Jim Neighbors of Beaufort, SC; grandchildren, Susan Neighbors McLemore of Beaufort, SC, James D. Neighbors, Jr. of Wash - ington, VA, Beth Rogers Maust of Matthews, NC, Rebecca Rogers Taft of Hartsville, SC; 5 great - grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, James Rogers, and her sister, Margaret Gaskins.

Mr. Johnson died Saturday, February 15, 2003. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of Myrtle Gandy Johnson and the late John A. Johnson. He was a member of the North Hartsville Baptist Church, choir, Bill Baxley Sunday School class, and previously was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was employed with Perfection Gear for 20 years and was retired from Darlington County Schools Maintenance Department. He was a longtime Little League baseball coach and also coached and refereed basketball.

Surviving are his wife, Mary McDonald Johnson of Hartsville, SC; sons, Woody Johnson of Union, SC, Daniel Johnson of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Kenny Howle, Donna and Boyce Howle, Tonya and Lawrence Hawkins, all of Hartsville, SC; mother of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Jonnie Lou Parker and Jackie Teal, both of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Casey Johnson, Trent Johnson, Jerry Howle, Josh Howle, Amanda Howle, Kenneth Howle, Courtney Hawkins, Jessie Hawkins, Tate Hawkins.

William Claude Mims

Mr. Mims died Sunday, February 16, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Robert Preston and Mattie Parnell Mims. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a sergeant in the military police.

She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday school class. She worked with Clark & McCall Architects for 20 years and Larry Phillips C.P.A. for 4 years.

Surviving are her husband, Tommy Norton of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughter-in-law, Chris and Rhonda Norton of Hartsville, SC, Danny Norton, Sr. of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Sharon D. Norton of Dallas, TX, Tammy Norton of Florence, SC; sisters, Betty S. Walker of Marion, SC, Gloria S. Mrs. Flowers, widow of Roland F. Flowers died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Ben Timmons and Eula Lee Smith Watford. The family will receive friends at the residence. She was a member of Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving include five sons and daughters in law: Creighton and Nell Flowers, Millard Flowers, Grover Flowers, Manuel and Ivy Flowers, and Delton Flowers, all of Hartsville; five daughters and sons in law, Janie Lee and Frank Hall, Shirley Ann Woods, Margaret Ann and David Dixon, Linda R. Mr. Young died Monday, February 24, 2003. Born in Rockingham, NC, he was a son of the late Walter Thomas and Maude Robbins Young. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 50 years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1947 and had served as a deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher and homebound visitor. Everyone who knew Tom will remember him for his strong faith in God, his honesty and his belief in always being the best you can be.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Louise Watkins Young of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Frieda Young of Magnolia, MS, Johnny and Sharon Young of Lyman, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jim Hoffman of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren and spouses, Kim and Daryl Chopin, Vanessa and Beau Clark, Stephen and Julie Hoffman; great - grandchildren, Nathan Chopin, August Chopin, Will Clark.
