Mrs. Saleeby, wife of Edward E. Saleeby, Jr., died Saturday, March 1, 2003. Born in Amarillo, TX, she was a daughter of Georgia King Stanton and the late Jack Lyon Stanton. Mrs. Saleeby was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She graduated from Florence Darlington Technical College with a degree in Nursing and was a Registered Nurse. She received degrees in Art and Education from Coker College, taught art at Trinity Collegiate School, and was a member of the Black Creek Arts Council. She was recognized by Savannah College of Art and Design for her art curriculum as a guide for other teachers. She was a dedicated art teacher who loved to share the joy of art with others, especially children.

Surviving are her husband, Edward E. Saleeby, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; sons, Edward E. Saleeby, III, Nathaniel Stanton Saleeby, Caleb Cleveland McLaurin Saleeby, all of Hartsville, SC; mother, of Hartsville, SC; sisters and brother-in-law, Jean and David Adams of Holt, MI, Carol Stanton of Whitmore Lake, MI; brother and sister-in-law, Jack L. and Tracy Stanton of Florence, SC. Her sister, Susan Stanton, preceded her in death.

Mr. Weatherford died Sunday, March 2, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Wilson and Marie Bailey Weatherford. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, the Living Hope Sunday School Class, and the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Estelle Weatherford of Hartsville, SC; daughters and son-in-law, Effie and Furman Smith of Hartsville, SC, Pat Buffkin of Florence, SC; step - son and step - daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Lynett Griffin of Hartsville, SC; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Mr. Knowles died Tuesday, March 4, 2003. Born in Pottstown, PA, he was a son of the late David Wilson and Dorothy Winnie Knowles. He retired from Stanley Tools.

Surviving are his son, Kevin W. Diggs of Morven, NC; daughters, Gina Knowles of Hartsville, SC, Dorothy Machelle Knowles of Garden City, SC; sister, Dorothy Ann Jaffer of Beverly Hills, FL; grandchild, Patience Knowles of Hartsville, SC.

William Byerly "Speedy" Chapman

Graveside services for William Byerly “Speedy” Chapman, 70, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003 in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Chapman died Wednesday, March 5, 2003. Born in Darlington, SC, he was a son of the late William Gadi and Madge Griggs Chapman. He was a retired master sergeant in the SC National with 26 years of service and was also a member of the Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his brother-in-law, Bill Johnson of Hartsville, SC; nephews, Kyle Stephens Johnson and William R. Johnson, both of Hartsville,SC.

Mr. Bunch, widower of Millie Lovelace Bunch, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Julian Oscar and Essie Sullivan Bunch. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and the Higher Ground Sunday School Class. He served in the Navy during WWII, was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and the Omar Shrine.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Dow and Tonda Bunch of Hartsville, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Johnnie Blakeney of Hartsville, SC; granddaughters, Brittainy Bunch and Joanna Bunch, both of Hartsville, SC.

Earl C. Trammell

Mr. Trammell died Saturday, March 8, 2003. Born in Waco, TX, he was a son of the late Ray and Pearl Williams Trammell. He served in the US Army and was retired from General Motors with 33 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Geick Trammell of Holly, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Tonya Trammell of Burton, MI; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Brad Taljonick of Indianapolis, IN; step - sons and spouse, Grady Allen Weatherford, Jr. of Darlington, SC, Steve and Kim Weatherford of Darlington, SC;

Mrs. Haney, widow of Frank Haney, Jr., died Monday, March 10, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Duncan and Naomi Fields Galloway. She was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church and served in the WAC during World War II. She was retired from Sara Lee Hoisery.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald D. and Diane Haney of Hartsville, SC, Danny Ray Haney of Darlington, SC; sister, Modine G. Schramm of Hartsville, SC; five grandchildren; one great grandchild.

Mrs. Hopkins died Wednesday, March 12, 2003. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Robbie Howle Kelley. She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church. She was previously employed with the Landmark Inn and Sonoco Products Company and sold BeautiControl cosmetics.

Surviving are her husband, Walter "Wootsie" Hopkins of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Joe Euten of Hartsville, SC, Donna and Joe Kelly of Hartsville, SC, Laurie and Guy Levy of Millbrook, NY; sisters, Anne Howell of Hartsville, SC, Judy Hopkins of Hartsville, SC, Ruth Belk of Cross, SC; grandchildren, Joseph Kelly, Ambre Kelly, Christopher Skinner, Brianne Skinner, Joshua Jordan, Jeremy Jordan. She was preceded in death by her son Hank Skinner.

Mrs. Edwards, widow of G. Lever Edwards, died Friday, March 14, 2003. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Wister Winston and Eva Lee Cooley. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and served many years as the minister of music and choir director. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and taught piano for over 60 years. She was a member of the Pinelake Garden Club and the Hartsville Music Club. She was inducted into the Lifetime National Music Club.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, John “Monk” and Susan Edwards of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Lu and Mendel Smith, Jr. of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Mendel D. Smith, III, Marianne Martin; great - grandchild, Mary Wallace Martin.

Malvin Goodale

Funeral services for Malvin Stanley Goodale, 79, will be held at 4:00 P.M. Monday, March 17, 2003 at Souls Harbor. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 16, 2003 from 5 - 7 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Goodale died Friday, March 14, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, SC, he was a son of the late Charlie and Ada Christmas Goodale. He attended Soul's Harbor, retired from Sonoco, and was currently employed as a Security Guard at Wellman.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Steen Goodale of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Lisa Goodale of Hartsville, SC, Randy and Valerie Goodale of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Janet G. and David Ikner of Conway, SC; sister, Gladys Walters of Florence, SC; brother, Quinton Goodale of Murrell's Inlet, SC; grandchildren, Brandy Baker, B. J. Baricska, Nicole Goodale, Anthony Goodale.

Bobby Gardner

Mr. Gardner died Saturday, March 15, 2003. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late James Bolin and Ruth Carter Gardner.

Mr. Sowell died Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, he was a son of the late John Purdy and Sarah Knight Sowell. He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and had served as the Sunday School director. He served in the U. S. Marines during World War II. He was a local businessman in Pine Ridge and was very active in the community.

Surviving are his wife, Beady Mae Lynch Sowell of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Jimmy Watkins of Darlington, SC, Glenda and Cam Powers of Hartsville, SC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Paul and Iva Sowell of McBee, SC, Kenneth and Patsy Ann Sowell of McBee, SC; grandchildren, Terry Sowell, Jr., Melissa Heiden, Shannon Copes, Brandis Watkins, Ray Gardner, Jr., Summer Gardner; great - grandchildren, Trey Sowell, Taylor Sowell, Graham Copes, Dalton Gardner, Shyanne Cranford. He was preceded in death by his son, Terry Sowell.

Mr. Newsome died Friday, March 28, 2003. Born in Darlington, SC, he was a son of the late Wesley A. and Willie Blanche King Newsome. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church and for 20 years served as the Sunday School superintendent for the Hartsville Gum Branch Baptist Church. He was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing and was also retired as an auto dealer. He was an avid bird hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Galloway Newsome of Florence, SC; daughter and son-in-law, DeEtte and Wally Johnson of St. Thomas, VI; sister and brother-in-law, Joye and Luther Howard of Hartsville, SC; brother and sister-in-law, John A. and Patsy Newsome of Newport, TN; granddaughter, Ashley Pechon.
