Mr. Smith died Friday, May 9, 2003. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Osborne Lee and Florence Howell Smith. He attended Mt. Elon Baptist Church, and was the owner and operator of Tommy's Self Service. He started working at the age of thirteen at the corner store in Lydia, SC with Guy Gainey. A butcher by trade, he was well known for his homemade sausage, barbecue chicken and ribs, and world famous hot dogs. He also had a great love for antique automobiles.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Dampier Smith of Bishopville, SC; sons and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Dana Smith of Florence, SC, Steve Smith of Jensen Beach, FL; daughter, Lisa A. Smith of Charleston, SC; sisters, Annie Sue Tyner of Hartsville, SC, Betty Jean Tyner of Patrick, SC; granddaughter, Madison Nicole (Sweet Pea) Smith. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cyril Smith, James Smith, and Heyward Smith; sister, Florine Smith. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the community.

Mrs. DuBose, widow of Victor Ronald DuBose, died Sunday, April 6, 2003. Born in Lamar, SC, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Deborah Marsh Laffoday.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Victor Ronald and Montye McKenzie DuBose, Jr. of Charleston, SC, Richard Laffoday and Nellita Pridmore DuBose of Summerville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Lillian DuBose and Romaine Howard of Tarboro, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Samuel K. and Joanne Laffoday of Stone Mountain, GA; grandchildren, L. Marsh Howard and Romaine Howard, III, both of Tarboro, NC, Ragan A. DuBose and Taryn M. DuBose, both of Charleston, SC. She was preceded in death by her sister, Deborah Laffoday McAbee, and her brother, Charles W. Laffoday, Jr.

Mrs. Dickinson, widow of Bert Dickinson, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late William and Mae Hunter Burrows. She was a member of the Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, SC, served on several altar guilds at various churches, and volunteered for the Meals - On - Wheels Program. She was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Marine Corps. Mae was truly a devoted wife and mother.

Surviving are her sons, Mark Dickinson of Hartsville, SC, David Dickinson of Cumberland, RI, Robert Dickinson of Webster, NY; sister, Marge Daubert of Lancaster, PA; grandchildren, Anna Dickinson, Elise Dickinson, Steven Dickinson, Caitlin Dickinson.

Mr. Weatherford died Saturday, May 10, 2003. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Johnny Coleman and Annie Gainey Weatherford.

Funeral services for Charles L. West, 67, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, May 18, 2003 at the Chapel of Brown - Pennington - Atkins. Mr. West died Thursday, May 15, 2003. Born in Montgomery Co., AR, he was a son of the late Tom L. and Beulah Hatton West. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was retired with 35 years of service from International Paper.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Winburn West of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Wendy "Becky" Watkins of Hartsville, SC; sister, Barbara West Johnson of Mt. Ida, AR; grandchildren, Joseph Watkins and Nichole Watkins; step - grandchildren, Toni Watkins and Donnie Watkins.

Eunice Miller

Mrs. Eunice Miller, 82, wife of the late Gary E. Miller, Jr, entered into her rest Friday, May 16, 2003, after a brief illness. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Father Karl Reosch, Celebrant. Final Commendation and farewell prayers will be in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home. The family will lead a rosary at 6:00 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at the funeral home. Visitation will follow 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. She was born in Garyville, LA and moved to Hartsville in 1945.

Eunice was a founding and dedicated member of St, Mary’s Catholic Church. She gave cookies and a “God Bless You” to every child who knocked on her door. She was not only a blessing to the Catholic community, but to all in Hartsville who witnessed her love for all people and her steadfast faith in God.

Her survivors are Rebecca Ferris of Maryland and her husband Wayne; Diane Miller of Columbia and her daughter Kathleen; Ruthie Hancock of Florence and her sons Matt of Columbia and Tommy of Colorado; Bob Miller of Florence and his wife Jonnie and their children Philip and Rachel; Roberta Miller - Haraway of Raleigh and her husband Rick; John Miller of Georgetown and his children Michael and Meredith; James Miller of Maryland and his wife Judy and their children David and Lisa; Margee Waddell of Florence and her husband Jimmy and their children Jamie of Tennessee, Ashley, Jody, Whitney, Sloane and Mary Beth of Florence; Teresa Thomas of Rock Hill and her husband Mark. Her sisters from Louisiana are Elise Zeringue, Gertrude Walker, Inez Blanc and Elsie Cambre. Four brothers predeceased her. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church; 363 N. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Betty Byrd of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Janice Byrd of Florence, SC; sister, Ester Hoffman of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Teresa Earle, William Byrd, and Mark Byrd; 11 great - grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Harley Byrd, her brothers, James Winburn and William Winburn, and her sister, Mary Teal Griggs.

Col. Byron D. Greene (Ret.)

Col. Greene, widower of Betty Byerly Greene, died Monday, June 2, 2003. Born in Severna Park, MD, he was the son of the late Byron D. and Alice White Greene, Sr. He was a 1946 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Colonel Greene was a patriot and warrior whose entire life was guided by his West Point Motto: DUTY HONOR COUNTRY He served his country for 27 years as an Army Infantry Officer and was decorated for heroism and valor in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Throughout, he was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and memorable role model for those who knew him. He is not gone for as they say, "old soldiers never die, they just fade away!"

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Col. Byron D. "Ron" and Nina Greene III of Columbia, SC, Drs. William Michael and Bronwen Greene of Greenville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Byerly "Pegi" and Tommy Vaughn of Forsyth, GA; sisters, Francis Chinn of Murrells Inlet, SC and Anne Hinson of Wilmington, NC; 5 grandchildren.

Sarah Brunson Zemp

Funeral services for E. Riley Rowe, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003 at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate directed by Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 31, 2003 from 4 - 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Rowe died Wednesday, May 28, 2003. Born in Trenton, NC, he was a son of the late Judge Joseph Vance and Gladys Loftin Rowe. He grew up in Aberdeen, NC. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He received his Bachelor of Science at North Carolina State University and his Masters of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina. Early in his career he was employed with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation in China. He was employed with Sonoco for 30 years and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He later served as Chairman of the Board of Polyrol, Inc. and held numerous patents of his inventions. He was also a member of Mensa and the Civitans and was a former member of the Hartsville Jaycees and was named Jaycee of the Year in 1957. He served in the US Army during World War II and was the commander of the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Hine Rowe of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, David L. and Virginia Rowe of Raleigh, NC, Steven E. and Sharon Rowe of Hartsville, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth "Lisa" and Gary Ray of Corona, CA, Judith and Tim Britt of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Catherine Corey of Santa Clarita, CA, Eleanor Swift of Aberdeen, NC, Gladys Caudle of Spartanburg, SC; 6 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Philip B. Rowe, and four brothers, Joseph V. Rowe, Jr., Arthur R. Rowe, F. Douglas Rowe, and J. Lawrence Rowe.

Mrs. Hearon, widow of Thomas Edward Hearon, Jr., died Thursday, June 5, 2003. Born in Richburg, SC, in 1920, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Septimus and Martha Marion Jordan. Mrs. Hearon was a graduate of Winthrop College in 1940. She taught in the Kershaw County School system for 31 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the John V. Murray Circle, and the Bethune Woman's Club.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Thomas Edward and Faye Hays Hearon, III of Columbia, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Septima Hearon and John Leslie Smith of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth Hearon Lindsey, Mary Kent Hearon, Martha Marion Smith; grandsons, Thomas Edward Hearon, IV, Justin Leslie Smith; great - grandson, Wilson Buchanan Lindsey. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ellen Hicklin.
