Charles Boswell will officiate and Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 24, 2002 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mr. Kelly died Thursday, August 22, 2002. Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of Joan Urwiler Kelly and the late Major Anderson Kelly, Jr. Mr. Kelly was employed with Wal - Mart.

Surviving are his sisters, Diane K. Cassidy of Hartsville, SC, Karen K. DeBerry of Panama City, FL, Shirley K. Mozingo of Hartsville, SC, Wanda K. Wingo of Hartsville, SC; brothers, Major A. Graveside services for Hybert Larue “Bert” Matthews, 76, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at Douglas Presbyterian Church cemetery, Lancaster, SC. Dr. Jeri Perkins will officiate directed by Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Matthews, husband of Patsy Barton Matthews, died Saturday, August 24, 2002. Born in Florence County, SC, He was a son of the late Horace Zingle and Nannie Boyd Matthews. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of Hartsville Lodge # 173, member and past Patron of Hartsville Chapter #91, order of The Eastern Star, and The Gideons of the Hartsville Chapter.

Surviving are his wife of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sherry Matthews of Hartsville, SC; sister, Sara Powell of Washington, PA; grandchildren, Amber Matthews, Haley Matthews and Landon Matthews all of Hartsville, SC; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnson died Monday, August 19, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, he was a son of the late J. Cordy and Kattie Howle Johnson. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. He was retired from Dupont and was engaged in farming and cattle.

Billie Jean Howle Blackmon

Mrs. Blackmon died Tuesday, August 27, 2002. Born in Florence County, SC, she was a daughter of Jean Henderson Howle and the late William Howle. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina Law School. She was a former Public Defender and was an Assistant Solicitor. At the time of her death she was in private practice.

Surviving are her husband, Wallace Leslie Blackmon, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; stepdaughter, Katie Blackmon of Greenville, SC; mother, of Darlington, SC; sister, Ann Easterling of Darlington, SC; brother, Danny Howle of Darlington, SC. She was preceded in death by her brothers David and Michael Howle.

Funeral services for Harold Eugene Player, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mr. Player died Wednesday, August 28, 2002. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of the late Emory Olin and Carrie McElveen Player, Sr. He attended Hartsville High School and Palmer College. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Moose Lodge # 1770 and Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173. He served in the U. S. Air Force. He was a barber since 1960 and was retired from Daniel Construction Co.

Surviving are his son, Michael Player of Augusta, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and David Baynham and Lynn and Dwayne Miller, all of N. Augusta, SC, Debbie and Rick Maybee of Evans, GA, Linda Player of Odgen, VT; brother, Terrell Player of Hartsville, SC; sister, Norma Lee Howle of Ridgeway, SC; five grandchildren.

Mr. Gainey died Wednesday, August 28, 2002. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was a son of Etta Ree Freeman Gainey and the late John Dawson Gainey.

Surviving are his sons, John - John Gainey, Travis Gainey; daughter, Patricia Rhinehardt; step - son, Phillip Bell; mother of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Gloria Brunson, Wanda Stallons, Sandra Kelley; brothers, Larry Gainey, Donnie Gainey, Jimmy Gainey, Grady Gainey; half - brother, Dustin Gainey; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His brothers, Bobby Gainey and Ronnie Gainey, preceded him in death.

Graveside services for Mary Pauline Funderburke Kennedy, 87, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2002 in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Mrs. Kennedy died Thursday, August 29, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ira B. and Pearl Boan Funderburke, Sr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Deborah Sunday School class. She was retired from the Hartsville Mill.

Surviving are brothers, Grady R. Funderburke of Lake View, SC, Ronnie E. Funderburke of Hartsville, SC; nieces and nephews.

William Lee Johnson

Funeral services for William Lee Johnson, 74, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 1, 2002 at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 31, 2002 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Johnson died Friday, August 30, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, he was a son of the late Calhoun J. and Annie Hill Johnson. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans. He served in the United States Army and retired from McLean Trucking Company after thirty - five years of service. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Mable Rose Johnson of Hartsville, SC; son, Joel Johnson of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Betty Ann Woods of Dunfries, VA, Peggy Elaine Crowley of Bishopville, SC, Mable Lee Byrd of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Ruth Kelly of Hartsville, SC, Emma Jane Mixon of Bishopville, SC; brother, C. B. Johnson of Pawtucket, RI; step - brother, James Johnson of Hartsville, SC; step - sisters, Cindy Johnson Griggs of Hartsville, SC, Vandetta Johnson Speckman of Fort Mill, SC, Sandra Johnson Clodfelter of Winston Salem, NC, Ziora Johnson Ritter of Roanoke, VA, Jo Johnson Hanna of Florence, SC, Betty Johnson Lundy of Forsythe, GA; 7 grandchildren; 7 great - grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters, Annie Basket and Jessie Matthews.

Alfred J. Leucht

Mr. Leucht died Wednesday, August 28, 2002. Born in Worcester, MA, he was a son of the late Alfred R. and Celina Waring Leucht. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict in WWII.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Gainey Leucht of McBee, SC; sisters, Millicent E. Primeau of Worcester, MA, Dorothy P. Hoffner of North Eastham, MA.

Katherine Frye Kale

Funeral services for Katherine Frye Kale, 91, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 at the Brown - Pennington - Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Box 69, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Kale, widow of Allen Kale, died Thursday, August 22, 2002. Born in Carthage, NC, she was a daughter of the late John Ashley and Katherine Jackson Frye. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Deborah Sunday School class and the Current Missions Circle.

Surviving are her brother, Robert Edward Frye of McLean, VA; sister, Mary Ruth Boroughs of Asheboro, NC; step - granddaughter, Kathy Kale Crawley of Hartsville, SC; step - great grandchildren, Kale Byerly and Cole Crawley; 25 nieces and nephews.

Cora Miller Phillips

Swannanoa - Cora Miller Phillips, 95, of Swannanoa went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, December 14th, at Asheville Health Care Center with her family by her side.

She was the daughter of the late Mack and Lizzie Miller and the wife of the late Daniel Byrd, Claude Robert Lollis, Sr. and Ed Phillips. Cora was also predeceased by two children Richard Byrd and Helen Byrd and three granddaughters Peggy Morrow, Elizabeth Lyda and Shirley Brown. She was a faithful member of Oakley Free Will Baptist Church. Cora loved to sing gospel music in church and at the nursing center. She enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her favorite baseball team the Atlanta Braves.

She is survived by a daughter Thelma Hunter of Candler, and a son Bob Lollis, and wife, Shirley of Swannanoa. Cora leaves behind 21 grandchildren, several great grand children and great - great - children along with many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Thursday, December 17th at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday until the service hour.

The family would like to thank the staff of Asheville Health Care for the care they provided Mrs. Phillips.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain.

Mae Buckner Fox

Fairview - Mae Buckner Fox entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November. 8th 2009 with her family by her side.

She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Matilda Buckner. Mae was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Gilbert Fox, by two daughters, two sons, and all of her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Fox was an avid gardener who loved flowers. This was the first year that she did not put her garden out. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters Louise Sales of St Augustine FL, Janice Wright of Fletcher, Charlotte Foley (Jim) of Candler, and Darlene Maynor (Ronnie) of Fairview and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Chapel of Brigman's Funeral Service in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm till the service hour at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery.

Wesley Herbert Rice

Swannanoa - Wesley Herbert Rice entered into eternal rest Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at his home.

He was the son of the late Lawson and Texana Rice. Wesley was predeceased by a sister Vera Carson, brothers Perry Rice, Joe Rice, and Wiley Rice. Mr. Rice loved to work in the garden, play music, and to work his sawmill. Wesley loved to talk to everyone about the Bible. Many people will say that his ability to speak of God's word was a gift. He was a great husband, dad, and grandfather. Wesley had many recipes that his family and friends loved for him to prepare. He worked for the Black Mountain Center for 23 years as a kitchen supervisor.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Berniece Rice, daughters Joyce Jarvis (Mark), Vickie Rice (John) sons Michael Rice (Jan) and Leslie Bowens, brothers Dallas Rice and Zeke Rice and a sister Harriet Ledford. His grandchildren are Shane, Shannon, Donna,Megan, Selina, and Tanya. The great grandchildren are Bridgett Caleb, Ezra, Solomon, Payton,Serenity, Brandy, Devin Anthony,Colby,and Berielle.

The funeral service will be Friday, 1:00 pm at Peek's Chapel in Mars Hill, burial will follow at the Rice cemetery on East Fork. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6pm till 8 pm at Brigman's Funeral Service in Black Mountain. Reverend's Mark Jarvis and Billy Murray will be conducting the services.

Eulus Morgan

Eulus Morgan, 67, passed away after a lengthy illness Tuesday, November 17th, 2009, at the Charles George VA Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was the son of the late Russell and Nellie Morgan. Eulus was predeceased by brothers Louis Morgan, Wreston Morgan, and Kenneth Morgan. Eulus served his country from 1964 till 1966 in the Dominican Republic in the 503rd MP Battalion. After his military service he worked as a Truck Driver until his retirement.

He is survived by sisters Macy Watts of Alexandria, VA; Dottie Shoemaker (Bion) of Inman SC; and Jean Hull (Heyward) of Chapel Hill, NC; and brother,Ray Morgan of Houston Texas.

The burial service will be Friday at 10:00 am at the WNC State Veteran's cemetery with Military honors. A memorial service led by first cousin Dr. Bob Morgan will follow at 11:00 am in the chapel of Brigman's Funeral Service in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice unit at the Charles George VA Medical Center, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.

Albert Wilson Jr.

Swannanoa - Albert Wilson Jr. went to be with his Heavenly Father November, 28th at Grace Health Care after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Albert was the son of the late Albert and Ethel Wilson. He was predeceased by his wife Pauline of 58 years and a son Mike Wilson in 2005. Mr. Wilson was a 20 year Veteran of the Air Force where he was an instructor for pilots in bomb deployment and radar use during the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the Military, Albert went to work for Orkin Pest Control as a manager and retired after 20 years of service. His love for the Lord lead him to become an ordained minister and serve Grovestone Baptist Church for many years. He was a great father and loved to dote over his grandchildren especially when it was ice cream time.

Albert is survived by a daughter Paula Hunsinger (Bruce), sons John Wilson (Bea), Hank Wilson (Kathy), and Jeff Wilson (Cynthia), sisters Lola Gary, Edith Charles, and Ruby Hunter, brothers James, Woodrow, John, and Frank Wilson. He leaves behind 9 grand children and 6 great grand children and a large church family.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, 7:00 pm at the Grovestone Baptist Church, the family will receive friends at 6:00 pm until the service hour at the church. Burial will be Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Western Carolina State Veterans cemetery in Black Mountain with full military honors.

The family would like to thank the staff of Grace Health Care for the care they provided Mr. Wilson. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the building fund of Grovestone Baptist Church in Swannanoa.
