Elaine Cress Carr

BLACK MOUNTAIN - Elaine Cress Carr entered into eternal rest on December 6, 2009 at the John F. Keever Solace Center.

She was the daughter of the late Ora and Cloe Cress, and predeceased by her sister, Genena Hale. Mrs. Carr was married to Leonard Carr in 1945 who died in 1980. She spent 45 years in Miami, FL having moved there in 1947. Mrs. Carr moved to Black Mountain in 1992.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Sandy Fleener, and her husband, Kent; granddaughter, Wendi Fleener; and grandson, Marshall Fleener; and several nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Black Mountain United Methodist Church with the Revs. Lynda Briggs, Rick Mills, and Gerald Collins officiating. Burial will be at the Vista Memorial Gardens in Miami, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Black Mountain United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brigman's Funeral Service in Black Mountain.

Roger Dale Robinson

Roger Dale Robinson, 60, of 1247 Garren Creek Road in Fairview departed this life on December 17, 2009 after a lengthy battle with illness.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he served with honor in the United States Army, before beginning a long and successful career with Hunter Nissan until his retirement in 2005. Roger was an avid sportsman who loved to fish and play golf and was a much beloved member of the Fairview community.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Mary Ruth Robinson of the home, his son Ryan Marsh and wife, Wendy of Fairview, his son John Robinson, who is currently deployed with the Navy in Iraq, his daughter, Tana Oliver and husband James, of Fairview, his mother Doris Morrow of Fairview, his sister, Pat Clark and husband Gary, of Hilton Head, SC, his brother David Robinson and wife, Kathy of Fairview and his grandchildren, Christopher Marsh of Fairview and Lauren Robinson, JT Washington and Roger Wallace Robinson of Virginia Beach, VA.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. David Schaffer and Bruce Buckner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM, Wednesday until the service hour. Funeral services are entrusted to Brigman’s Funeral Service in BlackMountain.

BLACK MOUNTAIN - Gladys Marie Wright of Ackworth GA Black Mountain went to be with her Heavenly Father on December, 24 2009 with her family by her side.

Marie is predeceased by her parents Charlie Morgan and Nancy Marlowe and her husband Marvin V. Wright.

Mrs. Wright is survived by her daughter Faye White (Jerry) and son Terry Wright (Savina) also 3 Brothers and 2 sisters along with 4 grandsons 4 great - grandsons and 3 great - granddaughters.

The family will receive friends in the chapel of Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain Tuesday, December 29 at 11:00 am until the service hour. The funeral will be at 12:00 PM Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home.

Ruthie Lucille (Melton) Searcy
MARION - Ruthie Lucille Melton Searcy of McDowell went to be with her Heavenly Father Saturday, December 26th with her family by her side.

She was born in Buncombe County to the late Lee and Mary Melton. Ruthie is predeceased by her husband Jack Searcy, daughter Ruby Brendle, sons Edmond Melton, Eugene Searcy, sisters Ethel Robinson and Frances Bowers, and a brother Robert Melton.

Mrs. Searcy is survived by daughters Shirley Womick and Pat Biddix, sisters Syble Elmore and Bessie Huskins and a brother Clarence Melton. Nieces Sharon Howard, Sandra Elmore, and Mary Williams nephews Jerry Bowers, Ron Huskins, Thomas Huskins, Larry Elmore, and Mark Elmore. Ruthie had 9 grand children and one great - grandchild Emma which is the 5th generation of the family.

The funeral service will be at 6:30 PM on Tuesday with the Revs. Tommy and Judy Hardin officiating at Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 pm until the service hour at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the funeral home to help the funeral expenses.

Lynn Hipps
May 8, 1953 - Mon Dec 28, 2009

Swannanoa – Junior Lynn Hipps, 56, entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 28, 2009.

A native of Greeneville, TN where he attended South Green High School, he lived most of his life in Swannanoa and was the son of the late Charlie and Marcella Stills Hipps. Lynn worked at Beacon Mfg. Co. for 32 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Phillips Hipps; daughters, Shannon Hipps of Black Mountain and Ashley Hipps of Swannanoa; sisters, Brenda Hipps Juso of Alexander and Crickett Hipps Burkey of Swannanoa; brothers, Gary and Carroll Hipps of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Kory and Andy Jeno of Black Mountain, and step - father, Ron Labrum.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday in the Chapel of Brigman’s Funeral Service in Black Mountain with the Rev. Arnold Vess and Mr. Bill Bridges officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Lynn’s memory.

JAMES ENGLISH

FLORENCE - James English, husband of Ella Mae Graves English, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

He was the brother-in-law of Elder Charles E. Graves.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Boatwright on Main in Darlington with the Rev. Merritt Graves officiating. Burial will be in Williams cemetery in Gressen.

The family will receive friends at High Hampton Road, Spauldin Height, Florence.

Boatwright Chapel on Main is in charge of arrangements.

CAMARION E. STILLWELL

FLORENCE - Infant Camarion Emanuel Stillwell, grandson of the late Jim Brayboy, died Nov. 15, 2003, at McLeod Women's Pavilion, Florence.

Born Nov. 15, 2003, at McLeod Women's Pavilion, Florence, he was a son of Carl L. Stillwell Jr. and Shonstella Brayboy Stillwell.

Survivors besides his parents of the home of Turbeville include maternal grandparents, Elder Don Lowery and Betty Brayboy Lowery of Turbeville; and paternal grandparents, Carl L. Stillwell Sr. and Barbara Miller Stillwell of Jackson, Ga.

Graveside services will be held at noon Wednesday at House of Prayer Memorial Garden, 201 Douglas Swamp Road, Lynchburg, with Elder Robert Rabb officiating.

The family will receive friends at his parent's residence, 2286 Pope St., Turbeville.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MARIE T. PRESCOTT

BISHOPVILLE - Marie Toney Prescott, 58, died at her home on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, in Lee County.

The family will receive friends at 198 Josey Road, Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home.

WILLIE BRAILEY

DURHAM, N.C. - Mr. Willie Brailey died Sunday in a local hospital in Durham, N.C., after a long illness.

Born in Lynchburg, S.C., he was a son of Mrs. Marie Wilson Brailey and the late Archie Brailey Sr. He attended the public schools of Lee County before moving to Durham.

He leaves to cherish his wife, Patricia Diane Brailey; two daughters, Mary Alice Sanders and Valerie Clayton; one son, Kerry Evans, all of Durham, N.C.; his mother, Marie Wilson Brailey of Boston; two brothers, Archie "Teddy" Brailey and Earnest "Bobby" Brailey, both members of the staff of Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg; two sisters, Josephine Brailey of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Queen Shend of Boston; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Brailey and Hattie "Mae" Brailey of Lynchburg; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins; and a special friend, James Wilson of Lynchburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the New Methodist Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. Burial will be in a local city cemetery.

LUCILLE R. COOPER

Lucille R. Cooper, 80, widow of Jeremiah Cooper, died Nov. 17, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 28, 1923, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Adelaide Ricks.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 7185 Skinner Road, Gable 29051.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIE J. JAY

Willie James Jay, 57, husband of Shirley Miles Jay, died Nov. 18, 2003, at the Dorn Veterans Medical Center.

Born June 13, 1947, in Ward, he was a son of Ethel Smallwood Jay and the late William Jay.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 40 Bridgepointe Drive, Sumter 29154.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

AVERY G. ASBILL

BISHOPVILLE - Graveside services for Avery Getson Asbill, age 90, who died Nov. 19, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Bishopville Presbyterian Church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be following the graveside service.

Mr. Asbill was born in Batesburg, a son of the late Henry G. and Dolly Duke Asbill. He was retired from the E.I. Du Pont De Nemours in Camden. He was a member of the Masons and the Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Perry Randle of Sumter; granddaughters, Mrs. Wesley (Laura) Gainey of North Augusta and Mrs. Thomas (Melissa) Primm of Lake Norman, N.C.; great - granddaughter, Emily Gainey of Columbia; and a sister, Edith (Bunny) Mathis of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Skinner Asbill; and three sisters, Utah Austin, Louise Groves and Marjorie Walker.

Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund, 215 S. Main St., Bishopville, SC 29010 or a charity of your choice.

EVA R. BURKE

SUMMERTON - Eva Ruth Stubblefield Burke, 76, widow of Carless M. Burke Jr., died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home.

Born Nov. 27, 1926, in Oil City, La., she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Ruby Martin Stubblefield. She was a retired seamstress for Levi - Strauss and was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church. She was lovingly cared for by Chris and Kathy Jennings, Kevin and Donna Hogg, and Eva Sealey.

Surviving are two daughters, Glenda K. Burke of Mt. Pleasant and Cynthia Ann Warren of North Charleston; a son, Wayne Milford Burke of Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, Troy Stubblefield of Oil City, La., and Charles Edward Stubblefield of Broken Arrow, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great - grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Lynn Burke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Larry Kennedy will officiate. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. Saturday in Carolina Memorial Park in Charleston.

Pallbearers will be Chris Jennings, Kevin Hogg, Mitchell Hogg, Don Jeffords, John Vohs, Larry Warren and Jim Williams.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 1265 Princes Trace Circle, Summerton.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri - County, 1236 - B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.
