MARIE TONEY PRESCOTT

BISHOPVILLE - Marie T. Prescott, widow of Heyward Prescott III, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at her residence, 198 Josey Road, Bishopville.

Born in Lee County, April 28, 1945, she was a daughter of the late James T. Toney and Marie Addison Toney. She attended the public schools of Lee County and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1963. She was employed at Lee County Memorial Hospital and the Covenant Place in Sumter. She was a member of New Zion AME Church, where she sang on the choir, was active with the Sunday school, missionary society and the stewardess board.

Surviving are three brothers, Jobe Toney (Willie Mae) of Columbia, James Toney (Ethel) of Bishopville and Louis Toney (Thelma) of Roselle, N.J.; four sisters, Elouise Tiller of Atlanta, Maple Rouse (Roy) of Sumter, Carrie Wilson and Thelma Dowell (Willie Lee) of Bishopville; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Prescott of Bishopville; and four aunts.

The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Zion AME Church with the Rev. F.W. Spears officiating, assisted by the Rev. P. Mixon and the Rev. T. York. Burial will be in the Gum Spring Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at 198 Josey Road, Bishopville.

Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BETTIE KEELS

MANNING - Bettie Trimnal Boykin Keels, 89, widow of Sam A. Keels, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, in Hopewell Health Care in Sumter.

Born Dec. 21, 1913, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late John R. and Mary Jane Davis Trimnal. She was first married to the late Eugene Boykin and was a member of Harmony Church in Sumter.

Surviving are a son, J.E. Keels Sr. of Manning; a daughter, Carolyn Legette of Hemingway; a sister, Mary McCaskill of Sumter; five grandchildren; and 11 great - grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Drew Choate, the Rev. Shonn Keels and the Rev. Fred Treaster will officiate. Burial will follow in Piedmont cemetery in Bishopville.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Keels, Finley McCaskill, David Boyce, Jack Miles and Larry McCaskill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Terry Lee, 2036 Spigner Road, Alcolu, SC 29001.

WILLIE J. JAY

Willie James Jay, 56, husband of Shirley Miles Jay, died Nov. 18, 2003, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

Born June 13, 1947, in Edgefield County, he was a son of Ethel Smallwood Jay and the late William Jay. He was a 1964 graduate of Ridge Spring High School, Ridge Spring. At an early age, he received Christ at Mt. Alpha Baptist Church. He rendered faithful service at the Alconbury Church in England and the St. Paul AME Church, Sumter. After spiritually maturing, he became a member of the Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the EMOG ministry as secretary and vice chairperson and on the parking lot ministry. On July 27, 2003, he received the Man of the Year Award at the Enon Missionary Baptist Church. He served faithfully in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged as a master sergeant.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include his pet, B.J. (Smile) of the home; five sisters, Barbara Thomas and Gwendolyn (Larry) Mobley, both of Johnston, Doris (Frank) Roberson of North Augusta, Betty (Anderson) Meachem of Monetta, Sharon (Marvin) Summers of Batesburg; three brothers, Nathaniel (Gwendolyn) Jay of Ridge Spring, Earl (Delores) Jay of Batesburg and Danny Jay of Ward; father and mother-in-law, Eirvin and Cora Miles of Phenix City, Ala.; three sisters-in-law, Carrie (Alex) Valentin of Columbus, Ga., Cora (Ural) Goodnight of Ft. Washington, Md., and Telisa (Kenneth) Jones of Phenix City; four brothers-in-law, Eraskine (Cathy) Miles of Anderson, Bobby (Saleman) Miles of Phenix City, Larry (Priscilla) Miles of Pike Road, Ala., and Daniel (Brenda) Miles of Phenix City; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Enon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes Sr., pastor, Pastors Phillip Simun, Eldwin Griffin, Clarence Kenner and Minister Rossi Ramsey officiating.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Burial will be held at noon Monday at Mt. Alpha Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 40 Bridge Point Drive, Sumter 29154.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

GRACE RAUHOF

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Mrs. Grace Clementine Graybeal Rauhof, age 105, of 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, in the Appalachian Christian Village.

Mrs. Rauhof was a native of West Jefferson in Ashe County, N.C., and had been a resident of Washington County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late William Baxter and Maggie Jane Austin Graybeal.

She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Carson Newman College and did graduate work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Appalachian State University, N.C., and East Tennessee State University.

Mrs. Rauhof was an educator for 49 years and had served as a guidance counselor, English teacher and Latin teacher in Rogersville, Johnson City, Boone and Washington College Academy. She retired from the Washington County School System. She was a member of the National Retired Teacher's Association, Tennessee Retired Teacher's Association and the Washington County Retired Teacher's Association. Mrs. Rauhof was a member of the American Classical Society of Latin Teachers.

She was a member and former elder of Salem Presbyterian Church, Limestone. Mrs. Rauhof was also a member of the choir and Women's Church Organization as well as a former Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rauhof was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce C. Rauhof; one stepdaughter, Virginia Rauhof Powers; three brothers, Roger Graybeal, Fred "Dooley" Graybeal and Austin Graybeal; and four sisters, Vanessa Graybeal, Mamie Shull Graybeal, Lucy Graybeal Lovill and Ruby Graybeal Norris.

Survivors include one brother, Frank Graybeal of Sumter; one sister, Pearl Farthing of Boone, N.C.; three grandchildren, Dolores Powers Fredericks of Johnson City, William A. Powers of El Paso, Texas, and Michael Bruce Powers of Richmond, Va.; 10 great - grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great - nieces, great - nephews; and two great - great - grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Rauhof will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of Salem Presbyterian Church, Limestone, with the Rev. Brian Wyatt officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Salem Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the church sanctuary.

Appalachian Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 800 E. Watauga Ave., Johnson City, Tenn., is serving the Rauhof family.

AGNES L. PRUESSING

Agnes L. Pruessing, 80, widow of Charles "Speed" Pruessing, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at her home.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter and Hoover - Hall Memorial Chapel of Alexis, Ill.

LOUISE W. COKER

TURBEVILLE - Louise W. Coker, age 81, died Nov. 21, 2003, at her home, after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late Janie Olivia Welch. She was retired from Elkay Industries as a seamstress, a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, The Miriam Morris Sunday School Class, and the Marion Gamble Circle.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Ervin L. Watts, Horace Coker and Heyward Coker Sr.; a son, Charles Watts; a daughter, Doris W. Markle; and a brother, J.W. Welch.

Surviving are daughters, Nell Harrington of Kingstree, Vivian Thigpen of Lake City, Nancy Mangrum of Manning and Irene Hardy of Turbeville; sons, Ralph Watts, Lavern Watts and Francis Watts, all of Turbeville, Heyward Coker Jr. of Columbia and Ray Floyd of Dobson, N.C.; a sister, Mary Williams of Wedgefield; a brother, Robert Odom of Sumter; 25 grandchildren; 46 great - grandchildren; 19 great - great - grandchildren; and a special friend, Mrs. Inez Green of Turbeville.

Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.

DOROTHY W. SMITH

BISHOPVILLE - Dorothy Williamson Smith, 76, wife of James Garland Smith, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Morven, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Jack Williamson and the late Nancy McColl Williamson. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She loved flowers and gardening. She was a loving wife, mama and grandma.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Randy Smith and his wife, Shery, of Bishopville; two daughters, Brenda Raley and her husband, Aaron, and Sandy Holloman and her husband, Johnny, all of Bishopville; her only granddaughter, Scotty Holloman Scurry and her husband, Trey; four grandsons, Josh Holloman, Kyle Raley, Ashley Smith and Brandon Smith; two sisters, Roberta W. Brigman of Cheraw and Diane W. Walls of Summerville; three brothers, Howard Williamson, Glenn Williamson and Ravenel Williamson, all of Cheraw; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Judy W. Hogan.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating.

Burial will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock - Elmore - Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 607 N. Main St., Bishopville.

FRANCIS O. STRANGE Sr.

Francis Oswald Strange Sr., 80, husband of 60 years to Gwendolyn Kolb Strange, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Henry N. Strange and the late Olive Haley Strange.

Mr. Strange was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and a former Little League Baseball coach. He was a retired first lieutenant with the U.S. Army and was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He served with the First Cavalry Division during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Francis Oswald Strange Jr. and wife, Kim, of Pinehurst, N.C.; two daughters, Carolyn Buchanan and husband, James, of Atlanta, Ga., and Claudia "DeeDee" S. Wright and husband, Randall, of Charleston; three brothers, Henry N. Strange of Concord, N.C., Harmon Cuttino Strange and Charles Sydney Strange, both of Sumter; five grandchildren, Sharon Lee Buchanan, James Marks Buchanan and wife, Elizabeth, Randall Stephens Wright, Megan Gwendolyn Wright and Brittany Nichole Strange; two great - grandchildren, Dwight Buchanan and Nicholas Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Strange.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Tony Metze officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one's choice.

ERNEST GASKINS

LAKE CITY - Ernest "Datter" Gaskins, 76, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003.

He was a son of the late Henry Gaskins and Elease Singletary Gaskins. He was a retired brick mason.

Survivors include one son, Ervin Graham of Ft. Myers, Fla.; five daughters, Ernestine Brown and Annie Petty of Waldorf, Md., Candy McFadden of Lake City, Sonia Fuller of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Betty McLone of Winston - Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Henry Gaskins Jr. of Boston, Mass., and Alfred Gaskins of New Haven, Conn.; and three sisters, Isabell Bowan, Hester Henry and Magalene Singletary, all of Boston, Mass.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Nettie's Temple Holiness Church, Peachtree Street, Lake City, with Junior Bishop Leroy Graham officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in U.S. National cemetery, Florence.

The family will receive friends at 341 W. Thomas St., Lake City.

Green's Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.
