COLUMBIA -- Lucinder McCants Moses, 76, widow of Burnice Moses, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born Dec. 11, 1927, in St. Charles, Lee County, she was a daughter of the late General McCants Sr. and Anna Brunson McCants.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Pamela Moses, 4095 3rd St., Mayesville, SC 29104.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIE MAE STUKES THOMPSON

MANNING - Evangelist Willie Mae Stukes Thompson, 55, wife of the late Rev. James Thompson Jr., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at 2950 Doc Naomi Road.

Born Feb. 13, 1948, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Willie "Budda" Stukes and Nettie Mae Bell Youngs Stukes.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2950 Doc Naomi Road, Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JOHN W. SERVANCE

MANNING -- Elder John Wesley Servance, 74, husband of Mrs. Hattie Mae Servance, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility, Summerton.

He was born June 6, 1929, in Silver.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of services.

WILLIAM F. CHANDLER

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- William Fredrick Chandler, 69, husband of Catherine Chandler, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in Newport News, Va.

Born May 10, 1934, in Ceshsa, Mass., he was a son of the late Royal Chandler and Mary Chandler.

The family will receive friends at the home, 231 Gibbons St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

SADIE BELL J. GIBSON

Sadie Bell Johnson Gibson departed this earthly life for her heavenly home on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on April 8, 1924, she was the firstborn and only child of the late Joseph and Sarah McCray Johnson Sr.

Mrs. Gibson was raised and educated in the Sumter community. She was a lifelong, faithful member of the St. Mark United Methodist Church. She was willing to share her gifts and talents with her church family whenever they were needed. She was employed by Sumter School District 17 for more than 30 years until her retirement on June 2, 1982. After her retirement, she became a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed sewing and creating beautiful garments and crafts for others to enjoy.

In 1947, she was married to James Gibson.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Johnson Jr.

She leaves to cherish precious memories her devoted companion of 30 years, Marcus Brown of the home; her nieces, Josephine Johnson Eady of Miami and Delma Johnson Ezell of Atlanta; seven half-sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Oswego Road, with the Rev. Telly Lynette Gadson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Robert Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Funeral procession will leave at 9 a.m. from the residence, 833 Weeks St., Sumter.

The family will receive friends at the home, 833 Weeks St.

THEOLA J. McKNIGHT

BALTIMORE -- Mrs. Theola June McKnight was born May 19, 1946, in Sumter County, the daughter of the late Mr. Lem June and the late Mr. Odessa Jones June. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County. As a young adult, she joined Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Dalzell.

She made her transition and departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Baltimore.

Survivors include four daughters, Deloris Haynes, Victoria Goody, Takeela Huntley, all of Baltimore, and Valarie (Cary) Oxendine of Sumter; one son, James Adams Huntley of Baltimore; three brothers, Herbert Lloyd (Lillie Mae) June, Walter Lem (Christine) June, both of Sumter, and Willie (Ann) June of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Albertha Briggs of Baltimore, Rovenia June-Dinkins, Betty June-Simmons and Patricia June (Joe) Washington, all of Sumter; and 15 grandchildren.

One brother, Robert Lewis June, and one sister, Virginia June-Singletary, preceded Mrs. Theola June McKnight in death.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alexander Nathaniel.

Burial will follow in Ebenezer Presbyterian Church cemetery, Dalzell.

The procession will leave from the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Lillie Mae June, 40 Rast St., Sumter, at 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Viewing will take place from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today and again from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Friday.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Lillie Mae June, 40 Rast St., Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LILLIAN T. GREEN

Mrs. Lillian Tindal Green, age 54, of Manning, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was the daughter of the late Alphonso and Obell Simon Tindal. She was the widow of Ben Green, Jr.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Tindal.

She attended Manning Training School, Manning. She lived in Detroit, Mich., for many years, where she worked for L.G. Man Power until her retirement. Upon the death of her husband, she returned to South Carolina.

She leaves to cherish her memories an adopted son, Tyrone Pack of the home; six brothers, Franklin (Janice) Tindal, Lorenzo (Cynthia) Tindal and Tony (Betty) Tindal, all of Manning, Alphonso (Regina) Tindal Jr. and Danny Tindal, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Raymond Tindal of Dannemova, N.Y.; four sisters, Betty Ann Tindal and Gloria Tindal, both of Manning, Debra (Anthony) James and Sylvia Kim Tindal, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of nieces and nephews; a special neice, Katrina Tindal; a special great-neice, Brittany Nix and a special friend, "Pompey"; one maternal aunt, Margaretta Thomas of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three paternal aunts, Lucille (Gerald) Washington of Sumter, Roberta Abraham of Eldersburg, Md., and Francis Richburg of Paxville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bobby McDonald. Final resting place will be the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service (1 p.m.).The family is receiving friends at the home, 2637 Boyd Road, Paxville community, Manning.

NORRIS P. YOUNG

Norris Plowden Young, 36, died Jan. 27, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 23, 1967, in Ft. Pierce, Fla., he was a son of Eugene T. Young and the late Flossie Plowden. He attended the public schools of Lee County and obtained his GED in 1989.

Survivors besides his father include one son, Norrese G. Ball of Sumter; 13 sisters, Juanita P. (Angelo) McGainey of Mayesville, Carolyn Young LeGrant, Brenda Young, Linda Ward, all of Sumter, Ivory (Hezekiah) Baker, Jackqueline (Donald) Reed, Alice (Elvis) Waite, Brenda (William) Newberry, Eugenia Young, April Young, all of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Gloria (William) Cooper of Orlando, Fla., Clarice Young and Angelina Lowder, both of Coca Beach, Fla.; 12 brothers, Michael Alphonso, Gordon Alphonso, Jeremiah Young, Wardell (Cynthia) Plowden, Eugene (Vivian) Plowden, Joseph (Joyce) Young, Cleon (April) Young, Derrick (Malanie) Young, all of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Arthur (Jackqueline) Plowden of Sumter, Randolph (Jackqueline) Young of West Palm Beach, Fla., Nathaniel Plowden of Lowell, Fla., and Anthony (Jewel) Young of New Orleans, La.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William T. Plowden; paternal grandmother, Ethel Young; three brothers, Ricky, Larry and Robert Young; and three uncles, Norris Young, Joseph Daniel and Leroy Plowden.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in The Parlor of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, with Evangelist Gloria Cooper officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 111 Hoyt St., Sumter.

FRED PLEASANT

Mr. Fred "Joe Louis" Pleasant was born April 9, 1939, in Sumter. He was the son of the late Mr. Anthony Tony Pleasant and Mrs. Sarah Pleasant Spencer.

He departed this earthly life for eternal life on Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

"Joe Louis, " as he was affectionately called by family and friends, attended the public schools of Sumter County. He also served in the U.S. Army. In his early years, he attended Bethel AME Church in Sumter.

"Joe Louis" was preceded in death by two daughters, Sarah Louise and Shirley Ann.

Those left to cherish his precious memories are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Pleasant of Sumter; one daughter, Ms. Cynthis Lorene Pleasant of Sumter; three sons, Mr. Fred Pleasant Jr., Mr. Steven Evand Pleasant and Mr. Bryant Pleasant, all of Sumter; a foster son, Mr. Leon Tomlin; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ola Mae (the Rev. M.G.) Walters, Ms. Susan Nathaniel of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Gloria (Alex) Gadson of Sumter; one brother, Mr. Anthony Tony (Annie Bell) Pleasant Jr. of Sumter; an adopted brother, the Rev. Jamie Pleasant of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends, all of whom join with the family in sharing the grief caused by this departure, but rejoice in his home going.

Wake services will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ricky Simmons.

Burial will be held Monday in the Florence National cemetery, Florence.

The funeral procession will leave the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Alex Gadson, 42 W. Patricia Drive.

The family is receiving friends at the same home.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

ROBERT J. EVANS

LYNCHBURG -- Deacon Robert James Evans of Lynchburg was born March 15, 1929, to the late Elijah P. Evans and Hattie Goodman Evans in Lynchburg, and answered the call on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at his residence, 116 Elijah Lane.

He attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, he joined King Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he was ordained as deacon. Later he joined the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons, chorister of the senior choir, assistant superintendent of the church school and church section. Deacon Evans was a lifelong farmer and also worked for Lee County public schools as custodian and retired in July 2003 after 18 years of service. He was united in holy matrimony on Nov. 3, 1951, to Annie Mae Wilson Evans and this union was blessed with seven children.

He leaves to honor and cherish his memories his wife, Annie Mae Evans of the home; one son, Michael (Cindy) Evans of Lynchburg; four daughters, Carrie Evans, Edith Peterson and Diane Peterson, all of Lynchburg, and Linda (Leon) Givens of Bishopville; two brothers, Joseph (Lizzie) Evans of Bronx, N.Y., and Harry (Rebecca) Evans of Lynchburg; two sisters, Estell Logan of Paterson, N.J., and Lillie Mae Thompson of Lynchburg; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy D. Simmons, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Bethesda Memorial Gardens.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 116 Elijah Lane.

Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg is in charge of arrangements.
