VICTORIA T. DURANT

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Mrs. Victoria Tindal DuRant, 66, widow of Mr. Carroll B. DuRant, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Born March 21, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Cleveland Tindal and the late Mrs. Ethel Richburg Tindal. Mrs. DuRant attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from the Manning Training School. For a number of years, she was a member of the senior choir. Later she joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church, Manning. Victoria traveled extensively with her husband throughout his military career.

Survivors include two sons, Lemuel DuRant (Kim) of Tacoma, Wash., and Chris DuRant of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Cynthia DuRant of Nashville, Tenn., and Sharon DuRant Evans (Tony) of Cary, N.C.; four brothers, Admiral Tindal (Liza Ann) and Alonzo Tindal (Laverne), both of Manning, Cleveland Tindal (Sarah) of Baltimore, and Jimmy Tindal of Texas; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Tindal Brown (Albert) of Paxville; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Julia Lee Tindal Blanding.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church, Paxville Highway, with the Rev. Henry Presley and the Rev. Dr. Coakley Richburg officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Mamie Brown and Mr. Albert Brown, her sister and brother-in-law, 9675 Lewis Road, Paxville Highway, Manning.

CLYDE CONYERS

Clyde Conyers, 89, husband of Edith McCleary Conyers, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at his residence, 720 DesChamps Road, Sumter 29154.

Born Oct. 20, 1914, in the Privateer community of Sumter County, he was a son of the late Longton and Polly Jones Conyers. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. In his young life, he accepted Christ and joined the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. As a member, he served as financial chairperson of the trustee board for many years. He was active in the Sunday school and sang on the men's chorus. He was faithful and committed to the building of God's kingdom. He was founder and board member of the First Black Farmers Coop in Sumter County. He owned and operated a small farm in rural Sumter County and was recognized by the FFA and the Small Farmers Association for his outstanding accomplishments in agriculture.

Survivors besides his wife include his children, Bessie Clyde (Fred) Allen of Debary, Fla., Ben E. (Minnie) Conyers, Miriam (Johnnie) Roman, Elque (Violet) Conyers and Ray (Louise) Conyers, all of Sumter, Alvaretta (Jimmie) Bryson of Lexington, N.C., Wilmur Easter of Goldsboro, N.C.; one foster son, Julius (Mary) Brunson of Rochester, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, Gloria J. Conyers, Bryan Conyers, Trescott Conyers, Quentin Conyers, Adrain Leander Roman, Johnnie L. Roman Jr., Antionette Rogers, Bernadette Odom, Kimm Conyers, Yulonda Conyers, Dawaune Conyers, Dominique Easter and Dione Easter; eight great-grandchildren, Kevin Clyde Rogers, Kimbely Rogers, Rashid Odom, Chelsea Roman, Nigel Roman, Javon Conyers, Tyanna Brunson and Noah Lanier; two sisters, Esther Turner of Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., and Pauline Smith of New York City; five sisters-in-law, Minnie Ragins of Delair, N.J., Alice Newmuis and Edith McCleary, both of Sumter, Jannie McCleary of Philadelphia, and Jannie McCleary of Harrisburg, Pa.; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Louise Smith, Essie Geter, Gardenia Williams and Martha Pack; six brothers, Ben Conyers, Frank Conyers, William Conyers, Job Conyers, Haskell Conyers and Longton Conyers Jr.; one granddaughter, LaTonja Darnell Abram-Lanier; and one great-grandson, Marqueis Elque Conyers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Larry Weston, Ministers Carnes Duren and Irene Anthony.

Burial will be in Cain cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 720 DesChamps Road, Sumter.

FRANKIE M. HOUSE

Frankie Marie House died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 13, 1969, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Fannie House and the late Frankie Leonard House.

The family will receive friends at Cubbage Trailer Park, Lot No. 2, Dalzell.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

THELMA BREVARD

Mrs. Thelma "Tina" Leontyne Alston Brevard, 41, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.

She was born in Sumter County on Jan. 15, 1962, and was the 10th and youngest child of the late Thomas Alston Sr. and Mrs. Ida Mae Croom Alston.

"Tina" accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. Following her military travels, she returned to South Carolina and resumed her church affiliation. At Wayman, she was an active member of the young adult choir, Sunday School Class No. 5, Stewardess Board No. 3, first aid ministry, women's missionary society, church bus ministry, pastor's aide club, and an adviser to the Praise in Motion Dance Ministry.

Tina attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dalzell in 1980. During the elementary years, Tina was very quiet and studious. During high school, she continued to excel academically and also participated in the student council, chorus, Psych Circle, homecoming court, and was a member of the junior class board.

On Aug. 10, 1985, Tina was united in marriage to her longtime sweetheart, Captain Lawrence Clayton Brevard. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Allison Camille and Leah Kristen Brevard. As a loving and devoted wife, she supported her husband's military career with active participation in the Officer's Wives' Club and other military organizations. She was a faithful and loving mother who displayed total devotion to the care of her children. Among many other activities, Tina took pleasure in volunteering at their schools and chaperoning field trips. Prior to marriage, she was employed with Ingles and Piggly Wiggly Food Stores.

Lt. Col. Lawrence Clayton Brevard preceded Tina in death December 2000. In addition to her husband and parents, two brothers, Thomas Alston Jr. and Louis Alston, preceded Tina in death.

To cherish precious memories, Tina leaves two loving and beautiful daughters, Allison Camille and Leah Kristen Brevard of the home; six sisters, Katherine C. (John) Ford of Washington, D.C., Deloris A. Fraiser of Bayonne, N.J., Dorothy A (Larry) Addison of Rembert, Barbara A. Bell of Oglethorpe, Ga., Sandra A. (Leroy) Quick, and Nancy A. (Curtis) Pollard of Rembert; one brother, Edward (Alberta) Alston; godson, Andrae Alston of Dalzell; mother-in-law, Mozell Brevard (Fulton) Lockwood of Horatio; father-in-law, Sammie Taylor of Rembert; four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousin, and friends; and a very special friend, Isaac McLeod.

Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Chapter of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1247 Lake Murray Boulevard, Irmo, SC 29063.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wayman Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, pastor, assisted by Minister Michael Avin, Bishop Thomas C. Bell, the Rev. Eliza E. Black and the Rev. Charlie Howard.

The remains will be placed in the church from noon until the hour of service.

Burial will be in the Wayman Chapel AME Church cemetery, Sumter.

DENNIS D. PRESCOTT

Dennis Dale Prescott, 51, husband of Darlene Ridgeway Prescott, died Tuesday, Jan. 06, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 7, 1952, in Sumter, he was a son of Guy Henry Prescott and Louise Trimnal Prescott. He was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the board and the United Methodist Men's Club. He was also a member of the Still Hunting Club in the Concord Community and was employed by A & P Recycling.

Survivors besides his wife and parents include two daughters, Charlene P. Peyton and her husband, Josh, of Blythewood and Amanda L. Prescott and her fiancé, Jay Boykin, of Sumter; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William R. and Pauline V. Ridgeway; a brother, Phil L. Prescott and Torrie of Sumter; a sister, Teresa Sandifer and her husband, Bobby, of Sumter; a granddaughter, Jaydin B. Peyton; nine brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; 16 loving nieces and nephews; and 11 loving great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lee Phillips and the Rev. Jerry Watson officiating.

Burial will be in the Brunson cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gene Windham Jr., Walt Ridgeway, T.J. Ridgeway, Benji Sandifer, Chris Cole and Sammy Prescott.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lewis Chapel United Methodist Men's Club, members of the Still Hunting Club of the Concord Community, and Dr. Billy Clowney.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 495 Boots Branch Road, Sumter.

ASHWOOD -- Franklin D. "Frank" Cooper Jr., 64, husband of Cecelia Vaughn Cooper, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Lexington Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

ELEANORA M. WILSON

Mrs. Eleanora McBride Holmes Wilson, daughter of the late James McBride and Viola McBride, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Hopewell Health Care Center.

She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a lifelong member of the Olden Chapel UME Church of Sumter.

Her survivors include two daughters, Hattie Mae Bell of Sumter and Mazell Washington of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Robert Harvin of Tampa, Fla., and George Lowery (Mamie) of Pinewood; 51 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mrs. Dorothy Wortherly of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers and a son, Issac Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Olden Chapel UME Church with the Rev. Gloria S. Brown, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Bradford cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Ms. Hattie Mae Bell, 34 S. Washington St.

The staff of James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ALMA J. RHODES

DARLINGTON -- The Rev. Alma Jane Rhodes, 88, widow of Vernie Brunson and John Rhodes, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Medford Place.

Born May 16, 1915, in Sharon, she was a daughter of the late Berry and Mary Love Rainey. Under the tutelage of her parents, her spiritual growth began at an early age by joining the Baptist church in South Carolina and she was baptized at the age of 12. Upon moving to Baltimore, she became an active member of the Southern Baptist Church and sang on the adult choir. In the early '60s, she answered the call and became a minister. On Dec. 7, 1966, she became pastor of the Upper Jerusalem Temple Baptist Church, Baltimore, and remained there until retirement. After moving to Timmonsville in 2001, she became a member of Savannah Grove Baptist Church and remained active until her health deteriorated. As a wage earner, she worked as a cashier at a variety of dry cleaners in Baltimore and kitchen helper at the Woodburn Center, Department of Social Services in Baltimore. She received numerous awards and certificates from the Baptist Pastor's Conference of Baltimore, the Board of Christian Education of the Lott Carey Baptist Church and the Baltimore City Public Schools.

Survivors include three children, Timothy Rhodes and Keith Rhodes, both of Baltimore, and Iris Brunson Gladden of Timmonsville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Savannah Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., pastor, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Bruce F. Haskins. Burial will be in the National cemetery.

The body will be placed in the chapel of Savannah Grove Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Iris B. Gladden, 630 E. Main St., Timmonsville, SC 29161.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends may make donations to Savannah Grove Baptist Church, 2620 Alligator Road, Effingham, SC 29541, in memory of the Rev. Alma J. Rhodes.

Services will be announced by Fleming & Delaine Funeral Home of Manning.
