GUSTAVA G. SCALES

Elizabeth Gustava Green Scales, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Shiloh, she was a daughter of the late Walker Thomas Green and the late Lillian Black Green. Mrs. Scales was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Beuclare Chapter No. 20 Order of Eastern Star and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a retired bookkeeper with the Capitol Department Store.

Surviving are a son, John C. Scales of Longwood, Fla.; a sister, Della G. Fitzgerald of Sumter; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Walker Scales, and a brother, Nathaniel Green.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Burial will be private in the Sumter cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Beuclare Chapter No. 20 Order of Eastern Star, in care of Mrs. Anna Schulz, 627 Baldwin Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

EFFIE W. BELL

Effie Watterton Bell, 90, widow of James Kenneth Bell, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Greenville.

Born in Newport News, Va., she was a daughter of the late Arnold Harold Watterton and the late Effie Gill Watterton.

Mrs. Bell was a former member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was a current member of the First Church of God.

Surviving are a son, Kenny Bell and wife, Maurica Hardy, of Valle Crucis, N.C.; a daughter, Carol Price of VanVleck, Texas; a sister, Doris Wyncoop of Sumter; and three grandchildren, Wayne, Patti and Michelle.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Florence National cemetery with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

EVAN M. SALISBURY

Evan Merwin Salisbury, age 74, beloved husband of 43 years to Eileen Marie Swank Salisbury, died on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Fargo, N.D., the son of the late Merwin Lincoln Salisbury and Ethel Farnsworth Salisbury. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and later retired as an auto mechanic from Bob Daniels Buick in Columbus, Ohio.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are two brothers, Alan D. Salisbury of Sumter and Wayne D. Salisbury of Roanoke, Va.; and very close friends, Pat and Kathy Ryan of Hilliard, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell D. Salisbury and Brian D. Salisbury.

No local services are planned. The family will be having a private memorial service at a later date in Minnesota.

Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2229, Sumter, SC 29151.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

KAILEY M. HUGHES

DALLAS -- Baby Kailey Madison Hughes died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Baylor Dallas Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 2003, in Dallas, she was a daughter of Sharon Williams and Willie Hughes.

The family will receive friends at the home of her grandparents, C.L. and Katie Williams, 55 Maxwell Ave., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ALLEN ANDERSON

Allen "Bubba" Anderson, 84, husband of Katie Carroway Anderson, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at his residence, 2440 Camden Highway.

Born Jan. 1, 1920, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Allen and Mary Anderson. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a farmer for many years until his retirement.

Survivors include one son, Harry L. (Louise) Anderson of Sumter; six daughters, Louise A. (Johnnie) Davis, Katie Mae (Robert) Boyd, Annette (Joe) Thompson, Margaret Johnson, Betty (Anthony) Harvin, all of Sumter, and Jannette (Keith) Johnson of Newark, N.J.; one special granddaughter, Lakisha Pack, who was reared mostly in the home; 21 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Martin; three sons, Henry Carraway, Allen T. and James A. Anderson; two sisters, Margaret Nickerson and Mary Geddings; and three brothers, Albert, James and Malichia Anderson.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. Lutrelle D. Rainey Sr., pastor, assisted by Elder Rebecca Barnes.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Churchyard cemetery, Dalzell.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Floral bearers will be the Missionary Society.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from his home, 2440 Camden Highway, Sumter.

The family will receive friends at his home, 2440 Camden Highway, Sumter.

PATRICK F. VELTRE

Patrick Frank Veltre, age 75, husband of the late Lillian Marguerite "Peg" Cole Veltre, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center of Sumter.

Mr. Veltre was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in Hillsville, Pa., a son of the late Bartolomeo and Rosa Rich Veltre. He graduated from Bessemer High School in 1946. He went on to college and graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. Air Force in July 1950 in which he served a 20-year tour of duty, serving during the Korean conflict and Vietnam and held posts as commander and conductor of various Air Force bands in the U.S. and overseas. On Oct. 27, 1956, he married his wife, Lillian M. "Peg" Cole. He was chief warrant officer upon retiring. Military decorations included The National Defense Medal, the Outstanding Unit Award, The Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Legion of Merit. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1970, he joined the music faculty of Sumter School District 2 and served as a band director for 20 years. He earned a master's of education degree from USC. He was a retired chief warrant officer with 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean and Vietnam conflict. Mr. Veltre retired from teaching in 1990, from SCCB on Dec. 11, 1994, and served as conductor emeritus off and on until May 2003.

Surviving are three sons, Johnnie Johnson and his wife, Alice, of Atlanta, Robert A. "Bob" Veltre and his wife, Darlene, of Sumter, and Joseph A. "Joe" Veltre and his wife, Nancy, of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Karen V. Stowe and her husband, Michael, of Sumter; six grandchildren, Dennis Veltre, Amanda Close, Aaron Veltre, Rebecca Close, Adam Veltre and Tony Veltre; and three great-grandchildren, Alex Veltre, Emily Veltre and Taylor Marie Veltre.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant grandchild, Patric Veltre; four brothers, Anthony Veltre, Carman Veltre, Joseph Veltre and Bartolomeo Veltre; and two sisters, Clara Scaraglino and Mary Persons.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Anne Catholic Church with Father Daniel J. Carboy, CSsR officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors in the St. Lawrence cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence on Pheasant Drive.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Anne Catholic Church, 216 E. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

FRANKIE M. HOUSE

Ms. Frankie Marie House, 34, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Sumter County on Jan. 13, 1969, to Mrs. Fannie House and the late Frankie Leonard House.

Ms. House was raised in the Sumter community and attended Sumter Baptist Temple for many years. She attended Sumter High School and was later transferred and graduated from Hillcrest High School, Dalzell, in 1988. She also attended Chris Logan Beauty College and was later employed as a dietician at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

"Frankie" stood by her convictions and was a person of her word. She was respected and loved by all her co-workers and supervisors. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.

In addition to her father, Frankie was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee House.

She leaves to cherish precious memories, a loving son, Christian Jamal Bennett; two sisters, Christine Williams Carmichael of Dalzell and Tarrie Rochelle House of Killeen, Texas; maternal grandmother, Mary Williams of Sumter; a grandfather, Albert Skipper of Horatio; fiancé, Tyrone Josey of Dalzell; three nephews, Steven Carmichael, Jaden Patrick and Trinity Watson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Plaza Church of Christ, Miller Road, Sumter, Dr. Vance S. Davis Sr., pastor.

The remains will be placed in the church from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Wise Drive, Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FRANKLIN D. COOPER Jr.

ASHWOOD -- Franklin D. "Frank" Cooper Jr., 64, husband of Cecilia Vaughn Cooper, died Tuesday, Jan. 06, 2004, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Binghamton, N.Y., and reared in the Syracuse, N.Y., area, he was a son of Evelyn Dotson Cooper and the late Franklin D. Cooper Sr.

Mr. Cooper was a member of Ashwood Baptist Church and sang in the church choir. He was a professional engineer and registered land surveyor in three states and was the president of F.D. Cooper Jr. Engineering Consulting and Registered Land Surveying. He was employed for 34 years at Fort Jackson as a civil engineer, was an officer in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Civil Engineers. He was a retired colonel of the United States Army Reserves. He completed a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering at The Citadel, some graduate work at Syracuse University, N.Y., a master's degree at the University of South Carolina, and post graduate courses at the University of South Carolina. He was an adjunct faculty member of Midlands Technical College, Columbia, and of Central Carolina Technical College, Sumter. He tutored students in the math, statistics, and physics and taught students how to prepare for the professional engineering and land surveying examination. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Among his many awards and certificates, he received the National Engineer of the Year Award; he completed the Army War College, and received the prestigious Nova Award for Engineers for research and development of a system for dewatering basements.

Survivors besides his wife include his mother of DeWitt, N.Y.; two sons, Franklin D. "Frank" Cooper III of Summerville and Brian Cooper; two stepsons, William Edward "Eddie" Hatfield Jr. of Columbia and David Anthony Hatfield of Florence; two stepdaughters, Sherry Hatfield Barnes and Melanie Hatfield Elmore, both of Sumter; a brother, David H. Cooper Sr. of Manlius, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jon Luke Harris officiating.

Burial will be in the Ashwood Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1191 Lake Ashwood Road.

Memorials may be made to the Lee County EMS, P.O. Box 929, Bishopville, SC 29010 or to Ashwood Baptist Church, 1075 Lake Ashwood Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Daphne Amerson Cousar, widow of Bobby Cousar, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at her home.
