JOANN E. SMITH

Ms. Joann E. Smith was born Dec. 16, 1957, in Sumter, the daughter of Mr. Leon S. Smith and Ms. Vermell Lewis Smith.

On Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, she peacefully entered into eternal rest at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter, after an illness.

She was educated in the public schools of Newport News, Va., and graduated from Sumter High School in 1976. She was a devoted member of The Church of God by Faith in Sumter. She was formerly employed by Madison Industries.

Surviving are her mother, Ms. Vermell Lewis Smith of Sumter; her father, Mr. Leon Stevenson Smith and his wife, Dorothy Smith, of Newport News, Va.; one son, Mr. Joshua Jerome (Quowdolyn) Smith of District Height, Md.; two daughters, Miss Queline Gracie Smith and Mrs. Andrea Nicole (Eric) Wilson, both of Sumter; two brothers, Mr. Keith Smith of Alaska and Steven Smith of Raleigh, N.C.; five sisters, Mrs. Maggie Leola Okola and Ms. Cheryln R. Ballot, both of Rochester, N.Y., Ms. Jacqueline E. Davis of Broken Arrow, Okla.; Felicia Brown and Cynthia Stevenson of Newport News, Va.; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at The Church of God by Faith, Atlantic Avenue, Sumter, with Elder James Lucas, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Senior Lewis, and eulogy by the Rev. Dewey Lane. Burial will follow in Bradford cemetery.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. today for a wake service and at other times at the home, 170 Shannon Ave., Sumter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

LAWRENCE F. SHEROD

SUMMERTON -- Lawrence Fredrick Sherod, 50, husband of Elloree Harvin Sherod, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 21, 1953, in Alcolu, he was a son of Mary Lou Sherod Fortune and the late John Felder and stepson of Isaac Fortune. He received his education in the public schools of New York, N.Y.

Survivors besides his wife, Elloree H. Sherod of the home, include one son, Vernon Harvin of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Raunette Harvin of Sumter; six brothers, Charles Sherod of Newport, N.C., John (Tela Jo) Felder Jr. of Gaffney, Eugene (Darlene) Felder of Manning, Gregory (Jenny) Felder of Newport News, Va., Anthony (Carolyn) Felder of Florence and James (Carnetha) Felder of Lynchburg; two sisters, evangelist Gloria (Elder Joseph) Young and Artrelle (Michael) Felder, both of Manning; and one step-grandchild.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church, Huggins Street, Manning, with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating, assisting Minister Jonathan Blackwell and evangelist Gloria Young.

Burial will be in Reeseville AME Churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 1097 Jim Ross Road, Summerton.

BETTY F. GALLOWAY

Betty F. Galloway, 69, wife of Robert Eugene Galloway Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Francis Walker Fickling and the late Thelma Troublefield Fickling. She was a member of Harmony Church. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Survivors besides her husband include four sons, Robert E. "Bobby" Galloway Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Sumter, Francis L. "Frank" Galloway and his wife, Jennie, of Fort Mill, H. Dale Galloway and his wife, Cathy, of Sumter, and Ronald J. "Jeff" Galloway of Summerfield, Fla.; two brothers, James A. "Jimmy" Fickling and Frank W. "Smokey" Fickling, both of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Harmony Church with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter cemetery.

Nephews and men of Harmony Church will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 610 Westfield Court.

Memorials may be made to Harmony Church, P.O. Box 1878, Sumter, SC 29151.

HALLIE J. RICHARDSON

On Jan. 3, 2004, at Hopewell HealthCare Center, Mrs. Hallie James Richardson, 95, departed this earthly life to enter an eternal place of peace.

Born in Sumter, on Oct. 29, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin and Rebecca Sharpe James. She was married to the late Johnny Richardson.

Mrs. Richardson began her Christian journey at the Beulah AME Church. The remainder of her life was spent as a faithful member of St. John Holiness Church for more than 50 years. She served her church in the following capacities: assistant pastor, deaconess, missionary, secretary, gospel choir, member of the Prayer Band, and Mother of the Church.

Mother Richardson attended the public schools of Sumter County. She was the epitome of motherhood for not only her own children, but for every child she came in contact with. Mother Richardson was a role model as a strong Christian woman who had many talents -- seamstress, gardening, cooking, caregiver, raising her children and grandchildren. She was totally committed to God and her family, and she served both well.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Johnny Richardson; a daughter, Henrietta "Eartha Lee" Richardson; three sisters, Maggie Dodson, Martha Ford and Lubirdie James; and three brothers, Phelp James, Stephen James and Robert James.

She leaves to cherish precious memories, two daughters, Johnnie Mae Colclough of Baltimore and Shalon Richardson of Sumter; one son, Edgar James of Virginia; one sister, Rosa Johnson of Washington, D.C.; one sister-in-law, Mamie Meriweather of Baltimore; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, church family, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at noon Saturday at St. John Holiness Church, Sumter, with Joe Mack, pastor, assisted by Assistant Pastor Stephen James and evangelist Barbara Brockington.

Interment will be in the St. Paul AME Church cemetery, Plowden Mill Road, Sumter.

The family will leave the residence, 225 Myrtle Beach Highway, at 11 a.m.

SYLVESTER McLAUGHLIN

BALTIMORE -- Sylvester McLaughlin, 30, husband of Dena Murry, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1973, in Sumter, he was a son of Aminell McLaughlin and grandson of Ozzie Bell Dickey. He attended the public schools of Maryland. He was employed by America Wood Molding Co.

Survivors include two sons, Daquan and Davon McLaughlin, both of Maryland; one daughter, Katlin McLaughlin of Maryland; two brothers, James McLaughlin and Alexander McLaughlin, both of Maryland; one half-brother, Jeffrey McLaughlin of Sumter; one sister, Carolena McLaughlin of Maryland; two half-sisters, Josie (William) Nickens and Michelle (Paul) McLaughlin of Sumter; two aunts, Flora Bell Epps and Odena Epps of Sumter; and one uncle, Lee Ernest Dickey of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Mae Dickey.

The remains will be placed in the church from 11 a.m. until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at noon at Asbury United Methodist Church, Shiloh, with the Rev. Cannon.

Burial will be in Goodman cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Ozzie Bell Dickey, Route 1, Box 1425, Pudding Swamp Road, Shiloh, at 11:45 a.m.

The family will receive friends at the home of his grandmother.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MARCUS X. KING

Baby Marcus Xavier King died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

Born Jan. 5, 2004, at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va., he was a son of Kerensa Jaylene King.

Survivors include his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frankie King Sr.; one aunt; one uncle; great-grandparents; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Smith cemetery, Cane Savannah Road.

The family is receiving friends at the home of the mother, Kerensa J. King, 380 Curtis Drive, Sumter 29153.

HAZEL JACKSON Jr.

GABLE -- Mr. Hazel "Junior" Jackson Jr., 63, husband of Celian Brown Jackson, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at 1287 U.S. 301, Gable.

Born June 18, 1940, in the Goodwill section of Sumter County, he was a son of the late Hazel Jackson Sr. and Ella Mae Rhodes Jackson. He received his education in the Melina Parochial School and Clarendon County. During his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Melina Presbyterian Church, where he served as a member of the trustee board, board of deacons and a member of the men's council. He was also a member of Golden Gate No. 78 of Free and Accepted Masons.

Survivors besides his wife, Celian B. Jackson of the home, include two sons, Marshall Edward (Tonya) Jackson of Sumter and Earl (Lanell) Brown Jr. of New Zion; one daughter, Linda Jackson of Darlington; a granddaughter he reared as his own, Tia Brogdon of Darlington; one brother, King David (Geraldine) Johnson of Sumter; two sisters, Sarah Mae Ceasar and Leona Coleman, both of New York City; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two children.

A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church, Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Jerome McCray assisting.

Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 1287 U.S. 301, Gable.

ALEXANDER STEVENSON Jr.

Alexander Stevenson Jr., 79, widower of Velma Coots Stevenson, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he was a son of the late Alexander Stevenson Sr. and the late Lovena McClaren Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.

Surviving are a son, the Rev. Scott Alexander Stevenson and wife, Melissa Gillespie Stevenson, of Columbia; a daughter, Laura Louise Stevenson-Woods and husband, Roger Woods, of Summerville; a sister, Lovena "Ginger" Stevenson of Woodbridge, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Mary Joy Stevenson and Kaitlyn Renee Stevenson.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Dorchester Memory Gardens in Summerville at 4 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 27 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150.
