BETTY ANN TILTON

MANNING -- Betty Ann Tilton, 57, wife of Roy Patrick Tilton Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born April 21, 1946, in Manning, she was a daughter of James Wesley and Stella White Rhodus.

Surviving are her husband of Manning; three sons, Roy P. Tilton Jr., Robert James Tilton and Donald Eugene Tilton, all of Manning; two sisters, Margaret Sinner of Columbia and Betsy Barker of Manning; two brothers, Donnie Rhodus of Columbia and Ashley Rhodus of Manning; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Stephen Bowe will officiate.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning prior to the funeral service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES T. BROWN

ORANGEBURG -- James Thomas Brown, 23, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg with burial at Memorial Park cemetery in Orangeburg.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

AURELIA D. BYRD

Aurelia "Weebee" Crawford Diggs Byrd, 73, widow of the Rev. Stonewall Jackson Byrd Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 9, 1930, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. William Crawford Diggs and Aurelia Meta Diggs. Aurelia was educated in the South Carolina public school system. She completed her elementary education at the former Providence Elementary School, which was located in Dalzell. Upon completion of elementary school, she moved to Greenville into the home of her sister, the late Geneva Young, to complete her high school education. Aurelia attended Sterling High School in Greenville, graduating in 1949. She attended post secondary school and became a licensed cosmetologist in 1952. She married the late Rev. Stonewall Jackson Byrd in 1954 and moved to California to make her home. After the untimely death of her beloved husband in 1957, she returned to South Carolina to be with her family and friends.

It was in Greenville that God first revealed her musical gift. She began her walk with God at an early age and was baptized at Springfield Baptist Church, Greenville. She remained active at Springfield Baptist Church until relocating to California. After returning home to South Carolina, she immediately began to serve in Hopewell Baptist Church as the church musician. She served as a member of the gospel choir, senior choir, and Young Women's Association (YWA) and continued to serve religiously until God saw fit to call her home.

Survivors include two sons, Elder Frank C. (Maggie) Byrd of Virginia Beach, Va., and Robert R. Byrd of Fayetteville, N.C.; four brothers, Theodore Diggs of Florida, Ransom (Mary) Diggs of Virginia Beach, Va., Eleazer (Rosa Lee) Diggs of Rembert and Samuel J. (Minnie) Diggs of Sumter; one sister, Annie Lee (George) McCoy of Rembert; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stonewall Jackson Byrd Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Hopewell Baptist Church, S.C. 441, Dalzell, with the Rev. Clarence Hilton Jr., pastor, assisted by Dr. Derrie L. Grant, senior pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Sumter; Dr. Lewis W. Walker, former pastor of Hopewell Baptist Church; Elder Frank C. Byrd; and Dr. Burnell T. Williams, senior pastor of One Accord Worship Center, Chesapeake, Va.

Burial will be in Hopewell Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Dalzell.

Pallbearers will be trustee board.

Floral bearers will be missionary society and Young Women's Association.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of her sister, Annie Lee McCoy, 5605 Old Camden Road, Rembert.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Annie Lee McCoy, 5605 Old Camden Road, Rembert.

CLAUDE STOKES

Claude Stokes, 46, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 1, 1957, in Macon, Ga., he was a son of Maron Thomas Stokes and the late William Wines. He was a member of Mount Sinai AME Church in Lynchburg. He was employed by Lowe's Improvement of Sumter and Turbeville Correctional Institution until his health failed.

Survivors besides his mother include his loving and devoted companion, Stathier Henry of the home; one daughter, Barbara Michelle Stokes of San Antonio; one stepdaughter, Delicia Henry of the home; three sisters, Maxine Kennedy, Carrie Stokes and Beatrice (Larry) Williams, all of Macon, Ga.; four brothers, James Stokes, David Stokes, Marcus Stokes and Lewis (Martha) Thomas, all of Macon, Ga.; father-in-law, Ivory McKnight Jr. of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Anita (Nathaniel) Wilson, Gwendolyn (George) Copeland, both of Sumter, Lisa Edmond of Wedgefield and Michelle (Absolum) McFadden of Rembert; one brother-in-law, Ivory (Stephanie) McKnight III of Myrtle Beach; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Mt. Sinai AME Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Alfred Bradley, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Samuel Elliott and Chaplain George Windley. Burial will be in Florence National cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence of Gwendolyn Copeland, 925 Holly Drive, Sumter 29154.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID CANTY

David Canty, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born July 18, 1947, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Tal Johnson and Janie Canty.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 108 Brand St., Sumter 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

HARRY BRYAN

COLUMBIA -- Funeral Mass for Harry Randolph Bryan, 82, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Monsignor Charles Rowland officiating. Farewell Prayers and Final Commendations will be in St. Lawrence cemetery in Sumter at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday with rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Bryan, husband of the late Nettie Marlow Lindsay Bryan, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late William Alfred and Catharine Moses Bryan. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was the first director of the Sumter Recreation Department, the South Carolina Mental Health Association and the South Carolina Commission on Aging. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Surviving are his sons, Harry R. Bryan Jr. of Asheville, N.C., Edward D. Bryan of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Wilson W. Bryan, M.D., of Rockville, Md.; daughters, Judy Lindsay Bryan Brown of Potomac, Md., Nancy Catharine Bryan of Myrtle Beach; brother, James C. Bryan of Columbia; sisters, Abbie B. Turner of Columbia and Andrena "Dee" B. Doran of San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

TURBEVILLE -- Junie Strickland Floyd, 70, widow of Napoleon Ollie Floyd, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the home of her son, Chris Floyd, 914 Wisteria Way, Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

EARNELL WOODS

Mr. Earnell Woods, of 1530 Britton Road, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at his home.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Glenda Montgomery, 1490 Woods St., Sumter.

Funeral service is incomplete and will be announced later by Community Funeral Home.

BOBBY S. JENNINGS

Bobby Sylvester Jennings, 51, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1952, in Sumter County, he was a son of Clara Jennings. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.

Survivors include two brothers, Larry Jennings and Raymond Jennings, both of Sumter; and six sisters, Mabelle (Melvin) Jennings McLeod, Annie Mae Johnson, Berinell Jennings, Emma Fulton, Patricia Hudson, all of Sumter, and Lucille (Harry) Dixon of Fayetteville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Clara Mae Jennings; and his oldest nephew, Clarence Jennings.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson Sr., pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Memorial Garden, Sumter.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his sister, Mabelle Jennings McLeod, 4575 Dubose Siding Road, Sumter.

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Baby Kailey Madison Bethany Hughes died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Baylor Dallas Hospital, Dallas.

Born Nov. 15, 2003, at Baylor Grapevine Hospital, Grapevine, she was a daughter of Sgt. Willie C. Hughes and Sharon Denise Williams.

Survivors besides her parents include her maternal grandparents, C.L. and Katie G. Williams of Sumter; paternal grandparents, Willie and Diane Hughes of Winston Salem, N.C.; one aunt, Jennifer W. (Leonarde) Cain of Columbia, S.C.; one uncle, James Williams of Sumter; four first cousins, Justin, Lendrianna, Cameron and Chance, all of Columbia; six grand-aunts; seven grand-uncles; godparents, Angela and Michael Thompson, Shanita Hubbard of Yonkers, N.Y., and Wayne Madhlangobe of Irving, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Cathedral Church with Bishop Sammy Smith, pastor, assisted by Elder William Harriston.

Burial will be in Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery, Summerton.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her grandparents, C.L. and Katie Williams, 55 Maxwell Ave., Sumter.

LEROY BOYD

BISHOPVILLE -- Leroy Boyd, 78, of 504 Calhoun St., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at McCoy Nursing Center.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Bennie and Lattie Boykin Boyd. He attended the schools of Lee County. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and was a member of Lucknow Masonic Lodge No. 324. Mr. Boyd retired from Reeves Brothers Inc.

Surviving are his wife, Luerina Boyd; two daughters, Maec (William) Davis of Columbia and Eva (Marion) Durant of Bishopville; three sons, Edward (Janice) Boyd of Columbia, Ronald and Curtis Century of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Louise Moses of Washington, D.C., and Lottie Mae Smith of Marion; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at noon.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Eva Durant, 329 Kings Ave., Bishopville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the RELAY FOR LIFE, The Opera House, 109 N. Main St., Bishopville, SC 29010.
