BISHOPVILLE -- Mrs. Eliza Charles Rembert, widow of Mr. Charlie Rembert, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

She was born in Lee County.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Williams, 52 Moses Road (off Calvary Church Road), Bishopville.

Services will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home of Bishopville.

WALTER WASHINGTON

Mr. Walter Washington, husband of Mrs. Ruth H. Washington, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1935, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Henry and Georgia Washington Herrington.

The family will receive friends at 33 S. Blanding St., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

HALLIE O'MARIE T. WAY

MANNING -- Hallie O'Marie Tarleton Way, 78, wife of Deacon John Edward Way, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 7, 1925, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Butler Julian and Hallie Stokes Tarleton. She received her education in the Clarendon and Sumter County school districts. At an early age, she joined the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Usher Ministry, Sunday school teacher, president of the L&H Club, member of the Deaconess Ministry and other various committees. After 15 years of service, she retired from Campbell Soup. She attended the Paxville Community Development Center, where she was a member of the Senior Citizen Program and served as a foster grandparent.

Survivors besides her husband include six children, Adrinna L. Buckman of New York, N.Y., Edward G. Way of Denver, Colo., Phyllis Way of Sumter, George B. (Mary) Way, Tarleton (Loretta) Way, both of Paxville, and Charlotte "Rita" Nesbitt of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Barry, Kemet, Donyale, Robert, Dwight, Alonzo and Antwaun "Twanie;" nine great-grandchildren, Todd, Michael, Sheena, Courtney C., Courtney G., Kibwe, Lillian, Dwight Jr. and Desmond; one great-great-grandchild, Makkah; one aunt, Tallie Stokes of Manning; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Vashti Singleton, Louise Houston and Dorothy Blackwell; and two brothers, William Butler Tarleton and John Richard Tarleton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Roosevelt McFadden, E.L. Sanders and Richard Dyson.

Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 12049 Pinewood Hwy. (Paxville Highway), Manning, SC 29102.

EARNEST E. WOODS

Mr. Earnest Earnell Woods, 88, of 1530 Britton Road, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at his home.

He was the son of the late Mr. Peter Gaymon Sr. and Ms. Janie Woods and the stepson of Mrs. Elizabeth Gaymon Prince. He was born in Sumter County, on Nov. 3, 1915. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a lifelong member of Mulberry Baptist Church. Earnest was united in holy matrimony to the late Mrs. Gertrude Johnson and was a loving father of four children.

He leaves to cherish, honor and carry on his memory three sons, Raymond Woods Sr. and his wife, Celestine Myers Woods, Jimmy Green and his wife, Plummie Green, both of Sumter, and Louis Charles (Dorothy) Woods of New Jersey; one daughter, Elvira Washington of Sumter; four brothers, Pete (Essie Mae) Woods and Ulysess Gaymon, both of Sumter, Peter (Kimmie) Gaymon of Detroit, Mich., and James T. (Martha) Gaymon of Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, Delphenia (Erin) Gordon, Alice (Abraham) Champagne, Mary Ann Gaymon and Sadie Sharpe, all of Sumter, and Evelyn Gaymon of Wilmington, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Woods was preceded in death by a son, Earnest Woods Jr.; one brother, Robert Woods; three sisters, Louise Douglas, Marie Tomlin and Lorie Hampton.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles H. Davis officiating, assisting by the Rev. O.S. Scott, the Rev. Dr. Emerald Glover Jr. and Minister James Prothro. Burial will follow in Mulberry Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Glenda Montgomery, 1940 Woods St., Sumter.

Community Funeral of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE MAE FARMER

Willie Mae Farmer, 81, widow of David Farmer, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William and Agnes Mae Butler Samuel.

The family will receive friends at the home, 734-A Branch St.

Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

MARIE JONES

Marie Jones, 45, wife of Matthew Jones Jr., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1958, in Sumter, she was a daughter of James Drayton Sr. and Inez Porcher Drayton.

The family will receive friends at the home, 900 David Austin Road, Wedgefield.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

NORMAN RAGIN

Mr. Norman Ragin, age 89, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility, Silver.

Born in Summerton, he was a son of the late June Ragin and Mary Richardson Ragin. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories a special devoted cousin, Mary Ragin Singleton of Summerton; and a grand-nephew, Ronnie McFadden of Manning; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with Rev. Capers, pastor, officiating. Final resting place will be the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his cousin, Mary Ragin Singleton, 1197 Clifton Road, Summerton.

Professional services entrusted to Dyson's Home for Funerals of Summerton.

DAVID CANTY

FLORENCE -- David Canty, 56, died Jan. 14, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born July 18, 1947, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Tal and Janie Fleming Canty. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School. He furthered his education at Morris College, where he received a liberal arts degree. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a substitute teacher for Sumter County School District 2 and later for Zimco.

In his youth, he attended Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four children, Latonja D. James, Kevin T. Canty, both of Sumter, Keith D. Dukes of Manning, and Sade Richardson of Woon, R.I.; two sisters, Annette Johnson and Janett (Joseph) Johnson, both of the home; four grandchildren; a special friend, Ruth Jackson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Rosetta Canty.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Wilson, Pastor, officiating. The Revs. Eliza E. Black and Randolph Black will assist. The family is receiving friends at the residence, 108 Brand St. in Sumter.

Job's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

VICTORIA JENKIN SLATER

BISHOPVILLE -- Victoria J. Slater, 64, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Herman Jenkins Sr. and Naomi Spann Jenkins.

She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Betty Jean Bradley, Mary Louise Slater (Tony), and Deloris Nelson (Bernard), all of Bishopville; two sisters, Essie Mae Moses (Tony) of Bishopville and Eva Mae Monroe (Thomas) of Englewood, N.J.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one uncle and four aunts.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Holland officiating. Burial will be in McCutchen cemetery. The family is receiving friends at 566 Maple Drive, Bishopville.

Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD DALE TROUBLEFIELD

CAMDEN -- Richard Dale Troublefield, 60, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Kershaw County Medical Center.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Carlisle S. Troublefield and the late Llewelyn Broadway Troublefield.

Richard served numerous public and private organizations wherever he could advocate for a better life for people with disabilities.

Survivors include five sisters, Helen Bailey of Camden, Julia Miles of Sumter, Betty Rae Doggett of Victorville, Calif., Corinne T. Avin of Sumter, and Shirley Dickson of Louisiana; nieces and nephews, Barbara Riggan and her husband, Eddie, Sandra Ives, and Dick Bailey all of Camden, and Michael Bailey of Charlotte, N.C.; and a number of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with Dr. Ray Wade officiating.

Burial will be in the Ashwood Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to any county Disabilities and Special Needs Board and Foundation.

MARY BENNETT FRANK

SUMMERTON -- Mary Bennett Frank, 73, widow of the late Joseph Frank, died Jan. 13, 2004 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 6, 1930, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Wash Bennett Sr. and the late Daisy Johnson Bennett. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Liberty Hill AME Church. In later years, she became a member at Mt. Ararat Baptist and St. Matthew Pentecostal Holiness of N.Y. serving on the Nurses Board and Church Mother. She reaffirmed her faith at Liberty Hill AME Church of Summerton. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Joseph Frank and this union was blessed with six children.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph Nancy Frank of Long Island, N.Y., Ulysses Frank of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Samuel (Loraine) Frank of Greensboro, N.C.; three daughters, Daisy Frank, Martha (Bernard) Richburg, both of Summerton, S.C., and Mary Frank of Rochester, N.Y.; three sisters-in-law, Elouise Bennett of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary Montegomery of North Carolina, and Bertha Boat Wright of Davis Station, S.C.; two brothers-in-law, Troy Lee Frank of Panola, S.C., and Aaron Frank of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Road in Summerton, at 2 p.m. Monday. Services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Melvin J. Caspers, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1060 Kephart Lane in Summerton.

King Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

MATTIE DORIS JENKINSON LOWERY

After a joyful and fruitful life of 75 years, Mattie Doris Jenkinson Lowery of Manning, widow of Chester LaVerne (Bob) Lowery, departed this life on January 16, 2004, and entered her heavenly home.

Born near Pinewood Oct. 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Marion Delmar and Mattie Broughton Jenkinson. She lived in Summerton for most of her life, and was a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother who was totally devoted to her family. In addition to being a homemaker, she held a variety of jobs outside the home, including providing homemade lunches for Clarendon Hall students during the early years of the school. Mrs. Lowery also worked in banking and, along with her husband, owned and operated the Garden City Supermarket at Garden City Beach for a number of years.

Left to cherish her precious memories are two sons, Robert L. (Bobby) Lowery and his wife, Elaine, of Sumter and Mark J. Lowery and his wife, Byrlene, of Summerton; three daughters, Jeannie L. Wilson and her husband, Tommy, of Alcolu, Patti L. Odom and her husband, Les, of Sumter, and Suzy L. Slice and her husband, Jim, of McDonough, Georgia; seventeen grandchildren, Jimmy Lowery, Danny Lowery, John Lowery, Donald Lowery, Mark Lowery, Jr., Kim Lowery, Jill W. Hickson, Reese Wilson, Cameron Wilson, Neil Masincupp, Ginger M. Leeman, Becky M. Marlowe, Malachi Slice, David Slice, Jimbo Slice, John Slice, and Joseph Slice; eight great-grandchildren, James Lowery, Maggie Lowery, Michael Lowery, Sarah Lowery, Jacob Lowery, Treston Lowery, Lily Leeman and Emma Leeman; two brothers, Johnny Jenkinson and Bill Jenkinson, both of Summerton; one sister, Betty J. Keels of Pinewood; and one sister-in-law, Ida E. Jenkinson of Summerton.

One brother, M. Delmar Jenkinson, Jr., preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lowery chose to donate her body to the USC School of Medicine in Columbia. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, at Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Benjamin T. Barwick, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Johnny Jenkinson, Furse Road, Pinewood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; Harvin Clarendon County Library; or a charity of one's choice.
