IRVING RUTLEDGE DUKES Sr.

MARION -- Irving Rutledge Dukes Sr., 85, husband of Sarah R. Dukes, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Marion County Medical Center.

Born in Orangeburg County, he was a son of the late Morgan Fletcher Dukes and the late Molly Wolfe Dukes.

He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was retired as a manager from Coca-Cola in Camden.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Irving R. Dukes Jr. of Lancaster; a daughter, Julie D. Roland and her husband, Larry R. Roland, of Marion; four grandsons, Ricky Roland and his wife, Sarah, J.D. Roland and his wife, Paula, Irving R. Dukes III and his wife, Crystal, and Eric Mullis; a granddaughter, Stefanie Lungsford; and five great-grandchildren, Tori Roland, Tyler Dukes, Peyton Lungsford, Stefanie E. Dukes, Joy Roland, and Lyndsi Roland.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Tuesday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with Dr. Alvin Shifflett officiating.

Burial will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 1436 Lucknow Road, Bishopville.

Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 3903 W. Highway 76, Marion, SC 29571, Lyttleton United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton St., Camden, SC 29020, or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 115 W. Church St., Bishopville, SC 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

MARTHA ANN GILFORD

BISHOPVILLE -- Martha Ann Gilford died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at her home, 206 Munnerlyn.

Born in Lee County on July 27, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Leila Gilford.

She attended the public schools of Lee County.

Surviving are three sisters, Rutha Mae Gilford, Sarah (John) Wright of Bishopville, and Rosa Lee Gilford of Elizabeth, N.J.; two brothers, Hoover Mack of Congers, N.J., and Maxie Lee Stuckey of Washington; one aunt, Maggie G. Boyd of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four nieces, Ruth Ann Gilford, Gloria Ann (Hermin) Rembert of Bishopville, Lisa Gilford and Monquie Gilford of Elizabeth; and six nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Square Deal Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rodney James officiating. Burial will be in the St. John cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE MAE FARMER

Willie Mae Farmer, 81, widow of David Farmer, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Mariner Health East.

Born on Oct. 2, 1922, in the Live Oak community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William and Agnes Mae Butler Samuel. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated and faithful member until her health failed.

Survivors include four sons, David (Elizabeth) Samuel, Frankie Lee (Mary) Samuel and Joseph (Cathy) Samuel, all of Sumter, and William (Darlene) Samuel of Pampano, Fla.; three daughters, Minnie Pearl Johnson of Paxville, Rebecca (Larry) Parrott and Agnes M. (H. McMillian Jr.) Jennings, both of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Phoebe L. Sweatte of Sumter; a best friend, Minnie Washington of Manning; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, James Ottis Randolph Jr.; a sister, Minnie McClain; and a stepbrother, Calvin Sweatte.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn officiating, assisted by Pastor Tommy Frederick, Pastor Angela Frederick and Minister Emma Jane Jones.

Burial will be in Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and floral bears will be granddaughters.

The funeral procession will leave the home, 734-A Branch St., at 1:20 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the home, 734-A Branch St.

Sumter Funeral Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE B. SINGLETON Sr.

Willie B. Singleton Sr., 71, husband of Louise Harrison Singleton, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the residence, 1893 Roche Road, Sumter.

Born May 11, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Allen and Rosa Webb Singleton James. He was a faithful member of Congruity Presbyterian Church, where he served faithfully as an elder, chairman on the trustee and Men Counciling Board and member of the senior and male chorus. He was also in charge of the cemetery and bus committee. For 17 years, he was employed by Santee Print. He was later employed by Carolina Furniture, where he retired after 27 years.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Kenny Singleton, Willie (Gladys) Singleton Jr., Leon W. (Ruthie) Singleton, Arthur (Sharon) Singleton, all of Sumter, and Tech. Sgt. Donald (Tracey) Singleton of Roy, Utah; two daughters, Shirley (Frank) Singleton and Gracie (Andres) Soto, both of Sumter; two sisters, Roberta Greene of Sumter and Evelena McFadden of Baltimore; one brother, Eugene (Mary) Singleton of Sumter; one uncle, Cotell (Runette) Webb; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Singleton of Baltimore and Anne Mae Singleton of Columbia; one brother-in-law, Robert (Mary) Harrison of New Hamden, Conn.; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a true friend, Douglas "Boss Man" Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walker Singleton and Anthony "Buck" Singleton Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Congruity Presbyterian Church.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday.

Officiating will be the Rev. William Jones, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Alvin Webb and Friendly Gadson.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1893 Roche Road.

ELIZA CHARLES REMBERT

BISHOPVILLE -- Mrs. Eliza Charles Rembert, widow of Mr. Charlie Rembert, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Carolina and Pauline Hunter Charles. Mrs. Rembert attended the public schools of Lee County and was a member of Gumspring Baptist Church in Bishopville, where she served on the missionary board and senior choir.

Survivors include four sons, Henry Lee (Dorothy) Thomas of Philadelphia, Joseph (Elouise) Thomas, Paul Thomas and Hermin L. Rembert, all of Bishopville; five daughters, Martha Felder, Pearlie Mae Alexander and Allison Rembert, all of Philadelphia, and Lela Mae (Joseph) Williams and Jeanette Thomas, both of Bishopville; one daughter-in-law, Anna Lee Rembert of Philadelphia; one sister, Mrs. Ella Charles Reese of Philadelphia; 47 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; and 42 great-great-grandchildren.

The deceased was preceded in death by her oldest son, Alfonzo Rembert.

Visitations will be held at the mortuary today from 2 to 5 p.m.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gumspring Baptist Church, Bishopville.

Burial will be in the Charles-Rembert cemetery, Bishopville.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Williams, 52 Moses Road (off Calvery Church Road), Bishopville.

Wilson's Funeral Home, 403 S. Main St., Bishopville, is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID CANTY

FLORENCE -- David Canty, 56, died Jan. 14, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born July 18, 1947, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Tal and Janie Fleming Canty. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School. He furthered his education at Morris College, where he received a liberal arts degree. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a substitute teacher for Sumter County School District 2 and later for Zimco.

In his youth, he attended Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four children, Latonja D. James, Kevin T. Canty, both of Sumter, Keith D. Dukes of Manning, and Sade Richardson of Woon, R.I.; two sisters, Annette Johnson and Janett (Joseph) Johnson, both of the home; four grandchildren; a special friend, Ruth Jackson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Rosetta Canty.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Wilson, pastor, officiating. The Revs. Eliza E. Black and Randolph Black will assist. The family is receiving friends at the residence, 108 Brand St. in Sumter.

Job's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

THEOLA JUNE McKNIGHT SMITH

NEW YORK -- Theola June McKnight Smith died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at her home in New York.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Lem and Odessa Jones June.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her brother, Herbert June, 40 Rast St., Sumter.

Plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

ROBERT "TEDDY" NELSON

ALCOLU -- Robert "Teddy" Nelson, 59, companion of Sadie Adger Hayes, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 1102 Tearcoat Road, Alcolu.

Born March 7, 1944, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Levi Nelson Sr. and Cardiver Frierson Nelson.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1102 Tearcoat Road.

LUCINDER M. MOSES

COLUMBIA -- Lucinder McCants Moses, 76, widow of Burnice Moses, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Providence Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1927, in St. Charles, Lee County, she was a daughter of the late General McCants Sr. and Anna Brunson McCants. She attended the public schools of Lee County. After graduating, she attended Morris College for two years. At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a member of Mt. Moriah AME Church, St. Charles. She later joined Mechanicsville United Methodist, where she was a member for more than 40 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan (John) Wright of Mayesville and Sylvia (Dewayne) Small of Columbia; three sons, Ronald (Pamela) Moses of Mayesville, Frank Moses of Sumter and Lancaster (Melody) Moses of Bishopville; two brothers, William "Bill" McCants of Mayesville and Cleo (Janie) McCants of Detroit; two sisters, Irene McCants of Detroit, and Ruth McCants of Mayesville; four sisters-in-law, Rebecca McCants of Jersey City, N.J., Essie McCants of Mayesville, Lillian McGill and Bertha Moses, both of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Georgia Mack; four brothers, General "Pig" McCants Jr., James "Son" McCants, Charlie "Bubba" McCants and Julius "Babe" McCants.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor. Burial will be in Mechanicsville Church cemetery.

The body will lie in state at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Pamela Moses, 4095 Third St., Mayesville, 29104.

JOHN B. BELL

ALCOLU -- John "Bobby" Benjamin Bell, 57, husband of Cleann Humes Bell, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 18, 1946, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Deacon Robert Bell Sr. and Margaret Frierson Bell. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1971. In his youth, he was baptized at Greenhill Baptist Church. He was presently employed with J.B. Hunt Trucking Co.

Survivors besides his wife, Cleann H. Bell of the home, include one stepson, Jerome Humes of Manning; one daughter, Oprah Lasean Darley of Manning; three brothers, James Bell, William Bell and Harold Bell, all of Sumter; one sister, Bertha Bell of Bronx, N.Y.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenhill Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. James Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson, the Rev. Willie C. Cooper and Minister Queen Darley. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1165 Ocean Road, Alcolu.
