DANIEL BENENHALEY

Daniel Benenhaley, 69, husband of Janie Lorine Hood Benenhaley, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Noah "Jessie" Benenhaley and the late Emma Oxendine Benenhaley. Mr. Benenhaley was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and was a retired civil service employee from Shaw Air Force Base. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Rhonda Carter and her husband, Robby, of Sumter and Nita Benenhaley of Sumter and her fiancé, Tony Newbern, of Macon, Ga.; and two brothers, Stanley M. Benenhaley of Sumter and William J. Benenhaley of Lexington.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Long Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Waddell, the Rev. Charles Carter and the Rev. Dr. Eleazer Benenhaley officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Clayton, Tim, Wilbur, Mike, Bobby and Steven Benenhaley.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Men's Sunday School Class of Long Branch Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robby Carter, 1737 Horne Road.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

BEATRICE T. HANCOCK

Beatrice T. Hancock, 85, daughter of Walter A.C. Hancock and Janette Willis, was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Spotsylvania County, Va., and died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Bea Hancock was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses Feb. 5, 1972, and had been faithful to Jehovah, diligent and dutiful in his service, right to the end. She, for a number of years, served as a full-time proclaimer of God's Kingdom and was well loved by her family, congregation members, and, in fact, all those who knew her. The many lives she has touched feel blessed by her acquaintance.

Bea, or "Grandma Hancock, " as everyone affectionately called her, is survived by one daughter, Nina Hancock; two granddaughters, Ifau Hancock and Miranda Hancock; two great-grands, Leon and Carey. She will be missed by them and a host of spiritual brothers, sisters and children.

The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 100 Lynam Road, Sumter. All who knew her are welcome to attend.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY FLOYD

Dorothy "Dot" Thompson Floyd, 79, wife of Alfred J. Floyd Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Sumter.

Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Edward and Callie Daniels Thompson. Mrs. Floyd was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church. She worked for Carolina Power & Light Co. for 29 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband of 57 years, Alfred J. Floyd Sr.; a daughter, Cindy Gailey and husband, Michael, of Asheville, N.C.; a son, Al Floyd Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Rachel and Andrew Gailey, and Trey and Brooks Floyd; three sisters, Hazel Boyce, Joyce Link and Cleo DuBose; four brothers, Harold Thompson, Hugh Ray Thompson, Murray Thompson and Julian Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janis Floyd; three sisters, Cecile Thompson, Caro Andrews and Eva Lee; and two brothers, Ed Thompson and Billy Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew E. Basham Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 35 Bland Ave.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

CARL H. WINKLES Sr.

Carl H. Winkles Sr., 88, widower of Myrtle Margaret Bessinger Winkles, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry Horace Winkles and the late Seppie Lee Holliday Winkles. Mr. Winkles was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and a member of the Men's Club. He was a retired salesman for Claussen's Bakery with 22 years of service and was the former owner and operator of Winky's Fabrics until his retirement. He was an honorary member of Riverside Hunting and Fishing Club and a member of Eastover Fishing and Hunting Club. He served on the board of trustees at the Sumter cemetery Association and as chairman of the Grounds Committee.

Surviving are one son, Carl H. Winkles Jr. and wife, Carol, of Murrells Inlet; two granddaughters, Kimberly Seay and Heather Young; one brother, Elbert Winkles of Santee; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sumter cemetery with the Rev. LaRue Cook officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Club of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 27 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150.

LILLIE B. HAMILTON

Lillie Baxter Hamilton, 85, widow of Jerry Hamilton, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Nazareth and Luetisher Tindal Baxter. She was educated in the public schools of Manning. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Beards Chapel AME Church in Charleston, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. For 50 years, she was employed as a seamstress.

Survivors include a devoted nephew, Richard Baxter of the home; one adopted daughter, Daisy Calhoun of Sumter; five sisters, Gladys (Ivan) St. Thomas and Rosa J. Fullard, both of Sumter, Luetisher Dickey of Lynchburg, Cardie M. Gamble of Baltimore and Jennie (Burk) Holliday of Slow Low, Ariz.; two brothers, Douglas (Katherine) Baxter of Lynchburg and Hayward (Ruth) Hough of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Ben Murray of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one adopted son, Lorenzo Hamilton; and one adopted daughter, Mary A. Baxter Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, U.S. 301, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor.

Burial will be in Elizabeth Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 66 N. Milton Road, Sumter.

CATHERINE S. JACOBS

Mrs. Catherine Sinkler Jacobs, wife of the late Mr. Charlie Jacobs, of 80 Jacobs Circle, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

LOIS M. CONYERS

Mrs. Lois "Shay" Montgomery Conyers, born Dec. 17, 1926, in Sumter, was the daughter of the late Mr. Ingram Montgomery and Mrs. Lois Budden Montgomery and the wife of Mr. Grant Conyers. At an early age, she joined La Gree AME Church and later moved her membership to Lincoln Memorial AME Church, where she was a member of the Usher Ministry. Mrs. Conyers received her education in the public schools of Sumter County. She was employed for many years as a belt maker for the Buckley Belt Co.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, God called Mrs. Conyers to rest.

Survivors include her husband, Mr. Grant Conyers of the home, Sumter; two sons, Mr. Grant Conyers III of Bronx, N.Y., and Mr. Richard Conyers of Sumter; two daughters, Mrs. Mary (Willie) Conyers Aaron of Jamaica and Mrs. Helen Conyers (James) of Bronx, N.Y.; four brothers, Mr. Willie Montgomery of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ingram (Geneva) Montgomery, Mr. Archie (Louise) Montgomery, Mr. Stanley (Gladys) Montgomery, all of Sumter, and Mr. Horace (Jessie) Montgomery of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Ms. Susan Conyers of Sumter, Mrs. Julia Timmons of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Sarah (John) Sanders of Tobyhanna, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lois Montgomery Conyers was preceded in death by four children and five siblings: one daughter, Jadina Conyers; three sons, Jacob, Phillip and Jerome Conyers; two sisters, Edith Pack and Easter Ballard; and three brothers, Matthew, Jacob and Pete Montgomery.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope UME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Leroy T. James, pastor, assisted by the presiding elder of the UME church, the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd.

Burial will follow in the New Hope Community cemetery.

Procession will leave the home, 3765 Ramsey Road, Sumter, at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Viewing will take place at noon today at the funeral home and again at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 3765 Ramsey Road, Sumter.

SHIRLEY ANN ALLSBROOK

Shirley Ann Allsbrook, 68, died, Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late David Glaser and the late Sara Adler Glaser. Mrs. Allsbrook worked for Food Services Inc. in the cafeteria of Bosch Inc.

Surviving are a son, Brett Catletti of Sumter; a sister, Estelle Waselinko of No. 11 Azaelea Mobile Home Park, Sumter; and a niece, Diane Waselinko of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Marie Catletti.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

WILLIAM E. BROADWELL

SPARTANBURG – William Edwin Broadwell, 78, of 618 Palmetto Street, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 24, 2004, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church with burial at The Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg in Sumter County at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 400 Dupre Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29302.

The family is at the home.

LILLIAN G. THAMES

Lillian Gunter Thames, age 83, wife of the late Shuford "Jack" Thames, went on to a better life Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Thames was born in Wagner, S.C., a daughter of James and Hassie Gantt Gunter. She was retired from Bradham Insurance and was co-owner of T & W Feed and Seed. She was a member of Lemira Presbyterian and was active in the church's Women's Circle.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth E. Thames of Aiken, S.C.; one daughter, Donna M. Thames of Sumter; three sisters, Gladys Windham and Mary Jordan, both of Charleston, S.C., and Delma Stewart of Mitton, Fla.; three grandchildren, Marie Lee, Kelly Mauldin and Rebecca Ward and four great-grandchildren, Chase Ward, Brandon Lee, Sam and Sawyer Mauldin.

She was preceded in death by Myrtie Gunter, Carolyn Galloway and one brother, James Gunter.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Basham and Rev. Walt Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Sumter Cemtery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Jan. 24, 2004, at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
