KATHARINE H. COWLES

Katharine Hurlburt Cowles, age 100, wife of the late William M. Cowles, died on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Morningside Assisted Living of Sumter.

She was born in Glastonbury, Conn., a daughter of the late Annie Phillips Nicholson and Everett Bradley Hurlburt. She was a registered nurse and worked as a visiting nurse for the Glastonbury School System. She was an avid gardener and was a member of the Azalea Garden Club and the Sumter Gallery of Art.

Surviving are two sons, John H. Cowles and his wife, Sharyl, of Sumter and William B. Cowles and his wife, Dixie, of Lilburn, Ga.; and a close friend, Margery Coles of Sumter.

Funeral services will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bullock Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or to a charity of one's choice.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

PAUL F. DuCOM Sr.

Paul Francois DuCom Sr., a lifelong Sumterite, died at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Jan. 25, 2004.

Born on leap year in 1908, he was a son of the late Edward Louis and Mary Dell Mellette DuCom. His wife of 70 years, Mildred R. DuCom, resides at Morningside, Sumter.

Affectionately known as "Big Paul" or "Mr. Paul, " his work and community service spanned 75 years. He was a charter member of the United States National Guard, 115th Artillery (1928-1935). From 1930 to 1960, he was superintendent of Sumter Machinery Rewinding Shop. In 1963, he founded and was president of Industrial Electric Machinery Rewinding Shop. A master electrician and member of the State Municipal Electrical Board (1960-1995), he taught journeyman and master electrician courses at Carolina Tech College, Extended Education (1965-1995).

He was especially proud of his long affiliation with the city of Sumter, dating back to 1928, when he volunteered as a firefighter. He continued to serve as a firefighter until 1974, when he began working for the city in the field of electrical and mechanical engineering. Chief electrician and electrical inspector for many years, he was retained as a consultant after retiring in 2001.

A lifetime member of the French Huguenot Society, he was also a lifetime member of First Families of South Carolina, Sons of the American Revolution and member, as well as Master Mason, Sumter Masonic Lodge (he was awarded the 60 year pin in 2003). He was a longstanding member of both Grace Baptist Church in Sumter, as well as Lake Marion Baptist Church, North Santee.

An avid fisherman and storyteller, he was a member of Brohn Lake Club. He often said that some of the happiest times of his life were fishing with his grandchildren at Cantey Bay, North Santee. He loved to cook catfish and chicken stew for family, friends, colleagues and civic groups. His hush puppies were considered to be the best by many happy diners. Another popular specialty, DuCom beef chili, was a prized and secret recipe handed down from his father, who used to own a hot dog stand in downtown Sumter.

Survivors include one son, Paul F. DuCom Jr. of Sumter; and one daughter, Mary Brent (Lido) Cantarutti of San Rafael, Calif.; one sister, Miriam (Alvin) Neal of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Paul F. DuCom III and Stanley Rett DuCom of Sumter, Alyce Mellette Dobson and Shan DuCom, both of St. Simon's Island, Ga., Mellette Warner of Lawrenceville, Ga., Perry Anthony Cantarutti of Tokyo and Jeffrey Paul Cantarutti of San Anselmo, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren.

His brothers and sister, Edward Louis DuCom, Joseph Elliot DuCom, Eugene Mellette DuCom and Mary Dell DuCom Spears preceded him in death.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. on his birthday, Feb. 29, at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bullock Funeral Home.

ROBERT L. WILKERSON

Robert L. Wilkerson, 63, husband of Willene Mellerson Wilkerson, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 23, 1940, in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was a son of Edna Mae Wilkerson Bradford of Fort Madison, Iowa, and the late Rev. Jefferson Davis Wilkerson. At an early age, he joined Second Baptist Church in Fort Madison, Iowa, which was the foundation of his spiritual growth and development. Later, when he came to Sumter because of his military duties, he joined Union Station AME Church, where he served in many capacities. He was a class leader, steward, church school superintendent, trustee, co-chairperson of the Christian education department, finance committee, male, sanctuary and inspirational choirs, an active member of the Sons of Allen and Bible study group.

He received his elementary and high school education from the schools in Fort Madison, Iowa, and Cleveland and also an associate degree in criminology from Central Carolina, Sumter. He served his country in the United States Air Force for 28 years, during which he received numerous meritorious service medals before retiring in 1985 as a senior master sergeant. He also retired as a correctional officer from Wateree Correctional Center. After retiring, he worked at Morris College as a security officer.

Survivors include two sons, Carl (Vicki) Wilkerson of Green Bay, Wis., and Dwain (Kristin) Wilkerson of Hampton, Va.; three daughters, Karen Wilkerson-Davis of Cheraw, Michelle (Mark) Middleton of Chesapeake, Va., and Erica (Roosevelt) Way of Columbia; one brother, Gerald Wilkerson of Los Angeles; one sister, Barbara Campbell of Atlanta; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and William Wilkerson.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Union Station AME Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Robert L. McCants, presiding elder of the Sumter District of the AME Church, the Rev. Dr. Thomas Bowman, Pastor Joanne P. Murrill, and the Rev. Bennie L. Kingwood.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Pallbearers will be Sons of Allen of Union Station AME Church.

Floral bearers will be Stewardess Boards of Union Station AME Church.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from his home, 17 Pembroke St., Sumter.

The family will receive friends at his home, 17 Pembroke St., Sumter.

MATTHEW M. BRABHAM Sr.

DALZELL -- Matthew Moye Brabham Sr., 91, husband of Frances Langston Brabham, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004.

Born in Bamberg, he was a son of the late Robert Franklin Brabham and the late Daisy Ida Brabham. Mr. Brabham was in the mercantile business and was a retired lieutenant with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office with 20 years of service. He was a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officer's Association. He was a member of High Hills Baptist Church at Stateburg. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years of Dalzell; a son, Matthew Moye Brabham Jr. and wife, Nelda, of Orange Park, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Riley and husband, Hubbard, of Savannah, Ga., and Ida Pauline "Polly" Hoffmann and husband, Erich, of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Matthew Moye Brabham III of Orange Park, Fla., Kay Riley of Savannah, Ga., Tracy Bauchle and husband, John, of Anchorage, Alaska, and John Moye Hoffman of Fairbanks, Alaska; one great-grandchild, Breana Brabham of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three brothers, Robert F. Brabham Jr. of Sumter, Wilsey Brabham of Dalzell and James H. Brabham of Rembert; and a sister, Phronsie Gardner of Dalzell.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, R.L. Brabham, C.F. Brabham and John Brabham; two sisters, Jeanette Elam and Mell Thames; and two grandchildren, Robbin Renee Brabham and Erich "Eddie" Hoffmann Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Franklin officiating.

Burial will be in Old Rembert cemetery in Lee County.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

STEVEN A. JACKSON Jr.

Baby Steven Andrew Jackson Jr. died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, he was a son of Steven Andrew Jackson Sr. and Nicole White.

Survivors include paternal grandparents, Andrew Jackson of New Jersey and Jonetta Jackson of Summerville; maternal grandmother, Deyarn (Larry) Hill and maternal grandfather, Wilson (Annie) Green, all of Sumter; great-grandmother, Nancy White (Lorenza) Kennedy of Sumter; two aunts, Latasha White and Laurencia Hill, both of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Walker cemetery with Pastor Eugene Mason officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 100 Bowen Court, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

W. GLEN PEARSON

W. Glen Pearson, 67, husband of Jo B. Pearson, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Griffithville, Ark., he was the son of W.T. Pearson and Marie Pate Pearson. Mr. Pearson was the founder of Audiovision, which he sold in 1993. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and the Elks Club. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a United States Air Force veteran.

Surviving besides his wife of Sumter are his parents of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Kim G. Pearson and his wife, Patricia, of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Glenda Serio and her husband, Sam, of Alpharetta, Ga.; one brother, Pate Pearson of Little Rock, Ark.; and four grandchildren, Leslie, Tiffany, Kimberly and Chrissy.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Clay Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at Lake St. Louis, Mo.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 107 Reynolds Road.

WILLIAM F. CHANDLER

Mr. William Fredrick "Papi" Chandler, 69, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in Newport News, Va.

He was born May 10, 1934, in Chelsea, Mass., a son of the late Royal and Mary Chandler. He was employed with Royal Prudential Window Cleaner until his retirement in 1998. After his retirement, he moved to Sumter for five years, then moving again to Newport News, Va.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mrs. Catherine Chandler of Sumter; one sister, Ms. Mildred Chandler of Chelsea, Mass.; one son, James Chandler Jr. of New York; two stepdaughters, Ms. Mary "Portia" Chavis of Sumter and Mrs. Denise (Charles) Dunham of Wedgefield; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends in Massachusetts; and his caregiver, Mrs. Marian Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating. Burial will follow in Bradford cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 231 Gibbons St., Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave the home, 231 Gibbons St., at 1:40 p.m.

FLYNN KING

MANNING -- Flynn King, 51, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at his residence, 1067 Blossom St., Manning.

Born July 7, 1952, in Manning, he was a son of the late Henry W. King Sr. and Merie L. Bradshaw King. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1970 graduate of Manning Training School. He was also a graduate of Williamsburg Technical College, Kingstree, in brick masonry. He was a member of William Chapel Church and a retired brick mason instructor with Clarendon School District.

Survivors include four sons, Corie King and Tyron Space, both of Manning, Russell (Nita) Carroway of Queens, N.Y., and Todd King of Ft. Stewart, Hinesville, Ga.; two brothers, Henry (Barbara) King Jr. and George (Mary) King, both of Manning; one sister, Gwendolyn (Billy) Smith of Manning; and three grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at William Chapel Church, S.C. 261, Kingstree Highway, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be former students and co-brick masons.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brothers, 8088 Greeleyville Highway, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.
