LELIA S. MONTGOMERY

Lelia Singleton Montgomery, 61, widow of William Montgomery, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 15, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William and Lottie Conyers Singleton.

The family will receive friends at the home of her aunt, Susan Conyers, 2345 Walter Conyers Lane, Sumter 29153.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

JASPER WASHINGTON Sr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Mr. Jasper Washington Sr., age 92, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in Washington, D.C. He was a son of the late Mr. Andrew Washington and Mrs. Portia Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Washington of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Thelma (Ernest) Postell of Washington, D.C.; son, Jasper Washington Jr. of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Gerald T. (Lucile) of Sumter and Terry (Betty) Washington of Hickory, N.C.; sister, Mary Robinson of Sumter; and a host of great-children and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sharon Baptist Church in Washington with the Rev. Ramsey O. Daniel, pastor.

Hunt Funeral Home of 908 Kennedy St., N.W. Washington, DC 20011, is in charge of the arrangements.

TERRANCE B. THOMAS

Terrance Bernard Thomas, 20, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, on Pinewood Road.

Born May 12, 1983, in Sumter, he was a son of Minister Rossi and Brenda Thomas Ramsey.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 415 McCleary Lane, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

HAROLD DAVID AUSTIN

Harold David Austin, 48, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his residence.

David was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, a son of Mary Howard Austin Bishop and the late Carl Eugene Austin. He was a self-employed construction worker.

Surviving in addition to his mother of the home is one brother, Robert Wayne Austin, of Sumter. Three sisters, Carol Rossiter of Marrerol, La., Debra Adams of San Bernardino, Calif., and Jamie Austin of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence, 2369 Crossfield Rd. in Sumter officiated by the Rev. Joe Peek.

Memorials may be sent to the Dalzell Baptist Church, 3645 Camden Highway in Dalzell.

GERTRUDE JOHNSON BALLARD

MANNING – Gertrude Johnson Ballard, 97, wife of the late Gabe Ballard, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Olivia Johnson.

The family will receive friends at the home 1111 Poston Lane in Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

LOUANNA WILSON

Louanna Wilson, 55, wife of John Wilson, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Tuomey Health Care System.

Born Oct. 31, 1948, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late William Edward Hilton and Earlian Mack Hilton.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mae (Bill) Singleton, 356 Curtis Drive.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home of Sumter.

VIRGINIA JOHNSON REEVES KEYS

Virginia Johnson Reeves Keys, 67, died Jan. 28, 2004, at Tuomey Health Care System.

Born Nov. 7, 1936, in Dothan, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Johnson and Lucille Randolph Johnson. She was educated in the public schools of Ashford, Ala. At the age of 14, Virginia joined The Sarders Missionary Baptist Church in Dothan where she served as a Junior Missionary. She spent more than 30 years in Manhattan, N.Y., before coming to South Carolina in 1989. She was employed in the hotel industry. After moving to South Carolina, Virginia joined the Willow Grove A.M.E. Church where she worshiped faithfully as a member of the Gospel Choir and Sunday School.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Mae Reeves of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Herbert (Cherl) Johnson of Rivera Beach, Fla., Henry Anderson of Gardon, Ala.; four sisters, Ruth Morries, Queen Ewars, both of Wabasso, Fla., Mildred White of Slocomb, Ala., Ann M. Washington of Washington, D.C.; and a special friend, Clezer Richbow of Horatio.

She was preceded in death by Samuel “Jack” Johnson.

The remains will be placed in the Willow Grove A.M.E. Church, 8105 Sumter Landing Road, Horatio, at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. Services will follow at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Antonio M. Bonner, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the Stewards and Trustees of Willow Grove A.M.E. Church.

Floral bearers will be the Women’s Missionary Society of Willow Grove A.M.E. Church and friends.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of Mrs. Emma L. Hadersham, 3320 Root Road, Horatio, at 12:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Emma L. Hadersham.

Williams Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

KATHARINE HURLBURT COWLES

Katharine Hurlburt Cowles, 100, wife of the late William M. Cowles died on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Morningside Assisted Living of Sumter.

She was born in Glastonbury, Conn., a daughter of the late Annie Phillips Nicholson and Everett Bradley Hurlburt. She was a registered nurse and worked as a visiting nurse for the Glastonbury School System. She was an avid gardener and was a member of the Azalea Garden Club and the Sumter Gallery of Art.

Survivors include two sons, John H. Cowles and his wife, Sharyl, of Sumter and William B. Cowles and his wife, Dixie, of Lilburn, Ga; and a close friend, Margery Coles, of Sumter.

Funeral services will be private.

The family received friends on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to a charity of one’s choice.

ULYSSES THOMPSON Sr.

MANNING – Ulysses Thompson Sr., husband of Mrs. Albertine Martin Thompson, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Clarendon County.

The family will receive friends at 1162 Cove Lane off Arlen Road in Manning.

Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

PAUL FRANCIS DuCOM Sr.

Paul Francis DuCom Sr., a lifelong Sumterite, died at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Jan. 25, 2004. Born on leap year in 1908, he was a son of the late Edward Louis and Mary Dell Mellette DuCom. His wife of 70 years, Mildred R. DuCom, resides at Morningside, Sumter.

Affectionately known as Big Paul or Mr. Paul, his work and community service spanned 75 years. He was a Charter Member of the United States National Guard, 115th Artillery (1928–1935). From 1930 to 1960 he was superintendent of Sumter Machinery Rewinding Shop. In 1963 he founded, and was president of, Industrial Electric Machinery Rewinding Shop. A Master Electrician and member of the State Municipal Electrical Board (1960–1995), he taught Journeyman and Master Electrician courses at Carolina Tech College, Extended Education (1965–1995).

He was especially proud of his long affiliation with the City of Sumter, dating back to 1928, when he volunteered as a firefighter. He continued to serve as a firefighter until 1974, when he began working for the city in the field of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Chief Electrician and Electrical Inspector for many years, he was retained as a consultant after retiring in 2001.

A lifetime member of the French Huguenot Society, he was also a lifetime member of First Families of South Carolina, Sons of the American Revolution and member, as well as Master Mason, Sumter Masonic Lodge. (He was awarded the 60-year pin in 2003). He was a long-standing member of both Grace Baptist Church in Sumter, as well as Lake Marion Baptist Church, North Santee.

An avid fisherman and storyteller, he was a member of Brohn Lake Club. He often said that some of the happiest times of his life were fishing with his grandchildren at Cantey Bay, North Santee. He loved to cook catfish and chicken stew for family, friends, colleagues and civic groups. His hushpuppies were considered to be the best by many happy diners. Another popular specialty, DuCom beef chili, was a prized and secret recipe handed down from his father, who formerly owned a hotdog stand in downtown Sumter.

Survivors include one son, Paul F. DuCom, Jr., of Sumter; and one daughter, Mary Brent (Lido) Cantarutti, of San Rafael, Calif.; one sister, Miriam (Alvin) Neal of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Paul F. DuCom III, Stanley Rett DuCom of Sumter; Alyce Mellette Dobson, Shan DuCom, both of St. Simon’s Island, Ga., Mellette Warner of Lawrenceville, Ga., Perry Anthony Cantarutti of Tokyo, Japan, and Jeffrey Paul Cantarutti of San Anselmo, Calif.; and six great grandchildren.

His brothers and sister, Edward Louis DuCom, Joseph Elliot DuCom, Eugene Mellette DuCom, and Mary Dell DuCom Spears preceded him in death.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. on his birthday, Feb. 29, at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Bullock Funeral Home.

ROOSEVELT RAMSEY

MANNING – Roosevelt Ramsey, 62, of Wisteria Way, Apartment 6B in Manning, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 14, 1941, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Joe Ramsey Sr. and Annie Lou Gadson Ramsey.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Deacon Louis and Lillie Ramsey, 1843 Pinecrest Acres, Alcolu.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

ROBERT BREWER Sr.

Robert Brewer Sr., husband of the late the Rev. Doreta Willis Brewer, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C. Born in Sumter County on Aug. 19, 1918, he was a son of the late George Brewer and Hester Blanding Brewer.

The family will recieve friends at the Brewer residence on 979 Meadowbrook Drive in Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

ALLAN LEE EDWARDS

Allan Lee Edwards, 71, husband of the late Naka Sasako Edwards, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Plans are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.
