ROBERT LEE PENDERGRASS

Robert Lee Pendergrass, 23, of 1579 Pinewood Road died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. Born Jan. 29, 1980, in Clarendon County, he was the son of La’Verne Pendergrass and James Fulmore.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Denitra Tindal of 1579 Pinewood Road.

Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

MOTHER ALBERTHA MICKENS ROGERS

Mother Albertha Mickens Rogers, 66, wife of James L. Rogers, died Jan. 28, 2004, at her home, 530 South Pike.

She was born May 30, 1937, in Sumter County the daughter of Wilson Mickens and Lou Ida Holmes Mickens.

After relocating to Paterson, N.J., with her husband, she became a member of Canaan Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for 31 years under the leadership of the Rev. Gadson L. Graham. She later became a member of Christ-Centered International Church (formerly Oasis of Love) of Jersey City, N.J./Harlem, N.Y., under the leadership of her son, the Rev. Kenton Rogers. Since her return to Sumter, she joined St. Mark's Four Bridges Baptist Church, where the Rev. Sammie D. Simmons is the pastor.

She was a valued employee of Bayada Nurses of Hackensack, N.J., where she was a home health aide. Her most recent employment was with the Covenant House of Sumter.

Survivors besides her husband and parents include her children, Leroy Tindal of Paterson, N.J., Fran Rogers of Fayetteville, N.C., Eric Andre (Twana) Rogers of Paterson, N.J., Kenton Rogers of Bronx, N.Y., Rhonda Nicole (Greg) Curry of Jersey City, N.J., Antwan Markeese Rogers of Sumter, and a daughter by love, Denise Rogers; three brothers, Earl (Catherine) Mickens of Charlotte, N.C., James (Van Jo) Mickens of Sumter, and William (Marie) Mickens of Paterson, N.J.; five sisters, Geneva Clark of Warenton, N.C., Mary (William) Quince of Paterson, N.J., Marie (Harmon) Isaac of Sumter, Susan E. Spann of Columbia and Janie (James) Witherspoon of Sumter; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three god-children.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Ministries, 95 Community St., Sumter.

Elder John R. Rogers, pastor, and the Rev. Sammie D. Simmons, pastor of St. Mark Four Bridges Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Kenton Rogers.

Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Sumter.

Pallbearers will be her nephews. Floral bearers will be missionaries and her nieces.

The funeral procession will leave at 12:20 p.m. from her home, 530 South Pike, Sumter. Family will receive friends at her home, 530 South Pike, Apt. 109.

Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

HAROLD DAVID AUSTIN

Harold David Austin, age 48, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his residence.

David was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, a son of Mary Howard Austin Bishop and the late Carl Eugene Austin. He was a self-employed construction worker.

Surviving in addition to his mother of the home is one brother, Robert Wayne Austin of Sumter; three sisters, Carol Rossiter of Marrerol, La., Debra Adams of San Bernardino, Calif., and Jamie Austin of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at his residence, 2369 Crossfield Road in Sumter, officiated by the Rev. Joe Peek.

Memorials may be sent to Dalzell Baptist Church, 3645 Camden Highway, Dalzell.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

RICHARD E. BYNUM

Richard E. Bynum, 45, husband of Elizabeth Bynum, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

CARRIE LEE ALSTON JOHNSON

Carrie Lee Alston Johnson, 66, of 131 McDaniel Road, Dalzell, died Saturday. Friends may call at 1717 Black River Road, Camden. Plans will be announced by Brown's Funeral Home, Camden.

HELEN STURGIS SMITH HUTSON

Helen Sturgis Smith Hutson, 86, widow of Randle A. Hutson, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning.

CLAUDE RABON SR.

BISHOPVILLE -- Claude Rabon Sr., 79, husband of Joann McLeod Rabon, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Tillman Rabon and the late Annie Ray Rabon. He was a member of the Ashwood Nazarene Church and was retired from DuPont.

Survivors include four sons, Claude Rabon Jr. and his wife, Bonwyn, of Sumter, Wayne Rabon and his wife, Kay, Johnny Rabon and his wife, Debbie, and Robert Rabon and his wife, Becky, all of Bishopville; five daughters, Leona Adams and her husband, Leroy, of Bishopville, Marie Hebert and her husband, Clyde, of Louisiana., Kathy Womble and her husband, Ralph, of North Carolina, Lynn Crisp and her husband, Boyd, of Sumter, and Karen McNair and her husband, Truitt, of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Otis Rabon and Pete Rabon, both of Lugoff, and George Rabon of Sumter; and five sisters, Lillian Barwick of Sumter, Elise Hancock and Margaret Cook, both of Lugoff, Eloise Brown of Hartsville, and Vivian Atkinson of Bishopville.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mable Rabon; and a son, Kenny McLeod.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in the Ashwood Nazarene Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 334 Williamson Road, Bishopville.

Memorials may be made to the Ashwood Nazarene Church, 2145 Green Lane, Bishopville, SC 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGIA B. SEGARS

Georgia Brunson Bradford Segars, 84, widow of Frank Moore Segars, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Sterling House.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Linwood Bonneau Bradford and the late Georgia Brunson Bradford.

Mrs. Segars was a former member of Dalzell United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board for several years. She was a current member of First Presbyterian Church for the past 13 years. She retired from Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service with 22 years of service.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Cornwall and Edith S. Newman and husband, Jimmy, of Sumter; a brother, Theron Bradford of Sumter; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, L. Bonneau Bradford Jr., John Francis Bradford and William Hartwell Bradford; and a son, Francis Moore Segars Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Edward McLeod officiating.

Burial will be in Sumter cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Frankie Griffin, Gary Griffin, Todd Griffin, Jim Newman, Dr. Linwood Bradford and Tim Russell.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150, or to a charity of one's choice.

ALMA JANE RHODES

DARLINGTON - Alma Jane Rhodes, 88, died Jan. 3, 2004, at Medford Place.

Born May 16, 1915, in Sharon, she was the daughter of Berry and Mary Love Rainey.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Iris S. Gladden, 630 E. main St., Timmonsville.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary.

VICTORIA T. DURANT

Mrs. Victoria T. Durant daughter of the late Mr. Cleveland Tindal Sr., the late Mrs. Ethel Richburg Durant and widow of the late Mr. Carroll Durant died on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Walter Reid Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Funeral services are incomplete but shall be announced later by the Fleming and Delaine Funeral Home.

HALLIE JAMES RICHARDSON

Hallie James Richardson, wife of the late Johnnie Richardson, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at the Hopewell Nursing Facility in Sumter. Born in Sumter County on Oct. 29, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin James and Rebecca Sharpe James.

The family will receive friends at the home of her grandaughter, Shalon Richardson, 225 Myrtle Beach Highway in Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Palmer Memorial Chapel.

PATRICIA M. BARNES

Patricia M. Barnes, 62, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Elmore-Hill-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

LAWRENCE SHEROD

SUMMERTON - Lawrence Sherod, 50, husband of Elloree Harvin Sherod, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 21, 1953 in Alcolu, he was a son of Mary Lou Sherod Fortune and the late John Felder.

The family will receive friends at his residence 1097 Jim Ross Road in Summerton.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

ELEANOR S. GOSNELL

DALZELL - Eleanor S. Gosnell, 82, wife of the late Fred R. Gosnell Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Mariner Healthcare East of Sumter.

Mrs. Gosnell was born June 9, 1921, in Damascus, Md., a daughter of the late Willard Lansdale and Cora Boyer Souder. She lived for many years in Florida where she worked for 21 years for the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce. She spent the last 12 years of her life in Dalzell. She worshipped with the Woodland Church of Christ while here. Prior, she worshipped with the Disston Avenue Church of Christ in Florida.

Surviving are one son, Fred R. Gosnell Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Dalzell; one daughter, Donna Lee Gosnell of Dalzell; one granddaughter, Melissa Lynn Stewart; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Lynn Stewart; one brother, Phil Souder; and one sister, Hazel Souder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, Willard Souder, and two sisters, Mary Norris and Evelyn Allnutt.

There will be a private burial in Memorial Park cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Memorials may be sent to the foundation of your choice that deals with research for scoliosis or the Susan G. Kormen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.
