THELMA "TINA" LEONTYNE ALSTON BREVARD

Thelma "Tina" Leontyne Alston Brevard, wife of the late Lawrence Brevard, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County on Jan. 15, 1962, she was a daughter and the youngest child of the late Thomas Alston Sr. and Ida Mae Croom Alston.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 20 Delage Circle in Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Palmer Memorial Chapel.

WILLIAM HOWARD FRANKLIN

William Howard Franklin, 91, husband of Willimea Prince Franklin, died Dec. 30, 2003, at Mariner Health Care in Sumter.

Born June 16, 1912, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Franklin. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was self-employed for many years.

Survivors include a son, Benee Lee (Vivian) Franklin; two stepsons, Abraham McDuffie of Sumter and John McDuffie of Augusta, Ga.; an adopted son, Willie Lee Donald of Sumter; two daughters, Shirley (Garland) Pack and Gloria Jean Franklin, both of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Ann Gary of Sumter.

The deceased was preceded in death by three sons, James, Amos and Linwood Franklin.

The remains will be place in the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Alcolu, at 1 p.m. Monday. Services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. William Prince and evangelist L. White.

Burial will be in the Mt. Nebo Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be trustees and floral bearers will be the trustees' wives.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from his home, 57 James Village Apartments, Sumter.

Williams Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

VIRGINIA RENFRO

SUMMERTON - Virginia Lee Murphy Renfro, 70, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 15, 1933 in Columbus, Oh., she was a daughter of the late Daniel Boone and Gayle Lucille Hamilton Murphy. She owned and operated Taw Caw Campground and attended Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Terri Lee Vacey Faerber of Manning; a son, Chet Vacey of Summerton; a sister, Wanda Culhane of Sumter; two brothers, James E. Murphy of Manning and Donald Murphy of Texas; one granddaughter.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the residence of Chet Vacey, 1247 Joyner Drive, Summerton.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St., 19th floor, New York, NY 10005.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CARRIE MAE EPPS

GREELEYVILLE - Carrie Mae Epps, 50, died Jan. 1, 2004, at 57 Canopy Lane in Greeleyville.

Born in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Epps and Ella Pompey Epps. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated with the class of 1971 from CE Murray High School in Greeleyville. She was a member of New Covenant Apostolic Church, serving as youth Sunday school teacher, adult choir, missionary secretary and usher board. She was employed at Warsaw Manufacturing for many years and later was employed at Wise Company until her health failed.

Survivors include her fiancé, Robert White of Manning; a son, Darin Epps of the home; five brothers, Fred (Rebecca) Epps of Greeleyville, General Lee (Denise) Epps of Salters; Harry (Myra) Epps of St. Stephens, Jeff (Pam) Epps of Manning and Wille Epps of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Rosa Epps and Mary Epps both of Greeleyville.

The remains will be placed in the New Covenant Apostolic Church, S.C. 521m Greeleyville, at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Services will follow at 11 a.m. with Bishop W. Ron Dunmore, pastor, officiating, assisted by District Elder Keels.

Burial will be in Hunter's cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and co-workers. Floral bearers will be the class of 1971.

The family will receive friends at the home, 57 Canopy Lane, Greeleyville.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

ROSA MAE A. SIMMONS

Mrs. Rosa Mae Alford Simmons departed this earthly life on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Mariner West Nursing Facility in Sumter.

Born in Clio, on July 15, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Mr. James and Mrs. Nancy Ellen Alford. Mrs. Simmoms joined the Zion A.M.E.Z. Church during her youth. Having completed high school in Clio, she attended Clinton Junior College and subsequently the historic Laurinburg Institute in Laurinburg, N.C. She was married to the late Rev. Moses Simmons Sr. who served faithfully as an AME pastor for 50 years. Mrs. Simmons traveled extensively and served loyally with her husband during his pastoral career in the Northeast and Palmetto Conferences of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was held in high esteem and respectfully remembered by those with whom she served over the years as an ideal minister's wife.

Mrs. Simmons joined the Mt. Pisgah Church after her husband retired from the A.M.E.Z. ministry. Since affiliating with Mt. Pisgah, she merited a special place in the hearts of the members. She was a member of the Stewardess Board No. 3 and a very active member of the Women's Sunday School Class. In addition to church and community work, Mother Simmons enjoyed gardening and cannery.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jacob Simmons and Moses Simmons Jr.

She leaves to cherish precious memories two sons, Ezekiel Simmons of Sumter and the Rev. Dr. Daniel L. Simmons Sr. of North Charleston; one sister, Ruth Alford McClain of Clio; three grandchildren, Daniel Jr. (Arcelia) and Rose Ann Simmons-Gill, both of Newport News, Va., and Johnetta Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special cousin, Rose Ann Williams of Sumter.

Special visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. only Sunday at the Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc., 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with Dr. Juenarrl Keith Sr., pastor, assisted by the Rev. Sandy W. Drayton, the Rev. Sylvester Miot, the Rev. Robert McCants and the Rev. Robert Thomas.

The remains will be placed in the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

Interment will be in the Walker cemetery.

The family will leave at 10 a.m. from the residence of 402 Dingle St.

The family will receive friends at 402 Dingle St.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

AURELIA DIGGS BYRD

Aurelia Diggs Byrd, 73, wife of Stonewall J. Byrd, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 9, 1930, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of William and Aurelia Slater Diggs.

The family will receive friends at 5605 Old Camden Highway at the home of sister Annie Lee McCoy.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home of Sumter.

ROBERT JAMES EVANS

LYNCHBURG – Robert James Evans of Lynchburg died on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at his residence after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Annie Mae Wilson Evans.

Services are incomplete and will be announced later by Jefferson Funeral Home Lynchburg.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 116 Elijah Lane, Lynchburg.

SADIE BELL GIBSON

Sadie Bell Gibson died on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on April 8, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Joe Johnson.

The family will receive friends at the home of Marcus Brown, 833 Weeks St. in Sumter.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

ROZENE D. STOKES

Rozene D. Stokes, 88, of Camden, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004.

Plans will be announced by Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.

BILLY JOE GRIMES

Billy Joe Grimes, age 63, beloved husband of 23 years to Cheryl Ann Hall Grimes, died on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Millen, Ga., a son of the late David Grimes and Theresa Parker Grimes. He served in the Georgia Army National Guard and worked at the Santee Print Works since 1988. He was union director of Machine Printer & Engineers Association, an avid fisherman and a loving father and grandfather. He was a member of the West Congregation Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Terry A. Grimes of Sumter; two daughters, Teresa Grimes Pounds of Adrian, Ga., and Remona Rountree of Atlanta; two sisters, Ena Mae Landing of Swainsboro, Ga., and Annie Jean Moore of Wadley, Ga.; three grandchildren, Teresa Renee Grimes, Rockey Lee Pounds and Tiffany Ann Pounds.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles E. Grimes; two sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Tomlinson Funeral Home in Swainsboro with Brother Frank Wiegl officiating. Burial will follow in The Forest Lawn cemetery in Swainsboro.

The family will receive friends on today from 6-8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the residence and on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Tomlinson Funeral Home in Swainsboro.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.
