Mary N. Baker, wife of John H. Baker Jr., died March 9, 2004, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Survivors besides her husband are sisters, Lula Sheridan of Columbia, Eleanor Denny of Aztec, N.M., Marguerite Goon and husband, Carroll, of Albuquerque, Gloria Kerr and husband, Bill, of Durham, N.C.; brothers, Nick Nichols and wife, Cleo, of Wedgefield and George Nichols and wife, Mary Ann, of Greenwood.

In lieu of flowers, John Baker has requested that donations may be made to Joy Junction Homeless Shelter, Box 27693, Albuquerque, NM 87125.

Funeral service will be held March 16, 2004, in Albuquerque.

EDWARD ELLIS MAYFIELD

SIMPSONVILLE -- Edward Ellis Mayfield, 7, the precious child of Charlie and Shea Mayfield, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, after a courageous 22-month battle with a brain stem glioma.

Born May 12, 1996, in Greenville, he was a second-grade student at Plain Elementary School in Simpsonville. He received the Governor's Citizenship Award for outstanding character, service, leadership, responsibility and discipline. He was an active member of Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his parents, Charlie and Shea Mayfield of the home; two brothers, Sullivan and Torre Mayfield of the home; one sister, Rebekah Mayfield of the home; paternal grandparents, Walter A. and "Bootie" Mayfield of Anderson; maternal grandparents, T.G. and Barbara Hanner of Greenville; great-grandfather, Edward Jones of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Steve Mays. Burial will be at 1 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church.

The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 N. Highway 81, Anderson.

The family is at the residence, 2 Caney Court, Simpsonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, 302 Ridgefield Court, Asheville, NC 28806.

Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, of Anderson is in charge of arrangements.

DELBERT WELCH

TURBEVILLE -- Delbert Welch, 69, died Monday, March 1, 2004, in his home.

Born Nov. 9, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Edna A. Welch and the late Samuel M. Welch. He was a retired truck driver.

Surviving besides his mother of Sardinia are his former wife of 38 years, Peggy Smith Welch Todd of Hemingway; three sons, Heyward Welch and his wife, Cindy, of Lynchburg, Russell "Shorty" Welch and his wife, Debbie, of Lake City, and John Allen Welch and his wife, Lynn, of Turbeville; four daughters, Brenda Baker and her husband, Donnie, and Jean Baker and her husband, Mark, all of Sumter, Wendy Teal and her husband, Terry, of Scranton, and Cheryl Branch and her husband, Charles, of Inman; four brothers, Ernest Welch and his wife, Bernice, of Sardinia, Kenny Welch and his wife, Letha, of Turbeville, Edward Welch and his wife, Rosie, of Sardinia, Bobby Welch of Gable; a sister, Lennie Chockley of Lake City; sister-in-law, Mattie Welch; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest "Peanut" Welch and Sam Welch Jr.; a sister, Jewel Mae "Sue" Johnson; and two brothers-in-law, Sid Chockley and Arthur Johnson.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Wayne Windham officiated.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA "BERT" LAWSON JOHNSON

SUMMERTON -- Bertha "Bert" Lawson Johnson, 70, wife of Franklin D. Johnson Sr., died Friday, March 12, 2004, at 1066 Clifton Road.

Born Nov. 15, 1933, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Bertie Lawson and Mary Richardson Lawson.

The family will receive friends at the residence 1066 Clifton Road, Summerton. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

SANDRA JEAN WESTBROOK YOUNGBLOOD

Sandra Jean Westbrook Youngblood, 64, wife of William Louis Youngblood Sr., died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Burlington, Vt., she was a daughter of the late Lawrence John Westbrook Sr. and the late Jane Dorothy Hackworth Westbrook.

She was employed by Farmers Telephone Cooperative for more than 24 years, was a member of VFW Post 3034 Ladies Auxiliary, the Midlands Retired Military Association, and attended St. Jude Catholic Church.

Survivors besides her husband include five children, William Louis Youngblood Jr. of Sumter, Debra Jane Youngblood Lunsford of Coral Springs, Fla., Lawrence John Youngblood of Turbeville, Daniel Thomas Youngblood of Bishopville and Michael Patrick Youngblood of Sumter; six grandchildren, Michael David Wingard, Heather Danielle Wingard, Kara Marie Russell, Devyn Wingard Youngblood, Bailey Alexsandra Lunsford and Austen Howard Youngblood; four brothers and sisters, Lawrence J. Westbrook of Lady Lake, Fla., Richard J. Westbrook of Niceville, Fla., Pamela M. Hawk of Sumter, and Randall S. Westbrook of Choctaw, Okla.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Patrick Westbrook.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with Deacon Charles Walsh officiating.

Burial will be in the Swainsboro City cemetery in Swainsboro, Ga. at 4 p.m.. Monday.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Westbrook, Richard Westbrook, Randall Westbrook, Michael David Wingard, Glen Alessandro and Jack Boyd.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with a prayer service to begin at 7:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Foundation, 750 Electric Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD LaBRUCE "BRUCE" JAYROE

GEORGETOWN -- Richard LaBruce "Bruce" Jayroe, 70, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Jayroe was born in Georgetown on June 29, 1933, a son of the late William Henry Jayroe Sr. and Annie Mae Cooper Jayroe. He grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Winyah High School. Mr. Jayroe served in the United States Air Force in France and was a member of VFW Post 6444 and American Legion Post 144. Mr. Jayroe retired from International Paper Co. in 1996. He was a member and former secretary of PACE, local union 377. Mr. Jayroe was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynn Jayroe Boan of Sumter; a son, Capt. Richard A. Jayroe of Poway, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Gwendolyn M. Davis of Georgetown; a stepson, Samuel G. McDowell of Tennessee; a brother, Harold B. Jayroe of Columbia; five sisters, Shirley Jayroe Hutto of McClellanville; Linda Jayroe Hardee, Nora Jayroe Overturf and Vivian Jayroe Wall, all of Georgetown; and Connie Jayroe Owens of Chicago; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home on today from 6 to 8 p.m.

KRISTI LYNN BUTLER

MANNING – Kristi Lynn Butler, 29, wife of Sherman Leon Butler, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born July 18, 1974, in Woodruff, she was a daughter of the late Bob and June Lock Hazard. She attended Home Branch Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are her stepmother, Aggie Hazard of Franklin, N.C.; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Willie Nell Watford of Manning; a daughter, Amber Lynn Butler of Manning; a son, Dylan Lee Butler of Manning; four sisters, Shelly Pickel of Easley, Bobbi Hazard and Cheryl Clarmont of Wisconsin, and Summer Roach of Woodruff; two brothers, Raymond Hazard of Wisconsin and Steve Hazard of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of Manning, with the Rev. Jeff Hunt officiating, assisted by the Revs. Billy McGugan and Tracy Benenhaley. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Forest Lawn cemetery in Laurens, with Steve Pickel officiating.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to Home Branch Church of God of Prophecy, 2211 Conner Road, Manning, SC 29102.

SELMA LEE FRIERSON

KINGSTREE --- Funeral services for the late Ms. Selma Lee Frierson will be held at noon Wednesday at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Wilson Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. Father Kerre will conduct the religious services. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ms. Frierson, 76, departed this life on Friday, March 12, 2004, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born April 21, 1927, in Williamsburg County. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Steven Frierson Sr. and Mrs. Maggie Fulton Frierson.

She was educated in Williamsburg County public schools. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. In her early years, she was a member of Wilson Chapel Baptist Church.

Loved ones who will cherish her memories are one daughter, Ms. Sandra Jean Wilson of Kingstree; one sister, Ms. Sula Mae Burgess of Pahokee, Fla.; her grandchildren, Mr. Anthony Wilson of Myrtle Beach, Ms. Dether Wilson, Mr. Jeremiah Fulton, Ms. Brandi Fulton and Mr. Davida Fulton, all of Kingstree; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

EDNA MAE TAYLOR NELSON

MANNING --- Edna Mae Taylor Nelson, 64, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning.

ELAINE JOHNSON SIMON

COLUMBIA – Elaine Johnson Simon, 57, wife of Bruce Simon, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at her home in Columbia.

Born Nov. 12, 1946, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Julian S. and Sadie Holladay Johnson. She attended the University of South Carolina and was a former dental hygienist and a former teacher's aide at Lower Richard High School in Richland County School District 1. Mrs. Simon was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia and an active member of Daughters of the King.

Surviving besides her husband of Columbia are a daughter, Paula Simon Otto and husband, Roman, of Irmo; two sons, Marty and Brian Simon of Columbia; three brothers, Carlyle Johnson of Virginia and Aubrey and Mike Johnson, both of Manning; a sister, Barbara Johnson Husband of Columbia; three grandchildren, Trey, Warner and Evan Otto. She was preceded in death by brothers, Ray, Seth and Sandy Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

NEW ZION -- Funeral services for the late Ms. Patricia James will be 2 p.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Evans will conduct the religious services. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ms. James, 51, departed this life on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. She was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Kingstree, and was a daughter of Mrs. Estelle Montgomery James and the late Mr. Ben James.

She was educated in Williamsburg County public schools.

Loved ones who will cherish her memories are her mother, Ms. Estelle James of Lake City; one sister, Ms. Allie Mae Adams of Syracuse, N.Y.; two uncles, Mr. Murray Montgomery (Janie Mae) Montgomery of New Zion, Mr. Samuel Montgomery (Laura) of Quinby; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.

LEROY BROWN

SALTERS -- Funeral services for the late Mr. Leroy Brown will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Great Present AME Church cemetery. The Rev. Minnie B. Davis will conduct the religious services. Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mr. Brown, 49, departed this life on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. He was born Jan. 26, 1955, and was a son of Mrs. Rena Rush Brown and the late Mr. Cleesar.

He was educated in Georgetown County public schools. He was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Loved ones who will cherish his memories are his loving wife, Mrs. Gladys S. Brown of Salters; one daughter, Ms. Jennifer Brown of Salters; one stepdaughter, Ms. Michelle Sumpter, both of Salters; his mother, Ms. Rena Brown of Andrews; two brothers, Mr. Michael Brown of Myrtle Beach and Mr. Phillip Brown (Mae E.) of Georgetown; five sisters, Ms. Cynthia Brown of Andrews, Ms. Janice Lane (Johnny), Ms. Mary Lance, Ms. Martha Brown, all of Columbia, Ms. Sylvia Myers (Moses) of Georgetown; seven uncles; seven aunts; one grandaunt; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.
