MANNING -- Sallie Ragin Watson, 84, widow of Henry Watson Jr., died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 1, 1919, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Gip Ragin Jr. and Cora Brunson Ragin.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 6775 Silver Road, Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

LAWRENCE W. NUNNERY

MANNING -- Lawrence Wayne Nunnery, 52, husband of Patricia Gibson Nunnery, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his home in the Home Branch community of Manning.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory in Manning.

ROBERT T. MITCHELL

MANNING -- Robert Thomas Mitchell, 79, husband of Mildred Pugh Lemon, died March 16, 2004, at 1548 Winter Hill Road, Manning.

Born June 1, 1924, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Samuel A. Mitchell and Sarah Ann McBride Mitchell.

The family will receive friends at the home of his stepdaughter, Barbara Lemon, 1118 MS Road Road, Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

DAVID WAY

Mr. David Way, 27, of 1049 Huddersfield Drive, died Sunday morning, March 14, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. Born Jan. 18, 1977, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mr. Isaiah Parker and Ms. Vangeline Way Parker.

David attended the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter counties and graduated from Sumter High School. David was a compassionate and caring person who loved everyone.

Survivors include his father, Mr. Isaiah Parker of Manning; mother, Ms. Vangeline Way Parker of the home; two brothers, Mr. Charles and Mr. Michael Parker of Sumter; one sister, Miss Tasha Parker of Goldsboro, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Mr. Silas and Mrs. Eliza Ann Brunson of Manning; paternal grandparents, Mr. Moses and Mrs. Mary Parker of Manning; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Leah Brown of Paxville; one nephew, Rassan Edward.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 19, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Weston, pastor, assisted by the Revs. J. Jackson and L.T. James. Burial will follow in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving visitors at the home.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JOHNNY L. McKIVER

Johnny Lee McKiver, 58, husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Green Boozer McKiver, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends at the home, 219 Kirven St. in Pinewood.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

WILLIAM KELLEY

William Kelley died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

RIAH M. HINNANT

Miss Riah Marie Hinnant entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Sunday, March 14, 2004.

Born in Sumter County on July 20, 1971, she was a daughter of Mrs. Carrie Dell Gordon Hinnant and the late Mr. Willie Hinnant. Riah attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church in Sumter.

Survivors include her mother, Carrie Dell Hinnant of the home; three daughters, Kindra Hinant, Kala Hinnant and Kalendra Hinnant, all of Sumter; two brothers, Stacey Hinnant and his wife, Mya, and Willie Hinnant Jr. and his wife, Joycelyn, all of Sumter; three sisters, Sandra Amos and her husband, Michael, and Ophelia Hinnant, all of Sumter, and Shirley Smith and her husband, Roy Lee, of Lake City; paternal grandmother, Lillian McCray of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Keonica Isaac and Khyree Hinnant of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 1:30 to 9 tonight.

The family will receive visitors at 14 W. Patricia Drive.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA L. JOHNSON

SUMMERTON – Bertha "Bert" Lawson Johnson, 70, wife of Franklin D. Johnson Sr., died Friday, March 12, 2004, at the residence, 1066 Clifton Road in Summerton.

Born Nov. 1, 1933, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Bertie Lawson and Mary Richardson Lawson.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Franklin D. Johnson Sr. of the home, include two sons, Albertis (Ivory) Lawson of Summerton and Franklin (Patricia) Johnson Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Celestine (Ulyses) Bethea of Newark, N.J., Barbara Johnson of the home and Betty Johnson of Newark; a brother, Tyrone Lawson of Summerton; and 11 grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. M.J. Capers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1066 Clifton Road in Summerton.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING – Robert Thomas Mitchell, 79, companion of Mildred Pugh Lemon, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 1548 Winter Hill Road in Manning.

Born June 1, 1924, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Samuel A. Mitchell and Sarah Ann McBride Mitchell. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired painter and an employee of Jerry's Truck Stop. He was a former member of St. Phillips RMUE Church.

Survivors besides his companion include a son, Robert (Sarah) Mitchell of Bishopville; three daughters, Earnestine (Rufus) Ragin of Columbia, Marie Mitchell of Summerton and Sabrenia G. Lemon of the home; two stepsons, Henry Lemon of Manning and Kenny (Edith) Lemon of Sumter; four stepdaughters, Sarah (Lun) Wells of Lanes, Gussie (Wayne) Johnson and Barbara A. Lemon, both of Manning, and Teresa (Damien) Lemon of Plant City, Fla.; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with the Rev. Henry Mitchell officiating, assisted by Minister John Nelson, Minister Jerry Johnson and Elder Sampson Pearson. Burial will be in Manning cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Floral bearers will be his granddaughters.

The family will receive friends at the home of his stepdaughter, Barbara Lemon, 1118 M. S. Road in Manning.

ROBERTA SCHMITT

MANNING – Roberta Schmitt, 59, widow of Raymond Schmitt, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

MABELL OWENS

Mabell Owens, 86, widow of Isaac Owens, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 6, 1918, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Rosa Kelly Bennett.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 345 Rolling Creek Drive in Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc.

THOMAS WESTON

Thomas "Butt" Weston, 86, widower of Annie B. Weston, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 13, 1917, in Eastover, he was a son of the late John Reese and Rosa Weston.

He attended the public schools in Sumter and Morris College. He served in the U.S. Marines and was employed by Georgia Pacific for more than 25 years. He was a faithful member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, David (Constance) Weston of Sumter; two daughters, Lorraine Weston and Linda Funchess, both of Sumter; a special grandson, David E. (Stacy) Weston of Sumter; a brother, Julian (Claudia) Weston of Cheraw; two sisters, Lillian Taylor of Eastover and Gertrude Dozier of Bedford, W.Va.; three sisters-in-law, Janie Weston and Carrie Benjamin, both of Sumter, and Ernestine Weston of Gary, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Joseph Coulter of Sumter; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Christine "Pete" Soto and Barbara Epps; a grandson, Stephano A. Weston; four brothers and three sisters.

A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 tonight at Job's Mortuary Inc.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Ellie Palmer, Willie Wilson, Juenarrl Keith, Larry Weston and Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 823 S. Main St.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD ROBINSON Jr.

PINEWOOD – Mr. Richard "Shortie" Robinson Jr., 53, of 401 Railroad Ave., entered eternal rest at his home on Saturday, March 14, 2004.

Richard was born in Sumter County, June 29, 1954, a son of Mr. Richard (Rosa) Robinson Sr. and the late Mrs. Lue Ella Johnson Robinson, and the widower of Mrs. Rosetta Robinson. He attended the public schools of Sumter County.

Survivors include his father, Richard Robinson Sr.; his stepmother, Rosa Robinson of Pinewood; two daughters, Cindy Vereen of Spring Lake, N.C., and Rosa Prayther of Conway; a brother, Johnny Lee Robinson and his wife, Joann, of Thomasville, N.C.; seven sisters, Lutisha Browning and her husband, Russell, Mary Lee Holmes and her husband, Murray, Gracie Conyers and her husband, Willie, Sallie Ann Robinson, and Joann Walker and her husband, John E., all of Pinewood, Lucille Watson and Janet Calloway, both of Yonker, N.Y.; two additional sisters-in-law, Marie Robinson and Gladys Robinson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. James AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Sandra Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Roosevelt Boyd, the Rev. Leroy T. James and the Rev. Richard James. Burial will follow in the Manning cemetery, Pinewood.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 tonight and other times at the home.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
