MILDRED K. CUNNINGHAM

OLANTA -- Mildred Knight Cunningham, 78, widow of Sam Cunningham, died March 20, 2004.

She was a daughter of the late Rev. J.M. Knight and Ella Brayboy Knight.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur (Ida Mae) Knight of Kingstree, James (Luvenia) Cunningham of Scranton and Randy (Cindy) Cunningham of Mason City, Iowa; four daughters, Mildred Ann Cunningham of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., Martha (Hose) Torres of Florence, Mary McFadden of San Diego, Calif., and Betty Ann Godfrey of Olanta; one sister, Eloise K. Brown of Olanta; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 21 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today from Jordan Chapel Baptist Church, Olanta, with the Rev. Oliver Davis officiating. Burial will be in New McFadden cemetery.

Green's Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

MARY LAMPKINS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mary Lampkins, wife of William Lampkins, died March 22, 2004, in Charlotte, N.C.

She was a sister of L.C. (Carolyn) Frederick of Sumter.

Services will be held today in Charlotte.

HOMER LEE FOREMAN

MOULTRIE, Ga. -- Homer Lee Foreman, 80, widower of Nell Flowers Foreman, died March 21, 2004, in Warhaw, N.C.

Born Jan. 19, 1924, in Hattiesburg, Miss., he was a son of the late John Nathan Foreman Sr. and Willie Clegg Foreman. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a retired teacher and insurance adjuster. He was a member of Norman Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son-in-law, Fred J. Duncan of Waxhaw, N.C.; two daughters, Rebecca Lee Gotlieb of South Portland, Maine, and Virginia Foreman Duncan of Waxhaw, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Lou Bazemore of Lyons, Ga., and Gerrye Clegg of Landrum, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Lillian Foreman of Norman Park, Ga.; three grandchildren, Joshua A. Gotlieb, W. Adam Goudelock and Michael P. Duncan; and two great-grandchildren, Dylan Libby and Haley Gotlieb.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Nathan Foreman Jr.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Norman Park, Ga. The Rev. Jimmy Voyles officiated, assisted by Brother Shane Ashley. Burial was in Pine Forest cemetery, Worth County.

Michael Duncan, Adam Goudelock, Rodney Foreman, Joe Bazemore, Clegg Bazemore and Stan Bazemore served as casket bearers.

Visitation was held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Norman Park, Ga.

Harrell Faircloth Funeral Home of Moultrie, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

HORTON H. HOWARD

MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- The Rev. Dr. Horton H. Howard, 57, died March 24, 2004, at Harlem Hospital, Manhattan, N.Y.

Born Sept. 28, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sabie and Mary Vaughn Howard.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Thelma H. Evans, 407 W. Bartlette St., or at 882 Kolb Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

LILLIAN L. WEARY

PHILADELPHIA -- Lillian Lesane Weary, 71, wife of William Weary, died March 23, 2004, at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

Born Feb. 25, 1933, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Flora Solomon Lesane. She attended the public schools of Mayesville. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and became a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Mayesville. After relocating to Philadelphia, she attended Berean Presbyterian Church until her health declined. She was employed by Pennsylvania Hospital as a housekeeper and supervisor for 38 years.

Survivors besides her husband of 49 years include one daughter, Albertha (Vernon) Ruffin of Philadelphia; two sons, David (Dolly Ann) Lesane of Sumter and Willie (Shirley) Lesane of Mayesville; six grandchildren, Chantee Ruffin and Vernon K. Ruffin Jr., both of Philadelphia, David Lesane, Teresa Lesane, Teresa "Poo-Noo" and Laine, all of South Carolina; seven sisters, Henrietta Durant, Fannie Smith, Berlease Benjamin, Virginia Johnson, Hattie (Tommy) Montgomery, all of Mayesville, Cornelia (David) Cooks of Richmond, Va., and Mary Ella Lesane of Chicago.; a mother-in-law, Ms. J. Weary; two special nieces, Mary Lou Johnson and Kendra Johnson; and two special nephews, Kevin Johnson and Keith Johnson, all of Philadelphia; seven brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; one stepdaughter; one stepbrother; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one brother, I.D. Lesane; and two sisters, Rosa "Nana" Lee Lesane Flood and Creola "Sweet" Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Stanley Jones I, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mayesville cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 2127 Avenue A, Mayesville.

GENEVA N. COVINGTON

Geneva Nathaniel Covington, age 68, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at her residence, 402 Palmetto Towers in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County on June 24, 1935, she was the daughter of Janie J. Nathaniel and the late Deacon Ferdinand Nathaniel Sr. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church of Wedgefield. She later joined Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church in Bishopville, where she was a member of the senior choir and senior missionary.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Janie J. Nathaniel; seven grandchildren, Kenyatta Scriven of Florence, Shakeila Commander of Charleston, Ashley, Tierra, Tawanda, Dwayne and Ishamel Scriven, all of Sumter; two sisters, Vernell James and the Rev. Julia V. (James) Sanders, both of Sumter; two brothers, Ferdinand Nathaniel of Richmond, Va., and Deacon Larry (Ida) Nathaniel of Sumter; one uncle, the Rev. Alexander (Julia) Nathaniel of Sumter; three great-grandchildren, Irmani Woods, Tyquan Scriven and Ta Quarious M. Scriven; two sisters-in-law, Mary Nathaniel of Baltimore, and Emma Nathaniel of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was initially married to Johnny Scriven and to this union two children were born. She later married Jimmy Covington, who preceded her in death.

She also had two children, Johnny Mae McCoy and Kenneth Scriven; a grandson, Michael Scriven; and two brothers, Robert and Ezekiel Nathaniel, who preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Union Missionary Baptist Church, Wedgefield, Pastor Travis Holmes. The Rev. Julia V. Sanders, pastor of Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church, Bishopville, will give the eulogy, assisted by Ministers Derrick Arthur, Mary Caldwell, Louvenia Dix, William Sanders and Willie Solomon.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial cemetery in Sumter.

The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Mrs. Janie J. Nathaniel, 4260 Wedgefield Road.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN C. DAVIS

Helen Cain Davis, 83, wife of Julius Elbert Davis Jr., died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Estill, she was a daughter of the late Wildon Wright Cain and Cora Lee Wilkerson Cain. Mrs. Davis was a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church, where she served as past president of the United Methodist Women. She served as a volunteer with the Sumter County March of Dimes, served as past president of the Parents Club when her children attended Hillcrest and was also a volunteer at Thomas Sumter Academy.

Surviving are her husband of Dalzell; one son, Julius Elbert Davis III and wife, Joye, of Dalzell; two daughters, Patricia D. Smith and husband, Julius, of Atlanta and Jenny D. Dennis of Dalzell; six grandchildren, Charlotte D. Smith, Shannon D. McCutchen, Julia H. Davis, Daniel M. Dennis IV, Davis C. Dennis and Jenny-Lee Dennis; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas McCutchen and Lee McCutchen.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Mickey Bell officiating.

Pallbearers will be James R. Davis, Richard E. Davis, John M. Davis, Daniel M. Dennis III, Tommy S. Laney and Billy Joe Langston.

Honorary pallbearers will be James M. Edens Jr., H. Curt Edens, Wade Jones, Dr. Lea B. Givens, Pete Rocqemore, William "Bill" McLaughlin and Arthur W. James.

The family will receive friends at the home, Orange Grove, 4410 Black River Road, Dalzell.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, Thomas Sumter Academy, 5265 Camden Highway, Dalzell, SC 29040, or to Wilson Hall School, 2801 Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

MARIE C. BENJAMIN

Marie Cato Benjamin, 79, widow of James Ealy Benjamin, died March 24, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late Doc and Emma Cato. She attended the public schools of South Carolina. Residing in Queens, N.Y., for 30 years, she attended Rush Temple AME Zion Church, where she served on the senior choir and floral club. After returning to Sumter, she became a faithful member of St. Peter AME Church in Mayesville, where she sang on the senior choir and was a part of the missionary society.

Survivors include four children, James L. (Gertrude) Benjamin of Montgomery, Ala., Ula M. Carter of Uniondale, N.Y., who returned to Sumter a year ago to take care of her mother, Charlotte D. (Melvin) River of Atlanta, and Theodore "Ted" (Sonji) Benjamin of Sumter; two sisters, Emma Cato and Rachel Wilson, both of Mayesville; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband of 57 years, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ben Cato, and one sister, Annie Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter AME Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Francis Dennison, pastor, assisted by evangelists Beatrice Whitehead and Sonji C. Benjamin. Burial will be in St. Peter AME Church cemetery, Mayesville.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 520 Colonial Drive, Sumter.

HATTIE MAE P. CASE

CAMDEN -- Funeral services for Hattie Mae Proctor Case, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Wateree Baptist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Everett Reconnu will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Case died Wednesday, March 24, 2004. Born in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Victoria Lackey Proctor. She was a member of Wateree Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, James Albert Case; daughters, Candace Cosimato of Orlando, Fla., and Cynthia Case of Indianapolis; son-in-law, Eddie Dabney of Camden; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Case Dabney, three brothers and two sisters.

MILDRED KNIGHT CUNNINGHAM

OLANTA – Mildred Knight Cunningham, 78, wife of Sam Cunningham, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Cook Nursing Home in Florence.

Born March 17, 1925, in Florence County, she was a sister of Eloise Brown of Olanta.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Eloise Brown, 4054 Swann Road, in Olanta.

Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.

MARIA JANE RILEY

Maria Jane Riley, 90, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1914, in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of the late Murphy Riley Sr. and Menda Harvin Riley. She attended the Reese Chapel School. At an early age, she was baptized and became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Senior Usher Board until her health declined. She was also a member of the United Order of Tent, Order of Eastern Stars and the Household of Ruth. She was employed as a Domestic Worker.

Survivors include two sons, James (Rhonda) Riley Sr. of Philadelphia and Herbert (Marilyn) Riley of New Jersey; three granddaughters, Angelia (Albert) Brown, Denise (Luke) Stewart, both of Sumter and Tara Robinson (David Gilbert) whom she reared of Wedgefield; one sister-in-law, Pearl Riley of Columbia; one-son-in-law, Johnnie Lee Robinson Jr. of Paxville; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one goddaughter, Julia Hammond of Sumter; a special cousin, David (Annie Mae) Murray Sr. of Wedgefield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Mae Robinson; five brothers, Murphy Riley Jr., James Lewis Riley, Leroy Riley, Johnny Riley and Shockon Riley Sr.; one sister, Susannah Riley Hatley; one granddaughter, Annette T. Robinson; and one grandson, Jed M. Robinson whom she reared.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her granddaughter, Tara Robinson, 580 Eagle Lane in Wedgefield.

Job's Mortuary, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.
