CAROLYN M. ATKINSON

Carolyn McAlister Atkinson, 67, widow of Robert L. Atkinson, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of Azilee Kirby McAlister and the late Roland D. McAlister. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her mother; a son, Robert W. Atkinson and his wife, Daphney, of Manning; a daughter, Lisa A. Vohs and her husband, Douglas, of Sumter; three brothers, William "Son" McAlister, Charles McAlister and his wife, Faye, and Johnny McAlister and his wife, Maree, all of Sumter; one sister, Faye Wooley and her husband, Ron, of Montana; numerous grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Kristina Nicole Atkinson.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Adrian Ingram, Rickie Spencer, Reggie Spencer, Mike Vohs, Clint Geddings and David Geddings.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2245 Boots Branch Road.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

JAMES C. BROWN

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. -- James C. "Jim" Brown, 68, husband of Ruth Brown, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Heyward Brown and the late Mattie Brown. He was a member of Sumter Baptist Temple and was a 1954 graduate of Edmunds High School. He was retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service and also served with the Army Reserve for five years. He served two tours in Vietnam, the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg and the 173rd Airborne in Vietnam, and was the recipient of four purple hearts. He was also a correctional officer with the Wateree Correctional Center and the Columbia Correctional Institute.

Survivors include his wife of Pennington Gap, Va.; a sister, Avanell Hendrix of Sumter; a nephew, Randy Osteen of Manning; and a niece, Annell Smith of Summerton.

Funeral services will be held a 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Ernest Hendrix, Randy Osteen, Steve Lowder, Stacy Osteen, Bobby Dubose and Louie Brown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter Baptist Temple, 2295 Harper St., Sumter, SC 29153.

ILEATHA P. SLATER

MANNING -- Ileatha Pearson Slater, 51, wife of Harold Slater, died March 27, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Dec. 4, 1952, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Pearson Sr. and Julia Mae Cain Pearson. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School Class of 1970. She continued her education at Morris College in Sumter and received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. At an early age, she joined Antioch Baptist Church, where she sang on the junior choir and was former president of the youth choir. She also sang on the college choir.

Survivors besides her husband, Harold Slater of the home, include one daughter, Shantell (Willie) Blanding of Manning; a stepdaughter, Kinshausha Taylor of Florence; two brothers, Charlie Edward Pearson Jr. of St. Helena Island and Thomas Pearson of Manning; three sisters, Naomi (James) Hilton and Joann McKinney, both of Manning, and Ella P. Allen of Temple Hill, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Doretha Pearson; and one brother, Uylsses Pearson.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church, James Lemon-Dingle Road, Jordan community of Clarendon County, with the Rev. Antonio Lee, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O'Donald Dingle, Elder Sampson Pearson and the Rev. Chris Grady. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be Manning Training School Class of 1970 and friends of the family.

The family will receive friends at the home, 10 Ragin St., Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HORTON H. HOWARD

MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- The Rev. Dr. Horton H. Howard, 57, died March 24, 2004, at Harlem Hospital, Manhattan, N.Y.

Born Sept. 28, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sabie and Mary Vaughn Howard. At an early age, he distinguished himself as a Christian and united with Trinity Baptist Church, where he later acknowledged a call to the preaching ministry. Upon delivering his initial sermon, he was licensed as a preacher. Subsequently, he was ordained by the Sumter Baptist Association. He was educated in the public schools in Sumter School District 17. Upon graduation from Lincoln High School, he matriculated at Morris College, where he earned the bachelor of theology degree. The call to the pastoral ministry was extended to Pastor Howard by several South Carolina churches: New Prospect Baptist Church, Anderson; Flat Rock Baptist Church, Walhalla; Springfield Baptist Church, Vance; Friendship Baptist Church, Nicols; and Galilee Baptist Church, Mayesville. He was also the founding pastor of The Howard Temple Baptist Church of New York City.

Survivors include three sons, Randy Howard of Ann Arbor, Mich., Clifton (Hanika) Howard of Friedberg, Germany, and Travis Howard of Greenville; three sisters, Isabella Weston, Emma Charles and Thelma Evans, all of Sumter; three aunts, one uncle, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives, with an innumerable host of colleagues, friends and acquaintances.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Richard Henry, John Henry, Essie Sims, Ellen Glisson, Rosa Colclough and Julia Ragin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church, 101 S. Salem Ave., Sumter, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Dr. Marion H. Newton, Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., Dr. Clinton Brantley, Dr. Turman C. Tarte, the Rev. Charles E. Smith and the Rev. Kenneth Choice.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister, Thelma H. Evans, 407 W. Bartlette St., Sumter, and 882 Kolb Road, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

STEPHEN INGRAM

CAMDEN -- Stephen Ingram died Sunday, March 28, 2004.

Funeral service for Stephen Ingram, 90, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Collins Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Andrew Ingram Sr. and the late Molly Sutton Ingram. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and retired from the Kershaw County Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are a son, Frank Ingram; daughter, Gladys Loney; a sister, Lula Bell Carroll; brother, Calvin Ingram; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

MARY A. JACKSON

COLUMBIA -- Mrs. Mary Alice Jackson died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at a Columbia hospital after a long illness.

She was the widower of Mr. Larry Jackson of Lynchburg.

Services are incomplete and will be announced later by Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

FRANCIS H. ANDERSON III

Francis "Frank" Henry Anderson III, 62, husband of Jimmie Anne Owens Anderson, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Darby, Pa., he was a son of the late Francis Henry Anderson Jr. and Florence Evelyn Clarke Anderson. Mr. Anderson was the owner and operator of Anderson ABC Store and was a member of the Sumter Elks Lodge BPOE No. 855.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Rosanne S. Owens of Sumter; two sons, Mark F. Anderson and his wife, Fran, of Gilbert and Brian J. Anderson and his wife, Crystal, of Lexington; one daughter, Stacy Larrayne and her fiance', David Veldman, both of West Columbia; one brother, David R. Anderson of Gardiner, Maine; one sister, Jeannette Hildick of Grand Island, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Megan, Marshall, Amber, Ben and Zane Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Walter Presson, Ronald DaNella, John McCoy, Steve Biering, Bill Urquhart and Eldon Richards.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Elks Lodge.

The family will receive friends at the home, 472 Cedarwood Drive.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter Elks Lodge Veterans Fund, 1100 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.

LOUIS M. NELSON

MANNING -- Louis Melvin Nelson, 71, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 30, 1932, in New York City, he was a son of the late Samuel George and Cassie Marshan Wright Nelson. He attended the public schools of New York City. Upon graduation, he entered into the United States Armed Forces and received an honorable discharge on Oct. 31, 1960. At an early age, he joined Metropolitan Community United Methodist Church, New York City, where he became the organist and pianist for several years. He began his working career with the United States Department of Treasury in the U.S. Customs Department at the World Trade Center, New York, in the seized property division, where he retired after more than 40 years of service to his government.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Virginia Price Nelson of Chester; one niece, Bessie Yvonne "Cukye" Nelson of Sumter; one nephew, Louis Maceo (Michelle) Nelson Sr. of Spartanburg; one great-nephew, Louis Maceo Nelson Jr.; one great-niece, Wanda Antoinette Nelson of Sumter; one great-great-niece, NyAsia Marshan; two great-great-nephews, Demetre' Napoleon and Nigel Naseen; and a host of devoted relatives, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Carolina Chapel, Mickey Funeral Service, 228 Lenox Ave., New York, NY 10027, with the Rev. William E. Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in Kensico cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter and Mickey Funeral Service of New York City are in charge of arrangements.

JOHN D. HODGE Sr.

John Delton Hodge Sr., 66, husband of Patricia Riles Hodge, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

EDITH TAYLOR

Edith Taylor, 64, died March 30, 2004, at her residence, 203 Montreat St.

Born Dec. 23, 1939, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Annie Liza Taylor.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, George Ann Taylor, 650B Miller Road.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ELLANORA B. DAVIS

Ellanora Benjamin Davis, formerly of Pinewood, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Long Island College Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Serena James Benjamin.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Sarah Kennedy, 1085 S. Hampton St., Pinewood.

Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.
