BYRON E. HEVERLY

Byron Eugene Heverly, age 80, beloved husband of more than 30 years to Jeanette L. Heverly, died on Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1923, in Jersey Shore, Pa., a son of the late Cora Ellen Bower and Leroy Heverly. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant E6, having served 28 years. He saw service in World War II in the Pacific Theater including Guam, Leyte, the Philippines, Aka Shima, la Shima and Okinawa, where he was decorated. He was a demolitions expert who taught mine warfare at West Point Military Academy during summer training in 1959. He was a member of the American Legion Post 15 of Sumter. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, having served on the staff there from 1979 until retirement in 1988. He was a member of the FaHoLo Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one stepson, Bill Otto of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Beverly Singleton and Barbara Schwetzke, both of Sumter; twin granddaughters, Mandy and Brandy Singleton, both of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Cline of Warminster, Pa., and Ruth Overdorf of Avis, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Martha McGill; and two brothers, Richard and Donald Heverly.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at the Trinity United Methodist Church with full military honors with the Rev. Stephen Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 210 Best St.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to a charity of one's choice.

The family had chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

WINNIE N. POLITE

Mrs. Winnie Nelson Polite entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Winnie Nelson Polite was a daughter of the late Mr. George Nelson and Mrs. Dora Nelson. In her youth, she attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. Twice married , Mrs. Polite was first married to the late Mr. Charlie Polite and secondly to Mr. James Bradford.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories her children; three sons, Mr. William Polite and his wife, Marie, and Mr. Clarence Bradford, both of Sumter, and Mr. Robert Bradford of Plant City, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. Theola Wilson and her husband, John, Mrs. Annie Mae Wells, Mrs. Helen Prince and her husband, Ervin, all of Sumter, and Mrs. Amy Wilder of Long Beach, N.Y.; one adopted daughter, Mrs. Inez Taylor of Manning; 53 grandchildren; and 100 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, and assisting by the Rev. M.G. Walters. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and other times at the home, 3580 Britton-Brogdon Road, Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

ELLA GRANT-BENJAMIN

Ella Grant-Benjamin, 93, widow of David Benjamin Sr., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 17, 1911, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Grant Sr. and Fannie Caesar Grant.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 190 S. Brick Church Road, Gable, SC 29051.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

PERCY J. MARTINS

MANNING -- Percy Joseph Martins, 77, husband of Edith Elizabeth Cowins Martins, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 4, 1926, in Georgetown, British Guiana, he was a son of the late Cyril and Clara Cabral Martins. He was retired assistant principal of Berkshire Farm Center in Canaan, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Summerton.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Shaw of Warrenton, Va.; three sons, Stephen Richard "Skip" Martins of Hudson, N.Y., Thomas Scott Martins of Chatham, N.Y., and Daniel John Martins of Greenville; a sister, Joyce Somers of Santa Monica, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

ELENORA B. DAVIS

Funeral services for Elenora Benjamin Davis were held Monday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home. The Rev. Leroy T. James officiated.

Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by four sisters, Rosa Green, Susan Romeo, Pear Parker and Mary McKnight.

FRANK JOHNSON

Mr. Frank Johnson, of 963 Houck St., passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home.

Funeral plans are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

MARY C. SNYDER

Mary Cuttino Snyder, 97, widow of Dr. W.J.Snyder Jr., died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at her lake home on Lake Marion.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Charles Lynum Cuttino and Marguerite Tindal Cuttino. Mrs. Snyder was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Santee Summer Ministry. She was a graduate of Converse College and attended graduate school at the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi sorority. She studied art at Columbia University in New York.

Mrs. Snyder completed studies and became a master gardener at 92 years of age. She was the author of the book "Swan Lake Gardens and Mr. Bland."

Surviving are one son, W.J. "Jimmy" Snyder III and wife, Cissy Griffin Snyder, of Sumter; one daughter, Betsy S. Acken and husband, John M. Acken, of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edwin C. Cuttino of Sumter; four grandchildren; nd two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Dr. John M. Barr and the Rev. Louis Jamison officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home following the graveside services.

JOE MACK

Elder Joe Mack, 79, husband of Ruthie Mae Copeland-Mack, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 18, 1924, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late Henry and Agnes Coleman Mack.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 724 Warley St., Sumter, and at the home of his daughter, Joann M. Manning, 2143 Kingsbury Drive, Sumter 29154.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

CHARLIE LEE BRACEY

Charlie Lee Bracey, husband of Uther Scarborough Bracey, died at his residence in Sumter on Thursday, April 1, 2004.

Born in Winston Salem, N.C., on May 31, 1932, he was a son of the late Moses J. Bracey and Henretta Carpenter P. Bracey. He was educated in the Sumter school system and was a graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1950. He served his country in the United States Army. He was employed as a shoe repairman at the Dickson Master Shoe Rebuilders in Sumter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Pearson.

Surviving are his wife, Uther Bracey of Laurelton, N.Y.; three sons, Bernard (Eunice) Bracey, Ondrae of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Charlie (Lillian) Bracey Jr. of Fresh Meadow, N.Y.; his sister, Ronetta B. Watson of Sumter; his brothers, Moses J. (Christine) Bracey of York, Pa., and Cyrus L. (Bettie) Bracey of Chicago; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Blassingame officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park.

The funeral procession will leave from the home of his sister, Ronetta B. Watson, 9 Cleveland St., at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers and flower bearers will be the Lincoln High School Class of 1950.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Ronetta B. Watson, 9 Cleveland St., Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

CLEO B. GREEN

OLANTA -- Mrs. Cleo Brown Green, 69, wife of Willie James Green, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

She was born Oct. 19, 1934.

The family will receive friends at 117 Augusta St., Olanta, SC 29114.

Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.

Mr. Robert D. "Bob" Belk, 74, husband of Ida Mae Kolb Belk, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at the St. Lukes Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

ALEX JOHNSON

Alex Johnson, 85, husband of Mary Burgess Johnson, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 23, 1918, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Charlie Johnson and Emma Brand Johnson.

The family will receive friends at his home, 2500 Brogdon Circle, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

BENJAMIN D. JENKINS

COLUMBIA -- Homegoing service for Benjamin Davis Jenkins, 46, of Columbia, will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at Grace Church Ministries Inc.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge.

Mr. Jenkins died on April 1. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Maggie Davis Jenkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was currently employed in telemarketing. He was a faithful member of Grace Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Jenkins; siblings, Diane and Michael DeMary; Avon, Jimmy and Terry Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Christian Church Min. Inc.

RUTH E. PADGETT

Ruth Eleanor Padgett, age 85, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.
