ELLA G. BENJAMIN

Ella Grant Benjamin, 93, widow of David Benjamin Sr., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 17, 1911, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Grant Sr. and Fannie Caesar Grant. She received her formal education at the Goodwill Parochial School, Mayesville. A lifelong member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church, she served on the Presbyterian Women Organization. She was also a member of the Household of Ruth No. 3728.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary (John) Kennedy of the home and Anna Kennedy of Atlanta; one son, Leo (Alfreda) Benjamin of Hyattsville, Md.; one stepson, James Brunson of Philadelphia; 29 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Benjamin and David Benjamin Jr.; three sisters, Hermenia, Sarah and Anna; and one brother, James Grant Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Goodwill Presbyterian Church, USA, Mayesville, with the Rev. Richard Baxter, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough, the Revs. Carnell Hampton and Samuel Sparks.

Burial will be in Goodwill Presbyterian Church, USA, cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 190 S. Brick Church Road, Gable, SC 29051.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

HENRY PRESSLEY

Mr. Henry "Punch" Pressley, 51, husband of Jessie Sanders Pressley, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 21, 1952, in New York City, he was a son of the late James Pressley Sr. and evangelist Mary Keith Pressley. He was a graduate of Hillcrest High School and retired from E.I. DuPont after 29 years of service.

Survivors include three sons, J'Von (Sharnay) Pressley of Lake City, Montrell Pressley of the home and Payton Pressley of Rembert; five brothers, James (Dorothy) Pressley of New York City, Bishop Michael (Linda) Pressley, Edward (Andrea) Pressley, Joseph (Glenda) Pressley and Kenneth (Barbara) Pressley, all of Rembert; two sisters, Altiamae (Leland) Butler of Rembert and Darlene (Jeffrey) McCall of Sumter; his father-in-law, Walter Sanders of Rembert; and three grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Mt. Sinai Holiness Temple, Dinkins Mill Road, Rembert, with Bishop Michael Pressley, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister M. Miller.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sinai Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from his home, 5645 Borden Road, Rembert.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MAXINE JONES CARTER

Maxine Jones Carter, age 59, beloved wife of 32 years to the Rev. Bill Carter, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence on Ramsey Road.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

FLANDER FRIERSON

MANNING -- Flander "Bogan" Frierson, 78, husband of Lee Haley Frierson, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at his home in Manning.

Born Feb. 20, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late Arthur and Emma Hamilton Frierson. He was a retired construction worker, a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and a member of Clarendon Church of God.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two daughters, Janice Carter and Maxine Ridgeway of Manning; three sons, James, Jerry and Marion Frierson, all of Manning; a brother, Eddie Frierson of Sumter; seven sisters, Lee White, Alma Mitchum, Tanner Wilson, Rebecca Rolland and Letha Fleming of Manning, Pansy Stewart of Dublin, Ga., and Betty Mixon of Columbia; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Hopps.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Ronnie Newton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 1116 Falling Road, Manning.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God, P.O. Box 387, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

JAMES F. STEVENS Jr.

James Floyd Stevens Jr., 56, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium.

ALBERT GORDON Sr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Albert Gordon Sr., 69, husband of Georgia Bell Gordon, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at George Washington Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born March 3, 1935, in the Turbeville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eddie "Mossie" Gordon and Mary McFadden Gordon.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Leroy and Sarah Smith, 1306 Hicks Road, Turbeville.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

DAVID LEE GAY Jr.

DALZELL -- David Lee Gay Jr., age 76, husband of 34 years to Myrtle Christine Gay, died on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Lanett, Ala., a son of the late Wilma Lee Weldon Williams and David Lee Gay Sr. He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the Georgia Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was vice commander of Island X I Navy Seabees. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 3034 and the American Legion Post 15. He was a devoted father and grandfather and was a member of the Shaw Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Paul Anthony Gay and his wife, Kristin, of Dalzell; one daughter, Tracy Gay of Pawleys Island; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Barfield Gay; a stepfather, John Frank Williams Jr.; two sons, David Lee Gay III and John Frank Gay; and one stepdaughter, Tina Aileen Trout.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. Burial will follow in the Church of the Holy Cross cemetery in Stateburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Shaw Heights Baptist Church "Bus Fund, " 2030 Peach Orchard Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

SUSIE MAE G. NELSON

PHILADELPHIA -- Susie Mae Gilyard Nelson, age 91, widow of Jule Nelson, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Temple Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born March 5, 1913, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Isam and Rebecca McFadden Gilyard.

The family will receive friends at the home, 3 Session St., Summerton, beginning Thursday.

Services will be announced by Dyson's Home for Funerals of Summerton.

JOE MACK

Elder Joe Mack, 79, husband of Ruthie Mae Copeland Mack, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 18, 1924, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late Henry and Agnes Coleman Mack. His early Christian training was received at St. Peter AME Church in Mayesville. He was appointed pastor at St. John Apostolic Holiness Church, Sumter, where he served until his death.

Survivors include his stepmother, Louise Mack of Sumter; one son, Clifton (Shirley) Mack of Manning; seven daughters, JoAnn (Norman) Manning, Bettie Mack-Robinson, Evelyn Davis, Jacqueline (Minister John H.) Turner, Vandretiss Sharper-Fanning, all of Sumter, Denease (John E.) Grinnell of Columbia and Renae (Garland) Brown of Elgin; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry (Pennie) Mack of New York City; one stepsister, Berlie Taylor and one stepbrother, Carnell Spann, both of Lynchburg; three stepsons, William Copeland, Herbert Copeland Jr. and Leroy (Gail) Copeland, all of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Cynthia Copeland and Deborah Copeland, both of Sumter, and Joann Copeland of the home; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Benjamin Mack; two sisters, Emma Mack and Albertus Favor.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, and Bishop Tommie Doe officiating, assisted by Ministers Terry Law and John Turner.

Burial will be in Mayesville cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 724 Warley St., Sumter, and at the home of his daughter, JoAnn M. Manning, 2143 Kingsbury Drive, Sumter.

MATTIE B. MURPHY

Mrs. Mattie Blanding Murphy was the widow of Mr. John Murphy and the daughter of the late Mr. Willie Blanding and Mrs. Marie Blanding. Mrs. Murphy was born in Clarendon County on Jan. 20, 1925.

She attended the public schools in Clarendon County. After moving to New York, she joined Holy House of Prayer in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served on the usher board. She later moved back to South Carolina and became a faithful member of Green Hill Baptist Church until her health failed.

On Saturday, April 3, 2004, Mrs. Mattie B. Murphy passed at the Hopewell Healthcare Center in Sumter.

Survivors include one sister, Louise Dargan of Sumter; one niece, Shirley M. Davis of Sumter; three nephews, William Dargan and wife, Elouise, of Connecticut, James Dargan of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ambrose Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu with the Rev. James Hudley, pastor, and assisting will be the Rev. W.J. Frierson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Procession will leave from the home of her niece, Mrs. Shirley M. Davis, 36 W. Red Bay, Sumter, at 2:15 p.m. Friday.

The family is receiving visitors at the home of her niece also.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ANNIE L. WALKER

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Mrs. Annie Lucky Walker, widow of Mr. Elvin Walker and the daughter of the late Mrs. Geneva L. Thompson, was born June 15, 1950, in Sumter. Mrs. Walker departed this life on Friday, April 2, 2004, at the Forsyth Medical Center.

Survivors include two devoted sons, Sean C. Walker and Kevin T. Walker, both of Winston-Salem; one grandson, Master Kri'Sean Walker of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Elizabeth Carter of Baltimore and Francine Weeks of Wilmington, Del.; and one brother, Petty Officer Michael B. Lucky and his wife, Cheryl, of NAS Lemoore, Calif.; one additional sister-in-law, Evelena Lucky of Sumter; two aunts; two uncles; a special cousin, Isiazetta "Penny" Rajah; two devoted cousins, Mrs. Willie Mae Washington and Mrs. Irene L. Harris, both of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Lucky Jr.

Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Clark S. Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. Willie E. Martin officiated. Burial was in the New Evergreen cemetery, Winston-Salem.
