MAXINE J. CARTER

Maxine Jones Carter, age 59, beloved wife of 32 years to the Rev. Bill Carter, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Carter was born in Lake City the daughter of the late Rev. Max Duncan and Myrtie Cole Jones. She was an outstanding pianist and a lifetime member of the gospel group The Jones Trio. Mr. and Mrs. Carter won the Sumter County Foster Parents of the Year award and were nominated for the South Carolina Foster Parents of the Year award. She was a member of the Boulevard Church of the Nazarene and a former Sunday school teacher and youth leader.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Nelson Villarino and his wife, Lesley, and David Villarino, all of Orlando, Fla., and Kirk Carter of Sumter; two daughters, Lisa Ingram and her husband, Gene, and Tajane Carter, all of Sumter; one brother, Tom Jones and his wife, Rose, of Dallas; two sisters, Carolyn LaPointe of Orlando, Fla., and Grace Stump of Sumter; seven grandchildren, David Villarino Jr., Daniel Villarino, Amber Villarino, Emily Day, Hunter Day, Shelby Ingram and Jacob Ingram.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Watts and the Rev. Billy Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mark Stump, Ty Abney, Chris Abney, Jimmy LaPointe, Archie McLeod, Michael Day and Morris Howard

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence on Ramsey Road.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

SHAWN TYE-REESE LOWERY

Memorial service for Infant Shawn Tye-Reese Lowery was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Myrtle Beach.

Born April 5, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, he was the infant son of Lanel Conyers and Shawn-Ta Lowery.

LUCILLE W. McKNIGHT

Mrs. Lucille Woods McKnight, the daughter of the late Mr. Willie Woods and Mrs. Viola Smith Woods, was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Clarendon County. She departed this life on Wednesday morning, April 7, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. McKnight was married to the late Mr. Madison "Doc" McKnight and to their union four children were born. Early in her life, she joined Green Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the missionary society.

Survivors include three daughters, Lucinda Benjamin of Manhattan, N.Y., Mary Kennedy of Baltimore and Mamie M. Hilton of Manning; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Madison McKnight Jr.; two grandchildren, Melvin and Derrick; four brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Green Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James Hudley, pastor, assisting by the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, the Rev. W.J. Frierson, the Rev. Esterlene Bethune and the Rev. E. Sweat. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JAMES E. WOODS

Mr. James E. Woods, of 228 Murphy St., died Monday, March 29, 2004, in the Glade General Hospital in Palm Beach, Fla.

Born Feb. 7, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. Willie Woods and Mrs. Viola Smith Woods. Mr. Woods was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was employed as a truck driver for Williams Furniture/Georgia Pacific for many years until he retired. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a medal of victory (Asiatic-Pacific Medal).

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Woods of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sons, Harold Johnson and wife, Cathereen, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Monroe Johnson of Belle Glade, Fla.; and one brother, Sammie Woods of Detroit.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. L. Newson. Burial will follow in Green Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Alcolu.

Procession will leave from Community Funeral Home, 353 Manning Ave., at 12:15 p.m.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DONNA J. ALLEN

Donna Jeneen Allen, 44, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Chicago, she was a daughter of Jack Lashley and Elaine Cartwright Lashley.

Survivors besides her father of Huntsville, Ala., and her mother of Nashville include three sons, Lenell Allen, Carlton Allen and Chris Allen, all of Sumter; one brother, Darrick Lashley of Nashville; one sister, Jacklyn Lashley-McIntosh of Charlottesville, Va.; and three nephews, Darrick Lashley II, Carlin Moore and Ian Lashley.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Raynard Allen officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

FRANK JOHNSON

Mr. Frank Johnson, of 963 Houck St., passed away at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, on April 4, 2004.

He was the widower of Mrs. Nora Watson Johnson and was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Pinewood, to the late Mr. Jinky and Lila "Sis" Johnson. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Pinewood.

Survivors include two sons, Linzy Holland and Marvin Johnson and his wife, Gloria, both of Sumter; a daughter, Helene Johnson Clark of Sumter; two brothers, Herbert Johnson and his wife, Mary, of Sumter and Charlie Johnson of Pinewood; two sisters, Lila Mae Pugh of Pinewood and Ethel Pugh of Somerville, Mass.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Timmons, assisting by the Rev. Vernon Holland. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving visitors at the home, 963 Houck St., Sumter.

Procession will leave from the home at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

RAEKWAN GUEST

MANNING -- Raekwan Guest, 4, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born May 27, 1999, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Lalesha Guest and Sha-Ron Moody.

The family will receive friends at the home of his great-grandmother, Marie Oscar Guest, 1122 Peacock St., Silver community, Manning.

Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

MINNIE MAE J. HOLLIDAY

Minnie Mae Johnson Holliday, age 91, wife of the late Roy Daniel Holliday, died on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

She was born in Jefferson, Ga., a daughter of the late Jeremiah Damascus and Leila Drake Johnson. She was the first person hired at Pioneer Manufacturing Co. and worked there for 23 years. She was an avid flower gardener and had been an active member and charter member of the Northside Baptist Church since 1951 and a member of the church circle.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Kaye Holliday of Sumter; two nieces, Geannie Tisdale of Sumter and Janice Just of Calhoun, Ga.; three nephews, Tommy Johnson and Charlie Johnson of Laurens and Doug Johnson of Winder, Ga.; a great-niece, Dee Miller of Sumter; two great-nephews, Marvin "Chip" McMillan and Lee Morgan, both of Sumter; a number of great-great-nieces and nephews; and four special friends, Ruth White, Blanche McGee, Cathy Tisdale and Betty Bramlette.

She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumter cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the niece's residence, 1654 Broome St.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

SADIE LOU W. DUREN

Sadie Lou Wright Duren, 69, died April 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 30, 1934, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Matthew and Cathelee Smith Wright.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Espinosa of Paterson, N.J.; one son, James Duren of Sumter; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Duren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

The family is receiving friends at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday.

ETHEL ROUSE

We regret to announce the passing of Ms. Ethel Rouse, who died on Thursday, April 8, 2004, after a brief illness. She was the widow of the late Mr. Kirk Rouse.

The family will receive friends at 58 Colonial Circle, Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Commercial Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

RUTH N. PADGETT

Ruth Eleanor Nerbun Padgett, age 85, wife of the late Frederick F. Padgett, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Mrs. Padgett was born on April 22, 1918, in Niagara, Wis., the daughter of the late George and Ida Nerbun. She grew up in northern Wisconsin and Michigan. After moving to Sumter in 1967, she became an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and the St. Anne's Women's Club. She also was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and was active in the Shepherd's Center.

Survivors are two sons, Rick Padgett and his wife, Lorraine, of Southlake, Texas, and Paul Padgett of Peachtree City, Ga.; two daughters, Connie Tietz and her husband, Paul, of Kent, Wash., and Pat Sears and her husband, Tommy, of Murrells Inlet; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Paul Francis Padgett; two brothers, Donald and Lawrence Nerbun; and one sister, Mae Fern Sharkus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church with Father Alistair McKay C.SS.R. officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

A wake service will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Bullock Funeral Home, with the vigil service at 7 p.m.
