Letha M. Ramsey
November 8, 2006

Letha M. Ramsey, 83, of Newberry, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2006 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Ms Ramsey was born on Aug. 27, 1924 in Portsman, WV, a daughter of the late Lee Charles and Della Sue Ramsey. She was the former owner and waitress of a restaurant and store in Dillion. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her three daughters, Lila L. Norton of Newberry, Dean Ramsey of Mullins, and Diane Hall of High Point, NC; eight grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Franklin Haithcock.
Graveside funeral services were conducted 12:00 Noon Saturday at Tabor Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Walter Green.
The family was at the residence of her grandson, Billy Joe Norton, Sr., 196 Compass Dr., Newberry.
Active pallbearers were her grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home, 1330 Kinard St., Newberry SC 29108.

W. Stacey Couch
November 4, 2006

W. Stacey Couch, 44, of 1784 Bush River Rd., Newberry, died Saturday, November 4, 2006.
Mr. Couch was born May 10, 1962, in Laurens, a son of James Broadus Couch and Margaret Judith Barnette Goodman. He was a retired carpenter.
He is survived by his mother of Newberry; his father of Jalapa; a daughter, April Michelle Couch of Pensacola, FL; a sister, Susan Hendrix of Newberry; two brothers, Carl Couch and Cameron Couch both of Newberry.
Graveside funeral services was conducted at 11:00 AM Friday in Rosemont Cemetery.

Anne Wilson (Annie Ruth) Whitener
November 5, 2006

Anne Wilson (Annie Ruth) Whitener, widow of Guy Vanderbilt Whitener, Jr., passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Visitation for Mrs. Whitener will be Monday, November 6, 2006 at her residence 2323 Wells Park Drive at 6:00 P.M. Funeral services were conducted at Central United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. Interment did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family did further celebrate Mrs. Whitener’s life at her residence following the burial.
Mrs. Whitener is survived by two daughters, Stuart Whitener Kennemore and her husband Paul of Greenwood, SC, and Leslie Ann Whitener of Hilton Head Island, SC; a grandson, Paul Hampton Kennemore, III, DMD and his wife Kim of Moore, SC and a sister-in-law Billie Wilson of Belton, SC.
She was the daughter of the late William Mark Wilson and Annie Louise Pitts Wilson Plowden. She was also predeceased by her step-father, Stuart Plowden, who she was extremely close to, and her brother, William Sloan Wilson.
Mrs. Whitener was born on September 1, 1925 in Greenwood County and graduated from Greenwood High School and Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing. She met and married Guy Whitner, Jr. and lived in Newberry the rest of her life.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She was active in the Green Thumb Garden Club and loved playing bridge and shaghai. She and her late husband were extremely involved with Tennessee Walking Horses and they had many memorable times at their Isle of Palms home. She was, if nothing else, a gracious hostess, a loving wife, mother, and “Nana” to her only grandchild Hampton.

Jane Grimison Riggin
November 3, 2006

Jane Grimison Riggin, 75, of 2023 Main St., died Friday, November 3, 2006 at her residence. Her smile shone on all those around her and brought joy to everyone.
She was born on December 18, 1930 in Allentown, PA and was a daughter of the late Edwin Douglas and Estelle Wissinger Grimson. Jane was a retired first grade teacher with Newberry Academy, educating children for over 25 years. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, a member of the Church Choir, a volunteer and volunteer coordinator for the Newberry Opera House. She was a past president of the Newcomer Club, Fine Arts Club and Newberry College Faculty Women’s Club.
Mrs. Riggin is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Ione Riggin of Newberry; two sons, Douglas Staunton Riggin of Buffalo, NY and Thomas Hancock Riggin of Irmo; three sisters Cecil Woodman Thompson of Huntington, L. I., NY, Ruth Woodman Czar, Paultney, Vt and Ann Woodman Shoemaker of Indian Springs, AL; three grandchildren, Ryan Riggin, Jeffery Riggin and Sarah Elizabeth Mei Riggin. She was predeceased by her parents, her foster parents, H. Staunton and Cecil Cornwall Woodson, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grimison and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wissinger. Jane lived life with an immeasurable zest. Her spirit, fight, and determination knew no bounds, and her dignity and heart have been a inspiration beyond understanding. She smiled on every one. The Lord is her Shepherd.
Funeral services were conducted 2:00 PM Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 4:30 to 6:30 PM Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Bob Dawkins, Billy Gibson, Hiram Mersereau, Mike Davenport, Pete Greenlaw, Jim Lander, Benjie Chapman and John Paul Whitaker. Honorary pallbearers were the Faculty of Newberry Academy, Newberry Opera House Volunteers, Jane and Charles Ragland, Judith Mersereau, Sylvia Gibson, Harriett Haltiwanger, Kay McEntire, Katie Davenport, Martha “Mot” Derrick, Debra Smith and Mary Helen Dawkins.
The family suggests memorials be made to Newberry Academy, 2055 Smith Rd. Newberry, SC 29108, Newberry Opera House P.O. Box 357, Newberry, SC 29108 or Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, P.O. Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108

Thomas E. Ringer, Jr.
Thursday, December 28, 2006

Thomas E. Ringer, Jr., 84, of 3240 Pine Belt Road, Columbia, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Providence Hospital.
He was born on February 23, 1922 in Pomaria, a son of the late Thomas E. and Ola Mae Miller Ringer. He was a 1942 graduate of Newberry College. He was a WWII Army veteran having served in both the Philippines and Papa New Guinea. He retired from the State of S.C. as an Assistant Commissioner with the Vocational Rehabilitation Department.
He was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church, where he was a Congregational Council member; American Legion Post #6; the National Rehabilitation Association and he was a volunteer for the Lutheran Family Services.
Mr. Ringer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, was married to the late Louanna Parrott Ringer. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lou R. and Dennis Shumate of Columbia; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Ringer, III of Spartanburg and Keith W. and Mary Ringer of Columbia; six grandchildren, Robert E. Morgan, Brian D. Morgan, Laurie R. (Rev. Phillip) Coggins, Bradford T. Ringer, Christopher W. Ringer and AnnaMarie C. Ringer; a great granddaughter, Carter O. Coggins; and two half-brothers, Richard Ringer and Hoyt Ringer both of Pomaria. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Ellen Caldwell Ringer two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Columbia by the Rev. Dr. Mary Anderson, Rev. Phillip Coggins, and the Rev. Dr. James C. Parham, III. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 6:00 PM Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and 4:00 to 6:00 PM Saturday at the Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine St. Chapel in Columbia. The family will be at his residence, 3240 Pine Belt Road, Columbia.
Memorials may be made to the Louanna P. Ringer Memorial Music Scholarship, Newberry College, 2100 College St., Newberry SC 29108 or to the Vision 2021 Fund, Incarnation Lutheran Church, 3005 Devine St., Columbia SC 29205-1843.
Active pallbearers were Lamar Brown, Bob Dawkins, Joe Dusenbury, Roger Caldwell, William Corder, Jimmy Morgan, John Paul Whitaker, and Jack Whitesides.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Eddie Williams, III and staff, and to the staff at Providence Hospital for their professional care and compassion.

Audrey Senn Senn
December 24, 2006

Audrey Senn Senn, 86, of 6557 Belfast Rd, Newberry, widow of Frank M. Senn, Sr., died Sunday, December 24, 2006 at Palmetto Richland Hospital.
Mrs. Senn was born on September 12, 1920 in Newbery Co. a daughter of the late W. O. “Oak” and Lelia McTeer Senn. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, the U.M.W. and was a member of the U.D.C.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank M. (Jr.) and Sandy Senn and Charles D. and Ann K. Senn, all of Newberry; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy S. and Dr. Mike Bailey of Macon, GA; eight grandchildren, Todd Senn, Paige (Charles) Griffen, Jennifer Senn, Scott (Stephanie) Senn, Chad (Melonie) Senn, Lori Senn, Alicia (Robert) David, and Cathy (Martin) Vice; and four great grandchildren, Bailey Morgan and Samuel Scott Vice, Corelli Anne David, and Talen Rain Senn. She was predeceased by a brother, McTeer Senn.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday in Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Hugh Bickley. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1167 Trinity Church Road, Newberry SC 29108.

Helen Thacker Rogers
December 19, 2006

Mary Helen Rogers, 76, of 904 F Suber Dr., Newberry, widow of Fred W. Rogers, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on December 24, 1929 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late John Thacker and Carrie Gussie Ann Davis.
At an early age, she joined Flint Hill Baptist Church and was a very active member of the Esther Chapter #410, Eastern Star and the Women Home Aid Society. She later joined the New Faith Baptist Church where she served as a mother in the church, a member of the Missionary and the Senior Choir. She was a retired care giver and was longtime employee of Roy and Toots Whitaker and Charles Cromer.
She leaves to celebrate her golden life are sons, Robert L. (Margaret) Goree and John W. Rogers, Sr. all of Newberry, Freddie (Carolyn) Rogers of Columbia, John O. Suber of High Point, NC, Fred W. (Jackie) Rogers of Washington , DC, and James (Virginia) Rogers of Loris; daughters, Carrie Clark, Carolyn (Johnnie) Rogers-Rutherford, and Ruby Langford all of Newberry, Brunell (Ernest) Gallman of Columbia, and Sallie Ann Rogers of Winston-Salem, NC; 47 grandchildren including a loving and devoted granddaughter, Jameka Glymp of Newberry ; 51 great grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her children who preceded her in death are two daughters, Amelia Rogers and Patricia Blunt and a grandson, Ricky Eleazar. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 PM, Sunday at Flint Hill Baptist Church in Whitmire by Bishop Emanuel Spearman. Interment was in church Cemetery.
The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann Chaples Mackin “Sam” Price
December 12, 2006

Entered into eternal rest the morning of December 12, 2006, Shirley Ann Chaples Mackin “Sam” Price, wife of James Steven Price, residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James Steven Price were invited to attend the funeral services of the latter at Bethel United Methodist Church Friday, December 15, 2006, at ten-thirty o’clock. Interment did take place at four o’clock in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry, SC. Friends did call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, Thursday between five and seven o’clock.
Ms. Mackin Price was born April 5, 1949, in Lowell, Massachusetts, the daughter of Edward Johnson Chaples and Irma Sartori Chaples. “Sam” was a graduate of The University of Florida. She retired as a Corporate Executive with Sears Roebuck and Company in Chicago, Orlando and Atlanta. She was a real estate broker in Atlanta. In Charleston, she was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Chancel Guild, the WOW Women’s Sunday School Class and the coordinator of the Volunteers. She was the 2006 Winner of the Denman Evangelism Award for the State of South Carolina and was the Events coordinator for Miami Edison High School Class of 1967 Alumni.
She is survived by her husband of Charleston, SC; three children, Jefferey Bradford Mackin of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Paige Price White of Atlanta, GA, and Lauren Price Harris of Charlotte, NC; three sisters, Irene Chaples of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Phyllis Putnam of Orlando, FL, and Eve Price Powell of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Corey Steven White, Caleb Forrester Harris and Ava Jade Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her dynamic personality, her dedication to family, friends, church, and her creative and humanitarian efforts endeared her to many.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or Pet Helpers, 1430 Folly Road, James Island, SC 29412.
