JAMES LEWIS

HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- James Lewis, of Hyattsville, Md., died Sunday, May 9, 2004.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Minnie Mae Lewis; two sons; one grandson; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 6110 Princes Garden Parkway, Lanham, Md.

CHARLES S. COUNCIL Jr.

PHILADELPHIA -- Charles "Yandy" Sasor Council Jr., 65, died May 7, 2004, at his residence, 1317 W. Eleanor St., Philadelphia.

Born Nov. 6, 1938, in Rembert, S.C., he was a son of the late Charles Sasor Council Sr. and Sallie Moses Council. He was a graduate of Ebenezer High School. While attending school, he was on the basketball team and drove the school bus for a period of time. He was employed by the military academy in Camden until relocating to Philadelphia, where he worked as a chef for 41 years. Spiritually, he had accepted Christ as his personal savior.

Survivors include four children, Anthony Bernard Council (Ada), Darren F. Council (Sharon), Charles Sasor Council III and Patricia Council Vappie (Michael); a special granddaughter, "Lakeeba" Witherspoon; three other granddaughters; five grandsons; four brothers, Julian Hill (Myrtle), Ralph Council (Martha), Dr. Douglas M. Council (Marie) and Tex Council (Mary); four sisters, Sallie C. Boykin (Herbert), Alice B.C. Witherspoon (Erthlay), Edna Council and Eva M. Council; one uncle, Harvin Moses; two aunts, Adele M. Moses and Florence R. Moses; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Houston "Luggie" Council and Edsol Council.

A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony L. Taylor, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Willie D. Dennis Sr. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister, Alice Council (Erthlay) Witherspoon, 1040 State St., Sumter, SC 29153.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

CORINE S. RANSOM

REMBERT -- Mrs. Corine Spann Ransom, 58, of 6670 Danielm Taylor Lane, Rembert, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Pine Grove AME Church, Rembert. Burial will be in Sandhill cemetery, Rembert.

Haile's Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

DAISY BELLE D. ALFORD

Daisy Belle Dixon Alford, wife of Hampton Alford, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born in Lee County on June 8, 1926, she was a daughter of the late John Dixon and Lucinda Boyd Dixon. Raised in Lee County, she was a member of Cousar Memorial Presbyterian Church in Bishopville and graduated from Dennis Elementary and High School. She also graduated from Stillman High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with an associate degree in English. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Morris College, a master's degree in education from S.C. State College and completed further study toward her doctorate degree in early childhood education from New York University. Mrs. Alford taught in Sumter School District 17 for more than 22 years and worked in both the Berkeley County, St. Stephens District schools. She was a faithful member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she was director of the Mt. Pisgah kindergarten program, member of Stewardess Board No. 3, Ever-ready Club, missionary society, Golden Age Society and director of religious education. She was also a Fannie Ivey Girl Scout leader. Her organizational affiliations included Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha (Eta, Zeta, Omega Chapter) Sorority, S.C. Teachers Association, National Education Association and the National Council of Negro Women (life member).

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Thomas and Mattie Mae Chestnut; and two brothers, Woodrow Dixon and Leon Dixon.

Surviving are her husband, Hampton Alford of the home; sons, Dr. George Alford of Bermuda, Lt. Col. Garnel Alford of San Antonio, Ellison Alford of Mullins, Robert Perkins of Bishopville and Harry Young of New Carrington, Md.; daughters, Katie Furman of Clinton, Md., and Janie Dixon of New York City; two sisters: Johnnie Mae Bell and Bettye A. Lynn, both of Atlanta; three brothers, Dr. Robert L. Dixon of Atlanta, Leroy Dixon of Bishopville and Richard E. Dixon of Westminster, Md.; and one granddaughter, Nikki Alford.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Juenarrl Keith, officiating.

Mrs. Alford will be placed in the church for viewing at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Hillside Memoral Park.

An Ivey Beyond the Wall service will be held 6 p.m. today at the Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to The Kidney Foundation or the Dixon, Scott, Boyd Family Scholarship Fund.

The family will recieve friends at the home of Hampton Alford, 112 S. Purdy St. in Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

GERALD LOGAN

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Gerald Logan, 59, of Pensacola, passed away on May 13, 2004.

He is survived by his wife Julia; two children, Vince Logan and Tracy LaChance of Stockbridge, Ga.; two stepsons, Shawn and Thomas St. Clair of Pensacola; four grandchildren; two sisters, Diane Ratcliffe and Pam Price; and two brothers, Jimmy Logan and Dennis Logan.

A memorial service will be held in Pensacola.

JULIUS A. EADON Jr.

LEXINGTON -- Julius Alton Eadon Jr., 68, husband of Jo Anne "Jody" Cook Eadon, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his home in Lexington.

Born Feb. 24, 1936, in Kingstree, he was a son of Camilla Plowden Eadon and the late Julius Alton Eadon Sr. He was a real estate appraiser and a member of Edmund First Baptist Church in Pelion.

Surviving besides his mother of Orangeburg and wife of Lexington are a daughter, Darlye Hert and husband, Roger, of Simpsonville; six sons, Julius Alton Norris of Columbia, Montgomery Eadon of Atlanta, Ga., Chris Eadon of Lexington, Ronald Robinson, Brian Robinson and Dean Robinson, all of Lexington; a sister, Camille Daniel of Summerville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with Pastor Johnny Slice officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

RICHARD EARL LUDD

Richard Earl Ludd, 43, of Sumter, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at 50 Larkin St.

Mr. Ludd was born Nov. 30, 1960, in Sumter, a son of Willie Louise Ludd and the late Inez Prince Ludd. He was married to Lillie Goodman Ludd.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Deloris Green, 3352 Ebenezer Road, Dalzell.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home.

ALICE CAPERS WISE

Alice Capers Wise, daughter of the late Ellison and Lydia Davis Capers and wife of Billy King Wise, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at her residence in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Local arrangements will be announced by the staff of James Funeral Home Inc.

MARY FAYE 'MERIFAYE' LEWIS

PAXVILLE – Mary Faye "Merifaye" Lewis, 54, wife of John Henry Lewis Jr., died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at her home in Paxville.

Born Nov. 28, 1949, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Nellie Tobias Holladay. She was a homemaker and substitute teacher at Clarendon Hall and was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church, where she was the first lady trustee, a Sunday school teacher, assistant treasurer and a member of the Parsonage Committee.

Surviving besides her husband of Paxville are a daughter, Jennifer Lewis Jones and husband, Jay, of Sumter; a son, John Henry "Jay" Lewis III, of Paxville; two special grandsons, John Henry Lewis IV, and Tyler Lewis Jones; five sisters, Carolyn Spigner and husband, Ralph, of Columbia, Marian Jordan and husband, Charlie, of Durham, N.C., Judy Rogers and husband, Bill, Joyce Hardy and husband, George, and Lynn Holladay, all of Manning; a brother, Wayne Holladay and wife, Edith, of Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Paxville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Broomall officiating.

Burial will follow in Paxville cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence. Memorials can be made to Clarendon Hall Memorial Fund, P.O. FLORENCE -- Ellaree Foster Lowery, widow of John Lowery, died May 15, 2004, at Carolina Hospital Systems.

JAMES A. NESBITT

James Allison Nesbitt, age 60, beloved husband of Judy McClam, died on Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Lee County the son of the late Rev. Martin Luther Nesbitt and Bertha Louise Herrington Nesbitt. He was owner and operator of J&N Vinyl and retired from Campbell Soup with 26 1/2 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Alex Green of Sumter and Derrick McClam of Sumter; four daughters, Terry Burgess of Sumter, Wendy Evans of New Zion, Dana Allison Medlock of Edgefield and Ronda Faye Nesbitt of Columbia; three brothers, Jimmy Van Nesbitt of Andrews, Rufus Nesbitt of Early Branch and Herbert Nesbitt of Mississippi; two sisters, Mary Walford of Sumter and Betty Jean McCollum of Bamburg; 12 grandchildren, Mairah McClam, Clay McClam, Andrew Medlock, Madlyn Medlock, Susan Medlock, Bridgett Green, Brittany Green, Jessie Green, Brandon Burgess, Mikey Evans, April Evans and Heather Evans.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Nesbitt and the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

EARL B. SMITH Jr.

Earl "BJ" Barry Smith Jr. died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born Sept. 11, 1983, in Sumter, Early "BJ" Barry Smith Jr. was a son of Earl Barry Smith Sr. and Barbara Polk Smith. "BJ" was a graduate of Crestwood High School and a student of Central Carolina Technical College. He was employed at Sycamore Video.

"BJ" was preceded in death by his grandfather, Willie Smith.

Survivors in addition to his parents include one sister, Pamalyn "Mandi" R. Smith; grandparents, Christopher and Catherine Polk of Pinewood; and Earline Smith of Sumter; five aunts, Wendy (David) Jackson and Brenda (Harold) Myers, both of Sumter, Tonya L. Polk and Jennifer Deon (Harold) Singleton of Pinewood and Delores (Billy) West of Landover, Md.; nine uncles, Kris Roshawn Polk and Brian Polk of Pinewood, Anthony (Elizabeth) Polk, Larry (Patricia) Smith, Reginald (Vivian) Smith, Russell (Pamalyn) Smith, Timothy (Karen) Smith, all of Sumter, Bruce (Rosa) Polk of Patterson, N.J., and Giles (Alicia) Smith of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 2280 Thomas Sumter Highway, Sumter.

The family will receive friends at 2630 Yank Haven Drive, Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JACOB L. NUNAMAKER III

MANNING -- Jacob L. Nunamaker III, 67, husband of Margaret Weeks Nunamaker, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory in Manning.
