ADAM YOUNG

Adam Young, 52, died May 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 17, 1951, in Sumter County, he was a son of Robert Young and Mary Heyward Young.

The family will receive friends at the home, 6765 Camden Highway, Rembert.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

STEPHEN B. KENNEDY

LYNCHBURG -- Mr. Stephen Benard Kennedy, son of the late Wilson and Ethellene Kennedy, was born July 20, 1939, in Lynchburg. He departed this life on May 15, 2004, at Wilson Medical Center in Darlington.

He attended the Lee County public schools. Mr. Kennedy moved to Baltimore at an early age, where he worked as a construction worker. Stephen was united in holy matrimony to the late Ella Mae Kennedy.

One daughter preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memories five daughters, Mrs. Rosetta Spann McPherson (Larry) of Lamar, Mrs. Ella Marie Johnson (Kenneth) of Baltimore, Ms. Virginia Gail Kennedy of Baltimore, Mrs. Ethelene Williford (Anthony) of Baltimore, and Ms. Stephan Kennedy of Baltimore; four sons, Mr. Johnny Kennedy (Susie) of Baltimore, Mr. Stephen Benard Kennedy Jr. (Donna) of Baltimore, Mr. Cedrick Kennedy (Earthie) of Bishopville and Mr. Daryle Kennedy of Myrtle Beach; four sisters, Mrs. Lela K. Peoples of Baltimore, Mrs. Willa Mae McDonald (Wilbert) of Lynchburg, Mrs. Madgalene Tyler of Baltimore, and Mrs. Barbara K. Felder of Charleston; two brothers, Mr. Wilson E. Kennedy Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mr. Marvin Kennedy of Sumter; 26 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday from the Warren Chapel United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Rufus Snowden officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Fullard, Minister E. Spann and the Rev. C. Duren. Burial in the Hawkins cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rosetta and Larry McPherson, 1311 Davis St., Lamar.

Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family.

JERRY L. PRINCE

MANNING -- Jerry Leroy Prince, 81, died May 19, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 13, 1922, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Sammy Whack and Alma Davis Prince and stepson of the late Isaac Prince. He received his formal education at Goodwill School in Manning. In his youth, he joined Holly Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Latana Roofing Co. in West Palm Beach, Fla., as a roofer.

Survivors include four sons, Leroy (Frances) Prince Jr. of Baltimore, Roosevelt (Barbara) Prince of Lantana, Fla., Thomas Prince of Sumter and Willie (Juliette) Prince of Sumter; eight daughters, Florence (Joseph) Kinder of Norwalk, Conn., Frances (Bishop Willie M.) Allen of Cario, Ga., Elizabeth (Leslie "Snoody") Heyward of Manning, Rhunette (Charlie) Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., Dorothy Ann Prince of Hollywood, Fla., Joann (Howard) Wilson and Louise Prince, both of Manning, and Francine (Kenneth) Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; several grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, a daughter and a son.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fourth Crossroad Missionary Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam W. Whack Jr., the Rev. Henry McCray and Bishop Willie M. Allen. Burial will be in Hunter cemetery.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Leslie "Snoody" and Elizabeth Prince Heyward, 825 W. Huggins St., Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ELENORA S. DENNIS

Elenora Skinner Dennis, 88, widow of Harvin Dennis, died May 20, 2004, at Colonial Family Practice, Sumter.

Born May 30, 1915, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Davis Skinner and Eleanor Taylor Skinner.

The family will receive friends at the home, 5600 Borden Road, Rembert (Borden).

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ELIZA STUKES

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Mrs. Eliza Stukes departed this life on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at I. Nova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

She was born in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Flander Blanding and Bessie Sheroid.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Teresa White, 335 South St., Sumter.

MAGGIE S. MOSES

Maggie "Peggy" Shaw Moses, 59, wife of James Moses Jr. of 41 years, died May 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 14, 1944, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Addie Lee Smalls Shaw and the late James Shaw Sr. She was a 1963 graduate of Lincoln High School. To further her education, she completed computer and leadership training at Sumter Area Technical School. She retired from Gold Kist Inc. in December 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia L. Moses-Nedd (Minister Michael D. Nedd) of Woodbridge, Va., and Cassandra L. Moses-Wright (Lorenzo Wright) of Sumter; one sister, Willie Mae Terry (Dennis Sabb); and seven grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Quinn Chapel AME Church, 2400 Queen Chapel Road, Sumter, with the Rev. E. Robert Thomas, officiating eulogist, assisted by Minister Michael D. Nedd, the Rev. Eartha McCloud-Joe and the Rev. Nathaniel Baker.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Floral bearers will be friends and family.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from her home, 30 James St., Sumter.

The family will receive friends at her home, 30 James St., Sumter, and the home of her mother, Addie Lee Smalls Shaw, 1415 Airport Road, Sumter.

The family requested, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Quinn Chapel AME Church Building Fund.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

REETHA A. SMITH

Reetha Abshire Smith, 74, widow of Johnnie F. Smith, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lynn, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late James Abshire and the late Mary Street Abshire. Mrs. Smith was retired from Becton Dickinson.

Surviving are a daughter, Deidre Gillum of Sumter; three sisters, Glendine Stewart of Hawthorne, Fla., Laura Greenwell of California, Md., and Juanita Hutchison of Huntington, W.Va.; a special brother-in-law, Earl Stewart of Hawthorne, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kristen Nunnery and Chelsea Jackson; two special friends, Donna Hamm and Terry Bines.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon, James and Dewey Abshire; and a sister, Margie King.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Bible Church with the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 370 Pearson Road.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

LAURA C. ARD

SUMTER -- Mrs. Laura Correa Ard, 87, of Sumter, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 20, 2004.

She was born in Maui, Hawaii, Dec. 28, 1916, a daughter of Miscel "Joe" and Lucinda Jesus Correa. Mrs. Ard was the manager of El Rancho Motel in Sumter for 35 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Marvin Ard; and her son, William "Micky" Ard.

There will be a graveside service at 4 p.m. Sunday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church cemetery in Moncks Corner.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter beginning at 6 p.m. today in Wadesboro.

Surviving are her daughter and special son-in-law, Lucille and David Burleson, with whom she made her home in Wadesboro; her special daughter-in-law, Sharon Ard of Sumter; her grandchildren, Billy Burleson and wife, Lisa, of Norwood, Denny Burleson of Mooresville, Tammy Sims and husband, Randy, of Marshville, Christy Womack and husband, Ryan, of Wadesboro, Lisa Kimbrell and husband, William, of Sumter; and her great-grandchildren, Jason, Morgan, Brittany, Nathan, Brinley, Brianna, William and Lydia.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro, N.C.

RUTH SHIELDS

Ruth Louise Wilcoxen Shields, age 75, wife of the late William Lloyd Shields, died on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

She was born in Lewiston, Ill., a daughter of the late Vern W. Wilcoxen and Helen Marie Wilhelm Wilcoxen. She was an avid Bible reader, an avid gardener, a member of DAR, and a member of The Ceramics Club. She attended the First Christian Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Ann Elizabeth Shields of Sumter; two brothers, Jack Lee Wilcoxen of Crest Hill, Ill., and James Henry Wilcoxen of Paduka, Ky.; one sister, Patricia Anne Wilcoxen Graham of Joliet, Ill.; one grandchild, Lizabeth Sara Fuller Curlin and her husband, Theron, of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held in Canton, Ill.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

DORA LEE MOTON

Dora Lee Moton, 71, wife of James Moton, died May 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 19, 1933, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Janie Smith Hutley and the late Charlie Hutley.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 529 Dingle St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

REONA C. HODGE

Reona C. Hodge, 87, widow of former Mayor William M. Hodge Sr. died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Platte County, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Christensen and the late Pearl Evans Christensen.

Mrs. Hodge attended school in Newman Grove, Neb., and taught in the rural schools of Madison County. She graduated from the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis. She became part of the 26th General Hospital, which went overseas during World War II to North Africa and Italy. Mrs. Hodge was married in Bari, Italy, where she served with the 26th General Hospital with her husband until the end of the war.

She was organist for Pitts Presbyterian Church for more than 10 years before becoming a member of Grace Baptist Church. Mrs. Hodge had great interest in missions and was Woman's Missionary Union director several years, making numerous trips to Jamaica, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil. She enjoyed gardening and served as president of the Iris Garden Club.

Surviving are three sons, William Miles Hodge Jr. of Sumter, Lawrence Thomas Hodge of Hilton Head Island, Joel Padgett Hodge of Sumter; four daughters, Patricia H. Croft of Sumter, Joanne H. Greer of Lorton, Va., Katherine H. Bledsoe of Aiken, and Eva Marie H. Reynolds of Hendersonville, N.C.; a sister, JoAnne Steele of Harlington, Texas; a nephew, Larry Christensen of Sumter; 16 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler and the Rev. Steve Shumake officiating.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, Carl Vincent Croft, William Hodge Croft, Brian Padgett Hodge, John Hicks Greer Jr., William Miles Hodge III, and Thomas McNair Bledsoe and William Matthew Bledsoe, currently serving with the armed services in Iraq.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alderman Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2274 Graystone.

Memorials may be sent to Woman's Missionary Union for home and foreign missions c/o Grace Baptist Church or a charity of one's choice.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
