Reetha Abshire Smith, 74, widow of Johnnie F. Smith, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

RUTH L. SHIELDS

Ruth Louise Shields, age 75, wife of the late William Lloyd Shields, died on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

She was born in Fulton County, Ill.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

JAMES E. ANDERSON

CAMDEN -- Funeral services for James Edward Anderson, 73, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel with burial to follow in Mt. Hebron Free Will Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Timothy Williams and the Rev. Douglas Edward Anderson will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel.

Mr. Anderson died Wednesday, May 19, 2004. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Heyward Lee and Aime Estelle Brazell Anderson. He was a retired self-employed electrician.

Surviving are children, James Steven Anderson of Camden, Douglas Edward Anderson of Chesterfield, Amy Marie Johnson of Lugoff and David Anderson of Sumter; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Dorothy Floyd, Shirley Suggs, Mary McCathern, all of Sumter, Geraldine Whitley of North Carolina, and Barbara Nesbitt of Camden; brothers, Willie Anderson of Sumter and Bobby Anderson of Camden.

He was predeceased by brothers, Heyward Anderson Jr. and Johnny Anderson.

NATIONAL BURGESS

MANNING -- National "Carl" Burgess, a loving son of the late Occie Burgess of Manning and Willie Mullins of Mullins, and was born on February 28, 1943, in Marion County of Mullins.

On Thursday, May 20, 2004, at 7 a.m., God sent his angels Nellie, Susie Mae, Patricia, Mary Ellen, Wilma, Randy and nephews Rickey and Anthony, to come and bring him home to rest.

He is survived by two sons, Deacon Carl Wesley (wife Deaconess Yvette) Burgess, Nathaniel Earl (wife Darlene) Burgess, and after his marital separation, he was also blessed with a daughter, Caroline; two grandchildren, Christal Schavonna Burgess, and Shateria Marguerite Burgess. He is survived also by his sisters, Zelda Ellerba and Mary Lou Pittman, both of Manning; half-brothers and -sisters, Kate, Bessie, Blondell, Cliff and Jack; and his brother-in-law, Silas "Spank" Blanding; and host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

The remains will be placed at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville Community, Manning, at 10 a.m. Monday.

Services will be at the church at 11 a.m. Monday, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Henry Pressley will be assisting Bishop Richard Johnson officiate.

The family will receive friends at 1034 Vista Lane, the residence.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

EILEEN GAUVREAU

Eileen Marlyn Dunn Gauvreau, age 73, wife of the late Charles William Gauvreau, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, a daughter of the late Michael Edward Dunn and Matilda Marie LaLonde Dunn. She was a former manager with AT&T for 37 years. She was an avid reader, loved to crochet and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a very active member of St. Catherine's LaBoure Church in Wheaton, Md.

Surviving are four sons, William Michael Gauvreau of Jessup, Md., Robert Allen Gauvreau of Sumter, David James Gauvreau of Sumter and Patrick Thomas Gauvreau of Beaufort; one daughter, Linda Gauvreau Fassanella of Middletown, Md.; three brothers, George Dunn, Gerald Dunn and Michael Dunn; three sisters, Delores Pestinger, Verna Bell and Shirley Armstrong; six grandchildren; and a beloved companion, Al Canzoneri.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four brothers, Linus "Eddie" Dunn, David Dunn, James Dunn, Frank Dunn; and five sisters, Eunice Lyons, Laura Ball, Mildred Neil, Vivian Stout and Joan Duke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine's LaBoure Church with Father Morrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Gate of Heaven cemetery in Silver Springs, Md.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's LaBoure Church.

The family will receive friends locally from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105-2479.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

CLARA MAE G. SIMIEN

Clara Mae Greene Simien, 68, widow of Charles J. Simien Sr., died May 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 20, 1935, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Mattie Howard Greene.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 196 Willow St., Mayesville, SC 29104.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ADAM YOUNG

Adam Young, 52, died May 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 27, 1951, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Robert Young Sr. and Mary Dinkins Young. Adam, also known as "Bum," was educated in the Sumter County public schools.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Young Jr. of Temple Hills, Md., and Willie Young Sr. (Victoria) of Rembert; two sisters, Allen Johnson (Bernard) of Sumter and Elise Young of the home.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Young and Geneva Thompson; one sister-in-law, Betty Young; and one brother-in-law, Edmond Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. 261 N., Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, officiating eulogist. Burial will be in Rafting Creek Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Rembert.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Floral bearers will be friends and family.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his sister, Elise Young, 6765 Camden Hwy., Rembert.

MAGGIE S. MOSES

Maggie "Peggy" Shaw Moses, 59, wife of James Moses Jr. of 41 years, died May 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 14, 1944, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Addie Lee Smalls Shaw and the late James Shaw Sr. She was a 1963 graduate of Lincoln High School. To further her education, she completed computer and leadership training at Sumter Area Technical School. She retired from Gold Kist Inc. in December 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia L. Moses-Nedd (Minister Michael D. Nedd) of Woodbridge, Va., and Cassandra L. Moses-Wright (Lorenzo Wright) of Sumter; one sister, Willie Mae Terry (Dennis Sabb); and seven grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today from the Quinn Chapel AME Church, 2400 Queen Chapel Road, Sumter, with the Rev. E. Robert Thomas, officiating eulogist, assisted by Minister Michael D. Nedd, the Rev. Eartha McCloud-Joe and the Rev. Nathaniel Baker.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Floral bearers will be friends and family.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from her home, 30 James St., Sumter.

CLAUDE STALVEY

MAYESVILLE -- Claude Stalvey, 71, husband of Faye Lloyd Stalvey, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late Daniel S. Stalvey and the late Bell Sims Stalvey.

Mr. Stalvey was retired from Campbell Soup Company with more than 19 years of service.

Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons; Claude Leon Stalvey and Tony Stalvey, both of Mayesville; a daughter, Debra S. Jumper and her husband Tony of Mayesville; four sisters, Anzie Mims of Sumter, Burenia Amerson of Batesburg; Kathleen Davis and her husband P.R. of Darlington; and Molly Watford and her husband James of Lamar; five grandchildren, Jason Jumper of Augusta, Chad Jones and his wife Bonnie of Lugoff; Jennifer Stalvey and Amanda Jumper, both of Mayesville; and Cherie Strickland of Anderson; and a special god child, Bre Douglas.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and a daughter-in-law, Kimberly Stalvey.

Services will be held 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Stalvey and the Rev. Jimmy Lloyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 4160 Myrtle Beach Highway.

Memorials may be sent to New Hope Assembly Church, 4170 Myrtle Beach Highway, Mayesville, SC 29104.

RUDOLPH P. FLEMING

Rudolph Phillip "Rudy" Fleming, 61, husband of Judy Mooneyhan Fleming, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Inez Ward Fleming and the late William R. Fleming Sr.

He was a member of the North Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a professional truck driver for 15 years and currently a self-employed pilot car operator with A&J Pilot Service.

Survivors besides his mother and his wife include a daughter, Dormy Geddings and her husband, Champ, of Sumter; two grandchildren, Joshua and Daniel; and a brother, Roger Fleming of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William R. Fleming Jr.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and immediately following the service at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 2830 Ambrose Drive.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 311, Columbia, SC 29204, or to the Congregations of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
